    Abstract [en]

This study aims to examine the usage of digital software in the English education in Swedish schools. The main purpose of the study is to answer the questions of what type of software is most commonly used, how this software is used to help promote vocal skills, and what the pros of using digital software instead of traditional education materials such as textbooks are. Data is collected through an opinion poll, and the results of the opinion poll are analyzed through thematic analysis. The conclusion of the study is that digital, digital software most commonly found online and used in everyday life, is most often used in conjunction with listening activities to improve the student’s vocal skills, albeit not a very popular choice by teachers. The study also found that the pros to using digital software instead of traditional educational materials are most prominently pronounced through the reduced workload on the teachers, as well as the increased structure, variation, motivation and enjoyment provided for the students.

Formulaic time buyers for young foreign language learners2022In: Language Teaching for Young Learners, ISSN 2589-2053, Vol. 4, no 1, p. 66-91Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Multiword units of language, known as formulaic sequences, are pervasive and essential in communication (Wray, 2008). Although issues related to formulaicity have been under investigation in a number of research studies (e.g. Conklin & Schmitt, 2008; Wood, 2006), the present study is different in investigating the functions of formulaic sequences in the oral language production of young learners in the context of English as a foreign language. A class of 11 students (aged 9 to 11) was observed and video recorded for 16 sessions (90 minutes per session). Following transcription of selected speech samples, formulaic sequences were identified based on pre-established criteria. Analysis enabled categorisation of a range of functions for formulaic sequences in learners’ oral language production. Results revealed evidence that formulaic sequences performed a variety of roles in the learners’ language production. These sequences helped young language learners to improve their fluency, to economize effort on processing and also to buy time for processing. A significant novel finding of this study was evidence that language users might introduce dis-fluency in the production of their sequences in order to buy time for further processing.

The Dynamics of Foreign Language Values in Sweden: A Social History: [Dinamika vrednot tujih jezikov na Švedskem: socialna zgodovina]2022In: Center for Educational Policy Studies Journal (C·E·P·S Journal), ISSN 1855-9719, E-ISSN 2232-2647, Vol. 12, no 1, p. 125-146Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper gives an account of the history of foreign language values in Sweden from the seventeenth century to the present. The paper is informed by sociocultural standpoints on language and language learning according to which language is a dynamic tool that is appropriated by individuals to achieve particular purposes, and that dialogically creates and renews our social world(s). Since the sixteenth century, three languages (German, French and English) have been taught in Sweden as foreign languages during particular eras. In this paper, we explore how language value can be understood as a system that evolves over time as a result of triggers such as power, trade and personal benefits. The impact of these variables on Swedish society’s efforts to invest in learning a particular language during specific eras is critically examined from the perspectives of nested systems.

Bättre ett kulturhus vid hamnen än tio byar i skogen?: En analys av texter från Umeå kommun med avseende på framställningen av landsbygd och stad2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Amílcar osorio y vana stanza: autotra-ducción y traducción intersemiótica en la poesía Colombiana: [Autotranslation and intersemiotic translation in Colombian poetry]2023In: Estudios de Literatura Colombiana, ISSN 0123-4412, no 52, p. 21-46Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article deals with 121 exercises in self-trans-lation by the Colombian poet Amílcar Osorio, which were found in his personal archive. In these poems, at first sight English translations from his poetry book Vana Stanza, we can actually observe exercises of self-translation, but also in-cursions into concrete and visual poetry. We consider Vana Stanza to be an incomplete work that only partly portrays Os-orio's poetic production. In the archive, we manage to expand on the poet’s experimental explorations in which a dialogue not only between different semiotic systems but also between two languages is evident.

The dynamics of second language learning: a longitudinal and qualitative study of an adult's learning of Swedish2001Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

An often discussed issue in the field of second language learning is the influence and importance of individual differences, IDs, such as motivation, personality, previous learning experiences and learning strategies. It has been claimed that IDs form a complex system in the learner, but little consensus has been reached as regards definitions of constructs or their relative importance. Taking the individual learner as a starting-point, this dissertation attempts to demonstrate the complexity of individual differences in the single learner by adopting an in-depth holistic approach. For this purpose a longitudinal case study was designed to follow the learning process of a young Greek woman's acquisition of Swedish during a ten-month intensive course in Sweden. The study is mainly based on self-report and personal diaries, which have been interpreted and analysed qualitatively.

