    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to investigate the communication challenges of Hälsa 2020. To achieve this purpose, the following theories have been used: media convergence, mediatization, social communication, excellence model and communication strategies. The material of this study consists of four interviews with both public health workers and communication professionals.

The results and analysis of the study showed that mediatization is influencing the communication work of Hälsa 2020 in terms of language and formats. Another thing that influenced the communication is the obligation to communicate to everybody, where communicating to vulnerable groups is seen as particularly challenging. The results of the study also showed that Hälsa 2020 is working with production of facts to frame themselves as experts. This indicates how Hälsa 2020 is navigating in a new media landscape where a consumer can be a producer and vice versa. Therefore, the previous information monopoly of medical expertise can be said to be challenged by other sources of information in this new media landscape.

Gamification - The process of designing our activities into games2016Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The trend of adjusting our activities, making them more attractive and less like chores is apparent just by looking at the applications and systems we use for our everyday lives. In this study we investigate this phenomenon, in both training and dating applications, from a design perspective using the frameworks of gamification and Fogg´s behavior model. Using these tools in complement with qualitative interviews we answer questions regarding how one can design gamification to achieve behavior change. The chosen applications, namely Tinder, Badoo, RunKeeper and Nike+ were all identified as gamification applications and in regard to how they were designed, the training applications primarily showed interest in raising the motivation of users, while the dating applications rather focused on easing the simplicity of performing the behavior.

Bridging the generational gap: Designing internet services for technologically-naïve older people using familiar interfaces2018Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Despite advances made in modern electronic devices, their use by older people is significantly lower than for younger people. They experience difficulties using devices due to a combination of physical, cognitive and ‘generational’ differences. Many studies try to adapt devices to make them more usable, but they do not consider how older people feel in terms of attitudes towards technology or their existing habits. Seven participants were interviewed about their current use of technology, as well as their attitudes to modern technology, and a personal inventory was created for each participant. The interviews generated themes relating to how participants feel that technology is not made for them, barriers to their use, and generational differences as well as arguments against modern technology use and perceived negative aspects of technology. Some design considerations were created and illustrated using features from the most commonly used devices that suited the interviewees’ attitudes, behaviours and opinions.

A novel approach to citation normalization: a similarity-based method for creating reference sets2015Ingår i: Journal of the Association for Information Science and Technology, ISSN 2330-1635, E-ISSN 2330-1643, Vol. 66, nr 3, s. 489-500Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

A similarity-oriented approach for deriving reference values used in citation normalization is explored and contrasted with the dominant approach of utilizing database-defined journal sets as a basis for deriving such values. In the similarity-oriented approach, an assessed article's raw citation count is compared with a reference value that is derived from a reference set, which is constructed in such a way that articles in this set are estimated to address a subject matter similar to that of the assessed article. This estimation is based on second-order similarity and utilizes a combination of 2 feature sets: bibliographic references and technical terminology. The contribution of an article in a given reference set to the reference value is dependent on its degree of similarity to the assessed article. It is shown that reference values calculated by the similarity-oriented approach are considerably better at predicting the assessed articles' citation count compared to the reference values given by the journal-set approach, thus significantly reducing the variability in the observed citation distribution that stems from the variability in the articles' addressed subject matter.

Science mapping and research evaluation: a novel methodology for creating normalized citation indicators and estimating their stability2014Doktorsavhandling, sammanläggning (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to contribute to the methodology at the intersection of relational and evaluative bibliometrics. Experimental investigations are presented that address the question of how we can most successfully produce estimates of the subject similarity between documents. The results from these investigations are then explored in the context of citation-based research evaluations in an effort to enhance existing citation normalization methods that are used to enable comparisons of subject-disparate documents with respect to their relative impact or perceived utility. This thesis also suggests and explores an approach for revealing the uncertainty and stability (or lack thereof) coupled with different kinds of citation indicators. This suggestion is motivated by the specific nature of the bibliographic data and the data collection process utilized in citation-based evaluation studies.

