    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis project was to create something, that has never been there before in motorcycle design. A new, deep collaboration between the future generation of riders and their bikes. It should create a whole new riding experience. And this experience should be inspirational and new to several fi elds of transportation design besides motorcycling.

The process started with the research and inspiration fi nding. It continued with form exploration through sketching, ergonomic tests and photoshop sketches. The whole process was based on an interdisciplinary working method. Being in touch with modelers, engineers, generative designers, color and trim designers was an essential part of the project. The interdisciplinary work continued digitally, with many different types of software. Creating the 3D visualisation of the project required the use of Alias, Cinema 4D, Rhino, Grasshopper, Fuse, Speedform, Maya and VRED. Frequently reviews on the current project status and taking part in technical meetings, along with responsible designers at BMW, in combination with weekly reviews with the university, structured the time plan throughout the whole project. As well as fl ying to the university for check-ups and presentations.

BMW Spirit provides a revolutionary experience for future motorcycle riders. Focusing on the interaction between the rider and the bike, it creates the opportunity to build a deep relationship. Since AI becomes more and more important in our daily lives developing ways of human-machine interactions will be crucial for our future. The concept is focused on the opportunities it could bring to combine an Artifi cial Intelligence with motorcycling. BMW Spirit creates a human-machine symbiosis and is controlled like an extension of the human body, with intuitive movements. The built in Artifi cial Intelligence is the rider’s companion and develops its own character and consciousness over time. It learns and grows together with the rider and adapted to the rider. Growing trust enables more possibilities to push the limits and enjoying the power of this unique riding experience.

Radical Calshes: What Tangible Interaction is Made of2013Ingår i: Proceedings of the 7th International Conference on Tangible, Embedded and Embodied Interaction - TEI '13, Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), 2013, s. 323-326Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Driven by a critique of Ishii et al’s recent vision of Radical Atoms we call for a debate on the different conceptual paradigms underlying the TEI community and its activities. TEI was initiated to share and connect different perspectives, but we feel conceptual debate is lacking. To fuel this debate, we start with comparing two paradigms by examining the Radical Atoms proposal and balance it from our design-led perspective. Our aim with this paper is to revive the richness of TEI’s multidisciplinary approach.

Finding the Familiar in the Unfamiliar: Investigating the Role of Hospitality as a Performance of Togetherness and Support for New Arrivals in the Familiar Left Behind2017Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Arriving at a new place, the stranger finds herself/himself facing the unfamiliar. In that situation, she/he is confronted with different tasks, duties and other difficulties in order to handle one own needs and desires such as settling down and creating oneself a home. This thesis aims to explore processes of arriving as well as its interrelation to concepts of hospitality.

How does hospitality as a welcoming method facilitate and support the arriving stranger?

The first part of the thesis focuses on general aspects of hospitality and its exploration. In order to approach, understand and narrow down the wide and extensive topic, a series of literature is considered and simultaneously connected to the context of my own experience and background as a newly-arrived international student. Therefore, subjective examples, in which I am hosted in and around Umeå, by different people or institutions and during the last 2 years, are investigated.

Subsequently this thesis considers existing organizations and networks in Umeå, which operate with a welcoming approach within the realm of integration, cultural exchange, and social relations.

It becomes apparent, that spaces and moments of familiarity are significant not just as a starting point for strangers to meet, bringing together differences and similarities especially through communalities such as food, music and dance, but also to provide structures for legal and further support. As a generous act, providing hospitality has the potential for facilitating needs of newly arrived people, enabling exchange and encounter to happen. It has the ability to become a tool for coexistence.

Eventually, with concepts of hospitality, sharing and communality in mind, the proposal brings together existing organizations, forming a meeting point for new and already established inhabitants of Umeå in the town center.