The learning process is extensively described and changes in, for example, strategy use, life situation and learning progress are illustrated. There are indeed many complex factors which have the potential to influence learning. In this particular case, seven factors are indicated as having had a positive influence: previous language learning experiences (especially as regards learning strategies), long-term motivation, metalinguistic awareness, social contacts with L2 speakers, access to English as a mediating language, access to a strict and intensive Swedish course, and a well-needed learning break in the middle of the studies. Negative factors were largely of an emotional nature, especially a period of liminality which created feelings of not belonging, of being betwixt and between.

It is suggested that IDs form a dynamic variable system in the learner. All the IDs are present in the learner, but they seem to change both in substance over time and in importance for the learner at different times in the learning process. Furthermore, IDs appear to be interconnected in a complex and dynamic way. The results of this study strongly emphasise the importance of both an holistic and a longitudinal approach to IDs in second language learning.

"Ja bare skrivar som e låter": En studie av en grupp Närpesungdomars skriftpraktiker på dialekt med fokus på sms2011Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The thesis studies the literacy practices of a group of young people in Närpes in southern Ostrobothnia, Finland with focus on SMS (Short Message Service), both in Standard Swedish and in dialect, but for the most part written in dialect. The aim of the investigation is to describe this writing as a social marker (young people against adults) and its function as an identity act. In addition the study investigates the orthographic norms and conventions that the young people use in their writing. The material consists of 520 SMS and such material as was collected through inquiries and interviews.

In Närpes, as in many other Finland Swedish dialect areas, the dialect has got widened areas of usage and is well established and accepted in more domains than before. It is used in the new media and is thereby also gaining larger scope in public space. This also applies to writing SMS in dialect.

The theoretical points of departure are taken from sociolinguistics and literacy research. A central concept is the new writing, i.e. writing in electronic media such as e.g. SMS and e-mail, which are somewhere between speech and writing. This has given speech and writing new forms with new preconditions, forms that the new media have “triggered” forth and that the language is adapting itself to.

In the first investigative chapter (Ch. 3) eleven literacy practices divided into five groups are analysed: I electronic literacy practices (SMS, e-mail, chat), II hand-written slips of paper (reminder slips, purchase lists, slips to parents and friends respectively), III picture postcards and letters, IV diaries and V school assignments. The informants participate with one exception, group V, in all literacy practices in dialect to a greater or lesser extent. The second investigative chapter (Ch. 4) accounts for the dialect features, diphthongs and consonant combinations that were concretely investigated in the SMS material.

The young people’s writing in dialect is functional and shows that the dialect is an important identity marker. The lack of shared conventions for spelling is not conceived of as a problem but allows everyone to create their own conventions, which in its turn has resulted in the tolerance level for variations in orthography being high. One group think that they write as it sounds, while another think that they do not follow any rules. The dialect is reserved for everyday matters, while Standard Swedish is used in more formal writing situations. The literacy practice may be the same, but the choice of language variety varies with the aim, content and length.

Welche Grammatik braucht der Mensch?: eine Untersuchung der Grammatikbeschreibungen in Lehrbüchern des Faches Deutsch2009Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

“Nel segno dell’anguilla” : Osservazioni traduttologiche sulla traduzione italiana di “Ålevangeliet” di Patrik Svensson.2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The focus of this thesis is the study of the translation of the cultural-specific elements known as realia from Swedish to Italian based on the theoretical framework of translation studies. Realia are interesting to study due to the fact that they often lack correspondence in the target language and sometimes are even hard to distinguish in a text, hence presenting a challenge for translators. Due to the many specific terms with regards to fishing and to the fact that these fall into the category of the so called specialistic or sectorial languages, a similar examination has been performed on the translation of these terms. The third part of the thesis studies the translation of the quotations from the vast reference material in question and how these have been altered due to the so-called model reader and the two languages’ different origins.

The initial hypothesis was that the Italian translation of the realia would be orientated towards the target culture, referred to as acceptability, whereas the terms related to fishing as well as the quotations were initially presumed being oriented towards the source culture and the Swedish original, also known as adequacy[meaning literally]. One also assumed that the translation of the essay part of the book would possibly tend more towards adequacy rather than acceptability.

The analysis is based on the parallel reading of the Swedish original “Ålevangeliet” written by Patrik Svensson and its Italian translation “Nel segno dell’anguilla” by Monica Corbetta in 2019. Whilst reading the books, the realia were collected, then organised and categorised based on the structure described by (Osimo, 2011, p. 112). The terms related to the categories “fishing” and “fishing eels” were also collected and treated in a similar way to the realia. The theory on translation strategies described by Osimo was adapted and used in order to analyse both the realia and the terms in question. All quotations and references were collected, compared to the reference material and then analysed in a qualitative way and examined for patterns and trends with regards to the translation.