The results of these investigations suggest that similarity-detection methods that take a global view of the problem of identifying similar documents are more successful in solving the problem than conventional methods that are more local in scope. These results are important for all applications that require subject similarity estimates between documents. Here these insights are specifically adopted in an effort to create a novel citation normalization approach that – compared to current best practice – is more in tune with the idea of controlling for subject matter when thematically different documents are assessed with respect to impact or perceived utility. The normalization approach is flexible with respect to the size of the normalization baseline and enables a fuzzy partition of the scientific literature. It is shown that this approach is more successful than currently applied normalization approaches in reducing the variability in the observed citation distribution that stems from the variability in the articles’ addressed subject matter. In addition, the suggested approach can enhance the interpretability of normalized citation counts. Finally, the proposed method for assessing the stability of citation indicators stresses that small alterations that could be artifacts from the data collection and preparation steps can have a significant influence on the picture that is painted by the citationindicator. Therefore, providing stability intervals around derived indicators prevents unfounded conclusions that otherwise could have unwanted policy implications.

Together, the new normalization approach and the method for assessing the stability of citation indicators have the potential to enable fairer bibliometric evaluative exercises and more cautious interpretations of citation indicators.

    Comparison of publication-level approaches to ex-post citation normalization2019Ingår i: Scientometrics, ISSN 0138-9130, E-ISSN 1588-2861, Vol. 120, nr 1, s. 283-300Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper, we compare two sophisticated publication-level approaches to ex-post citation normalization: an item-oriented approach and an approach falling under the general algorithmically constructed classification system approach. Using articles published in core journals in Web of Science (SCIE, SSCI & A&HCI) during 2009 (n=955,639), we first examine, using the measure Proportion explained variation (PEV), to what extent the publication-level approaches can explain and correct for variation in the citation distribution that stems from subject matter heterogeneity. We then, for the subset of articles from life science and biomedicine (n=456,045), gauge the fairness of the normalization approaches with respect to their ability to identify highly cited articles when subject area is factored out. This is done by utilizing information from publication-level MeSH classifications to create high quality subject matter baselines and by using the measure Deviations from expectations (DE). The results show that the item-oriented approach had the best performance regarding PEV. For DE, only the most fine-grained clustering solution could compete with the item-oriented approach. However, the item-oriented approach performed better when cited references were heavily weighted in the similarity calculations.

The effects and their stability of field normalization baseline on relative performance with respect to citation impact: a case study of 20 natural science departments2011Ingår i: Journal of Informetrics, ISSN 1751-1577, E-ISSN 1875-5879, Vol. 5, nr 1, s. 101-113Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper we study the effects of field normalization baseline on relative performance of 20 natural science departments in terms of citation impact. Impact is studied under three baselines: journal, ISI/Thomson Reuters subject category, and Essential Science Indicators field. For the measurement of citation impact, the indicators item-oriented mean normalized citation rate and Top-5% are employed. The results, which we analyze with respect to stability, show that the choice of normalization baseline matters. We observe that normalization against publishing journal is particular. The rankings of the departments obtained when journal is used as baseline, irrespective of indicator, differ considerably from the rankings obtained when ISI/Thomson Reuters subject category or Essential Science Indicators field is used. Since no substantial differences are observed when the baselines Essential Science Indicators field and ISI/Thomson Reuters subject category are contrasted, one might suggest that people without access to subject category data can perform reasonable normalized citation impact studies by combining normalization against journal with normalization against Essential Science Indicators field.

    Abstract [en]

Alternative Media is a new phenomenon when it comes to bringing us the news. These Alternative News sites has often being accused for being bias and favour right-wing parties. The purpose of this thesis has been to see how the Alternative News sites Samhällsnytt and Fria tider have been reporting news about the Swedish right wing party, Sverigedemokraterna (SD) before the Swedish election 2018. And if their articles have similarities to propaganda. With help of a critical discource analysis, it has been possible to see traces of propaganda in the material. The majority of the articles reproduce a discourse where SD is seen as the alternative to a Swedish society that does not work as it should. SD are also presented as a victim in the society when they are involved in news that otherwise could give them a negative image.

