"[F]rom dark to dark": Deconstruction and Abjection in Cormac McCarthy's The Road2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This essay presents a reading of Cormac McCarthy’s The Road from a dual theoretical outlook. Jacques Derrida’s deconstruction and Julia Kristeva’s theory of abjection both employ the Platonic concept of khôra/chora as a ‘site’ that lies beyond language. Based on these theories, the essay explores how the post-apocalyptic narrative of The Road is aimed at the limits of language. The first section of the essay is focused on deconstruction, which is enacted by way of thematic criticism. The narrative is interpreted in the light of a series of central deconstructive concepts. The post-apocalyptic world filled with ashes provides a metaphor for the Derridean view of language as a structure of cinders – ashes – that are held in the ‘receptacle’ of khôra. Both tropes of absence, cinders and khôra make up the structure of language that is characterized by expectation; it is, Derrida has claimed, a messianic structure that awaits the coming of something wholly other beyond language. Answering the expectation inherent in the ashen structure, the boy of the narrative emerges as a messianic figure who is wholly other, as is seen in his morality that differs from that of the survivors of the apocalypse, as well as that of the pre-apocalyptic society. In the second section of the essay, the narrative is explored from the perspective of Julia Kristeva’s theories of abjection, especially as interpreted by Barbara Creed in the analysis of horror texts. It is argued that the horrors of The Road are represented in different figurations of the maternal. For the protagonists, literal and figurative wombs are sources of abject horror, and the main maternal figure of the narrative, the wife/mother of the protagonists, is conflated in the unnamed man’s dreams with the abject monster in the cave-dream in the opening of the narrative.

"Er kvinnosyn visar sig i er politik men också i ert förhållningssätt och i ert språkbruk": En textanalys med genusperspektiv på Sverigedemokraternas partiprogram2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

The Syntax of Tenselessness: On Copying Constructions in Swedish2005Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis investigates three construction types in Swedish where two (or more) verbs display identical inflectional morphology (COPYING) and share one overt subject. The constructions are referred to as (i) T(ENSE)M(OOD)A(SPECT)-COPYING complements, of the form John started and wrote (John started writing), (ii) PARTICIPLE COPYING complements, of the form John had been-able written (John had been able to write), and (iii) PSEUDOCOORDINATIONS, of the form John sat and wrote (John was writing). (i) and (ii) differ from (iii) in alternating with infinitives. (ii) differs from (i) and (iii) in restricting copying to participial form and in being incompatible with a linking element (corresponding to 'and'). The main claim is that the construction types are three surface variants of one and the same phenomenon, involving complementation and semantically vacuous inflection on the embedded verb(s). The differences between them are argued to be derivable from independent factors. (i) and (iii) are shown to differ from (ii) w.r.t. amount of functional structure present in the embedded clause. Matrix verbs in (iii) are shown to instantiate light verb uses of otherwise lexical verbs. Copying complements are argued to instantiate subtypes of "tenseless" infinitivals (infinitivals whose tense orientation fully overlaps with that of the matrix clause), characterized by an underspecified functional domain. Copying is assumed to be a surface reflection of (Agree-type) dependencies between functional heads of the same label; features of the embedded functional heads copy values from the corresponding functional heads in the matrix clause. Arguments for treating copying complements as instantiating restructuring are presented. It is proposed that copying complements differ from non-copying infinitival complements in being subject to valuation from the matrix functional domain. This suggests that an imporant aspect of (possibility of) restructuring is alternation between unmarked (negatively specified) and unvalued varieties of the same features.

Våtmarksord i lulemålen: en ordgrupp sedd ur informant- och intervjuarperspektiv1992Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The grass of wetlands in northern Sweden has been utilized for mowing and pasture even in our time. There are a large number of words and expressions, expecially in the dialects, to denote and describe the various types of wetlands. The chief aim of the thesis is to investigate some 40 wetland terms in a limited area - the old parish of Luleå, Norrbotten, in northern Sweden - in order to establish their distribution, meanings and use. The aim of the study is also to illustrate different semantic aspects, such as semantic features, semantic fields, the relationship between common nouns and place-names, as well as explanations based on the appearance of the wetlands. The material consists of words that derive from archives, the literature on the subject and interviews with 43 informants, and has been supplemented with studies of the wetlands themselves.Three semantically similar words, drävj, dröla and dovei, are scrutinized and compared with reference to their frequency and distribution, position, humidity, vegetation, form and depth of the ground. To illustrate the relationship between words and referents the author investigates what words are used about (small) muddy pools in a swamp (mire) and about the dry parts of a swamp (in technical language called flarkar and strängar, respectively). The words drävj and dröla are compared with five other words for 'depression/hollow' etc. and 'small pool' etc. Similarities and differences are illustrated in three figures on the basis of criteria like depression/hollow, humidity and size. The words are often explained with reference to special places in the area or to adjacent places, the names of which contain the word in question. With two pairs of words as examples, grande and skärpa, and drävj and dröla, respectively, the author investigates the meanings of the words and their referents and the explanatory strategies of the informants. The author stresses the dependence of word explanations and the learning of words on their contexts and functional situations. This aspect is illustrated in a chapter which summerizes how the author's semantic views of dövel, dröla and drävj have been formed. This is done with reference to the so-called prototype theory.

