Trapped in Facebook: A grounded theory exploration2016Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Facebook is the biggest social network and therefore it is of interest to view how people get immersed into the user experience of it. Not much has been done about immersion into Facebook and how it entraps the user in a never-ending flow of impressions. Using a combination of qualitative interview studies and think-aloud walkthroughs we set out to study this phenomena. We found a varying mix of immersion, from those who couldn’t stop looking through their feeds to those who just used Facebook as a phonebook. We also found that while many wanted to reduce their usage of Facebook, none seemed able to make that plunge. From this we find design implications for both designing for immersion and avoiding entrapment. One key to the former is to have an error free environment, while the latter would be to make sure that all information is searchable.

    Abstract [en]

Organisations and projects use CSCW/Groupware systems for collaboration purposes. These systems and applications are in many cases using a non-transparent GUI, witch is also hard to learn. This paper present a novel system that aims towards being transparent and easy to use. This system, called CollMX, will be evaluated and different ideas for future development will be presented.  The evaluation and ideas are generated by an empiric evaluation and research in different areas related to CSCW. The research does not only focus on the area of CSCW, but also extends towards the Web 2.0 and ideas about awareness.

Supporting coordination of everyday project: Evaluation and design of Tabula2010Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 15 poäng / 22,5 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This paper argues that currently there is a lack of powerful and easy to use, coordination support systems designed for non-professional users. To address this problem this paper proposes a novel approach to the coordination of projects. The approach is based on integrating minimalist task workspaces in web-based Task/Participant tables. The paper presents a further design of Tabula, a web-based coordination system that implements this approach. The concept and prototype of Tabula was explored in two user studies employing the focus group method. The groups included subjects that were active, respectively, Master students in HCI and high-school teachers. The results of the focus group will be presented and discussed. The improved version of Tabula implements novel interface- and coordination functionality as well as an alternative e-mail based interface.

Non-technical users’ first encounters with a robotic telepresence technology: An empirical study of office workers2018Ingår i: Paladyn - Journal of Behavioral Robotics, ISSN 2080-9778, E-ISSN 2081-4836, Vol. 9, nr 1, s. 307-322Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Robotic telepresence technologies are becoming ever more usable and affordable, as well as increasingly available as consumer products. In the coming years, a significant number of people are likely to encounter the technology for the first time, and many, if not most, of them are going to be “non-technical” users, that is, people who do not have special technical knowledge and skills of IT-professionals. Therefore, understanding how nontechnical users are getting familiar with robotic telepresence technology, how they perceive the technology, learn to control it, and relate it to their everyday work practices, is a topical research issue. This paper reports an empirical study, in which eight non-technical users, office workers who were not IT-professionals, were introduced to robotic telepresence and provided with a practical experience of acting as pilots of a remotely controlled robot. In follow up interviews the participants were asked to reflect on potential uses of the technology in their professional activities. The participants could successfully acquire basic navigation skills and reached a high level of spatial presence, but experienced problems with developing a "new body image”. When reflecting on the potential of the technology for supporting their work, the participants envisioned a number of benefits associated with remote physical mobility. The impact of the technology on the quality of workrelated social interactions was expected to be generally positive but somewhat limited.

Employing the secondary task technique for measuring MRP pilots' cognitive load2018Ingår i: Proceedings of the 10th Nordic Conference on Human-Computer Interaction, ACM Press, 2018, s. 706-710Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Mobile Remote Presence (MRP) technologies make it possible for the user to be mobile in a remote environment, which opens up new possibilities for interaction. However, this new functionality comes at a cost. The need for MRP system users to pay attention to both telecommunication and device navigation increases their cognitive load. Assessing the cognitive load of MRP system users is a timely research issue, which is addressed in this paper both conceptually and empirically. We argue that Secondary Task (ST) techniques have certain advantages over existing Subjective Rating Scales (SRS) instruments, and report a study, in which a particular ST technique, a visual monitoring task, was employed to assess MRP pilot’s cognitive load. The empirical evidence from the study indicates that the method provides additional valuable insights into MRP pilots’ user experience.

Focus Group Foci: employing Participants' HCI and Application Domain Expertise in Interaction Design2015Ingår i: New Contributions in Information Systems and Technologies / [ed] Alvaro Rocha, Ana Maria Correia, Sandor Costanzo, Luis Paulo Reis, Springer Publishing Company, 2015, Vol. 353, s. 1057-1063Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The paper reports a study in which two aspects of interaction design - human interaction with technology and acting through technology were analyzed in the context of participatory sessions having the focus group format. The sessions were conducted as a part of redesigning a novel digital artifact, a web-based project management tool. An initial prototype of the artifact was introduced to two different groups of participants possessing expertise in, respectively, human-computer interaction (HCI) and teaching and learning, a key target application domain for the tool. Re-design suggestions provided by each of the focus groups were found to address issues with both user interface and functionality of the prototype. The main difference between the groups was in whether they primarily focused on interaction efficiency or artifact's integration into a larger social and technological context. Implications of the study for further development of participatory methods in interaction design are discussed.

