Hållbarhet och tillväxt i medier: En diskursanalys av två svenska dagstidningar under 20162017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Media Environments: Icebergs/Screens/History2015Inngår i: Journal of Northern Studies, ISSN 1654-5915, Vol. 9, nr 1, s. 33-50Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Icebergs, at present, are living a second life on screens. While they are one of the natural world’s most photogenic objects, icebergs are also subject to modes of representation through parametric modeling applications. The purpose of this digital life on screens is largely confined to determining how, and under what conditions, icebergs can be made a source of potable water for the planet. Yet icebergs have a story to tell about the epistemological and economic production of northern natural resources. Distinct institutional actors, from oceanographers and military engineers to Saudi royalty and software design companies, have sought to control and come to know icebergs through specific practices of modeling. I argue that the representation of icebergs is a contingent practice that has often been bound up with processes of commodification. To come to know icebergs we have to come to know how these quintessentially polar phenomena have been represented and commodified, across the twentieth century and at a significant remove from the highest latitudes of the planet. The increasing pace of northern development, with natural resources at the vanguard of corporate and governmental incursions, signals the emergence of “media environments” that are extending the representation of (and control over) natural phenomena through a series of media technologies, from 3D modeling applications and collections of satellite data to virtual reality environments and predictive algorithms.

Imagining the ideal city, planning the gender-equal city in Umeå, Sweden2016Inngår i: Gender, Place and Culture: A Journal of Feminist Geography, ISSN 0966-369X, E-ISSN 1360-0524, Vol. 23, nr 12, s. 1750-1762Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Focusing on imaginaries of the ideal city is an important method to illustrate the power of ideas, imagination, representations and even visions, and how these dimensions influence the way in which cities are organized and lived. In this article, we argue that one current and important city imaginary in a Swedish context is the gender-equal city. In this imaginary, the gender-equal city becomes a symbol for the open, tolerant, bustling, safe city, a city aiming to attract the middle and creative classes. However, at the same time, the imaginary of the ideal, gender-equal city is highly ambiguous. This ambiguity will be discussed throughout the article. Based on present planning projects in the city of Umeå in Sweden, we will discuss how the imaginary of the gender-equal city is presented, filled with meaning and used in place marketing, with the overall ambition of discussing the possibilities and pitfalls of what we call the gender-equality planning strategy. The aim of the article is to study how the city of Umeå is acting to create a gender-equal city and what kind of imaginaries these practices build on. The material consists primarily of a case study focusing on projects that aim to create an equal city, and also includes analyses of policy documents and media reports. This study illustrates how imaginaries are produced through local projects and different imaginaries provide different spaces for politicizing gendered power relations.

What is hiding behind the covers? : A qualitative picture and text analysis of the magazine Hänt Bild’s first pages.2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Title: What is hiding behind the covers - A qualitative picture and textual analysis of the newspaper Hänt Bild

The news found on a magazine cover is for the audience to become interested to buy the magazine. When it was discovered that there is news that gives a misleading message to sell more, there is a research problem. The purpose of the essay is to study the message of the news on Hänt Bild’s covers and then be compared to the messages that the related articles provides.

Total of 28 news where analyzed in four issues of the magazine published the year 2013. The essay was based on a qualitative visual and textual analysis with the theoretical frameworks sensational journalism, framing, image context and semiotics. The analysis was divided into three different themes to distinguish the news which gave misleading, genuine or double messages. The results of this study indicate that there are news with a misleading message in each issue of the magazine. This news was mostly about divorces, pregnancies and infidelity. The analysis also indicated that images played a major role in what messages the news gave. It was also discovered that the news on the covers which contained only text and no images angled the message so that readers would believe the article was about something else, even though the text on the cover gave a genuine message to the related article. Although it was discovered to be misleading news on the covers, there was also genuine news to the related articles.

To summarize there where 14 news that gave a misleading message, 8 news gave a genuine message and 6 news gave a double message to the related articles. The result shows that the audience is misled by some news on the cover of a magazine with the aim of the editors to sell more.