    Abstract [en]

This study investigated the effects of an intensive training period in decoding and spelling with the Wendick model Intensive Reading for students diagnosed with dyslexia. A further aim of the study was to examine the students’ experience of the intense training period. The study included three students, two intervention students in grades 5 and 7 and a control student in grade 5, with diagnosed dyslexia. During five weeks, the two intervention students were involved in intensive training in decoding and spelling with the Wendick model Intensive Reading. The results showed that the intervention students had become more confident in their decoding and spelling on the lists and words included in the training materials. Normalized and standardized pre- and posttests, conducted before and after the intervention, showed positive effects in decoding ability. However, no significant changes had occurred in spelling ability, although the intervention student in grade 7 showed some progress. The students' experience of the training were positive: their motivation had increased, they felt that they had improved both in reading and spelling, and they affirmed their willingness to continue training with reading lists. In conclusion, this study proposes that also older students with diagnosed dyslexia can benefit from intensive training in decoding and spelling.

La invisibilidad como recurso literario antropológico de crítica poscolonial en La Ciudad de la Bestias2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [es]

Nyorden som speglar nutiden: En korpusundersökning av hur 37 nyord har etablerat sig i svenskt skriftspråk2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Performing Space—A Modernist Hembygd : An Exploration of Sara Lidman’s Works2014In: Journal of Northern Studies, ISSN 1654-5915, Vol. 8, no 1, p. 37-66Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [de]

    Abstract [en]

The objective of the present study was to highlight preschool children’s encounters with children’s literature, in a heterogeneous language context.  The idea was to identify significant features in the linkages between the reading of children’s literature, didactic activities and children’s learning, language development and emergent literacy activities.  Our interest was directed towards the activities connected with read-alouds, as well as the preschool teacher’s perceptions of those activities.  The empiric material was collected by use of participant observations of four read-aloud sessions. After the observations the preschool teacher in charge of the observed read-aloud was in-depth interviewed. In addition, the physical print environment in the actual preschool was observed. The results indicate that the physical and social reading environment interact with each other.  Furthermore, the preschool  teachers’ approaches and ways of working with literature does not always optimize the language, literacy and content area  learning opportunities for the children. Read-alouds were often held in connection with meals, during the so called reading rest.  Our conclusions are that the learning conditions would be further optimized if read-alouds were conducted when the children are alert and if follow-up activities including dialogues were made standard.

The Dependence of Frequency Distributions on Multiple Meanings of Words, Codes and Signs2018In: Physica A: Statistical Mechanics and its Applications, ISSN 0378-4371, E-ISSN 1873-2119, Vol. 490, p. 554-564Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The dependence of the frequency distributions due to multiple meanings of words in a text is investigated by deleting letters. By coding the words with fewer letters the number of meanings per coded word increases. This increase is measured and used as an input in a predictive theory. For a text written in English, the word-frequency distribution is broad and fat-tailed, whereas if the words are only represented by their first letter the distribution becomes exponential. Both distribution are well predicted by the theory, as is the whole sequence obtained by consecutively representing the words by the first L = 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 letters. Comparisons of texts written by Chinese characters and the same texts written by letter-codes are made and the similarity of the corresponding frequency-distributions are interpreted as a consequence of the multiple meanings of Chinese characters. This further implies that the difference of the shape for word-frequencies for an English text written by letters and a Chinese text written by Chinese characters is due to the coding and not to the language per se.