Spaces of Trade in Tallinn: Uncertainty and Everyday Life2015Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 30 poäng / 45 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The everyday survival of the other at

the border between ‘East’ and ‘West’

is the object of this study. The country

    in-between, Estonia, is a ‘melting

pot’ of Russian, Western and Nordic

influence, what makes this zone an

    active, diverse, nevertheless invisible

    in the global awareness.

The process of transition and rapid

    neoliberalization, which is characteristic

    for the post-socialist country

    such as Estonia, brings together

    number of side-effects, lots of

    redundant people, who could not

adapt to the new regime, who speculate

    and trade.

    The investigation of ‘Russian’

semi-official spaces of trade in Estonian

    capital, Tallinn, reveals the

values and defects of the open-air markets.

    The thesis highlights

the need to politicize the processes

    around the disappearing and/or

    transforming the open-air markets

in the city. In spite of the fact, that

the informal trading is often connected

    with poverty, illegality, low

    hygiene, distrust and crime, this

    work explores the alternative ways

of trading, the power of immediacy

    and aesthetics in confrontation to

    the global capital.

    The architecture as the transversal

    practice cuts across the patterns

    of trading based on irresponsible

    consumerism and desire, and experiments

    with the original concept

of the market with the dialogue in

    front. The speculative interventions

are the sites of the common life,

    production and renewal.

Skolmusikalen: om möten, makt och musik i två skolmusikalprojekt i årskurs nio2019Doktorsavhandling, monografi (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

The two school musical theatre projects in this case study were carried out in 2011-2012 in Year 9 at two Swedish secondary schools, Annebäckskolan and Bäråskolan, as a part of the subject “Elevens val” (Student’s Elective). The purpose of the study was to analyse how pedagogy, power and control appeared in the projects, based on the following research questions: How can the influence of the local community and leisure discourses on education be understood through the two school musical theatre projects? What pedagogical codes appear in the projects and how do they relate to time and space? What power relations are produced and why? The study was conducted through participatory observations and interviews and dialogues with participating students and teachers. The analysis had a hermeneutical approach, and the theoretical starting points were Basil Bernstein's theory and concepts, such as recontextualisation, code, classification, framing, and singular, regional and generic discourses. These theories were supplemented by a space perspective based on David Harvey and his concept of the absolute, relative and relational space. The study showed that educational traditions and relations with the local community were of importance for the production of the school musical theatre discourses. The Annebäck project was characterised by teaching in relation to the pop and rock music and theatre discourse of the municipal youth centre and a local aerobics and dance discourse. These relations provided the prerequisites for a school musical theatre project with an integrated code, open to most of the students in Year 9. The Bärå project had a collection code and was characterised by teaching related to the school’s music class, as well as to the municipal music school discourse and a local theatre and dance discourse. These relations provided the prerequisites for a project mainly open to students in the school’s music class, or to students who had chosen theatre or dance as an elective subject. The activities of the Annebäck project strengthened social cooperation between the municipal youth centre and the secondary school, while the Bärå project, as a result of its collaboration with aesthetic institutions in the local community where most of the musical students were already enrolled, broadened the school's music profile. Both projects strengthened the existing orientation of the two schools’ activities, thus contributing to and reinforcing the focus and the ideas on which they were based.

Recycle Dharavi: A sanitary upgrade2013Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Two things struck me during my time in Dharavi. The first was the bad public health and the second the ingenuity and entrepreneurial spirit of the people who lived there. The health issues, a result of inadequate sanitation, can be directly linked to the shortage of toilets. For every toilet there are a thousand users and because of this over a quarter of the people in Dharavi choose instead to publicly defecate. On the other side of the coin however, stands Dharavi’s remarkable recycling industry and in Dharavi alone 80% of Mumbai’s plastic waste is recycled and given new use.

The concept revolves around recyclability and combining industry with sanitation; recycling the produced waste and generating income. If there’s a way to profit from human waste it is likely that people would go to certain lengths to collect the necessary material. By removing the waste and converting it to humanure, positive side effect would include cleaner streets and in general a healthier population.

