    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

"Ingen välkomnade och sa hej, följ med mig"-Introduktion av nyanställda ungdomsjobbare inom särskilt boende: “Nobody welcomed and said hello, come with me” -Introduction of newly employed youth in elderly care2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Förberedda föräldrar ger trygga barn?: En undersökande fallstudie av två föräldrautbildningar under graviditet2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Unaccompanied children seeking asylum arrive to Sweden every day. Many of the children have experienced trauma and are sometimes suffering from PTSD, anxiety or other psychiatric symptoms. These children are sometimes being placed in ordinary families but mostly they stay at residential care homes for children and young persons. In this essay we are interested in the staff at these homes. We wanted to find out how they experienced their work and how they coped with difficult situations. Through interviews we talked with four social workers, working at residential care homes in different municipalities in the north of Sweden. During the interviews the staff explained how they felt about their work, both the positive and the negative sides. Further results show that the staff uses coping strategies. They told us that especially exercise, talking to co-workers and rest is essential to do a good work.

    Abstract [en]

As part of a larger research project, we interviewed ten parents with refugee backgrounds about their experiences of contact with child welfare services in Norway. Despite parents describing both positive and negative experiences, and trust as well as distrust, we found that fear of the child welfare services was a central theme. Thematic analyses showed that fear of the child welfare services was not primarily related to the interviewees' own negative experiences, but to a variety of perceptions or representations of the child welfare services that informants described as common or prevalent among people from ethnic minorities in general. We found that the representations of the child welfare services could be categorized into the following themes: 1) child welfare services primarily take children away from parents, 2) child welfare services do not go into dialogue with parents, and 3) child welfare services discriminate against ethnic minority families. The analysis is discussed critically in light of Axel Honneth and Nancy Fraser's understandings of recognition and social justice. We suggest that the parents’ fear of the child welfare services can be understood as fear of experiencing humiliation and disrespect through contact with child welfare services; fear of losing their children, becoming invisible and being discriminated against. A key implication of the study is the need for further research that examines the fear of child welfare among people from ethnic minorities, as well as measures that address distrust of services in parts of the population.

Negotiating deficiency: exploring ethnic minority parents' narratives about encountering child welfare services in Norway2018In: Child & Family Social Work, ISSN 1356-7500, E-ISSN 1365-2206, Vol. 23, no 2, p. 196-203Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Evaluating the participatory opportunities for service users within social welfare institutions is a pressing issue. In this article, we explore a group of ethnic minority parents' experiences with child welfare services (CWS) in Norway. A strong narrative theme was deficiency positioning—how lacking a Norwegian normative set of knowledge and skills challenged the parents' opportunities to participate. We analysed how deficiency positioning was perceived, negotiated, and contested in the parents' accounts, and 4 themes emerged: (a) learning to parent, (b) contesting expert knowledge, (c) learning to be a client, and (d) constructing CWS deficiency. Nancy Fraser's concept of “participatory parity” was applied to explore how current institutional structures may enable and limit parents' participation. The analysis provides insight into agencies and informants' sense-making processes as well as the diverse resources and strategies that parents draw upon in the CWS encounter. Furthermore, we argue that an interplay between a strong focus on “parenting skills” and bureaucratic and economic structures positions ethnic minority parents as deficient, thus providing powerful mechanisms for marginalization. Implications for case work and institutional levels are discussed.

Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In recent years, researchers have paid increasing attention to the issue of care in the new types of family and partner relationships. The aim of this study is to examine expectations and attitudes concerning care among elderly people in LAT (Living Apart Together)- relationships in Sweden, that is, people who have a long-term intimate relationship, but who do not share a common home. Questionnaires were completed by 116 elderly people in LAT-relationships. Partners are ranked as the main providers of care, especially by men, but there is considerable variation in the answers. This seems to be principally related to the degree of flexibility in this type of relationship. Some individuals see a LAT-relationship as a marriage-like relationship, while others see it primarily as a type of relationship that guarantees them the possibility of maintaining their own independent way of life.