    Abstract [sv]

The Beauty of the beast: the matter of meaning in digitalization2010Ingår i: AI & Society: The Journal of Human-Centred Systems and Machine Intelligence, ISSN 0951-5666, E-ISSN 1435-5655, Vol. 25, nr 1, s. 27-33Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Digitalization reveals the world in new varieties and forms. This power to unveil not only transforms human outreach and actions, but also changes our conceptions; about whom we are, about our uses and about human horizons for sense-making. In this paper, I explore experience design and the aesthetic turn in contemporary research in human–computer interaction and interaction design. This rather recent interest in aesthetic experience is in my view a move away from a view of digitalization as instances of objects aligned in networks, with certain features, qualities and properties, towards an understanding of digitalization as a relation to the world, to itself, and to what it means to be human (e.g. Technology and the character of contemporary life. A philosophical inquiry. The University of Chicago Press, Chicago, 1984, Holding on to reality. The nature of information at the turn of the millennium. The University of Chicago Press, Chicago, 1999; Questioning technology. Routledge, New York, 1999; The question concerning technology and other essays. Harper and Row, New York, 1977; Technology and the lifeworld, from garden to earth. Indiana University Press, Bloomington, 1990). As such my attempt in this text is to outline a conceptual account concerning what it might mean to designate digitalization as experienced rather than as what we traditionally think of it—as a cause of what we perceive. The paper is based on some previous work suggesting that a focus on the beauty of digitalization (i.e. the beast) entails the possibility to investigate ambiguous meanings of digitalization, meanings that are intrinsic to digitalization but have so far received little or no attention. My suggestion is that there are aesthetic and/or sublime dimensions inherent in digitalization that involves the realization of meaning that are becoming increasingly important in both use and design of digital materials. Hence, the particular focus on aesthetics as implied by the title of this text refers to a pervasive quality harbouring meaning that through a phenomenological lens could be regarded as the material basis of digitalization. The paper concludes that it is crucial to conduct more thorough studies of the relationship between aesthetics and digitalization if we are truly interested in exploring the potential of digitalization in our lives.

    Ethics for Responsible Technologies2019Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In this position paper, a tentative response to questions concerning the role of philosophy in conjunction with recent advancement within the field of HCI (Human Computer Interaction) will be discussed. At the core of our discussion are new demands for responsible research where philosophically informed HCI research can play a fundamental part. Our argument is that philosophically informed HCI research can serve as a foundation for assessing and deliberating relationships between digital designs and quality of life. In our view, such assessments have much to gain by perspectives and critiques already elaborated by HCI scholars. We briefly outline how, in our experience, the basis of Critical Theory and Feminism provides a bracketing foundation for educating and cultivating HCI research that anticipates and assesses potential implications and societal expectations with regard to digital designs.

    Abstract [sv]

Är all information viktig? Är all information nyttig? Vem kontrollerar informationen?

    Abstract [en]

The Android OS is ever growing on the global market, reaching more and more people. This have led to the distribution of millions of applications, that the Android user can interact with. However, the usage of Android apps is not risk free and there are various methods deployed by Google Play to protect the privacy of the Android owner. One of these protective measures are permissions. However, as permissions are controlled by the user, there is a need of comprehending the user behaviour and attitude to the permissions. Lack of understanding the importance, and of the permission itself, could present a real danger of privacy trespassing to the user. In this paper we evaluate the rate of attitude and behaviour by questionnaire and empirical quality-driven interviews. We compare and scrutinize our data with older studies. We identify factors contributing the failure to comply with permission warnings. Also, we find that there are connections between factors such as gender and age, for how the user behaviour and attitude conclude with permissions. In the end we present an exhaustive analysis and discussion to our results, ending with a conclusion that there are differences to be found from older studies and that there are connections in gender and age with how the user acts by permissions.

Berättande i olika medier2008Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [sv]

I boken Berättande i olika medier utforskas därför denna relation.