Keywords: tabloids, frontpage, sensational journalism, framing, semiotics, Hänt Bild

Shafted: a case of cultural and structural violence in the power relations between a Sami community and a mining company in northern Sweden2015Inngår i: Ethnologia Scandinavica, ISSN 0348-9698, E-ISSN 0348-9698, Vol. 45, s. 73-88Artikkel i tidsskrift (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

In the summer of 2013 a conflict between a mining company and a group of protesters took place in Gállok (Kallak) in northern Sweden. The conflict brought a long-standing debate to the surface about the so-called Swedish mining boom and its impact on both natural environments and the traditional Sami livelihood, reindeer herding. This article explores the power relations and structural and cultural violence experienced by members of a sameby (a Sami reindeer herding community) in its relations with the Swedish government-owned mining company LKAB. The study centres around the events that took place before and during the creation of an opinion piece, published in a Swedish national tabloid, involving both parties. The analysis uses two of the sameby members’ narratives to describe their experiences in order to investigate the power relations, which are then analysed using peace researcher Johan Galtung’s theories on structural and cultural violence.

Indigenous research across continents: a comparison of ethically and culturally sound approaches to research in Australia and Sweden2015Inngår i: Finding the common ground: narratives, provocations and reflections from the 40 year celebration of batchelor institute / [ed] Henk Huijser, Robyn Ober, Sandy O’Sullivan, Eva McRae-Williams, Ruth Elvin, Batchelor NT: Batchelor Press , 2015, s. 119-126Kapittel i bok, del av antologi (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In the context of opposition to, or absence of, ethical engagement in Indigenous research, researchers aremorally obligated to make a stand that ensures their engagement strategy and implementation plan uses an approach based on positionality, participation, mutual respect, and partnership. Whilst this may involve new challenges for the researcher, such an initiative maximises the likelihood of an empowering and culturally safe process for vulnerable participants, including inexperienced researchers. As two early career researchers, we reflect on our experiences amidst some of the challenges within Indigenous research. These challenges include ethical, methodological and structural issues. The main aims of this chapter are to advocate for practical and philosophical reform of Indigenous research ethics particularly in the context of decolonisation; ultimately to maximise the benefits of research primarily for community research participants, service providers, and policy makers as opposed to primarily for the academy. The authors' experiential and theoretical knowledge enables a critical understanding of the philosophical underpinnings of a decolonising research approach and how this guides the development of an appropriate ethics protocol. We acknowledge that research impacts on Indigenous peoples' lives, often in a negative or unintended manner, and its governance varies dramatically according to individual as well as institutional values that are steeped in Western thought including colonialism. This paper draws on scholarly theoretical knowledge of cultural protocols and the governance of ethical processes from international and local sources, as well as our own experiences in cross-cultural communication to articulate what we call a Decolonising Standpoint. We regard this as a necessary addition to the implementation of an Indigenous Standpoint in the context of research, which has provided a highly credible philosophy and practice for Indigenous researchers. We aim to create an additional and quite distinct position that non-Indigenous researchers can add to their repertoire of skills and knowledge in the context of Indigenous research.

Semiótica do absurdo e do sem-sentido: uma perspectiva lotmaninana2019Inngår i: Bakhtiniana: Revista de Estudos do Discurso, ISSN 2176-4573, Vol. 14, nr 4, s. 157-169Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [pt]

    Abstract [en]

This article reviews the possibilities for utilizing the concept of fantasy in studies combining discourse theory and ethnology. It considers the Lacanian concept of fantasy that has been worked into socioeconomic and cultural analysis by Jason Glynos, David Howarth and Joan Wallach Scott. The author suggests that the concept of fantasy could make analytical contributions for answering questions of why subjects get caught up in, and are gripped by, norms and social rules that they might not agree with. It could also contribute with a theoriza tion of the critical practices of creating counternarratives and revealing contingencies.

Människor i norr: samisk forskning på nya vägar2008Collection/Antologi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [sv]

I Människor i Norr.

