Politisk representation i lokaltidningen: "Ettans" makt2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study, Political representation in the local paper - the power of the front page, shows how the local paper Västerbottens-kuriren chooses, consciously or unknowingly, to represent politics on the front page during the election period of 2018. Given the premises that journalists must adhere to, could affect the reporting of politics.

The method for this study was a quantitative content analysis where a frequency count is used based on headline, preamble and to some extent image use on the front page.

The study concluded that the newspaper had some political news, but that they were majorly excluded from appearing in the most visible article on the front page. The most common subjects that were on the front page were personal articles, or culture and entertainment oriented, which indicates a greater exposure to "softer" news. Of the political articles, the topic "other" was most prevalent, but also economics and business was a frequently recurring political topic. It was also shown that there was a gap in July when the frequency of political articles was reduced. The most widely used framing used by the political articles was game framing, which indicates a repetitive behavior on the part of journalists which, in the worst case scenario, could lead to skepticism against both politics and against the newspaper from the public.

Musik i förskolan2006Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Samme Fader han dock Bliver: En litteraturstudie angående gudsbilden i två barnbiblar2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This is a comparative literature study between two children’s bibles and the Swedish Bible. The study compares three stories from the Bible with the children’s bible versions of them. The purpose of the study is to see whether God is portrayed differently in the children’s bibles, and if so, in what way. The study uses narrtology to analyze the chosen texts and a hermeneutical frame of interpretation to ascertain what the difference between the versions of the same story is and if and how this effects the meaning, message or image of God conveyed by the original text. The study finds that many liberties have been taken with the original stories, the most frequent of which being different form of censorship. This is achieved by excluding violent and/or cruel parts of the stories in the children’s bible versions, or adding elements such as descriptions of positive emotions to God’s actions or enhancing the bond between God and other agents of the story.

The study is largely based on the work of Sören Dalevi and his dissertation Gud som haver barnen kär – Barnsyn, gudsbild och Jesusbild i Barnens bibel och Bibeln I berättelser och bilder, but this study is conducted on a much lower level and smaller scale.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The focus of this study is the two autobiographical novels Den högsta kasten (1997) and Djävulsformeln (2000) by Swedish author Carina Rydberg. Both novels generated lively public debate regarding how they ought to be read and understood, what genre they belonged to, and the ontological status of the narrating “I”. The aim is to investigate why the protagonist, Carina, is perceived as unintelligible by many readers and explore how she can be understood in relation to what constitutes an intelligible identity from a literary and cultural perspective.

The novels, as well as their protagonist, are approached from the perspective of genre theory, the argument being that Carina’s unintelligibility is directly dependent on what genre she is read in relation to. In the first part of the thesis the ambiguities of autobiographical texts are discussed, and the narrative and protagonist are analyzed in relation to the autobiographical genre. In the second part of the thesis the consequences of reading the texts as examples of the Gothic with emphasis on monstrosity, the uncanny and sexual transgression are examined. The two readings demonstrate how interpretations of text and character are highly influenced by the reader's expectations connected to genre. Rydberg’s transgression of the norms of genre, gender, and identity leaves the reader with a contradictory set of genre-specific expectations, which in turn makes it difficult to understand and accept the protagonist.

The main theme of both novels is Carina’s unsuccessful attempts to reconcile what she sees as two separate, essentially incompatible identities: woman and author. The final chapter includes a comparative study in which Rydberg’s novels are linked to works by other Swedish female writers, both past and contemporary, to demonstrate that the conflict of woman versus author is a common problem for female writers. The thesis closes with a discussion about the possibility of placing Rydberg in a specifically female literary tradition and demonstrate how a feminist analysis can make the unintelligible intelligible.

    Abstract [en]

This thesis describes the impact of the notion of a calling on the development of the nursing profession during the period 1850–1933. The focus of the study is on how perceptions andnotions of a calling were altered over time, and in which way this historically shaped conceptinfluenced the professionalisation of the female health care work. Some contexts of relevancefor the notion of a calling and which are emphasised in the thesis are the women’s rights movement, the expansion of the civil servants’ movement, the professionalisation and modernisationof the health care system as well as the general secularisation of society.

