    Minoritetsspråk och myndighetskontakt: flerspråkighet bland användare av samiska, meänkieli och finska i Norrbottens län efter minoritetsspråklagarnas tillkomst 20002002Report (Other academic)

    I undersökningen har två intervjuundersökningar gjorts med minoritetsspråksanvändare i Kiruna, Pajala och Haparande kommun. I den ena har direktintervjuer gjorts med 79 individer i de tre kommunerna. I den andra har telefonintervjuer gjorts med 42 individer som representerar föreningar och organisatoner i området, samt med 10 representatner för myndigheter.

    Språkanvändningen har undersökts på individnivå, gruppnivå och samhällsnivå med största fokus på individnivån. För att analysera hur samiska, meänkieli och finska använts i kontakter med myndigheter har ett helhetsperspektiv anlagts på språkanvändningen. Det betyder att både privata och offentliga språkdomäner undersökts. Materialet har sedan analyserats med avseende på hur de språkliga minoriteterna i området har använt sig av minoritetsspråklagarna utifrån de tre kriterierna identitet, deltagande och effektivitet.

    Syftet med studien har varit att utreda varför språkanvändarna i så liten utsträckning har använt sig av de möjligheter som lagarna innebär. En generell frågeställning är om det finns en avgörande skillnad i myndigheternas sätt att betrakta användningen av ett minoritetsspråk i offentliga och formella sammanhang, jämfört med de enskilda individernas sätt att se på minoritetsspråkets nvändning, främst då i kontakterna med olika offentliga organ.

    Studien bygger på mitt eget intresse för broderitekniken Sashiko. Jag valde attpröva sashiko som arbetsområde i undervisningen då jag arbetade somtextillärare. Jag upplevde att sashiko kunde anpassas till styrdokumenten, atteleverna kunde arbeta på olika nivåer och att resultatet av det de producerade blevväldigt lyckat. Icke desto mindre tyckte både jag och eleverna att det var ett roligtoch utvecklande arbetsområde. Ämnesområdet är nytt i undervisningen och jagville utveckla min kunskap om hur andra lärare planerar, genomför och utvärderarsin undervisning i sashiko. Jag har intervjuat fyra textillärare om deras innehålloch metoder i undervisningen. Studien har utgått från läroplansteorin, och jag haranvänt en halvstrukturerad intervjumetod. Textillärarna har svarat på frågor somrör det didaktiska fältet i undervisningen. Deltagarna i studien har utvecklatundervisningen i sashiko utifrån sitt eget intresse för tekniken. Att den gereleverna rika möjligheter till egna val framhåller de som en viktig faktor till denpositiva inställning eleverna har till tekniken. Studien slår bland annat fast attlärarna saknar läromedel i sin undervisning, de efterlyser mer tid att träffakolleger och att de ser stora möjligheter att utveckla sashiko i undervisningen.Tidigare studier har visat att lärare ofta hämtar inspiration från tidigare praktik,egen skolgång, VFU eller traditioner i yrket, vilket inte lärarna i föreliggandestudie gjort.

    Abstract [en]

    Pirate copied objects are fiery artifacts that have caused much anxiety and debate. This article explores the cultural biographies of one particular type of such objects; digital pirate copied films. More specifically, it traces two neglected aspects of such object's life histories: their entanglement in systems of standardization and quality control, and the ways in which new types of aesthetics and narratives are inscribed (or added to) pirated audiovisual content. Paying close attention to the layered and multifaceted dimensions of digital pirate copied film, the paper approaches the act of pirate copying as a form of transfiguration, and suggests that pirated objects are much more than plain replications. By housing a multiplicity of material identities and by carrying (and being surrounded by) alternative narratives of production, the article argues that these objects intervene, disorient, and disrupt the power dynamics of cinematic circulation and ultimately serve to queer commodity spheres.

    Digital music distribution is increasingly powered by automated mechanisms that continuously capture, sort and analyze large amounts of Web-based data. This paper traces the historical development of music metadata management and its ties to the growing of the field of ‘big data’ knowledge production. In particular, it explores the data catching mechanisms enabled by the Spotify-owned company The Echo Nest, and provides a close reading of parts of the company’s collection and analysis of data regarding musicians. Doing so, it reveals evidence of the ways in which trivial, random, and unintentional data enters into the data steams that power today’s digital music distribution. The presence of such curious data needs to be understood as a central part of contemporary algorithmic knowledge production, and calls for a need to re-conceptualize both (digital) musical artifacts and (digital) musical expertize.