Technology as movement: on hybrid organizational types and the mutual constitution of movement identity and technological infrastructure in digital activism2016Ingår i: Convergence. The International Journal of Research into New Media Technologies, ISSN 1354-8565, E-ISSN 1748-7382, Vol. 22, nr 5, s. 524-542Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

New communication technologies bring about new ways for political groups and movements to mobilize and organize. A consequence of this might be that established interpretations of and attitudes towards social movements may have to be revisited, for example, when it comes to their internal constitution and their modes of working. This interview case study looks at the digital activist cluster Telecomix and its interventions during the Arab Spring. The study addresses how the network used technological and communicational infrastructures and platforms and how it was organizationally affected by these. By using concepts such as ‘one media bias’, ‘media ecology’, ‘hybridity’ and ‘cognitive praxis’, the article aims to conceptualize how the identity of a movement and its technological infrastructure mutually constitute each other.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Recent development in technology has dramatically increased our capacity to collect, distribute and analyze huge amounts of data. This has led to an increasing interest in thearea called Internet of Things (IoT), representing the idea of using this data to producesmart products and services. The complexity of IoT requires organizations to collaborate innovel ways, combining resources and knowledge to cocreate value in an IoT-ecosystem.Previous research on cocreation and business ecosystems shows that these collaborationsare complex and needs to be managed in order to be successful. In this study we seek tofurther develop existing theory on cocreation of value in the context of IoT. It focuses onhow the composition of actors affects the cocreation process in an IoT-ecosystem. We dothis by conducting a qualitative case study examining the various views and experiencesfrom actors in an on-going IoT project. Our results show that the process is affected by theinvolved actors based on various factors. These were individual perspectives on goals, visions and value, as well as conditions related to previous relationships and coordinationneeds. We conclude that cocreation of value in the context of IoT confirms much of theprevious theory regarding this area. However, this context is also unique in some ways, mainly because of the dictating complexity surrounding it. Our study highlights the need toproperly address and handle the various perspectives on the concept IoT, and also theperception of value as mainly non-monetary due to the unexplored nature of IoT.

    Abstract [en]

The Swedish Work Environment Authority published a report in 2015 on digital work environment, where they established a definition of digital work environment. To examine a digital work environment I chose a profession not directly related to knowledge work, but a profession working with people with functional disability living in group-homes, because a digitalization of work is to occur in almost all professions today. To examine the digital work environment I conducted a qualitative study including four semi-structured interviews with those who work in group-homes. The study was limited to the journal system Procapita and how the work with documenting in the digital system affected the digital work environment, though the workers were talking about other technical artefacts that could also relate to digital work environment. The interviews showed some cognitive, psychosocial and physical work environment problems, changes in demands from the organization due to digitalization of work and also benefits from digitalization of the journal system, but noconclusive facts can be drawn due to lack of comprehensive data. Attention to digital work environment is crucial because work environment is changing due to digitalization. Some suggestions to further research is presented.

Inter-team knowledge sharing: A case study on co-located teams’ drivers and barriers for KS2018Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Agile software development is a high-technology environment with several challenges. One of these is how to manage knowledge. Knowledge sharing is an important part of software development and is supported in agile practices, but mainly within teams, and not between teams. There is much research done about knowledge sharing within teams and a current trend is to research knowledge sharing in globally distributed teams. However, there’s little research about knowledge sharing between co-located teams, and what barriers and drivers exist. We conducted a case study within an IT-company with four co-located development teams to answer the research question: What are the drivers and barriers for knowledge sharing between co-located agile software development teams and how do they relate to different contexts.  Ten semi-structured interviews and one focus group was conducted and analyzed by using thematic analysis. This analysis constructed 6 themes, where 15 drivers and 21 barriers were identified. We contribute to the research field by presenting these barriers and drivers and show which barriers and drivers that exist in several contexts. We also relate our findings to other research. By our findings we also contribute to practitioners to understand when forming inter-team strategies for KS there is not only one way to success, but strategies need to be formed in several levels of organization.

    Abstract [en]

For many in the field of HCI, location and space are synonymous; yet, as we move from the mobile era to the ubiquitous era, computing becomes entangled with notions of space. This workshop critically examines the role of space in human-computer interfaces. The objective is to bring together diverse perspectives of space, drawing from architecture, philosophy, art, geography, design, dance, spatial-cognition, mathematics, computing, and still other domains, towards foregrounding space in theoretical discussions and explorations within the CHI community. Expected outcomes are the reporting of fresh insights into the impact and role of space in the interaction process.