The study consists of three parts. The first part constitutes a conceptual background tothe notion of a calling and here the Christian heritage of ideas is examined. The second partof the thesis describes three leading institutions of nursing education: the Ersta Institution ofdeaconesses (1851), the Red Cross education (1867), and the Sophia Home (1884). The study shows how Lutheran features influenced these educational institutions, mainly the educationof the deaconesses. The meaning of the calling differed between the deaconesses and thenurses of the Sophia Home. The deaconnesses’ notion of a calling emphasised the value ofhumbly serving fellow beings, whereas the Sophia Home attached more importance to theelevated and noble aspect of the calling.

The third part of the thesis is the most comprehensive one. It is here analysed how the circlearound the Swedish Nursing Association (SNA), used and related to the notion of a calling during the period 1910–1933. The description is structured under four themes. The first describes how the notion of a calling expresses a particular professional ideal and an ethical attitude characterised by a Lutheran work ethics with strong altruistic features. Under the second theme, the gendered perception of the vocation is discussed. It is claimed that the nursingprofession was not unambiguously permeated by feminine gendered perceptions. Instead the nurses’ professional ideal espoused a mixture of masculine and feminine gendered metaphors.Under the third theme, it becomes clear that the nurses’ proclamation of a calling strengthened and increased the status of the profession. Under the fourth theme, the nurses’notion of a calling is related to two male professional groups, doctors and clergymen, and thepessimistic and sombre spirit of time at the turn of the century, 1900. The general secularisation of society, and the gradual modernisation of the health care sector seemed to have contributedto a need for a professional corps, marked by strong tradition, apparently considereda guarantee for a health care system that would still comprise Christian love.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Breaking the Taboo of Mental Health2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The latest statistics from the National institute of mental health says that almost 14% of India’s population suffer from mental illness. Of these roughly 10% are suffering from depression, anxiety or substance use. The study says that due to the stigma associated with mental disorders, nearly 80% had not received any treatment despite being ill for over 12 months.

This is my starting point, and the project is about mental health and creating a suitable, caring environment where people dare to open up on this rather taboo topic, and also in the case of more severe illness, that people can get admitted and receive the help they need in order to get better.

    Abstract [en]

The Gujarat region, in which Ahmedabad is situated, is renowned for its textile production methods. The crafts of refining textile has been passed down from generation to generation for centuries and thereby the knowledge has been preserved. In recent years this chain of knowledge has been challenged through the efficiency and economical gain of chemical dyes and mass-production.

The aim of the project is to widen the knowledge about the craft behind the textile and give room for the skill to be passed down to the next generation while at the same time give room for developing the techniques and designs to fit the current mode.

A large part of the project evolves around the process of refining textile and the basis for my understanding of the crafts and their spatial requirements has mainly been through looking into the process of three resist-dye techniques. By looking at the process of each technique I was able to find where their spatial requirements overlap and how they could be organized according to production process.

The project consist of two parts, one dedicated to the craft of refining and producing textile and one part where the work of the craftsmen can be exhibited, tailored, sold and taught through open workshops. The process of refining textile is separated from the rest of the project by the circulation. The more public part of the project is placed along the busy road as to shield the textile process from noise and dust. The two buildings are organized vertically following the logic of privacy and participation. The most private part of the refinement process, the dyeing is placed furthest away from the public while the public program become more participatory the further one climbs.

De klassiska sekulariseringsteoriernas arv: En kvalitativ, komparativ litteraturstudie om Weber och Durkheims sekulariseringsteorier och deras giltighet idag.2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The secularization theses has over the last decade been a central issue within the sociology of religion. The two classic theses has been criticized for being one-sided and only focus on the change from traditional to modern society. The intention of this study is to evaluate this critique and to discuss what is defendable in the early secularization thesis in our contemporary world. This essay’s primary purpose is to compare the secularization theses Weber’s The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism and Durkheim’s The Elementary Forms of Religious Life. I use two analytical models, posing three levels and three categories of secularization, in order to make the comparison explicit. The levels are societal, organization and individual. The categories are descriptive, normative and analytic. As result I have found that there are perspectives of the classical theses of Weber and Durkheim that is defendable in the contemporary world. The critique is valid in some aspects, but not in every.