The idea is therefore to build a waste management facility where income is generated through the collected waste and used to improve the surrounding community. In this proposed space you can go to the toilet, throw away your trash and food waste and even use the functions provided to do chores or simply relax. The food and human waste from toilets could be used as fertilizer and sold for a profit or perhaps even used as fuel. The garbage could be collected and sorted on spot and then sold onwards for further refinement.

    Abstract [sv]

Housing Designed by Developers: The Weak Role of the Architect and the Forgotten Users2017Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (yrkesexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The Swedish housing sector has changed from being part of the welfare state into being market-driven. During the last century political decisions has enabled this change together with changes regarding the actors involved in the building industry. The role of the architect has weakened and users are not involved in the process of designing housing at all. I propose an alternative estate agency called Bricolage where the users are involved in the design process of their homes from start to finish. Bricolage would not find you the home of your dreams but instead build it together with you. The process started with interviews with the users where functions, materials, style, common spaces, light and atmosphere were discussed. The interview resulted in a written document and a storyboard that worked as a stepping stone to build the first model of the apartment. After that a second interview was held with each family to discuss the models and storyboards. Together with the family small changes were made in the model. When the separate models were finished I assembled them, making an apartment block of eight apartments. I presented the apartment block model at an event receiving very positive feedback from the user group with many of them eager to move in. Designing housing with the architect in a driving role and with a high user involvement the future design of housing can be of much higher architectural quality. The large scale industry of housing is difficult to change but small architect originated practices such as Bricolage can be a good way to take charge over the design process. A practice like Bricolage can have a close contact with the users, conduct personal interviews and really get to the core of what a family needs and want from their home. The transparent design process ensures the user that they pay for what they requested. For the architectural profession it can be a way to strengthen our role in the housing sector.

    Abstract [en]

The new church of Ytterlännäs, a large Neo-Classical sermon church, was consecrated in 1854. The old, medieval church was far too small to house the growing number of visitors. It was therefore abandoned, but managed to be spared from demolition. A couple of decades into the twentieth century did the church once again become the object of the congregation's maintenance. It was restored and has been used for services since 1939.These abandoned churches are the subject of the present dissertation. The main aim of this thesis is answering such questions as: Why where the ancient churches abandoned? Why where they later restored and which individuals or groups advocated restoration? How where the projects realized? What guiding principles informed their work and how was the practical matter of restoration done? What values did the people involved see in the restored objects? The chapter Old and New Churches is a general introduction to the subject and certain aspects of the Neo-Classical churches are treated. The chapter entitled The Congregation and the Abandoned Churches deals with the situation from the perspective of the Swedish Lutheran Church, where the Young Church movement embraced a faith in the church as a force capable of cultural renewal, which resulted in a wider interest in preservation and restoration of the old churches. The chapter The Ideology of Restoration deals with how modern ideas about restoration were mediated from Europe to Sweden. Sigurd Curman presented the new antiquarian doctrine of restoration in two articles from 1905 and 1906. The chapter The Preservation of Cultural Monuments and the Abandoned Churches shows that the restorations was made possible by the fact that the responsible authorities possessed better tools for the successful completion of their task by this time.In the chapter Erik Salvén and the Abandoned Churches the man is introduced, that meant the most for the restoration of the churches which this thesis deals with. These are the subjects of the following five chapters: Trönö in Hälsingland, Alnö in Medelpad, Ragunda and Oviken in Jämtland and Ytterlännäs in Ångermanland. The results of this thesis are discussed and summarized in the last chapter, Interpreting the History of a Church.