"Hur kan ni använda denna sortens kvinnoförtryck i er reklam!!": En kvalitativ undersökning av responsen H&M och Åhléns fått på Facebook i och med sina kampanjer med slöjbärande kvinnor.2016Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This paper, ”How can you use such kind of oppression against women in your advertising!!!”- A qualitative study of the response H&M and Åhléns recieved due to their campaigns with veild women” is about how the veil and the veild woman are mentioned in the respons of the campaigns and which values that can provide the veiled woman in the society. To find this out, I have used a critical text analysis where I have analyzed the vocabulary and sentence structure. The theories underlying this study are post-colonial feminism, Stuart Halls representation and the New media landscape. All of these theories has been used to analyse the material. The results showed that the veil was both mentioned as a symbol of oppression and freedom and the veild woman was someone who, for some people, both fought for justice and a free society and by some, someone who is deeply oppressed. The conclusions that can be drawn from the results is that the veil, still is something that is seen as an oppression of women, and doesn’t belong in Sweden. But it is also possible to interpret it in such a way that the veil is something that has come to be accepted in society, and for many, gained a new and different meaning from before. The main conclusion is that the veil still is something that is highly debated and that the veiled woman is someone that the western countries have different views on.

    Abstract [en]

In their article “A farewell to the MNCS and like size-independent indicators” Abramo and D’Angelo argue that size-independent indicators are not suitable for assessing research performance; due to productivity differences among researchers and universities the use of size-independent indicators can distort rankings. Since I previously made a similar argument, I partly agree with the authors. However, I do not believe that assessing performance in terms of efficiency is the only important task for evaluative scientometrics. An equally important task is to assess the value of scientific contributions, and evaluating research organizations’ contribution to science is not the same task as evaluating the performance of their scientists.

    Abstract [en]

    Abstract [en]

Based on previous studies it has been found that women have a smaller chance than men of attaining professorships. It has also been found that gender differences in career development have been observed in many different countries. This study aims to contribute to these discussions by analyzing the extent to which gender differences in career development can be explained by early career opportunities, specifically the prestigious postdoctoral fellowship which is particular to the Swedish university system. This study concluded that women and men have the same probability to achieve a postdoctoral fellowship and that among men and women who have achieved this we observed that they had equal chances of becoming professors. However, it was also shown that women are substantially worse off than men for the study group of those who have not achieved a postdoctoral fellowship. This indicates that a meritocratic system does not seem do discriminate against women whereas as vacancy system seems to do so.

    Abstract [en]

Digitalization has proven to be a successful way for organizations to develop and improve both infrastructure and effectivity. In 2019 a national IT-policy for the Swedish education system was presented with the goal of leveraging digital technology to improve both the quality of education and organizational effectivity. The Swedish education system has a history of trying and failing to adopt IT-solutions effectively, efforts and results differ between schools and regions. The language used to define this new policy does not show many signs of development in reference to previous attempts. This thesis studies the effects of language and discourse on the ongoing digitalization efforts in Swedish schools. By adapting a framework for critical discourse analysis, the language used both in the national policy documents and by employees within the education system was analyzed. This study makes the following contributions: the way the Swedish education system understands technology complicates any digitalization efforts; secondly, the discourse regarding digitalization directly affects organizational learning and the development of the national policy itself; lastly, a change in discourse is needed for the Swedish education system to be able to learn from the past and work towards the future.

    Abstract [en]

Today’s fashion trends come and go with lightning speed creating a system that embodies unsustainability and consumerism, at the same time an increasing environmental consciousness is putting pressures on companies to operate in a more sustainable way, without losing profits. This study examines how fast fashion giant H&M communicates about corporate social responsibility (CSR) – specifically in their press releases, and how they portrait themselves as a sustainable company. A qualitative rhetorical analysis was conducted on H&M:s press releases between 2016 – 2018, applying Weber’s theory of legitimacy as well as Putnam’s theory of social capital. The results show that H&M frequently reinforces their own legitimacy and ethos in sustainability issues by “borrowing” other organizations credibility through cooperation with environment-focused NGO:s. As well as distancing themselves from their suppliers when problems arise in the supply chain, denying any responsibility.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to see how men, women and children are made in the Ikea 2014 catalog, this from a gender perspective. It will also examine if gender stereotypes are seen and how equal the people in the images is produced.