Sexuella trakasserier: En kvalitativ studie om hur personal på Umeå universitet arbetar med frågor kring sexuella trakasserier2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Contemporary family life and intimate relationships today are characterised by increasing heterogeneity. In the growing body of research on this differentiation, the role of the elderly people has largely been ignored. But to an increasing extent the "young old" (65-74 years of age), in particular, are active participants in the process of the differentiation of intimate relationships. One of the least researched contributions of the elderly to the restructuring of contemporary intimate relationships is the establishment of lastint intimate relationships that do not include a mutual home, i.e. an alternative to marriage or other forms of cohabition. This type of relationship is referred to as Living Apart Together (henceforth LAT-relationships. In Swedish: särboende). The aim of this thesis is to examine LAT-relationships among elderly heterosexual individuals in Sweden, focusing in particular on the influence of this type of relationship on commitments, intimacy and autonomy. A major dilemma is the question of who should provide the care and service that ageing often demands. A pluralistic methodological approach has been adopted in the four differnt papers in this thesis, whick includes the use of a qualitative pilot study, a broad quantitative questionnaire study, a qualitative interview study and finally a qualitative study with a lifestory perspective.

    Abstract [en]

The aims were to describe Swedish social work students’ personality characteristicsupon entry to their training and to analyze relationships between personality traits, mental health, and some sociodemographic variables. One hundred and twenty-onefemale social work students completed a sociodemographic form, the Temperamentand Character Inventory, and the Symptom Checklist. They scored significantly higheron harm avoidance, reward dependence, and self-transcendence and reported moresomatization, obsessive compulsive, and phobic-anxious symptoms, and less hostility, than Swedish individuals from the general population of the same age. Personalitytraits significantly predicted the various mental symptom scores. It is recommended toimplement modules or training courses within social work training in Sweden that bring an improvement of self-directedness and cooperativeness character trait intofocus.

Using player questionnaires (72 women, 42 men) and club staff interviews, this paper provides an analysis of the effect of structural conditions on expectations of support and hindrance. In spite of large structural conditions women and men rated similar levels of support and hindrance. Yet, both women and men believed that the situation in sport was better for men. The adult women’s lower expectations may be an indication of their awareness of their lower status within their sport. When comparisons are made between women and men in sport it is important to consider that gender operates at different levels and may affect conditions as well as expectations

Gender in ice hockey: women in a male territory2008In: Scandinavian Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports, ISSN 0905-7188, E-ISSN 1600-0838, Vol. 18, no 2, p. 235-249Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study investigates how female ice hockey players describe and explain their situation within as well as outside their sport. Information was obtained by semi-structured interviews with female ice hockey players. The results were analyzed in a gender perspective where the main starting point was the concepts of different levels of power relations in society developed by Harding and applied to sports by Kolnes (the symbolic, structural and individual level). The study shows that the players appeared to share the traditional views of men and women. They also described gender differences in terms of financial and structural conditions as well as differences in ice hockey history. Even though the players described structural inequalities, they were quite content with their situation and the differences in conditions were not considered when they explained the gender differences in ice hockey performance. On the individual level the players considered themselves different from other women and appeared to share the traditional views of femininity and masculinity.

It has been suggested that performance of a sport traditionally associated with the other sex might alter the traditional view of men and women, however our results give little support to that suggestion.

”… det är ju en hur normal sak som helst att ha ADHD…”2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Treatment repeaters: re-entry in care for clients with substance use disorder within the Swedish addiction treatment system2017Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