Bilingual Code-Switching in a Swedish Context: A study of three Swedish-Arabic and three Swedish-English speakers2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Code-Switching (CS) is a world-wide phenomenon, allowing bilinguals across the globe to alternate effortlessly between their languages. As interesting as it sounds, code-switching can be used for a number of reasons, and there are different linguistic contexts in which this phenomenon occurs. Umeå is a very multinational city in northern Sweden, and this paper will present the results from interviewing a group of three (a) Arabic-Swedish speakers and a group of three (b) English-Swedish speakers on their use of language and code-switching. The results show that group a and group b both use CS as a tool to express themselves better, and also to feel a sense of belonging in their different surroundings. Being a bilingual usually comes with two cultures, and this includes many different situations in which these bilinguals use CS.

Conflicting ideologies: When the ideological Meets the Perceived and Operational- A Study of primary teachers' attitudes, perceptions and practice of Seychelles Creole (Kreol Seselwa) and English as mediums of instruction in the Seychelles Primary Schools.2018In: Norsk og internasjonal lærerutdanningsforskning: Hvor er vi? Hvor vil vi gå? Hva skal vi gjøre nå? / [ed] Kari Smith, Norway: Fagbokforlaget, 2018, p. 129-151Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper builds on Zelime & Deutschmann, 2016, where we examined language ideologies/directives in the Ideological and Formal domains of the curriculum in a multilingual postcolonial context – the Seychelles. Our overall conclusion from this work was that there was a clear mismatch between the roles that different languages were ascribed in these two domains. In this paper we look at manifestations of the Ideological and Formal curricula in the Perceived and Operational domains of the curriculum, more specifically, the language beliefs, attitudes and classroom practices of primary school teachers. We base our findings on questionnaire answers from 142 respondents in 22 primary schools, coupled with classroom observations and teacher interviews. The Seychelles has a fairly typical postcolonial language-in-education system and follows a transitional model of medium of instruction (hereafter MoI). In this system children are taught in Kreol Seselwa (hereafter K.S.), the mother tongue of the vast majority, during the first two years of schooling after which it is replaced by English. Officially, K.S. retains its role as a “support language”, but in reality, controversies surround this practice. Our results indicate that while K.S. plays a central role in the everyday lives of the teachers, they are surprisingly negative to its role in education. The majority want to see it removed altogether and replaced by an English-only model. At the same time most teachers also acknowledge the importance of K.S. as a support language. Using a framework of postcolonial theory, we try to explain this inconsistency.

Revisiting the Trilingual Language-in-Education policy in the Seychelles National Curriculum Framework and Subject Curricula: Intentions and Practice2016In: Island Studies, Indian Ocean/Océan Indien, ISSN 1694-2582, Vol. 3, no 1, p. 50-59Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The policy documents of a country’s education system can provide evidence of that particular country’s vision for its people’s socio-economic, socio-cultural and academic development. Such documents can also say much about the power relations between different languages that might be represented within it. Educators, policy makers, educational leaders, teachers, learners and parents are some key players directly or indirectly affected by these policy documents. Using Critical Discourse Analysis and Spolsky’s (2004, 2012) framework for language policy analysis, this paper investigates the trilingual language-in-education policy in the Seychelles National Curriculum Framework (2013) and three Subject Curricula (English, Kreol Seselwa and French), with the aim to explore how the documents relate at the levels of policy planning, implementation and practice. Our findings reveal that there are discrepancies between the overarching Curriculum Framework, where all three national languages are given central roles and equal status, and the Subject Curricula, where clear differences in the power and functions of the languages emerge. Further, on a more pragmatic level, it is of concern that the current policy documents do not explicitly acknowledge the role of the language instruction as a vehicle for learning when describing learning goals and terminal objectives – a good understanding of English (the current L2 medium of instruction) is a prerequisite for succeeding in education. Further, the lack of attention to the question of L2 writing literacy and the fact that Seychellois students have to become fairly advanced English writers at an early age if they want to communicate their knowledge across the curriculum is particularly disconcerting.

    Investigating teacher-supported peer assessment for EFL writing2014In: ELT Journal, ISSN 0951-0893, E-ISSN 1477-4526, Vol. 68, no 2, p. 155-168Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Concerns over the quality of peer feedback and entrenched teacher-driven learning have resulted in the limited use of peer assessment in Chinese EFL writing instruction. This study sought to effectively implement peer assessment for EFL writing in China, by addressing learners' concerns through tailor-made teacher intervention strategies. Eighteen English majors participated in peer assessment for nine writing tasks. Pre-intervention surveys elicited learners' concerns over peer assessment, leading to the design of teacher-led support strategies. Post-task surveys examined learners' satisfaction with teacher-supported peer assessment, and were supplemented by the assignment feedback data. The results show that a dynamic and continuous teacher support approach to peer assessment was reported which proved to substantially affect learners' perceptions, and the nature and the perceived value of peer assessment respectively. This paper provides implications for EFL writing teachers regarding pedagogic motivation and strategies for the effective use of peer assessment.