    Abstract [en]

This thesis intends to examine a sámi perspective on Swedish educational policy between 1962 and 1994. To do so the curriculum of the Swedish schools and the sámi schools are analyzed. The sámi perspective in the thesis is represented by the debate about educational policy in a sámi journal, Samefolket. The results show that the Swedish curriculums from 1962-1994 don’t mention the sámi people and only the last one, the one from 1980, are stating shortly that groups within Sweden are to be treated with solidarity. Otherwise the sámis aren’t mentioned. In the curriculums for the sámi schools that only permitted sámi children, one can find that the purpose of those schools were to strengthen the sámi people in their culture and language. In the debate about education politics in the journal Samefolket it appears that there were three themes of subjects that were central in the debate. The first was the debate on the organizational form of the sámi schools. It appears that the voices in the debate of educational policy in Samefolket wanted greater sami influence in the sami school, however, this study shows that the Samefolket-debate did not comment on the educational policy reforms themselves. The study shows that the sámi voices in Samefolket wanted to keep the special sámi schools and that the two motives, which was the second theme of the debate, were to keep and to defend their culture. In the curriculum för the sami schools, this was also the motive. The third theme was of how the school system in Sweden was educating the non-sámi people about the sámi. In this theme the prime focus was about how sámis were represented in Swedish textbooks and the study shows that there were, according to the voices in Samefolket, a great disappointment in these. At last, from a culture imperialistic theory one can make the observation that the sámi schools were motivated as an important institution because the Swedish school system couldn’t give the sámi an education to fulfill their cultural needs. This is a result from the analysis of the Swedish school curriculums in comparison with the debate in the journal Samefolket, where the Swedish schools were criticized for being ethnocentric in the sense that the text books presented a stereotype of the sámis. The culture, most often represented by the language, play an important role in the educational policy debate in the Samefolket, which strengthen a language-based definition of the sámi culture.

Narrating family: talk about a troublesome girlhood in the Swedish context2017In: Nordic girlhoods: new perspectives and outlooks / [ed] Bodil Formark, Heta Mulari, Myry Voipio, Palgrave Macmillan, 2017, p. 161-178Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this chapter Linda Arnell examines how conceptions and norms regarding families and family patterns influence girls' lives and the constructions of their subjectivity. Arnell focuses on 18-year-old Amanda's narrative about her families and her troublesome upbringing. The narrative is understood as a continuous creation in relation to a broader societal narrative that occurs in intra-action with the researcher, and in relation to discursive possibilities and constraints. Through this one narrative the chapter examines how normative ideas about family can be understood as regulatory power structures that are ever-present in a complex and troubled narrative about family, girlhood, and a girl with experience of acting out.

Core Prosodic Features for the Teaching of Spanish Prosody to Speakers of Swedish2016In: Journal of Spanish Language Teaching, ISSN 2324-7797, E-ISSN 2324-7800, Vol. 3, no 1, p. 44-56Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Based on previous research, this paper aims to provide thefirst stepstowards a model for the teaching of Spanish prosody to Swedishlearners by identifying main prosodic characteristics, referred to asCoreProsodic Features(CPFs), for the teaching of Spanish in a Swedish setting. The study addresses salient prosodic features of L1 Spanish in comparisonto L1 Swedish, and discusses whether the Swedish L1 features are likely tobe transferred into L2 Spanish. Another central issue of the paper iswhether such transfer is likely to interfere with communication. ThreeProsodic Core Features are identified: (1) focal-accent location, (2) vowelduration patterns, and (3) prosodic patterns in rising boundary tones.