This essay is studied on the basis of gender theory and theories about stereotypes and how men, women and children are prepared in advertising and commercials. The method that was used during the analysis process was a qualitative semiotic method. The analysis tool that was used from the semiotic method was denotation, connotation and metonymy.

The result of the study shows that the major part of the pictures that was analyzed was gender stereotypical and that a few of the pictures showed some kind of equality between men and women, both between grow ups and children. One of the conclusions that were made is that Ikea, in some, pictures show that equality is something that they think about and that they care about the Swedish opinions when it comes to equality between human beings, as they, Ikea, are a Swedish based company.

    Abstract [en]

In this thesis we focus on the issue of crowdfunding and especially how a project relates to and embraces its community. While a lot of related research focus on what makes people give, our research instead delve into whether a creator looks upon the sponsors as something more than just a financial resource. To manage this task we used a triangular perspective consisting of a case study, a questionnaire and a netnographic study. The goal was to gain the perspectives of creators, crowdfunding platforms and sponsors on how the communication between the community and the project works and can be improved.

The three crowdfunding platforms we reviewed (Kickstarter, IndieGoGo, Rockethub) all had fairly similar models on how to attract sponsors and make them involved in the project, while the questionnaire and netnographic study demonstrated how a community could contribute in different ways. Based on our results we draw the conclusion that a project can be successful without embracing the creative qualities of its sponsors but doing so also is a waste of a great asset to both current and future projects.

    Abstract [en]

Gender is a constantly debated subject, especially within the world of sports. The representation of athletes in the media is dominated by the males. It is often that the athletes are portrayed on the basis of their sex and gender. With the extreme skiing being a new and modern sport, should it not be autonomous from gender? This study aims to examine whether and if so how the cover design differ between female and male extreme skiing athletes and how it affects the professional skiers. A semiotic analysis was used on the covers of the Swedish skier’s magazine Åka Skidor and interviews were held with some of Sweden’s professional extreme skiers using a hermeneutic approach. The theoretical framework used for this study was poststructuralism, poststructuralist feminism and gender theory.

The semiotic analysis showed that there is in fact a difference in both representation and how the skiers are portrayed on the covers of Åka Skidor. The interviews that were held resulted in three themes to answer the aim of this study. They were; the climate of extreme skiing, extreme skiing in media and the future of extreme skiing. The skiers had acknowledged that there is a difference between females and males when it comes to media representation and how they are portrayed. Although the explanation for this differs between the skiers they all mentioned the power of sponsors and sponsorship. However; the issue with athletes being portrayed and represented different based on their gender is not important enough to debate within the world of extreme skiing today. Therefore, it can be concluded that extreme skiing will probably not be autonomous from gender in the near future.

Walk with me: An iterative design process involving senior citizens in the making of a persuasive eHealth system2019Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Digitization of data offers more opportunities for future health and medicine care due to the availability of information technology in our everyday lives. Several studies have provided us with insights in designing persuasive eHealth services, but only a few studies have investigated the design of a persuasive eHealth application by using presently available smartphones and while including the target group. By pursuing an iterative design process, three smartphone application prototypes were created and tested with senior citizens by using cognitive walkthroughs, use case scenarios and semi-structured interviews. The results indicated that the target group involvement had positive influences on the design of the prototypes, with user insights uncovering setbacks and opportunities in the design. Thus, the study presents a set of primary characteristics for designing a persuasive eHealth application to be usable with smartphones and how the iterative design process with the involvement of senior citizens shaped the design.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this article is to address some challenges facing media intelligence in general, and competitive intelligence in particular within an altered information landscape. To understand this new situation, the notion of social and multimodal media intelligence are introduced. With cases taken primarily from the Swedish media intelligence sector, we argue that data driven media intelligence today needs to pay increasing attention to new forms of (A.) crowd-oriented and (B.) multimedia-saturated information. As a subcategory of media intelligence, competitive intelligence refers to the gathering of publicly available information about an organisation or a company’s competitors—using it to gain business advantages. Traditionally such intelligence has implied a set of techniques and tools that transforms numerical or textual data into useful information for business analysis. Today, however, we argue that such techniques need to consider media alterations in both a social and multimodal direction. Our analysis hence offers a conceptual understanding of a rapidly evolving field, were methods used within media intelligence need to change as well. By presenting some findings from the so called CIBAS-project, we describe how Swedish organisations and companies rely on social networking structures and individual decision making as a means to increase rapid response and agile creativity. If competitive intelligence was traditionally based on insights gleaned from statistical methods, contemporary media analytics are currently faced with audiovisual data streams (sound, video, image)—often with a slant of sociality. Yet, machine learning of other media modalities than text poses a number of technical hurdles. In this article we use fashion analytics as a final case in point, taken from a commercial sector where visual big data is presently in vogue.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to examine the depiction of mental illness with elite athletes. Mental illness has long been a sensitive object in the public's eye, but in recent years that has started to shift and the subject has destigmatized. More and more people are open and talk about their inner problems. But in one group in society the development has not been up to pace, and that is elite athletes. The study has also looked at the difference between tabloid and daily press. The theoretical framework was constructed by using the agenda setting theory, the framing theory, theories of media logic and the thoughts of news evaluation. The method used in the study was critical discourse analysis, and used in the way through out by Norman Fairclough and his three dimensional modell. A total of 38 articles from the newspapers Dagens Nyheter, Svenska dagbladet, Aftonbladet and Expressen was analyzed.