    Spotify teardown: inside the black box of streaming music2019Book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    An innovative investigation of the inner workings of Spotify that traces the transformation of audio files into streamed experience. Spotify provides a streaming service that has been welcomed as disrupting the world of music. Yet such disruption always comes at a price. Spotify Teardown contests the tired claim that digital culture thrives on disruption. Borrowing the notion of "teardown" from reverse-engineering processes, in this book a team of five researchers have playfully disassembled Spotify's product and the way it is commonly understood. Spotify has been hailed as the solution to illicit downloading, but it began as a partly illicit enterprise that grew out of the Swedish file-sharing community. Spotify was originally praised as an innovative digital platform but increasingly resembles a media company in need of regulation, raising questions about the ways in which such cultural content as songs, books, and films are now typically made available online. Spotify Teardown combines interviews, participant observations, and other analyses of Spotify's "front end" with experimental, covert investigations of its "back end." The authors engaged in a series of interventions, which include establishing a record label for research purposes, intercepting network traffic with packet sniffers, and web-scraping corporate materials. The authors' innovative digital methods earned them a stern letter from Spotify accusing them of violating its terms of use; the company later threatened their research funding. Thus, the book itself became an intervention into the ethics and legal frameworks of corporate behavior.

    Abstract [en]

    As one of the world’s largest online music providers, the streaming service Spotify has a profound capacity to shape everyday realities through digital technology. This article explores how both openness and control are embedded in Spotify’s ways of delivering recommended playlists to users. After analyzing over 500 pre-designed playlists, we argue that Spotify’s music recommendations evoke individual freedoms and flexibilities, at the same time as they prescribe normative temporalities, neoliberal subjectivities, functional approaches to music, and monetizations of intimacy. Such tensions between freedom and control speak of the dual inheritance of the digital and its potential to both liberate and constrain human action.

    One of the most prominent features of digital music services is the provision of personalized music recommendations that come about through the profiling of users and audiences. Based on a range of “bot experiments,” this article investigates if, and how, gendered patterns in music recommendations are provided by the streaming service Spotify. While our experiments did not give any strong indications that Spotify assigns different taste profiles to male and female users, the study showed that male artists were highly overrepresented in Spotify’s music recommendations; an issue which we argue prompts users to cite hegemonic masculine norms within the music industries. Although the results should be approached as historically and contextually contingent, we argue that they point to how gender and gendered tastes may be constituted through the interplay between users and algorithmic knowledge-making processes, and how digital content delivery may maintain and challenge gender relations and gendered power differentials within the music industries. Seen through the lens of critical research on software, music and gender performativity, the experiments thus provide insights into how gender is shaped and attributed meaning as it materializes in contemporary music streams.

    This article deals with how teachers and pupils in seventh to ninth grade in Sweden look upon and relate to the incorporation of new digital technology in mother tongue education (Swedish). The result shows that both the classification and framing of the subject is being challenged by new technology, but that the awareness of the impact seems to be limited. It is suggested that the development might now be approaching a stage where the gradual change, "evolution", that has taken place through all the invasive "forms of media" that have been added to the teaching environment, will now contribute to a punctuated equilibrium, which will hopefully lead to a new inner stability or homeostasis, in other words a paradigm shift. This, however, requires teachers to appropriate new technology as well as an awareness of its influence on the pedagogical discourse.

    In the late eighteenth century explorers and scientists started venturing into the Arctic beyond areas that were already populated by Indigenous peoples and a smaller number of new settlers, and ultimately towards the North Pole. It was about as far as anyone could get from civilization at the time, and in many respects it remains this way to this day. What the first explorers saw had not yet been seen and recorded by Western civilization. They were the first to tell the stories and document the state of the Arctic – its physical landscape and Indigenous cultures. The prosaic descriptions are many and colourful, moving and poetic, and they also soon began to provide detailed accounts of the state of Indigenous living conditions. A shared feature in these first accounts, in prints and in paintings, is the descriptions of a harsh and barren landscape frozen in time; static and unchangeable, except for the swift sways in weather. Fanciful images of indigenous communities in isolated settlements, without any contact with “western civilization” came to shape the following generations perception of the Arctic. While the Arctic gradually became a place where new maps and lines drawn became a reality to outsiders, it was also, and had been for thousands of years, the homeland for many and diverse groups of indigenous peoples, surviving in at times unforgiving conditions while developing vibrant cultures, including strong traditions for adapting to changing conditions. The storytelling is today highly valued by itself and for its importance as a complement to science. And northern art has become more vibrant than ever as shown in some chapters here integrating the changes occurring on so many grounds. It is time for new images of the region to be established. With this book we wish these new images and the new knowledge constantly being produced to reach a broad audience as the interested general public as well as policy-makers and scientific colleagues.