Studies in language and cognition2009Collection (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Using a plethora of concepts, theories and methods, the theoretical and empirical studies described in this volume are united in their approach of treating language not in isolation (e.g. as a “module”), but as both based on structures and processes of cognition, and at the same time as affecting the human mind. The book is organized in 7 parts, corresponding to some of the major fields in language research today: (a) linguistic meta-theory and general issues, (b) lexical meaning, (c) metaphor, (d) grammar, (e) pragmatics, (f) gesture and bodily communication, and (g) historical linguistics. At the same time, the non-modular approach to language adopted by the authors is reflected by the fact that there are no strict boundaries between the parts. Thus, the book is a valuable contribution to the growing interdisciplinary field of Language and Cognition.

Il cinema di piombo: L`eredità degli anni di piombo nel cinema italiano dagli anni `70 ad oggi2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [it]

The Role of Place-Names in Olof Sirma’s two Yoik Texts and their Translations2017In: Journal of Northern Studies, ISSN 1654-5915, Vol. 11, no 1, p. 71-93Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article discusses the place-names in two old Sami yoik songs. These songs, provided by Olof Sirma, a Sami student, were published in Sami and Latin in Schefferus’ book Lapponia in 1673. They became known as the winter song and the summer song. The winter song is a kind of travel account in which a lover tells about his journey by reindeer sledge. In the summer song he dreams about his absent love. Before the end of the twentieth century both love songs were translated many times into various languages. The article takes up the placenames, the landscape described in the songs as well as the homeland of Sirma and the places mentioned in the texts. It discusses what the respective translators did with the place-names from the Latin source texts, in what way they changed the landscape in their translated versions, how, through misreading, a place-name could become the name of a girl or how a place-name was used for personal ends as proof of a questionable thesis. When, in the twentieth century, translators turned to the Sami source texts, the original landscape gradually emerges again.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to investigate how two teachers support reading comprehension in the subjects Swedish and Social science in primary school in a specialized teaching group for students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

The study included eight classroom observations, four in Swedish and four in Social science. The study took place in a specialised teaching group which was divided into two different groups based on age and skill level. In one group there were three students aged 7-10 years and in the other group there were three students aged 10-13 years. Four observations in each group were performed.

The study also included two interviews with the teachers to follow up on their views on instruction of reading comprehension for students with ASD.

During the observations, both teachers gave much praise and acknowledgment to the students and they used photographs, films and other concrete materials in their teaching. Both teachers made adjustments for the students. They provided the students with texts with adjusted layouts, the students were offered to listen to the texts, and in writing tasks the teacher acted as a secretary to aid the students in handwriting. None of the teachers used Lena Franzén's materials where the students are asked to read a text and then answer detailed questions as well as questions based on inference about the text. One of the teachers used a similar working process with texts as the one used in Lena Franzéns material. None of the teachers used all the four strategies of reciprocal teaching during the observations: predict content, identify new words in the text, ask your own questions to the text, sort out and summarize the text. But both teachers occasionally used some of the elements from both reciprocal teaching and from Lena Franzén's material.

Att ställa sin estetik på intet: En studie av modernistisk prosaestetik i Thorsten Jonssons roman Konvoj2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The focus of this essay lies on examining the modernistic aesthetics of prose in Thorsten Jonsson’s novel Konvoj (1947). When Walter Benjamin wrote ”The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction” he proved that new technological inventions affected the reception of art. By studying Konvoj in light of Benjamin’s theory, this study indicates that the technology of modernity affects the narrative and the use of metaphors in the novel. In addition I want to investigate how Konvoj can be studied through the theories of Marshall Berman, Theodor W. Adorno and Anthony Giddens, and this by envisioning the modernistic prose as a response to the 19th century modernity. This study illustrates that the style and the narrative aspects of the novel can be understood through modernity, and that the plot (and the characters) are all affected by it. The protagonist of the novel, Antoni Borowski, becomes an object when he is caught in a situation he can’t control, but also a subject when caught in situations he is capable of taking control of. The analysis shows that Konvoj is not only an innovative and an experimental novel in terms of its narrative, but also a novel in which the distinction between nature and culture affects the protagonist Borowski with confusion and alienation.