According to the regulations contained in the Social Services Act (SFS 2001:453), Swedish social services have a legal responsibility to provide support, care, and treatment for individuals with substance use problems.  This law mandate those who are responsible to provide treatment to motivate drug users to actively seek treatment on a voluntary basis, ensuring an end to their dependence on drugs. Studies have shown that although the treatment system largely focuses on promoting abstinence, about two-thirds of client’s relapse into substance use within one year after completing treatment. This dissertation focuses broadly on clients who repeatedly enter and use treatment for substance use disorders in the Swedish addiction treatment system. The aim of this thesis is to examine and identify the population groups who are repeated treatment users of the Swedish treatment system for substance use disorder, including both the voluntary treatment and compulsory care. This thesis was based on three national level databases. The results showed that clients with a higher degree of problems and problems in different areas of life also had an increased risk of having treatment for substance use disorder repeatedly. Clients who were older, men, reported more years of polydrug and alcohol use to intoxication, reported more compulsory care episodes for substance use, had ever been charged with crime, had ever been in inpatient mental health treatment, and had a higher ASI mental health symptom composite score, were significantly more likely to report more voluntary addiction treatment episodes. The strongest significant association with the number of treatment episodes was the number of compulsory treatment episodes for alcohol and drugs. Individuals who experienced prior compulsory care including mandatory treatment through LVU (law (1990:52)), been in prison, and had children mandated to out-of-home care, were more likely to have two or more entries in the compulsory care system for substance use disorder. In addition, this analysis showed that 59% of clients mandated to compulsory care dropped-out during their compulsory care episode, and that younger clients were significantly more likely to drop-out. Those who drop-out were significantly more likely to experience negative outcomes, i.e. additional sentence to compulsory care and higher risk of mortality.  A hierarchal logistic regression model also identified that individuals with riskier childhood conditions were more likely to have had repeated entries to compulsory care for substance use disorder. The indirect effects showed that a family history of substance use disorder and psychiatric problems are both associated with higher probability of institutional care as a child i.e. LVU, and that in turn, mandated childhood institutional care is related to repeated compulsory care intakes as an adult. Individuals who use treatment for substance use disorder repeatedly have a higher degree of problems i.e. an exposed and problematic group of individuals characterized by problem in several different areas of life. Growing up in a home environment with unfavorable conditions, mandated care before the age of 18 (LVU), compulsory care for substance use disorder as an adult, children taken into out-of-home care, and crime are the factors that are primarily associated with repeated treatment for substance use. A change in the view of treatment for clients in need of repeated use of treatment seems important, and access to adapted continuous care efforts are crucial to counteract the risk of relapse after a treatment episode of voluntary or compulsory care. Further, it seems important to motivate the client to complete the compulsory care without any deviation, since this seems to have positive effects on their substance use disorder.

Repeated addiction treatment use and compulsory care 2001-20092014In: Institutionsvård i fokus: uppföljningar och registerstudier av klienter i LVM-vård, 2014Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Repeated addiction treatment use and compulsory care 2001-2009.

Repeated addiction treatment use in Sweden: a national register data base study2013Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Objectives: This study examines alcohol and drug treatment utilization among a nationally representative sample of 13, 464 individuals interviewed and assessed for an alcohol and/or drug use disorder in the Swedish welfare system. The aim of this study is to identify and describe specific groups who are treatment repeaters of the Swedish addiction treatment system.

Methodology: Univariate descriptive statistics, chi-square, one-way ANOVA, and correlation methods were used to examine the characteristics associated with history of number of addiction treatment episodes. A linear regression model was developed with variables that were significant at the bivariate level.

Results: On average, the respondents reported 4.3 prior addiction treatment episodes. Results of the study show that those who were older, men, those who reported more years of polydrug and alcohol use to intoxication, who reported more compulsory treatment episodes for narcotics and alcohol, who had ever been charged with crime, who had ever been inpatient mental health treatment, and who reported a more mental health symptoms were significantly more likely to report having a history of engaging in more addiction treatment episodes. The strongest significant association with the number of treatment episodes was the number of compulsory treatment episodes for alcohol and/or for drugs.

Conclusion: Implications include the need to change perspectives about addiction treatment from it being an acute care model to a viewing addiction treatment as a chronic care model. Many individuals have multiple- treatment episodes and need multiple treatment. Further, with respect to effectiveness, overall, the Swedish treatment system responds to need in the meaning that the individuals who need treatment for their addiction also have access to treatment. Swedish addiction treatment policy should reflect a chronic care model rather than an acute care model.

Repeated entries to the Swedish addiction compulsory care system: A national register database study2015In: Evaluation and Program Planning, ISSN 0149-7189, E-ISSN 1873-7870, Vol. 49, p. 163-171Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study identified and described specific client groups who have repeated entries to the Swedish addiction compulsory care system. Specifically, through the use of baseline data from the Swedish government Staten’s Institutions Styrelse (SiS) database, for 2658 individuals who were assessed at their compulsory care intake interview by social workers in the national social welfare system between 2001 and 2009 the study identified the associations between specific predisposing, enabling and need characteristics and repeated addiction compulsory care entries. The logistic regression model identified that individuals whose children have been mandated to the child welfare system, who have experienced prior compulsory care including compulsory treatment through LVU (law (1990:52) with specific provision about care of young people under 18), and those who have been in prison are more likely to have two or more entries in the addiction compulsory care system compared to their counterparts. Individuals who have been mandated to compulsory care for their substance use disorder two or more times have significant multiple complex problems and repeated experiences of institutionalization. These individuals are a group in need of a well-coordinated and integrated system of aftercare services to reduce the likelihood of re-entry into addiction compulsory care.