The analysis shows that the translation of both the realia and the terms is orientated in order to accommodate the target culture, opting for an acceptable translation, where acceptable refers to the use of more general terms and words than the source text. The comparison between the autobiographical and essay parts of the book shows a somewhat increased rate in the use of local equivalent words (omologhi locali) in the autobiographical part of the book, although this strategy has been used sparingly.

The study finds that the theme was of equal importance in the Italian translation as well as the choice of vocabulary and linguistic register, although the content of the latter two had been altered in the Italian translation, mainly due to the model reader. The analysis of the translation of the quotations and references outlines the impact caused by the different origins of the languages, where Swedish is part of the Germanic branch and Italian the Romance branch, and their effect on the translation.

The thesis illustrates the importance of insight not only in the language-culture of the source language, but also in any specialistic/sectorial language as the insensitivity thereof could contribute to less fortunate translations of both realia, terms and other words.

Skönlitteratur ett läromedel?: - Sju författare och en litteraturpedagog resonerar om skönlitteraturens betydelse i skolan2013Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The essay concerns the role of fiction in school. The research questions is; what is “readable”, what does the authors think of teacher's task to develop students' literacy skills through fiction and how do the authors think of the teachers' task of using fiction in school. The questions give a basis that describes the role of fiction in school today based on the authors' perspective. We have chosen to use the open surveys as a method. In addition to the questionnaire, we have chosen to interview two authors when requested. The results show that from the authors perspective literature plays an important role in the school. The authors want the teachers to take a bigger responsibility for literature in the school in order to offer the students fiction that is interesting and readable. They also think that by using literature frequently, and by engaging the authors in lesson about fiction the students reading will improve.

En la frontera entre amor y temor: Los boleros como intertexto en Tengo miedo torero de Pedro Lemebel2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [es]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study has been to elucidate the connection between the Individual Education Plan (IEP) and activities in the class room. The study has been performed in an upper secondary class. A case study was performed in order to find out to what extent goals, arrangements and measures conformed to the activities, and what factors affected the IEP work. A review of the IEPs and classroom activities has been done through a three-part survey; observations during 14 classes, interviews with learners and teachers, and reviews of the goals and actions in the IEPs. The results show that the activities in the class rooms are coherent with the goals and actions in the IEPs. The study also shows that neither learners nor teachers were very aware of the details in the IEPs, even though the goals and actions were found in the class room activities. My perception of this, became that the teachers have a good knowledge of assistive support, which benefits the learners, and that participation and information can help develope the work with IEPs.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The thesis consists of the following papers: (1) Tre ortnamn på Spöl-. (Tre Kulturer. 2. Medlemsbokför Johan Nordlander-sällskapet tillägnad minnet av Roland Otterbjörk 1925-1984. Umeå 1985. Skrifter utgivna av Institutionen för nordiska språk vid Umeå universitet. ISSN 0282-7182.)

The chief aim of the thesis is to describe and etymologize the habitative names in the parish of Vännäs in the county of Västerbotten, northern Sweden. The material used consists of place-name forms recorded in the local dialects. The material forms the basis of the author's hypotheses concerning sound changes and morphological changes and the original significance of the various place-names. The hypotheses have been tested by confronting them with historical data concerning the settlement of the area, with linguistic material, with parallel place-names and with topographical data. The purpose of the third paper is to draw further conclusions about the naming of the younger settlements (i.e. settlements from the 18th and the 19th centuries) in the county of Västerbotten as a whole. To shed light on this problem a large number of similar younger habitative names in the area have been examined. The main result of this study is that a number of the second elements of these names can be considered topographically non-motivated and suffixlike. Another result is that the interference from the authorities concerning the direct naming of the young settlements is probably insignificant.