    Abstract [en]

This essay examines how grief is created and expressed in the poetry collections Det här är hjärtat by Bodil Malmsten and Nattliga samtal by Elisabeth Rynell. Based on a theory that emotions are created in a contact between subject and object, it appears in the survey that narrator in each collection of poems expressing and handles grief differently. The narrator in Det här är hjärtat is static and will never come out of grief while the narrator in Nattliga samtal is dynamic and moves on from sorrow.

A Narrative of Fear: Advice to Mothers2015In: Literature and medicine, ISSN 0278-9671, E-ISSN 1080-6571, Vol. 33, no 1, p. 113-131Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Taking present-day research into so-called new momism and intense mothering as a starting point, this article argues that the current mothering discourse, rather than articulating a new phenomenon, perpetuates a regulative discourse developed in the nineteenth century, in advice books written by medical doctors for pregnant women and new mothers. Both the Victorian and the present-day texts play on feelings of guilt and inadequacy in order to control the actions and emotions of mothers, although the threatened outcome differs: present-day mothers are warned that their children may become obese or develop neuropsychological disorders, whereas Victorian mothers are warned that their children might die.

Introduction: explaining and exploring the dead or absent mother2017In: The absent mother in the cultural imagination: missing, presumed dead / [ed] Berit Åström, Basingstoke: Palgrave Macmillan, 2017, p. 1-21Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This chapter addresses the question of why the dead/absent mother-trope is invoked in so many narratives and the many answers given, in mainstream conversations in various online media as well as in scholarly analyses. The chapter includes an overview of previous scholarly research, which is grouped according to the explanatory model given, rather than chronologically. Such an organization generates useful insights, not only into how scholars have approached the dead/absent mother-trope, but also into the transhistorical character of the trope itself. The chapter is concluded with an overview of the other chapters in the anthology, showing how they demonstrate that the dead/absent mother-trope is a cultural conversation that transcends historical and generic divisions.

"Let's get those Winchesters pregnant": Male pregnancy in Supernatural fan fiction2010In: Transformative Works and Cultures, ISSN ISSN 1941-2258, Vol. 4Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article investigates mpreg slash fiction—same-sex relationships featuring male pregnancy—based on the television series Supernatural, looking at issues of gender and genre. It has been argued that slash writing is a highly subversive and resisting activity, appropriating someone else's characters and rewriting the romance script to suit different tastes than those prescribed by patriarchy. Yet fan fic texts are very diverse and it is difficult, if not impossible, to draw any general conclusions from them. The theme of male pregnancy has the potential to produce narratives that challenge our notions of gender, identity, sexual and social practices, as well as parenthood. Although the fan fiction I have analyzed all deals with these notions in various ways, the focus lies elsewhere. The authors of the texts focus more on exploring Sam and Dean as fathers and homemakers, on writing about family life, with all its traditional trappings. When the authors bring pregnancy into the equation, they draw on narrative and social conventions that follow this experience, resulting in conventional stories set in a very unconventional universe

Marginalizing motherhood: postfeminist fathers and dead mothers in animated film2017In: The absent mother in the cultural imagination: missing, presumed dead / [ed] Berit Åström, Basingstoke: Palgrave Macmillan, 2017, p. 241-258Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

It is a commonplace that very few mothers survive to the end of animated feature films. The construction of the families and fathers the mothers leave behind has changed over the last few decades, however, as well as the reasons the mothers disappear. In this chapter, the films The Little Mermaid (1995), Beauty and the Beast (1991) and Aladdin (1992) are contrasted to the more recent Finding Nemo (2003), Chicken Little (2005) and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (2009). This chapter analyzes how the trope of the dead mother intersects with the trend towards representations of postfeminist fatherhood in popular culture, and discusses how a new type of parenting is created, which, although progressive in many ways, is still predicated on the absence of the mother.