Perpetual adaption?: challanges for the Sami and reindeer husbandry in Sweden2015Inngår i: The new Arctic / [ed] Birgitta Evengård, Joan Nymand Larsen, Øyvind Paasche, Cham: Springer, 2015, s. 39-55Kapittel i bok, del av antologi (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Reindeer husbandry is of vital importance for the Sami living in Sweden, Norway, Finland and Russia. With a focus on Sweden we can conclude that through a colonial history the reindeer herding Sami have achieved legal rights that to some extent guarantee their existence. This is largely due to a successful political mobilization. On the other hand conflicts over land use with non-Sami settlers and the Swedish state have been a frequent element in the industry. The Sami must also combat a stereotypical understanding of reindeer herding that often has difficulties in understanding the constant modernization and technical development. Today the reindeer herders compete with industries such as mines, hydropower, windmill parks, forestry and tourism. An additional threat is the predators and state policies around them. Reindeer herding is of vital importance to all Sami, but the legal system prohibits the large majority to be involved, something that has had recent political complications in the Sami society.

    Abstract [en]

This paper starts with an actual reaserch report on MMA, to describe how the sport is situated and framed within the community as such being staged, artificial and yet authentic. Leading concept for this conference-contribution is masculinity, phenenomenology. By using Bruno Latour and Donna Harraway the author shows how bodies are connected in separate ways. One by the means of the material infliction the violence has on its body, and the other by how they control their MMA-bodies to resist pain.

    Abstract [en]

The Internet may provide the means for otherwise marginalized groups – such as young people with mental health problems – to make their voices heard in public, and online representations are therefore an important source for studying how emotions are conceptualized and communicated in these groups. In an on-going study of YouTube video montages on the subject of self-injury, we have found one emblematic and frequently occurring character: a girl sitting alone in a corner, on the floor, with drawn up knees and head bent down. Images of this character are widespread, not only on YouTube but also on blogs, discussion forums and websites. Together with her likewise sitting 'sisters' – the girl on the swing, the girl on the pier and on the railway track – she is taken to represent young people's unhappiness, pain and misery. Our chapter sets out to explore in greater detail how this character emerges as a signifier of gendered suffering in online contexts. We argue that it contributes to an aestheticization of suffering that often seems to emanate from the rejection of conventional ideals and hegemonic definitions of normality; the embracing of suffering might, thus, be used as a strategy for achieving social distinction. Also, we suggest in our chapter that the girl in the corner and similar representations may be seen as facilitating certain emotional identifications, especially as regards gender.

JAKT- OCH FÅNGSTKULTUR BLAND URFOLK: En jämförande studie om reciprocitetsynsätt bland samer och arktiska urfolk2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

The marriage boom: Spanish and Swedish women making sense of marriage during the marriage boom2015Inngår i: The History of the Family, ISSN 1081-602X, E-ISSN 1873-5398, Vol. 20, nr 1, s. 69-85Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This article analyzes the marriage boom that took place during the middle decades of the twentieth century. The increase in nuptiality is analyzed in Spain and Sweden from a qualitative perspective, and the authors describe how cultural, social, economic and institutional transformations were understood by women who were in their reproductive period during the marriage boom. In-depth interviews were conducted in both places with 51 women born between 1919 and 1951. The authors argue that it is important that the ways in which the factors previously identified as decisive of the marriage boom are studied for their motivating power, and the way they were or were not made important in people's understandings of their marital practices. The results show that despite the differences between the national contexts of Spain and Sweden, three interrelated themes recurred when the interviewed women framed their marital choices: (1) the normalization of marriage as a life event; (2) religion; (3) and education and work life. The results also suggest that the women highlighted norm systems within which their choices and decisions were made, rather than describing individual choices and decisions as stemming from individual preferences and wishes.