Probing the design space of a telepresence robot gesture arm with low fidelity prototypes2017Ingår i: HRI '17 Proceedings of the 2017 ACM/IEEE International Conference on Human-Robot Interaction, ACM Digital Library, 2017, , s. 494s. 352-360Kapitel i bok, del av antologi (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The general problem addressed in this paper is supporting a more efficient communication between remote users, who control telepresence robots, and people in the local setting. The design of most telepresence robots does not allow them to perform gestures. Given the key role of pointing in human communication, exploring design solutions for providing telepresence robots with deictic gesturing capabilities is, arguably, a timely research issue for Human-Robot Interaction. To address this issue, we conducted an empirical study, in which a set of low fidelity prototypes, illustrating various designs of a robot's gesture arm, were assessed by the participants (N=18). The study employed a mixed-method approach, a combination of a controlled experiment, elicitation study, and design provocation. The evidence collected in the study reveals participants' assessment of the designs, used in the study, and provides insights into parti.cipants' attitudes and expectations regarding gestural communication with telepresence robots in general.

    Abstract [en]

We all have a personal brand, even if we are not aware of it. What we choose to work with and our hobbies define how we are perceived. Social media is a platform that allows us to become whoever we want. And we can attract a large amount of followers with the correct strategies. This essay is conducted through a qualitative study with the purpose to investigate the strategies behind successful profiles on instagram. We used semi-structured interviews to answer our question formulations: What strategies are used? How are the strategies used? What are the reasons behind the initiative? And how is the relationship to the followers?

The study shows that a majority of the strategies on instagram require networking. The profiles help each other to grow by taking part in “likegroups” and through the “shoutout for shoutout” technique. We also found that the interactive users can have a large influence over the content.

    Abstract [en]

The use of mobile devices has during the last years expanded and on the market you can see a huge amount of applications. The development of mobile applications differs from traditional systems development since mobility infers that mobile applications can be used in different technological and social contexts. Although previous research has recognized that mobility can present mobile application developers with certain challenges, empirical studies of how problems arise and how they can be handled has thus far been limited. In this study we focused on the requirements engineering process from a development view with the purpose of finding challenges emerging in the development process. The study is based on a qualitative case study that employed semi-structured interviews with both project managers and system developers active in the requirements process. The data gathering included seven participants from five different companies. The results of the study showed that there is a huge lack in methodology usage when developing mobile applications. Most of the requirements were focused on technical issues with developing mobile applications. It was hard to take into account the user needs since they were hard to anticipate. The respondents felt that the relationship with the customer was most important when developing, nor was it important to identify the end users. The developers often expressed that customers lacked sufficient knowledge, and that the customer had not had time to mature when it comes to mobile application development. In the study we concluded that developers need to direct more attention towards finding the end users, identify their needs, and more work towards developing a methodology that focuses on that.

Point or click?: Evaluating two input modalities for mobile games2007Ingår i: Proceedings of the Second International Conference on Internet and Web Applications and Services, 2007Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Previous research in computer games have focused on user experience from the perspectives of game content, graphics, interactivity and underling game story while missing to address the effect of a certain input modality on the user experience. In this paper we report from two user studies that focus on players' experience and performance in relation to the use of two different input modalities for the same game and whether it changes the flow and gameplay in any way. The overall research was according to this whether a game can be more fun to play with a certain input modality? The paper presents the results from these studies and draws conclusions based on these data in relation to computer games and user experiences in the context of mobile game playing.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In this thesis we present the procedures and outcomes of adopting two roles in a study: the role of a researcher and the role of a designer. The subject is crossmedia design. Crossmedia is a growing and changing trend for media producers of today its design is of great importance. The purpose is to create a concept from scratch that stands out from the crowd and engage people with the use of cross media as the approach. We also aim to investigate if a cross media designer can rely on previous research made within this subject or if the scene has changed.

In order to test and to fully understand the process of the subject, we designed a crossmedia concept, based upon previous and related research. We employ a qualitative and exploratory approach informed by recent developments in action design research. We will then review our results by analysing which medium, digital or analogue, was the most successful and how the audience and the general media embraced the concept.