The analysis found that the papers tend to portray mental illness as a negative major problem of today's society. A majority of the articles analyzed tended put the athlete aspect of the person in limelight, rather than letting the athlete just be a suffering person. They way the papers achieved to sustain the image of being a unbeatable hero by reminding the audience about the athletic achievements won, when the athlete was presented in the article.

    Abstract [sv]

Game usability heuristics (PLAY) for evaluating and designing better games: the next iteration2009Ingår i: Online Communities and Social Computing, Vol. 1, nr 1, s. 557-566Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Game developers have begun applying formal human-computer interaction (HCI) principles in design. Desurvire et al [2] adapted a set of Heuristics for productivity software to games. The resulting set, presented at CHI 2004, was Heuristics to Evaluate Playability (HEP). Generalization of these heuristics is required to make them applicable to a multiple of game genres and game deliveries. This follow-up study focused on the refined list, Heuristics of Playability (PLAY), that can be applied earlier in game development as well as aiding developers between formal usability/playability research during the development cycle. Heuristics were formed based on their efficacious scores on the popular game review website, metacritic.com. Fiftyfour gamers rated High and Low ranked games on 116 potential heuristics. Implications for how these Heuristics will help developers improve game quality are discussed. PLAY has been found useful in design evaluation and elfreport survey format.

Driven by a critique of Ishii et al’s recent vision of Radical Atoms we call for a debate on the different conceptual paradigms underlying the TEI community and its activities. TEI was initiated to share and connect different perspectives, but we feel conceptual debate is lacking. To fuel this debate, we start with comparing two paradigms by examining the Radical Atoms proposal and balance it from our design-led perspective. Our aim with this paper is to revive the richness of TEI’s multidisciplinary approach.

The Impact of Cloud Computing on Organizations in Regard to Cost and Security2012Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Throughout the recent years cloud computing has gained large popularity in the information technology domain. Despite its popularity, there are many organizations that are lacking broader understanding of implementing and utilizing cloud computing for business and operating purpose due to the existing vagueness regarding its cost and security effect associated. It is argued that the main attractiveness of cloud computing for organizations is its cost effectiveness, whilst the major concern relates to the risks for security. Accordingly, more effort has been made in exploring these issues of cloud computing impact. However, little effort has been focused at critically examining the cost risks and security benefits which cloud computing bring to organizations. By using a qualitative method this research examines in detail the essential benefits and risks of cloud computing utilization for organizations in terms of cost and security. Unlike prior studies, it also explores the cost risks and security benefits and shows that they should be taken into consideration by organizations. The findings are based on empirical data collected via interviews with IT professionals. The main cost risk identified is the lack of accurate and sophisticated cost models on the current cloud market. Among the identified security benefits are increased data safety, faster data recovery and transfer, centralization, and improved security software mechanisms and maintenance. Moreover, this research shows several major implications that organizations should keep in mind while utilizing cloud computing and provides some suggestions on how to avoid the cost and security risks identified. At present, reduction of the operational and administrative costs is seen by organizations as the most essential cost benefit. The results show that cloud computing is better for small- and medium-sized organizations and that the hybrid cloud is the most appropriate model for them. Furthermore, the cost and security risks of cloud computing cannot be avoided without resolution of the problem with the lack of accurate cost models, international regulatory frameworks and interoperable security standards on supranational levels.