    Abstract [en]

Asylum seekers are today facing long periods of waiting for notice about their permits. The long periods of waiting can contribute to uncertainty and mental illness which can lead to developing depression. Asylum seekers are not being offered the same services from the municipality as people who have received their resident permit. Non-governmental organisations offer services to asylum seekers, they therefore have an important role in their integration process. The aim of this study was to critically examine the services that non-governmental organisations offer to asylum seekers, with focus on if the staff feel that the need of the asylum seekers is being met, and how this could be understood. The data for this study was collected by means of six interviews with staff from non-governmental organisations, who work with asylum seekers and integration in Umeå municipality. An interpretative phenomenological analysis was used to analyse the data collected and interpreted in relation to previous research and Diaz integration theory.

This study indicates that non-governmental organisations aim to bridge the gap between asylum seekers and locals. This is achieved by creating meeting grounds for this interaction to occur, which is the respondents view on integration. Something that is created together. Social networks were considered to be a foundation which later leads to employment and comfort. This was proven to be an important role for integration. A unique strength with non-governmental organisations was considered to be the feeling of comfort that they bestow. But also, their ability to be creative, flexible and efficient. Systematically reaching out to asylum seekers was found to be a structural problem. Understanding the Swedish systems and the authorities was also considered to be a structural problem. In conclusion, we believe that a more developed cooperation between the civil society and the municipality, with focus on long term services may be needed in order to improve the integration process. But also, to facilitate for asylum seekers to be in contact with authorities and for non-governmental organisations to cooperate better with the municipality. It is difficult to draw a specific conclusion about the effect non-governmental services has for asylum seekers integration, since they offer their services to everyone.

Kuratorers åsikter om legitimation inom hälso- och sjukvård: En kvalitativ studie om vad en kuratorslegitimation kan ha för inverkan på kuratorers arbetsuppgifter, verksamhet och patienter2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This bachelor thesis comprise on a qualitative research study using grounded theory as method. The purpose is to examine factors influencing the jurors judgement in rape cases and conceptions about female victims and male culprit that exists in the swedish justice system, using a gender perspective based on legal science. The study consists thirty-five rape cases carefully analyzed to discover repeated patterns in the data. Furthermore the data was structured using grounded theory to identify important pieces, which finally generated in four categories. Distinctive in our results was the importance of credibility in the legal process. The categories is the narrative of the plaintiff in the verdict, the narrative of the accused in the verdict, substantial factors in the court's judgement of evidence and substantial factors in the court’s judgement of the victim and the accused. The results of the study shows that rape myths in the society influences the jurors judgement in the legal process. Finally the study also shows a justice system of unequal power relationships between the female victim and the male culprit.

Ungdomstorget: samlokaliserad samverkan som stöd för ungdomar i Umeå2012Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This is a qualitative study about unaccompanied refugee’s support that they can get from Social Services and Migration Board. It’s a survey that is made in Skellefteå Kommun by interviewing four professional workers, two at the Social Services and two at the Migration Board. The questions in this study deals with the social support and how age may affect this support. The study highlights the difference to arrive as an unaccompanied youth under the age of 18 years or to be of the legal age as defined in Sweden.

The data in this study is collected by semi-structured interviews and was processed by content-analysis. The theories this study are based on is social support and models for integration. The discussion and analysis is about how age is an important part in a youth’s life and how important it is to get the right age right away. The conclusion is that the Migration board has to find ways to determine age as fast and safe as possible for the kids wellbeing. This study also shows that it is easier to come to Sweden as a kid than as a adult. Another conclusion, based on problems indicated by the Social Services about young individuals having to move around, is that such a phenomenon may create feelings of unsafely among the young ones.