    Abstract [en]

The paper investigates possible communicative effects caused by transfer from Swedish into L2 Spanish of prosodic patterns manifested in rising boundary tones, as occurring in the speech act of "requests". More specifically it studies whether there is any difference between transactional (+/-request for information) and interpersonal values (+/-value of friendliness) perceived in boundary tones produced in EL1, EL2 and SL1, depending on whether the evaluator is Spanish, Chilean or Swedish respectively. It also discusses whether these differences affect the valuation of the utterance in a way that may interfere with communication. The results show that the realisation of the rising boundary tones is the feature that mostly contributes to the foreign accent of Spanish spoken by Swedes. The results also show that the intersubjective value associated with a rising boundary tone is negatively affected when the intonational features of L2 Spanish do not match those of Spanish L1. Different discursive preferences in the Spanish and Swedish L1 are proposed as explanations to these results. The study finally suggests that teachers of Spanish as L2 pay attention to suprasegmental features that carry important pragmatic values, since the acquisition of these patterns can be of relevance for successful interaction with native speakers.

    Abstract [en]

This thesis sets out to identify a series of communicatively important prosodic features for the teaching of Spanish in a Swedish context. The present work also aims to highlight both the central role played by prosody in communication and the need for this skill to be integrated in the communicative competences of second language teaching and learning. The thesis comprises a collection of five studies, three of which use an experimental approach to investigate the following: (a) differences in the realization of prosodic prominence by L2 and L1 speakers of Spanish (Study I); (b) the transfer of pragmatic strategies from L1 Swedish to L2 Spanish, manifested in the realization of rising boundary tones (Study II); and (c) the contribution of the type of L2 prosody displayed by Swedish learners to a percieved foreign accent, focusing, focusing especially on the role played by rising boundary tones and their pragmatic values  (Study III). These initial studies describe some of the main prosodic characteristics of the L2 product as compared to Spanish L1, and identify prosodic features of Spanish L1 that are of importance to acquire for interactional success in the L2. Study IV highlights the fact that, despite the emphasis on a communicative approach in L2 teaching, the approach to the teaching of prosody in the Swedish curriculum and the L2 Spanish text books studied tends to be addressed as a separate skill, that is not integrated in the descriptions of the communicative competences. Study V, by combining the results of Studies I-III with those of other thematically relevant studies, proposes some main features, so-called Core Prosodic Features (CPFs), for the teaching of Spanish prosody to Swedish learners. The identification of the CPFs also enables a future evaluation of the form-focused teaching approach suggested.

Hur undervisar vi i de främmande språkens prosodi?2016In: LMS : Lingua, ISSN 0023-6330, no 01, p. 42-47Article in journal (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Patterns of Prominence in Swedish Second Language (L2) Speakers and Native (L1) Speakers of Spanish: Spontaneous Dialogue versus Read Text2013In: Studies in Hispanic and Lusophone Linguistics, ISSN 1939-0238, Vol. 6, no 2, p. 203-246Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study aims to describe and analyze prosodic differences in prominence realization in both spontaneous and read speech produced by Swedish second language speakers (L2 speakers) in comparison with native speakers (L1 speakers) of Spanish. A further aim of the study is to provide concrete descriptions of the differences between L2 and L1 prominence realization that may serve as tools for language teachers. Phonetic, phonological and to some extent pragmatic aspects will be considered. Results show that the F0 (fundamental frequency) rises in prominent words are steeper and faster in native speech than in L2 speech. Results also show that stressed vowels have longer duration in prominent words in L2 than in L1 Spanish. The number of boundary rises used by both groups differed significantly according to task and group. Pragmatic aspects, such as the use of different intersubjectivity seeking strategies, might explain differences found exclusively in the spontaneous task.