    Abstract [en]

When talking about how to present information in virtual reality, the possibilities are countless, but there are also many problems surrounding the spatial location of the information. This study aims to examine where and how the instructions in a vehicle training simulator should be presented in a future implementation of the interface in virtual reality. To find this out, a gameplay was created in which four different placements of the instructions were made. Three options were based on earlier studies made by Smith (2015) and Jose (2016) and the fourth was based on the existing information in the vehicle training simulator. These gameplays were presented as a movie to a number of interviewees and followed up by questions after each movie. The interviewees were asked to give the movies three ratings from 1-5, valuing how they perceived the presentation of the instructions. To get further opinions, comments was collected from the interviewees throughout each session. In this two ways, we got answers to which of the four options the interviewees thought was best. The study showed that there were two options that stood out among the others and both were based on the concept of a head-up display, also known as a HUD. One was represented in the bottom of the windshield and the other one in the top. The result of which one of them who were perceived as best is too close to say, although the study is considered to have reached its goal, which was to help the developers on their way to a decision that will eventually be implemented.

    Abstract [en]

The study of the natural environment and the acknowledged effects of the global warming has come to affect other disciplines including the field of IS research. A sustainable future cannot afford the continuing of our unsustainable behaviors. The organization and the behaviors of its employees are reproducers of the unsustainable society and with this knowledge comes responsibility. A growing interest to be a part of the sustainable development has thus influenced the organizations way of manufacturing goods and transform processes with the motive of making them more efficient and “greener”. This leads to the growing interest of the opportunity of implementing IS as a contributing factor of the transformations process. This essay studies the digital tool for communication and its’ promoting influence on the transformation process toward a sustainable IT-consulting business. The study acknowledges social contextual factors and organization structures that may challenge the effectiveness of the digital tool. The empirical findings are viewed through the lens of organizational learning and thus contribute to the field of IS research with a new perspective on the impact of IT in the transformations process.

Digitalization is the collective concept of differing and interrelated phenomena which are rearranging traditional market conditions and causing a turbulent and competitive environment. In response to these impacts, organizations seek organizational change through digital transformation. IS researchers has contributed with limited findings of digital transformation within the public sector healthcare. This thesis investigates organizational response towards digitalization and conditions of digital transformation through a case study within public sector healthcare in Sweden. The study successfully identifies external tensions of digitalization which underlie the reorganization and internal tensions which motivates progress towards digital transformation.

Effektiv kravställning i små organisationer: En experimentell fallstudie i en liten organisation2017Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Incorrect requirements have long been considered to be one of the biggest reasons for failed IT projects. Insufficient requirements are also one of the most expensive sources of error. This is especially problematic within small enterprises, which in nature are time and cost sensitive. The purpose of this experimental case study is to identify efficient requirements gathering activities and by extension an efficient requirements gatherings process for small enterprises by utilizing their unique prerequisites. We gathered data through the execution of five user-centered requirements gathering activities on a small organization. The result of these activities, our observations and a survey were analyzed in order to draw conclusions regarding the success and efficiency of the activities and process as a whole. The results show that by utilizing the prerequisites of small organizations through the use of user-centered activities an efficient requirements gathering process can be accomplished. The results also show that the prerequisites of small organizations combined with the impact of external consultants with the purpose of problematizing the operational procedures contributes to other organizational benefits than the requirements documentation.

    Abstract [en]

Many people today have no idea that film editing is more than simply putting scenes together. Previous research also reveals very limited information about the editors line of thinking, the creative decision making, intuition and how they reflect upon their own profession. The purpose of this essay is to explore the film editors meaningful role in productions of moving image. We look at editors competence and characteristics and try to break down the hidden, magical touch they contribute with in an attempt to uncover the implicit and tacit knowledge they carry. Further we investigate what the differences between branches in the industry means for the editors. Six semistructured interviews were conducted with editors in the fields of television, motion picture and commercials. The findings indicate that the key elements of editing is creating narrative clarity and dramatic emphasis. Editing is also closely intertwined with music since it has similarities both in creation process and shape. The result shows that editors have profound understanding of film theory but use it only subconsciously. Instead intuition and experience-derived knowledge replaces theory. The result was applied on theories of intuition and experience after an empirical analysis in the hope of explaining what is demanded by the editor and how they develop their competence. Our study also highlight the need for more research in the field of editing.

    Abstract [en]

Social media has revolutionized how people communicate with eachother. It’s been used by a lot of people in the world and people sharing everything from pictures, videos and information. Personal information has become the new economic value, where authorities and companies can sell it to third party. The aim of the study has focused on how students perceive their own use with regard to privacy on social media and what they feel about privacy settings. To answer these questions data collection has been conducted through qualitative interviews where the participants explain how they use social media. The intreviews has been developed by three themes in this study and are presented as, thoughts on their own use, their relations to privacy settings and sharing standards. Furthermore the interviews has been analyzed and discussed. Accordingly to some of the students, they are aware when sharing personal information on social media, but they do not understand the consequences by sharing that information.