    Abstract [en]

Mass casualty incidents (MCI) in tunnels can result in devastating consequences. Despite this, there is a knowledge gap in the perspectives and experiences of strategic stakeholders in relation to the emergency medical response to MCI in tunnels. This study aims to explore and describe this issue. The study includes 11 interview participants from the emergency services organisations and governmental and municipal organisations in Sweden. The results indicate that the medical perspective is inadequately represented at a strategic level due, among other, to limited input from emergency medical representatives during planning stages and a lack of social networks. The results implicate a need to create and improve networks among the stakeholders from the involved organisations. Emergency medical personnel should not only be acknowledged for their expertise but should also be included to a greater extent in the planning stages and exercises. Medical and rescue personnel need time to jointly discuss how they, in the best way, can save lives in tunnel MCIs.

    Abstract [en]

Women are underrepresented in the society, and especially in the news. It is only

during the last years that things started changing. It was not until people started

to acknowledge this and realizing it is a big problem that the change started to

take place. By understanding the impact of media convergence on the news

production, we can also see the challenges and advantages that comes with it. To

understand how these two are associated, a case study on SVT Nyheter

Västerbotten has been done. Through interviews, observations, literature studies

and quantitative data a result is presented. It shows that SVT Nyheter

Västerbotten have a model that lead them to a successful development towards

gender equality in the news. They are not the only ones that tried it, but almost the

only ones that kept on with it.

    Abstract [en]

Our modern society is based on a culture of consumption, where individuals are in an on- going search for self-realization through consumption. But in a society with buzz a of commercials and information, a society where media users are getting more critical towards commercialized messages it’s harder for companies to be heard. To be heard, companies need to create messages that their customers choose to listen to. Content marketing is a marketing strategy that aims to do just that.

The purpose with this study is to get a deeper understanding of content marketing as a phenomenon within a consumption society by studying IKEAs series Vad gafflar ni om?. The study has a starting point in Bauman’s theories about consumption life, Giddens theories about the reflexive self, Jenkins theories about convergence culture and Faircloughs critical discourse analysis.

The critical discourse analysis was made through Faircloughs three-dimensional conception of discourse, which is a model consisting a linguistic analysis of the text, the discourse practise and the social practice. To get a deeper insight in the reception of the text, qualitative interviews with text consumers where also made. The result of the analysis showed that different types of identities and norms where presented by IKEA in the series, which all could be achieved through consumption. The text consumer is most likely influenced by the ideology consumerism, which can be why they agree with how IKEA present different identities. IKEA presents a narrow image of the typical swede, where that are presumed to be middle class and own their own house. A distinct promotion discourse could not be identified, although a consumption discourse was identified throughout the series. The text consumers felt that the content was mostly entertaining and educating, which could be the result of the non-exiting promotional discourse but also the use of an entertaining-genre. The text consumers were also positively disposed by the content that can be, in comparison to Grusells study, because they choose to see it by themselves.

The local and the digital in environmental communication2020Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This volume interrogates the intertwining of the local and the digital in environmental communication. It starts by introducing a wave metaphor to tease out major shifts in the field, and situates the intersections of local places and digital networks in the beginning of a third wave. Investigations that feature the centrality of place and digital communication platforms show how we today, as researchers and practitioners, communicate the environment. Contributions identify the need for critical approaches that engage with the wider consequences of this changing media landscape, unpacking local and global tensions in environmental communication research. This empirical case study collection from different parts of the world shows that environmental activists and citizens creatively use digital technologies for campaign purposes. It identifies new environmental communication challenges and opportunities, as well as practices, of environmental activists, NGOs, citizens and local communities, in the fight for social and environmental justice.