Elevers erfarenhet av digitalt musikskapande: En kvalitativ studie med elever i årskurs 92012Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (högskoleexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The primary argument in this thesis is that the common assumption that an actor has emotion inside him- or herself which can be evoked and projected outwards is an outdated misconception. A proposition is made to replace this possessive acting model, which underpins the realist tradition and is based on the popularized aspects of Stanislavsky’s system for actor training, by a situational acting model. This new model is founded on the idea that emotion is something that actors “do”. Furthermore, a theory of this situational model is advanced where the actor is seen to perform emotion in an interplay with action in three different ways: in the world symbolically as an expression, of the world phenomenologically as in-sensing or out-sensing, and with the world as a becoming – which opens the actor up to greater forces of nature and society.

The material in this thesis has been focused on from both a contextualizing and a theoretic perspective. The contextualizing perspective places the actor’s doing of emotions in a historical context. The theoretic aspect concentrates on how performing emotions is realized in practice, and it proceeds from an analysis of two contemporary Swedish examples: the actresses Lena Endre in the role of Lady Macbeth at the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm in a production of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth from 2006, and Mia Skäringer in her stage show Horny as Hell and Really Holy from 2010. In exploring this material, a combination of Paul Ricoeur’s “hermeneutics of suspicion” and Paul Stoller’s ”sensuous scholarship” is applied.

A synthetic theoretical approach is employed that is set on a phenomenological foundation in combination with theories of emotion and affect as well as gender theory and theatre theory. The discussion is informed by Michael Polanyi to gain an understanding of tacit knowledge and the role of kinesthesia; by Simone de Beauvoir to establish a perspective on the body as a situation; by Sara Ahmed to see the potential for a cultural politics of emotion and a queer view of intentionality; and by Maurice Merleau-Ponty to propose a way of looking at the human being as being of the world as opposed to in the world. Interpretations of a few of Gilles Deleuze’s and Félix Guattari’s concepts such as rhizome, becoming, and body without organs, are added to this list in order to provide a background for what the third way of doing emotion is about.

    Abstract [en]

In 1835 the famous Danish storyteller HC Andersen wrote a story that he named The Princess and the Pea (Prinsessen på ærten), and that sometimes is translated into The Real Princess. Regardless of whom the title is featuring the story itself is not directly about a princess, but first and foremost about a prince. It is about a prince who is looking to marry a real princess – and as such a typical example of how easy a princess, a woman, can be sidestepped and turned into an “other”, as Simone de Beauvoir put it in The Second Sex

    Abstract [en]

Imagine that you have two options of comparing THE MODERN actor, either to an airplane, or to a perfume-bottle.1Where the airplane is a symbol of rationality, enlightenment, science, efficiency and reason. And where the perfume-bottle is a symbol of desire, longing, craving, affect, dreams, appearance and surface. The modern actor as either a fast and fierce airplane, or, a nice smelling, nice looking perfume bottle!

1Not to make things unnecessary complicated, having in mind the debate of the origins of modernism, I date the breakthrough of modern acting to the first half of the 1900, to first and foremost Stanislavski, but also to some of his contemporaries.

    Abstract [en]

“The Animation Manual” started off with the idea of trying to tie together our own art practice with a workshop in animation.

We travelled to Hué in Vietnam to work together with students and teachers at Hué College of Fine Arts. By placing our self in a different cultural context and collecting material that could become a base of a manual we wanted to explore the process and document the experiences we encountered in this meeting.

On gender and the ideology of the celebration of Christmas in Swedish art turn of the century 1900: Elsa Beskow, Carl Larsson and Jenny Nyström

Contemporary art is not depicting the Christmas celebration in the same way as during the turn of the century 1900. In Sweden artists as Elsa Beskow, Carl Larsson and Jenny Nyström made illustrations of Christmas that also became part of the celebration itself, through then new media such as Christmas cards and illustrated magazines. It was a modern, urban, middle-class audience that consumed the images, but the motifs were looking back to a rural past. Christmas turned both patriarchal in connecting the family father with Christmas presents, foods and material richness. It also turned nationalistic when a Swedish version of the Santa Clause was invented from the traditional ”tomte” (gnome) who originally was guarding and working at the farms. Especially in the work of Nyström the images of Christmas celebrations was both connected to a presumed historical past as well as a modern future. References to pagan past, present Christianity and modern lifestyles collaborates in making a typically Swedish Christmas. Even more interesting, these century-old images are still part of Swedish Christmas celebrations. In a time when family constellations are changing and Sweden is turning more multicultural, we hold on to a traditional ideal of how to make a perfect family Christmas. There is a timeless quality in Christmas celebrations and a sense of a global community when we imagine that everybody else in the nation or globally are doing the exact same thing as we do right now. There are few things experienced more normal and working normative than families and home life.