    Abstract [en]

Even though recent decades have seen a clear trend towards organizational specialization within Swedish personal social services (PSS), there is a lack of knowledge about the consequences of this, particularly from a client perspective. The aim of this compilation thesis is to describe and analyse the consequences of organizational specialization for clients with complex needs. The empirical material consists of a survey and an interview study, both addressing clients whose needs can be considered complex since they entail several parallel contacts with different specialized PSS units. Article one is a research review aimed at summarizing and discussing the research on organizational structures in the social services, and these structures' impact on work with clients. The review suggests that, to function adequately, social service organizations need to combine and balance aspects of both specialization and integration. Article two aims to describe and analyse how clients with complex needs perceive and value the service conditions of the organizationally specialized PSS. The main findings are that clients primarily perceive and value their encounters with the specialized PSS negatively, and that they experience several elements of service fragmentation. The aim of article three is to describe and analyse how clients with complex needs account for their handling of service conditions within specialized PSS. A key finding is that clients combine different approaches (categorized as consensus, resignation, fight, and escape) in a balancing act intended to promote their own best interests. Article four aims to describe and analyse how clients with complex needs perceive the conditions for helping relations in a PSS setting marked by organizational specialization. A lack of system trust, the people-processing dimensions of work, and an organizational and professional emphasis on formal organizational structures and boundaries were found to constitute unfavourable conditions. Conversely, the occurrence of individual trust, the people-sustaining and people-changing dimensions of client work, and the boundary-spanning efforts of both informal organizations and individual social workers constituted favourable conditions. The thesis concludes that there seems to be a substantial lack of fit between the logics and features of organizational specialization on one hand, and the complex and interwoven nature of clients’ actual needs and everyday lives on the other. It is also argued that organizational specialization means that the complexity involved in encounters between clients and the PSS is overlooked or obscured. Further research on the structural arrangements and service conditions that surround encounters between clients and the social services is suggested, especially research that adopts a client perspective.

Research in the field of human services has paid limited attention to the consequences of the international development toward organisational specialisation; the consequences for clients have been overlooked in particular. The aim of the article is to describe and analyse the consequences of organizationally specialised personal social services (PSS) in Sweden for clients with complex needs. Findings from a survey and an interview study addressing PSS clients show that clients primarily perceived their encounters with the specialised PSS negatively, and that they experienced several elements of service fragmentation. Implications of the findings are discussed in light of previous research and theory in the area.

The Balancing Act: Clients with complex need on how they handle specialized personal social services in Sweden2016In: SWSD 2016: Program book, Seoul, 2016Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Dealing with specialized social service organizations can be a challenge for clients with complex needs. The organizations may appear confusing and hard to navigate, and there is also a risk of service fragmentation, as such clients often participate simultaneously in an array of interventions. An additional complication to be handled is that these parallel interventions often range from voluntary to more or less involuntary. The presentation provides lessons for social work and social development practice, and will be centered on how clients with complex needs handle service conditions within the specialized personal social services (PSS) in Sweden. Swedish PSS use a distinctly problem-based specialization model where the organization is divided into units working with different social problems, such as substance abuse, monetary benefits or childcare. These structural arrangements are often complemented by function-based specialization, where work with assessments and interventions takes place in separate units

Methods: The presentation draws on findings from a qualitative interview study with PSS clients in Sweden.

Results: A conceptual model of four ideal typical client approaches to the specialized PSS (consensus, resignation, fight and escape) is presented. One key finding is, however, that the clients in the study combined these approaches in a balancing act intended to promote their own best interests in their parallel contacts with different parts of the specialized PSS organization.

Implications for Social Work and Social Development practice: The presentation concludes that future improvements in social services would probably benefit from paying more attention to the structural arrangements that surround encounters between clients and the social services, as well as clients’ valuable first-hand knowledge of social service organizations.

The balancing act: clients with complex needs describe their handling of specialised personal social services in Sweden2017In: British Journal of Social Work, ISSN 0045-3102, E-ISSN 1468-263X, Vol. 47, no 3, p. 611-629Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Dealing with specialised social service organisations can be a challenge for clients with complex needs. These organisations may appear confusing and hard to navigate, and there is also a risk of service fragmentation, as such clients often participate simultaneously in an array of interventions. An additional complication to be handled is that these parallel interventions can range from voluntary to more or less involuntary. The aim of the present article is to describe and analyse how clients with complex needs account for their handling of service conditions within specialised personal social services (PSS), using data from a qualitative interview study with PSS clients in Sweden. A conceptual model is presented, covering four ideal typical client approaches to these specialised services: consensus, resignation, fight and escape. One key finding is that the clients combined these approaches in a balancing act intended to promote their own best interests in their parallel contacts with different parts of the specialised PSS organisation. The article concludes that future improvements in social services could be made by paying more attention to the structural arrangements that surround encounters between clients and the social services, as well as clients’ valuable first-hand knowledge of social service organisations.