Från norr till söder och tillbaka?: En studie av politikers retorik om Norrland i tre rikstäckande tidningar2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to analyse how politicians produce, reproduce and challenge notions of Norrland through newspaper media. The study is based on 60 different articles collected from three national newspaper agencies, Dagens Nyheter, Aftonbladet and Svenska Dagbladet. Adopting the discourseanalytical method called the logics approach, this paper explores which discourses dominate the politicians rhetoric about Norrland as well as how the discourses challenge and constitute conceptions about the northern region. The study shows that politicians often discuss Norrland in terms of economics, environmental issues or demographical conditions. Even though the politicians tend to reproduce notions of Norrland as a remote and rural region, thus enhancing conceptions of the place as a dying and problematic area, the study reveals attempts to redefine Norrlands' problems as a national matter and concern. By appealing to different subjects the politicians try to create feelings of recognition within the public to prevent the place from becoming the rural area they already represent it as.

Fantomsmärtor eller växtvärk?: Om förutsättningarna att spela livemusik i postkulturhuvudstaden Umeå2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

When performing music in front of a live audience place factors in greatly, both for musicians and audiences. It is often something most people don’t think of, but it’s essential for having a memorable and safe experience, according to your expectations as either musician or audience member. But what happens when there is a disconnection between place and musician/audience?

In 2014 the city of Umeå was announced as that years European capital of culture. To get that title the municipality of Umeå had used the cities great number of active musicians to be rewarded with the title of capital of culture. However, these local musicians did not get to take part in this celebration and were unrepresented in the year long program. Also, in combination with the lack of representation, a couple of beloved  local venues used for live music where either moved away from central Umeå or closed down. This led to a period of musicians either having a hard time to play live shows, or playing liveshows on stages where they could perform their music as intended. The lack of an obvious scene for live music also led to difficulties of attracting audiences because of having shows in places around town where people never had experienced live music before.

    Abstract [en]

The swedish state have as of late seemingly distanced themselves from the cultural politics regarding painting- and sculpture artists. Since the implementation of “samverkansmodellen”, a plan to regionalise the culture politics and the distribution of economic resources to the different countys of Sweden, the state has increasingly been hesitant to make any decisions regarding the painting- and sculpture artists. While the interest in art and culture has increased in Sweden the last couple of years, the welfare and social safety of artists has been on a decline. At the same time Sweden’s art worlds revolves around the big city regions of Stockholm county, Västra Götaland and Skåne. In the shadow of these counties I have met with artists from the northern part of Sweden known as “Norrland”, specifically in the county of Västernorrland. Through interviews I study how they both relate to being a working artist in the cultural periphery, and how they relate to the politics and economics that comes with the occupation, and what benefits and negatives they see in the locality of the region of Västernorrland. Keywords: Art worlds, culture politics, centre-periphery, place, working environment.

Death in the souvenir shop: Mortal remains as cult and curiosities

Museums, heritage production and Christian relics all deal with and are built on death in various aspects. Transferring an everyday object into the museum sphere can be regarded as an intentional death, a rebirth to a new identity and a new context. Relics are the byproducts of death, given a new life as subject to religious veneration. When inscribed in yet another context of heritage, musealisation and tourism, they can once again be regarded as dead and resurrected to a new life and identity. When saintly bones journey from human life through death, sacredness, political power and tourism, to something for sale in the souvenir shop, is it layer upon layer of death – or an endless chain of resurrections and new lives?

    Abstract [en]

This article examines how the term 'holiness' can be applied to the discussion about cultural heritage, and raises the question whether cultural heritage might even have substituted institutionalized religion as an object of devotion in a secularized society. A comparison between the religious field and the heritage field is performed by studying two specific examples, the Trinity icon by Andrej Rublev and the medieval wall surrounding the city of Visby, Sweden. Different aspects of these examples are examined, such as Creating distance - creating intimacy; Pedagogical example - The real thing; Who is the subject, who's zoomin' who?; The bless and to petrify; Between preservation and use, form and function. The parallells between the religious field and the heritage field end up in a conclusion that 'holiness' needs to be re-introduced as a factor - not least in a time and society of increasing cultural diversity.