Post-feminist fatherhood and the marginalization of the mother in Cormac McCarthy's the road2018In: Women - A Cultural Review, ISSN 0957-4042, E-ISSN 1470-1367, Vol. 29, no 1, p. 112-128Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Critics have tended to dismiss feminist analyses of Cormac McCarthy's works as misguided, labelling investigations of potential narrative misogyny in his novels as irrelevant. In this article, the author argues that such investigations are, on the contrary, highly relevant in the current climate of mother-blaming. The author specifically explains how McCarthy’s 2006 dystopian novel The Road uses post-feminist fatherhood to valorize the father and vilify the mother, thus participating in a continuing cultural trend of privileging fathers over mothers. The Road invokes traditional cultural expectations of motherhood and fatherhood, presenting the mother as unable and unwilling to care for the boy, in stark contrast to the very competent and able father. Many literary analyses of this highly acclaimed novel have unquestioningly accepted the post-feminist marginalization of the mother, and critics have elaborated on and developed the mother-blaming in the novel in a move that the author terms ‘critical co-writing’. Critical co-writing occurs when critics ally themselves with an author, rather than retaining a critical distance, and represent the author's ideas without problematizing them. In the case of The Road, many critics build on post-feminist cues in the novel, adding their own, unreflected, understandings of motherhood and fatherhood. In so doing, they reinterpret and rewrite the novel into an even more forceful presentation of flawed mothering. In a critical discussion of these readings, the author demonstrates how these critics transform the novel's implicit criticism of the mother character into explicit condemnation.

Referred pain: privileging male emotions in narrative instances of female physical suffering2011In: Journal of Gender Studies, ISSN 0958-9236, E-ISSN 1465-3869, Vol. 20, no 2, p. 125-137Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article analyses literary patterns of female subordination, and focuses in particular on what the author terms "referred pain." By juxtaposing two early modern texts, William Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus and Aphra Behn's Oroonoko, with two modern visual texts, John Woo's Mission Impossible 2 and Baz Lurhman's Moulin Rouge, the author discusses the recurring trope of privileging male emotional suffering over female physical suffering, and suggests that one reason for the continuing popularity of this can be sought in the kinship system and its exchange of women. The article argues for the application of a transhistorical perspective when studying literature, as a means of revealing patterns that may otherwise go unnoticed.

    Abstract [en]

Drawing on medieval medical encyclopaedias, early modern and Victorian advice books, as well as twentieth scientific advice to mothers, and linking them to present-day mothering discourse in the media, this article discusses cultural attitudes towards breast-milk and nursing mothers. The texts present a paradox in that while breast-milk is claimed as the best food for an infant, and mothers who choose not to nurse are vilified, it is simultaneously discussed as a potential poison and corrupting agent. I argue that the fear of breast-milk is a symptom of a cultural anxiety that periodically resurfaces, constructing the maternal body as threat to the infant, a threat that must be controlled and contained.

The absent mother in the cultural imagination: missing, presumed dead2017Collection (editor) (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This anthology explores the recurring trope of the dead or absent mother in Western cultural productions. Across historical periods and genres, this dialogue has been employed to articulate and debate questions of politics and religion, social and cultural change as well as issues of power and authority within the family. Åström seeks to investigate the many functions and meanings of the dialogue by covering extensive materials from the 1200s to 2014 including hagiography, romances, folktales, plays, novels, children's literature and graphic novels, as well as film and television. This is achived by looking at the discourse both as products of the time and culture that produced the various narratives and as part of an on-going cultural conversation that spans the centuries, resulting in an innovative text that will be of great interest to all scholars og gender, feminist and media studies.

The Politics of Tradition: Examining the History of the Old English poems The Wife's Lament and Wulf and Eadwacer2008Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    Book Description:

In recent years, Anglo-Saxonists have widened the scope of their studies to include not only various aspects of Anglo-Saxon society and literature, but also their own discipline. Studying the scholarship on The Wife's Lament and Wulf and Eadwacer, Åström examines the roles of these scholars in the critical history of the two poems. These poems are two of the most haunting, and at the same time cryptic, texts of the entire Old English corpus. Because of these characteristics, the research they inspire is wide-ranging, imaginative and provocative. The study focuses mainly on two aspects of scholarly research: the emergence of a professional identity among Anglo-Saxonist scholars and their choice of either a metaphoric or metonymic approach to the material. A final chapter charts the concomitant changes within Old English feminist studies. The study summarises the approaches to points of ambiguity in the poems and provides a comprehensive bibliography of twentieth century scholarship on the two texts, which should make it not only a concise introduction to the field of Old English studies, but also a useful work of reference for anyone wishing to pursue further research on the poems.