Conditions for helping relations in specialized personal social services: – a client perspective on the influence of organizational structure2019In: Nordic Social Work Research, ISSN 2156-857X, E-ISSN 2156-8588, ISSN 2156-8588Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article highlights organizational structure as a factor influencing condi- tions for helping relations. It is based on a survey study and an interview study, both directed at parents in families that have parallel contacts in different parts of Swedish personal social services (PSS). The aim is to describe and analyse conditions for helping relations when clients with complex needs encounter specialized PSS.

Low system trust, people processing dimensions of work, and an organi- zational and a professional emphasis on formal organizational structures and boundaries were found to constitute unfavourable conditions. Conversely, an occurrence of individual trust, people sustaining and people changing dimensions of work, as well as informal organization and individual social workers’ boundary spanning efforts, constituted favourable conditions. The article concludes that greater understanding of how clients are affected by contextual service conditions can give some pointers towards how to gen- erally improve services for vulnerable and disadvantaged populations.

Development- and usability testing of a web-based decision support for users and health professionals in psychiatric services2017In: Psychiatric rehabilitation journal, ISSN 1095-158X, E-ISSN 1559-3126, Vol. 40, no 3, p. 293-302Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Objective: Shared decision making (SMD) related to treatment and rehabilitation is considered a central component in recovery-oriented practice. Although decision aids are regarded as an essential component for successfully implementing SDM, these aids are often lacking within psychiatric services. The aim of this study was to use a participatory design to facilitate the development of a user-generated, web-based decision aid for individuals receiving psychiatric services. The results of this effort as well as the lessons learned during the development and usability processes are reported. Method: The participatory design included 4 iterative cycles of development. Various qualitative methods for data collection were used with potential end users participating as informants in focus group and individual interviews and as usability and pilot testers. Results: Interviewing and testing identified usability problems that then led to refinements and making the subsequent prototypes increasingly user-friendly and relevant. In each phase of the process, feedback from potential end-users provided guidance in developing the formation of the web-based decision aid that strengthens the position of users by integrating access to information regarding alternative supports, interactivity between staff and users, and user preferences as a continual focus in the tool. Conclusions and Implications for Practice: This web-based decision aid has the potential to strengthen service users’ experience of self-efficacy and control as well as provide staff access to user knowledge and preferences. Studies employing participatory models focusing on usability have potential to significantly contribute to the development and implementation of tools that reflect user perspectives.

Shared decision-making in mental health care: a user perspective on decisional needs in community-based services2016In: International Journal of Qualitative Studies on Health and Well-being, ISSN 1748-2623, E-ISSN 1748-2631, Vol. 11, article id 30563Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Shared decision-making (SDM) is an emergent research topic in the field of mental health care and is considered to be a central component of a recovery-oriented system. Despite the evidence suggesting the benefits of this change in the power relationship between users and practitioners, the method has not been widely implemented in clinical practice.

Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate decisional and information needs among users with mental illness as a prerequisite for the development of a decision support tool aimed at supporting SDM in community-based mental health services in Sweden.

Methods: Three semi-structured focus group interviews were conducted with 22 adult users with mental illness. The transcribed interviews were analyzed using a directed content analysis. This method was used to develop an in-depth understanding of the decisional process as well as to validate and conceptually extend Elwyn et al.’s model of SDM.

Results: The model Elwyn et al. have created for SDM in somatic care fits well for mental health services, both in terms of process and content. However, the results also suggest an extension of the model because decisions related to mental illness are often complex and involve a number of life domains. Issues related to social context and individual recovery point to the need for a preparation phase focused on establishing cooperation and mutual understanding as well as a clear follow-up phase that allows for feedback and adjustments to the decision-making process.

Conclusions and Implications for Practice: The current study contributes to a deeper understanding of decisional and information needs among users of community-based mental health services that may reduce barriers to participation in decision-making. The results also shed light on attitudinal, relationship-based, and cognitive factors that are important to consider in adapting SDM in the mental health system.