Literacy and Trade in Late Medieval Norway2011In: Journal of Northern Studies, ISSN 1654-5915, E-ISSN 2004-4658, Vol. 5, no 1, p. 29-37Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Only faint traces can be observed of literacy connected to domains other than the legal sphere in late medieval Norway. This may be the result of poor archival practices for keeping written material not strictly connected to legal matters, such as the activities carried out by merchants and tradesmen. The present article tries nonetheless to study whether or not it is possible to relate the notion of literacy to trade in this period of time. The lack of evidence written in Roman letters may, it seems, to some extent be remedied by runic inscriptions excavated in medieval Norwegian towns. We must assume that the use of runes within the domain of trade grew out of an increasingly more complex organisation of mercantile activities which we see especially in an important port such as Bergen in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. It is, perhaps, not only due to chance that the discovered evidence seems to reflect the situation before the middle of the fourteenth century, when Bergen in particular was struck by the Great Plague. Vem är du?: Du-tilltal och modelläsare i Pensionsmyndighetens broschyr Du bestämmer själv – När du vill ta ut pension2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The focus of doctoral research is of great significance for the development of an academic discipline and the potential for innovation. A significant number of PhD graduates however expect to be employed as university teachers, and the correlation between competence needs as suggested by the undergraduate curriculum and PhD research appears to be weak. Based on library catalogue data and digital archives, this study investigates interrelations between the initial research orientation of individual scholars and the development of English as a university subject in Sweden. Dissertation topics 1950-1999 indicate a gradual shift from a dominance of linguistics in the earlier decades to a dominance of literary studies towards the end of the period. Dissertations in the field of English-language literature between 2000 and 2019 demonstrate a growing interest in literatures outside England and the United States, a predominance of studies of prose and a move towards contextual modes of criticism centred on social or political theories. Studies of modern or contemporary literature dominate greatly whereas there are few dissertations on older literature. Undergraduate course plans and literature lists for 2020 from the major research universities show a strong connection between first-term literature courses and current research, as indicated by the topics of PhD dissertations from the first two decades of the twenty-first century. The teaching of older literature is not supported by new research to the same extent, however, which means that it may become increasingly difficult to ensure the close links between research and study programmes stipulated in the Swedish Higher Education Act (1992:1434).

Romance revived: postmodern romances and the tradition1998Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This is the first study to identify and analyse postmodern romances as a new development of the romance and to relate this late twentieth-century subgenre to its tradition. Based on a selection of works published between 1969 and 1994, by A. S. Byatt, Lindsay Clarice, Michael Dorris and Louise Erdrich, John Fowles, Iris Murdoch, Susan Sontag and Jeanette Winterson, it seeks to demonstrate how this new orientation of the romance produces meaning in dialogue with generic conventions and traditional works and, in doing so, both criticises and rehabilitates the genre.A 'postmodern romance' is a double-natured or hybrid text influenced both by inherited romance strategies and experimental postmodern techniques, such as those specified in Linda Hutcheon's study of the "poetics* of postmodernism: ambiguity, parody, paradox, contradiction and self-reflexivity. Hutcheon's theories, as well as theories of the romance, of intertextuality, of feminism, of New Historicism and of popular culture provide the theoretical framework for my argument.Intertextuality is an important manifestation of literary postmodernism, and I isolate three kinds of intertextual relationships which 1 see as characteristic of postmodern romances. Taking as its starting point Julia Kristeva's view that intertextuality includes social, political and cultural, as well as literary, contexts, 1 argue that feminist ideologies appear as cultural intertexts in postmodern romances, thereby challenging the association between the romance genre and a patriarchal world-view. The connections between postmodern and chivalric, historical and women's popular romances are instances of generic intertextuality, where particularly postmodern literary strategies are fused with more conventional attributes of the romance. The links between the postmodern works and the various subgenres of romance affect both the former and the latter, making the postmodern texts accessible to a larger audience, but also revealing forgotten or overlooked complexities in earlier examples of the romance. The return to individual texts is an instance of specific intertextuality, where postmodern romances reinterpret and rewrite particular, earlier romances. Since the relationship between the texts involved is dialogic and, hence, unpredictable, the modern works are also reinterpreted by their intertexts.Postmodern romances transcend the boundaries between real and unreal, male and female, "high" and "low" literature, and in the process they show that this might be equally characteristic of traditional romances. As a result of the fusion of postmodern and romantic literary modes, the inherent duality of the romance genre as such is brought to the fore at the same time as the genre is revived.

    Abstract [en]

The Sami folk high school and the Sami languages 1942–1990

The Swedish Mission Society – SMS (Svenska missionssällskapet – SMS), wanted to improve the opportunities’ for Sami youth in Sweden and therefore they started a folk high school (folkhögskola) for the Sami in 1942. One of the aims of SMS was to help the Sámi to preserve and develop the Sami culture and languages. Over time Sami themes, the languages being one, became more prominent at the school. However some of the problems regarding the language teaching remained: the students wanted to learn different Sami languages, their linguistic skills varied a lot, and there was not that many students who wanted to learn Sami. Despite these problems, the teaching improved over the years and the Sami folk high school remained important for the Sami people during the researched period.