Materiality, rhetoric and emotion in the Pietà: the Virgin Mary in images of piety in 15th century Sweden2016Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of History, ISSN 0346-8755, E-ISSN 1502-7716, Vol. 41, nr 3, s. 271-288Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This study focuses on the representation of materiality on wall paintings, as depicted objects functioned as triggers of emotion to convey meaning in images. In medieval aesthetics images were made to engage all the senses in the spectator so as to create a truthful experience. The material perspective combines well with medieval rhetoric in understanding this process, particularly the concepts of ekphrasis, enargeia and ductus. By doing close readings of images, and identifying materials, figures, objects, gestures and so on, in the same manner as one can close read texts, narratives of the images can be discovered. It is also a reading that helps in identifying emotive expressions and rhetorical gestures that together with material aspects of images and texts also help in identifying gender-related contents. During the 15th century the Pietà (the mourning Virgin Mary holding her dead son) was introduced in Sweden. The image is key in understanding the Marian cult as it was established alongside the expanding devotion to the Virgin in the Nordic countries. By fusing the material aspect and rhetoric in a close reading of the motif that focuses on gender and emotion this study aims to find alternative paths in analysing medieval art.

    Abstract [en]

The Pietà was introduced in Swedish medieval art during the late fourteenth century and this article is focussing on its expressions of grief and death. The popularity of the Pietà can be explained by the historical context (the Black Death and the Hundred Years War), hard times that made death and despair extremely present, connected to sin, and a common experience for all no matter of social hierarchies. Virgin Mary is a vital part in the Pietà as she is both an intercessor for humans who wants forgiveness for their sins and the voice of her son’s message since he can speak no more. It is through her story, experience and grief that humans can both understand and find the merciful love Christ has promised after death that will guarantee eternal life in Heaven

Rummet som konstverk: om konstnärsparet Charles Rennie Mackintosh och Margaret Macdonald2003Doktorsavhandling, monografi (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

The present dissertation deals with the artistic collaboration of a married couple, Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Margaret Macdonald. Living in Glasgow at the turn of the century, theeå, Swedeny concentrated their work on interior design. However, artistic collaboration has been neglected by traditional art history, with its concentration on individual creativity. For the couple in question, this has meant that the work they created together has been mainly attributed to Mackintosh, thereby relegating Macdonald to the role of spouse and assistant, rather than co-creator. The present dissertation presents a different picture of the couple's collaboration, challenging and revising our cultural perceptions about the creative abilities of the respective sexes.

A selection of interiors created by the Mackintoshes is studied in order to shed light on their collaborative efforts. The analyses embark from the perspectives of «masculine» and «feminine» in order to show how the Mackintoshes created artistic wholeness in their interiors, while at the same time opening up the spaces for a mixture of actors, i.e. making the rooms accessible to men and women alike through their designs. During this epoch, the concepts of «masculine» and «feminine» were employed as natural points of reference in an attempt to explain social and cultural phenomena scientifically. The Mackintoshes made use of the era's conventions when creating interiors in the accepted division of masculine (hallways, dining rooms, libraries) and feminine (bedrooms, salons) spaces. However, with time they began to combine these accepted gender forms in order to create something new and modern. Just as the Mackintoshes could create more powerful works of art by combining their respective artistic talents, their spaces could accrue greater significance through the combination of masculine and feminine principles.