Religion in Museums: Euthanized Sacredness, in the Beholder’s Eye, or a Multi-Tool for Shifting Needs?: Three suggested models to discuss how museums affect sacredness2018Inngår i: Museology and the Sacred. Papers for discussion / [ed] François Mairesse, Paris: ICOFOM (International committee for museology) , 2018, s. 223-228Konferansepaper (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

What happens when religion in the shape of objects imbued with religious meaning is transformed into cultural heritage? What values are added, what are lost, and who is the performing agent? These questions concern what museums do to objects connected to religion, calling for a meditated use of terms such as holy, sacred, religious, and spiritual (all employed in recent research and policy documents by, for example, UNESCO, while in many cases as interchangeable). This paper suggests three models to understand the processes of heritagisation of religion and the factors and agents involved, starting from a historical background in European, in particular Italian, Early Modernity. A frequently used scholarly model depicts the museum as a killing of previous identities, and the objects as provided with entirely new identities, and lives, as museum objects. This view brings on dramatic effects for sacred objects, how they are handled and narrated in the museum, and possibly on how they are viewed by the visitors. The use or not of information signs before sacred objects in museums is an aspect on this matter. The second model is the hybrid identity, where a museum object can be said to possess two authentic identities simultaneously, depending on the views and beliefs of the beholder: authentic sacredness, or authentic art object and evidence of history. This view may fit well with the focus on the individual in our time. The third model presented is based on the two previous ones, and suggests a hybridity not only in identities or living/dead, but defined by the uses of the objects. Even musealized objects can, as in the cases of religious treasuries or of certain religious images in museums, shift identity between museum object, object of devotion (to be carried in processions or used in rituals), legitimization symbol (bishops’ ordinations etc), and, historically, as a monetary reserve to be sold if needed. The identity of the object shifts, also in practice of being looked at behind glass or being used and touched, depending on the use currently applied to it. A distinction between cultual use and cultural use is relevant for this model. I argue that these different approaches to sacred objects in museum pose different museological challenges and possibilities, and also ascribes different agencies to museum staff as well as to the visitors.

    Abstract [en]

Destructive, infertile, intellectually inferior, and the home of witches and werewolves. A northern visitor to southern Europe in the early modern period travelled — willingly or not — into a world imbued with forceful associations related to the North that were well estab- lished, historically rooted, and alive in the minds of the people in the South. These concepts, mythological images, and archetypes were well known also by the northerners themselves, and were, contrary to what one might expect, not merely a yoke of negative expectations but also in some cases cleverly used to enhance certain aspects of a constructed image or a desired reputation. This article wishes to bring forth some of these images, and give examples of how they were used and affected in particular the religious relations between North and South in the post-Reformation period.

Välfärdsfantasier: personalisering av offentlig service i Storbritannien2015Inngår i: Kulturella perspektiv - Svensk etnologisk tidskrift, ISSN 1102-7908, nr 2, s. 24-33Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The article shows how personalisation in the UK has become part of a particular public service reform trajectory, in which it is argued that the threat of an ageing population makes it imperative to transform public services if the welfare state is not to collapse the welfare state. Personalisation is also the means by which it is thought that public service users can be empowered to make individual choices. The article describes the concrete emergence of a personalisation model and focuses then on the fantasmatic dimension of the ideology of personalisation in order to account for its grip to date. This requires more than a simply deconstructive critique of policy ideas but an examination of the co-construction of and libidinal investment in social projects.

    Abstract [en]

This chapter explores what happens when well-educated, highly skilled professionals leave their country of origin to work abroad to make use of their skills and competences in another organizational framework and cultural context. Do they experience any limits regarding the acknowledgement of their seemingly transnational competences and diplomas? What kind of obstacles do they meet and what are their strategies for reestablishing professionalism and status in a new setting? We present the results from our ethnographic study “Polish Doctors in Swedish Medical Care”  as a point of departure for a Bourdieu-inspired discussion on negotiations regarding symbolic capital in another national medical field (cf. Bourdieu 1984, 1988) and the conditions and limitations of transnational mobility of symbolic capital.