Prosody in the Foreign Language Classroom, Always Present Rarely Practised?2014In: Journal of Linguistics and Language Teaching, ISSN 2190-4677, E-ISSN 2190-4677, Vol. 5, no 2, p. 207-224Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the present paper is to highlight the central role that prosody plays for communication and to motivate the attention that arguably should be given to prosody within the foreign language classroom. The paper presents an overview of research addressing the communicative aspects of prosody, particularly focussing on L2 prosody and how classroom practice could be informed by current research. It also addresses bias from written language as one of the main explanations to the lack of attention paid to prosody in the language classroom and aims to highlight prosodic aspects of oral language that are not so much found in writing and that, due to our strong tradition of teaching languages through writing, run the risk of being forgotten. Spanish as a foreign language in a Swedish educational setting is focused upon, and the frameworks used to guide teachers’ practice, the CEFR and the curriculum, together with textbooks currently used in this setting, are analysed.

Transfer of rising tone patterns from Swedish L1 into Spanish L2 - which are the communicative consequences?2015In: Proceedings from Fonetik 2015, Lund University, Sweden / [ed] Malin Svensson Lundmark, Gilbert Ambrazaitis and Joost van de Weije, Lund: Lunds Universitet , 2015, p. 17-21Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Would prosodic transfer from Swedish L1 into Spanish L2 have any effects on communication with native Spanish speakers? The study investigates the contribution to the perceived foreign accent of the L2 prosody displayed by Swedish learners, focusing especially on the role played by rising boundary tones and their pragmatic values. Swedish L1, Spanish L1 and Spanish L2 data, analysed acoustically by Aronsson and Fant (2014), were evaluated in perception experiments with native speakers of Spanish and Swedish and the results show that the intersubjective value associated with a rising boundary tone differs depending on whether the evaluator is a native speaker of Swedish or Spanish, and that the transferred patterns not only contribute to a foreign accent, they are also capable of affecting pragmatic values.

Boundary tones in non-native speech: The transfer of pragmatic strategies from L1 Swedish into L2 Spanish2014In: Intercultural Pragmatics, ISSN 1612-295X, E-ISSN 1613-365X, Vol. 11, no 2, p. 159-198Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The pragmatic functions of pitch at tone unit boundaries are studied in L2 Spanish spoken by Swedish learners, as compared to L1 Swedish and L1 Spanish. The data are recordings of a task in which the subjects - 10 learners of Spanish and 13 native controls - make a restaurant booking on the phone in Spanish, and the Swedish subjects also perform this task in their L1. The tone unit boundary rises and falls produced have been analyzed with special focus on rises and their accompanying vowel duration patterns. The turn-regulating functions of signaling turn-continuation vs. transition-relevance are contrasted with intersubjectivity-regulating signals, namely (non-) prompts for information and ( non-) prompts for interpersonal acceptance. Since open-ended yes/no-questions are signaled by rises in Spanish, though not in Swedish, and since declaratives carrying a positive politeness value tend to end in rises (the "tail flick") in Swedish, though not in Spanish, various types of potential negative transfer could be predicted for Swedish learners' L2 Spanish. It is shown that L1 Spanish speakers consistently use moderate rises for turn-keeping and high rises for information-seeking, and that this pattern has no equivalence in the L2 Spanish data. Conversely, rises in L2 Spanish frequently occur where L1 Spanish speakers prefer falls. These rises, interpreted as "tail flicks,"also occur in L1 Swedish, but they are far more frequent in the L2 Spanish data. Thus, clear transfer patterns are found, which are further reinforced by - insecurity effects due to L2 speaking.

"Och vad Gud beträffar så tror jag att hen går hel ur det här.": En studie av ordet hens funktion i dagspress2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study analyzes the function of the Swedish gender-neutral pronoun hen with the purpose of examining how the word is used today. Aside from being used as a gender-neutral pronoun, hen is also used in other syntactical functions as well as gender-transcending functions. The study material consists of texts from daily press that have been analyzed through a quantitative method. The various uses of hen have been categorized by function and text type. The theoretical part of the study introduces language planning, feminist language planning, and the origins of hen. The results of the study indicate that hen mainly fills a syntactical function in daily press, as 143 out of 167 uses of the word were in functions that can be categorized as syntactical. The most common function of hen found in the material was hen in generic reference. Hen was used in 15 different text types within daily press, most commonly in articles and columns. In articles, hen in generic reference was most common, while in columns most of the found hen were used in a concealing function.