A meaning potential approach to lexical meaning: the case of bit2016In: English Language and Linguistics, ISSN 1360-6743, E-ISSN 1469-4379, Vol. 20, no 1, p. 85-106Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article offers a description of a particular lexical item, the English word bit, from a meaning potential perspective making use of the framework Lexical meaning as ontologies and construals (LOC). The lexical semantics for bit is described not in terms of meanings per se, but rather in terms of potential for cueing conceptual structures of varying schematicity, put to use through a range of cognitive processes, or construals. The article concludes that some conceptual structures are quite fundamental to bit’s use and that their construal is highly flexible and contextually sensitive. The semantic structures evoked by bit are realized through particular communicative and discursive settings, and these semantic structures provide the raw material for all its situated meanings in response to communicative demands. Ultimately, a meaning potential perspective, in particular the model for describing and explaining lexical meaning adopted in this article, facilitates a rich and explicatory description of bit, both as regards its fundamental structures and their construal in attested language use.

    Abstract [en]

Bautasteinn – a phallic symbol? On an interpretation of an Old Norse word

A widespread interpretation of the word bautasteinn is ‘phallic symbol’. However, the interpretation rests on a weak foundation and should, therefore, be rejected. The starting point for the phallic interpretation is that the prefix form bautaðar- (genitive of bautuðr) is the original form of the prefix in bauta(ðar)steinn. The word bautuðr only appears in the Snorre Edda as heiti for ‘horse’, ‘ox’, and these meanings are central for the phallic interpretation of the word bautasteinn.

In the article I show that there is nothing in the Old Norse manuscripts that supports that bautaðar- is the original prefix form in bauta(ðar)steinn. Instead, the manuscripts show that the form bauta- is the oldest and the most certain form of the prefix.

One of the most important sources for the word bautasteinn, and for the original form of the prefix, is Egils saga Skallagrímssonar and its main manuscript, Möðruvallabók from 1330–1370. In the article I show how the source value of some manuscripts of Egils saga previously have been misjudged, and I describe why the reading of the form bauta- in Möðruvallabók is the most certain. As a result of this, the phallic interpretation of the word bautasteinn can be rejected.

    Abstract [en]

Letters to Sigga. Perspectives on the standard- ization of Icelandic through a vernacular literacy practice

The focus of this article is the tension between, on the one hand, a language ideology which is linked to a national identity and based on a dominant literacy, and a wealth of sources for the study of vernacular literacy on the other. The au- thor claims that descriptions of the history and standardization processes of the Icelandic language are characterized by a particularly strong dimension of lan- guage ideology which leaves little room for linguistic variation. It is well known that descriptions of language standardization processes have been used for lan- guage-ideological purposes as a nation-building tool. Furthermore, the author claims that, in descriptions of the standardization of Icelandic, a view of lan- guage emerges that is linked to national identity and where the language is seen as an important factor in building a sense of community. This view is character- ized by uniformity, which results in a strong focus on the dominant literacy and a disregard of variation in the language, e.g. in the vernacular literacy. The article studies a selection of letters from the beginning of the 20th century, written by four women, which show that spelling variations existed in Icelandic vernacular literacy at that time. These variations elicit many questions, particularly in rela- tion to norms, conventions and standardization. A main point of the article is to show what the study of vernacular literacy can contribute to the description of the history of the Icelandic language, particularly its standardization.

    Abstract [en]

In the beginning of the 19th century, Swedish was the only official language of Finland, and thus the dominating language in administration and higher education. However, during the latter part of the century, efforts were made to develop Finnish into a language which could be used in every part of society. In 1881, the medical society Suomalainen Lääkäriseura Duodecim was founded with the development of a medical terminology in Finnish as one of its main purposes. In 1885, a medical paper, Duodecim, and a medical dictionary were published. The aim of this study is to illuminate the vocabulary of the dictionary. The articles published in Duodecim about the dictionary during the same time are used to get to know the context into which the dictionary was published. In this study, the medical dictionary published in 1885, Duodecim’in Sanaluettelo Suomen lääkäreille, and relevant articles in Duodecim are examined. Relevant articles are read and summarized. From the dictionary, relevant words are selected. The method is qualitative and grounded theory is used. The discussion in Duodecim is mainly, except for some discussion about minor linguistic errors, about what vocabulary is to be used for such a basic phenomenon as respiration. In the dictionary, the most striking trait is the presence of Finnish translations of almost every anatomic term in Latin mentioned. A fear of loan-words is observed. This has also been seen by other authors. Other words are translated directly from Swedish. Some translations are more like explanations than translations.