The Legitimacy of User Knowledge in Decision-Making Processes in Mental Health Care: An Analysis of Epistemic Injustice2019In: Journal of Psychosocial Rehabilitation and Mental Health, ISSN 2198-9834Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The experience-based knowledge of users is considered to provide vital input in shared decision making (SDM). However, mental health service users frequently express having negative experiences from meetings with providers, which are of an epistemic nature (e.g., being ignored or not regarded as credible). This study aimed to explore the barriers involved in legitimizing user knowledge in decision-making processes. Interview data from service users and providers were viewed from a theoretic framework of epistemic injustice. Abductive content analysis was conducted on data collected during a project to develop and implement SDM in mental health services. In describing obstacles to legitimize user knowledge, service users highlighted relational issues: being dependent, often dismissed and choosing to edit their testimonies. Service providers typically described workflow issues, users’ insufficient decision- making competence and users’ vulnerability to stress factors. The findings suggest that greater epistemic justice might be achieved by a SDM process in which the service user is engaged as a full partner in collaboration in various activities related to their care.

Självbestämmande och delaktighet: Hemtjänstpersonalens syn på äldres rätt till självbestämmande och delaktighet enligt den nationella värdegrunden.2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Family-friendly policies and women's wages - is there a trade-off?: Skill investments, occupational segregation and the gender pay gap in Germany, Sweden and the UK2016In: European Societies: The Official Journal of the European Sociological Association, ISSN 1461-6696, E-ISSN 1469-8307, Vol. 18, no 1, p. 91-113Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Recent research has suggested that there is a trade-off between the family-friendliness' of jobs, occupations and welfare states on the one hand and women's relative wages on the other. In particular, the extensive family policies found in Scandinavia are thought to harm highly educated women by affecting occupational segregation and workplace skill development. In this article, we use pooled wage data from the European Social Survey of 2004 and 2010 to examine the mechanisms behind the gender wage gap in Germany, Sweden and the UK and compare the situation of high- and low-skilled employees. Our findings show that the gender wage gap among high-skilled employees in Sweden is larger than in the UK, but not larger than in Germany. Also, segregation and work-related training are no more important in Sweden than in the other countries. Another important finding is that the mechanisms behind the gender wage gap differ between high- and low-skilled employees in ways not predicted by the trade-off argument. In particular, the large unexplained wage gap among high-skilled employees provides new theoretical challenges.

The gender-job satisfaction paradox and the dual-earner society: are women (still) making work-family trade-offs?2018In: Work: A journal of Prevention, Assesment and rehabilitation, ISSN 1051-9815, E-ISSN 1875-9270, Vol. 59, no 4, p. 535-545Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Despite their disadvantaged labour market position, women consistently report higher levels of job satisfaction than men. Researchers have attributed women's higher job satisfaction to their lower expectations, arguing that gender differences will fade away as women's labour market prospects improve. Others, however, argue that women are more contented than men because their jobs satisfy a need for family adaptions.

Objective: In this article, we put the hypotheses of transitions and trade-offs to a strong test, by comparing men and women with comparable human capital investments living in a country where women's employment is strongly supported by policies, practices and social norms.

Methods: The relationship between gender and job satisfaction is analysed with stepwise OLS regressions. The analysis is based on a survey to newly graduated highly educated men and women in five occupations in Sweden (n≈2 450).

Results: First, we show that, after controlling for a range of job characteristics, women report a higher level of job satisfaction than men. Second, although the paradox appears to be surprisingly persistent, it cannot be attributed to work-family trade-offs.

Conclusions: Future research should consider job satisfaction more broadly in the light of gender role socialization and persistent gender inequalities.

    Abstract [en]

When unaccompanied minors arrive in Sweden, the social workers are assigned to evaluate the minor’s needs. In order to put the need of the children first during an inquest, BBiC “The child’s need in center” is used. Thou there are no guidelines how to work directly with the unaccompanied minors during the inquest in BBiC. BBiC was created exclusively from a study of children with their parents present. As a result the social workers have to create their own way to use BBiC in their work to be able to use it. The focus in this study lies upon how the social workers use BBiC in their work with unaccompanied minors and what they think of it. The method that is used are qualitative interviews, five social workers that work directly with unaccompanied children in Västernorrlands län in Sweden have been interviewed. The study shows that BBiC is a relatively good support in their work through the questions that the social workers use, though improvements need to be made. As it is now all the social workers do their work as they see fit because they have nothing to guide them. The social workers have all different routines in how to do their work. The risk that has been seen is that what kind of help the minors get depends on the social worker. The help the minors receive are not guaranteed to be the best for the child, and the risk of that is that the child does not get the support it needs.

En känsla av sammanhang: Att leva i Sverige som ensamkommande flyktingbarn2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]