More importantly some of the participants are not aware of the privacy settings, its purpose or its function. With or without the privacy settings, information can still be collected. This is something the students does not seem to be aware of or concerned about. Furthermore students are both aware and unaware of the information they share, while claiming it is up to each individual to decide what is okay to post on social media and that they are concered about relinquish information.

    Abstract [en]

Many  companies  are  struggling  to  navigate  in  the  rapidly  changing  environment  and uncertain time of the digital era. Previous research has been exploring the ongoing trend of digital transformation, as well as digital business strategies, but still there is little guidance for  practitioners  in  terms  of  concrete  frameworks  and  concepts  for  digital  business strategizing.  This  thesis  investigates  critical  factors  of  digital  business  strategizing  and contributes  by  developing  a  maturity  model  for  digital  business  strategizing.  The contribution  of  this  study  is  two  folded,  on  the  one  hand  it  provides  practitioners  a conceptual  artefact  in  order  to  analyze  their  challenges  in  the  new  landscape  of  digital transformation and on the other it gives valuable insights for researchers on the new rising phenomena of digital business strategies.

    Abstract [en]

The popularity of video games has been boosted by the rise of user-generated live streaming platforms, and the biggest of them all is Twitch. The popularity depends on Twitch alignment of live streamed video games. The stream is created by a player who broadcast and streams the video game online. The video game can then be watched by a viewer that is interested in the video game. In every stream there is an implemented live chat that allows the viewer to interact with the streamer while the stream is online. Because of this new type of interaction within live streaming, community’s starts to form around the streamer which connects people with the same interests. Because of the increasing popularity on Twitch and user-generated live streaming we have recognized a problem to maintain the social interaction between the users within a streams community. A qualitative study has been applied to analyze both the viewer and streamers perspective on the importance of social interaction on Twitch, as well as the effect that growing communities has on the social interaction.

    Abstract [en]

In the twenty-first century, we are literally surrounded by digital things and things that turn out to be digital – or have some digital parts or are parts of a larger system in which there are digital elements. We carry around mobile phones and watches; many also have additional music players, PDAs or PCs. We live in houses filled with digital networks and artefacts; we depend on infrastructures that are partly digital and have digital systems attached to them; we use public and private services that are digital, are based on digital infrastructures and have other digital systems attached to them; and we experience embedded, ubiquitous computing as we live in digitally enhanced environments that support our activities with or without our conscious control. The digital layer(s) in the world constitute a real world.

Developing integrated solution offerings for remote diagnostics: a comparative case study of two manufacturers2009Ingår i: International Journal of Operations & Production Management, ISSN 0144-3577, E-ISSN 1758-6593, Vol. 29, nr 5, s. 539-560Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose – This paper analyzes two manufacturing firms entering condition based maintenance business reveals the complex nature of establishing integrated solutions. Existing literature on integrated solutions is contrasted critically against empirical findings. Design/methodology/approach – Descriptive, comparative case study focuses on solution offerings in two different companies. The data consist of 57 thematic interviews of both manufacturer and customer representatives and company documents. Findings – In integrated solutions, value is created incrementally through the customer-provider co-production process. Building integrated solutions business requires managing the interdependence of the solution components – both within the provider company and the offering, and between the provider and the client – to enable this collaborative process. Research limitations/implications – The case studies were first conducted separately and later compared. However, despite some minor differences in case methodologies, no problems were encountered in the comparative analysis of the data sets. Originality/value – The paper departs from the canons of earlier literature as it proposes a revised definition for integrated solution offerings; it emphasizes balanced amalgamation of multiple perspectives instead of just replacing the old ones; it questions the view of solutions development as a straight-forward implementation process; and it switches perspective from the manufacturer to the business of the client as the main system.

    Abstract [en]

Distributed system development is a common occurrence in today’s technological and global world. Because the consequences of its geographically distributed nature it creates barriers between people that affects their communication and collaboration efforts in the distributed context. Despite a lot of technological breakthroughs over the last decades and the occurrence of video-conference applications and other tools for communication and collaboration, cultural and geographical issues have so far not yet been completely resolved. In this study I have made a literature study over distributed system development to form a set of central factors that affects the distributed development process. With these factors in hand, I have made another literature study to compare how these factors are affected within the use of 3D collaborative virtual environments, which is a mixture of virtual reality (VR) and computer supported cooperative work (CSCW). I wanted to study what the opportunities and/or challenges were within using 3D CVEs in a distributed system development context. My findings are that although the technology might be ready to handle such an occurrence, there are still obstacles to really involve it in the already complex context of distributed work. However, there are still some uses within team-building and creation of social ties that could benefit from the 3D CVE technology, and there is a possibility to use this technology within some design phases during a system development project process.