The Politics of Tradition: Examining the History of the Old English Poems The Wife's Lament and Wulf and Eadwacer2002Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Old English literary studies is a fascinating field of research which spans many various approaches including philology and linguistics as well as literary and cultural theories. The field is characterised by a certain conservatism, what in this thesis is referred to as tradition. This thesis examines the scholarship on The Wife's Lament and Wulf and Eadwacer, projecting its cumbersome affinities with tradition as a conservative force as well as the resistance against it. The investigation focuses mainly on two aspects of scholarly research: the emergence of a professional identity among Anglo-Saxonist scholars and their choice of either a metaphoric or metonymic approach to the material. A final chapter studies the concomitant changes within Old English feminist studies. The thesis also summarises the approaches to points of ambiguity in the poems, and provides a comprehensive bibliography of scholarship on the two texts.

Rape in Stieg Larsson's Millennium Trilogy and Beyond: Contemporary Scandinavian and Anglophone Crime Fiction2013Collection (editor) (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

With its powerful images of rape and revenge, Stieg Larsson's bestselling Millennium trilogy has made a major impact on the contemporary crime novel. This collection explores the role that rape plays in contemporary crime fiction, examining the sexually violent images at the heart of the Millennium trilogy in its many guises – from novels, to Swedish film adaptations, to Hollywood blockbuster. At the centre of discussion is Larsson's female heroine, Lisbeth Salander, one of popular culture's most unforgettable characters. The collection evaluates her status as a twenty-first century heroine, arguing that what makes Salander so interesting and culturally relevant, is her blend of vulnerability and violence.

Putting Larsson's work into dialogue with a range of contemporary Scandinavian and Anglophone crime novelists, including Jo Nesbø, Håkan Nesser, Mo Hayder and Val McDermid, these essays offer cross-cultural insights into how notions of sexual violence, victims and vengeance are constructed. Opening up a range of vital new questions, the book interrogates the very terms by which we understand and encounter violent images in popular fiction and film.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study is to find out what measures and methods teachers and special educators use to strengthen students with reading and writing difficulties in everyday teaching. The survey highlights how teachers and special educators look at reading and writing skills and, in the theoretical background, what earlier researchers say. The study is based on qualitative analysis of interviews. The survey consists of two teachers and three special education teachers active in three different schools.

The result shows a great convergence of the concept of reading and writing difficulties among both teachers and special education teachers. The study also shows that both teachers and special educators agree that they are experiencing deficiencies in students' ability to read and write and this affects whatever topic the student is taught in. The respondents in the study claim that the causes of the difficulties were due to biological, social and educational factors.  Views on what constitute favorable methods are similar among both teachers and special education teachers, and generally it has been found that all respondents strive to adapt the daily teaching for all pupils' needs and abilities. In order to strengthen student's reading and writing they receive intensive training in reading periods, customized texts, adjusted text amount and compensatory aids in everyday teaching. Another important factor that emerged from the study was the time factor. It is an important prerequisite to take action and think long term for the students with reading and writing disabilities.

Portrayals of lobotomy in American and Swedish media2013In: Literature, neurology and neuroscience: neurological and psychiatric disorders / [ed] Stanley Finger, François Boller and Anne Stiles, Amsterdam: Elsevier , 2013, p. 201-217Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Psychosurgery has a long history dating back to the 1880s when Gottlieb Burckhardt performed focal cerebral cortical excisions on the brains of six patients diagnosed with schizophrenia. His operations were vividly contested by the medical community of the time. In 1936, when Walter J. Freeman and James W. Watts performed their initial prefrontal lobotomies in the United States, they were met with some professional opposition from superintendents, who would not provide them with patients for the operation. However, Freeman and Watts managed to cope well with the opponents. In newspapers and magazines, the curiosity for lobotomy was obvious. Freeman was instrumental in the way he promoted lobotomy, and he evoked the interest of the press and the journalists for this new surgical treatment on mental illness, something that he regarded as a medico-historical breakthrough. In this chapter, the portrayal of lobotomy in American and Swedish newspapers and magazines is explored and analyzed. How did journalists write about lobotomy for the public in the years spanning 1936 to 1959, a period in which the American and Swedish presses appeared inclined to describe the positive effects of lobotomy, while neglecting the negative and fatal consequences of the operation. There are not only similarities but also interesting differences between the Swedish and the American articles depicting lobotomy. The media can be a powerful factor in the construction of “facts,” which can significantly affect decisions made by people about their health issues.