Indigenous counter-narratives: Sámi poetry challenging the mastery of nature2023In: The Routledge companion to ecopoetics / [ed] Julia Fiedorczuk; Mary Newell; Bernard Quetchenbach; Orchid Tierney, New York: Routledge, 2023, 1, p. 382-390Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The essay explores indigenous ecopoetics with a focus on challenges of dualism between reason and nature connected with the “standpoint of mastery”. This involves the activation of traditional spirituality related to a view on reality which implies that there are no sharp borders between various life forms and that everything is alive and interconnected. Nils-Aslak Valkeapää (1943-2001), the most prominent among modern Sámi authors, was awarded the Nordic Council Literature Prize in 1991. In his poetry Valkeapää consciously uses elements from ancient Sámi culture. The poetry books, first published in North Sami, The Sun, My Father, and The Earth My Mother are both permeated with a traditional indigenous view on cosmos as a pluriverse with sentient beings. In the books, Valkeapää contrasts a traditional holistic Sámi and a modern Western worldview. The latter is depicted as connected with colonization, exploitation of natural resources, invasive technologies, and extinction of life forms. Valkeapää‘s ecopoetic approach is reflected in poetry from different parts of Sápmi, the traditional Sámi homeland. The lyrical I of Norwegian Sámi Inga Ravna Eira’s Ii dát leat dat eana (“This is not that earth”) is a goddess who has returned to earth to questions humans about deterioration of the environment and climate change. In Swedish Sámi Linnea Axelsson’s Aednan references are made to the damming of rivers as well as climate change. Both were first published in 2018. Today, intersections between ecopoetics, decolonization, and activism are found in diverse genres on the Sámi cultural scene, and poetry renewing the ancient oral genres of yoik and story-telling remains a central genre.

Om trespråkighet: en undersökning av språkvalet hos samerna i Övre Soppero1984Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this dissertation is to describe the language choice among Saamis in Övre Soppero, and to relate their language choice to social and cultural factors in order to establish whetheror not there exist systematic connections.

The population studied (55 informants) consists of trilingual Saamis living in the village of Övre Soppero in the far north of Sweden. The informants all speak Saami, Swedish and Finnish.

The study is based on interviews and observations, i.e. partly on information provided by the informants themselves concerning language choice in different discourse situations, and partly on my own observations of their language behaviour in different contexts.

Language choice has been related both to domains and discourse situations and to the social backgrounds and attitudes of the informants. A description is given of the linguistic uncertainty in different discourse situations.

A discourse situation comprises the following elements: interlocutors, the role relationship between them, and the scene and/or activity. The term "domain" is an abstraction of concrete discourse situations. By linguistic uncertainty, I mean the individual's use of more than one language in one and the same discourse situation.

Discourse situations are divided into the following domains: family, circle of friends, casual acquaintances, religion, free time, social participation, consumer activity and public matters. All three languages occur in all domains. In the majority of domains, there is great variation in language choice depending on the discourse situation at hand. The degree of linguistic uncertainty also varies.

Discourse situations have also been divided into groups according to the degree of linguistic uncertainty, and according to whether the situation is personal or transactional. Linguistic uncertainty is low, for example, when the interlocutors' roles are unambiguous and clearly established, whereas it is high when, for example, the interlocutors' roles are ambiguous and varied.

Language choice has also been related to the age, profession, education and geographic mobility of the informants. The thing that most separates the different categories of informants from each other is the fact that the youngest group and those with unspecified professional category more often speak Swedish than the other groups. The former groups have a comparatively higher level of education and are socially and geographically mobile.

The group that most often uses Saami is the professional category "reindeer herders". For this group, the Saami language is primarily a means of communication, whereas the youngest informants use the Saami language as an ethnic marker.

The factors that seem to have the greatest influence on language choice are, for example, whether the discourse situation is public or private, and whether the relationship between the interlocutors is intimate or not, and whether it is intra- or inter-ethnic. Of crucial importance are also the sender's age, profession, social and geographical mobility, and the sender's degree of ethnic consciousness.