    Abstract [en]

    The aim for this study was to research the Swedish migration agencies’ communication on the social platform Facebook, and try to build an understanding of the agencies construction of non-political message to the public. We were also addressing the present discursive struggle in the comment section below the agency’s publications, to get a better understanding of why users are criticizing the agency, and how they are handling the critics. 

    This is because of the national politics surrounding migration can be seen as a “two-way-split”, where the public opinion is either very positive to the migration, or very negative. The study was conducted by analyzing two months’ worth of Facebook publications from the Swedish migrations agency, and included a total of 280 comments from users to study how struggles form between the “two-way-split”. 

    Critical discourse analysis and Fairclough's three-dimensional model was used as method to study the problem on a qualitative perspective. The appliance of Foucault's and Faircloughs theories about discourse have been applied on the material consistently throughout the study. 

    The results of the study show that the Swedish migration agency are using two discursive forms of presenting messages to the public. The first is a governmental discourse, were focus lies on a natural position to the politics with statistics and facts, the second is a storytelling discourse, which is more focused on presenting people and their individual stories to the public, but like the first one, with a natural position. The results also show that the engaging public is using a different, more public, discourse to the subject, and with that forms a lot of negative comments about the agency work and the politics behind it. In conclusion, we form the belief that the agency has adapted the new storytelling discourse as a communicative strategy to raise the trusts of the agencies work to the public, but the critical engaging public still mistrusts the work, and keeps the discursive struggle with the agency alive.

    Denna studie syftar till att ge inblick i det område som rör bedömning i bildämnet, samt synliggöra verksamma bildlärares bedömningspraktik och förhållningssätt till bedömning och likvärdighet. Trots att det finns problematiska aspekter med bedömningen i bild är forskning i området bristfällig. I denna studie besvaras därför frågor om hur ett bedömningsarbete i bild kan se ut, vilken problematik lärarna ställs inför i bedömningssituationer, samt hur likvärdighet kan uppnås i bildämnet. Detta med hjälp av kvalitativa intervjuer med verksamma bildlärare på både grundskolan och gymnasiet. Resultatet visar på både likheter och skillnader i bedömningspraktiken, samt att arbetet är utmanande och komplext. Detta förklaras bland annat av det fria tolkningsutrymmet som läroplanen öppnar upp för, att konstnärliga och praktiska kunskaper är svåra att sätta ord på, samt att lärarna förhåller sig olika till ett kollegialt samarbete.

    Kan vi idag ha något att lära av de klassiska, medeltida och tidigmoderna kulturerna? Många skulle svara ja på den frågan, men det finns också de som skulle beskriva det förmoderna som irrationellt, traditionsbundet, kollektivistiskt och framför allt otidsenligt.

    Att behålla kontakten med det förmoderna behöver inte betyda att man bekräftar ett "arv" från det förflutna eller ägnar sig åt återbruk av äldre tiders idéer. Bättre är att omvandla, utveckla eller avveckla tidigare tankar eller kritik kring sociala och estetiska mönster. I antologin Omodernt - Människor och tankar i förmodern tid medverkar elva forskare som representerar en rad humanistiska discipliner. Deras texter berättar på mångfacetterade sätt om idéer och föreställningar, språk och texter från antiken till 1600-talet som är relevanta än idag. De argumenterar för vikten av kunskap om de perioder som ligger före vår moderna tid och ger konkreta exempel på forskning i den andan.

    Det viktiga är att uppmuntra kommunikation över seklen, viljan att vidga sina egna associationer kring mänskligt handlande, att fördjupa sina insikter om hur människor i historien försökt att hantera sin existentiella och samhälleliga situation. Genom sådana perspektivbyten kan vi i bästa fall få klargörande idéer även om vår egen tid.

    In spite of not even being officially registered three months before the European Parliament Elections of 2014, the Spanish upstart party Podemos captured almost 8 percent of the vote, while barely nine months after its formation, in October 2014, social surveys were citing the party as the leading force in national politics. The overall purpose of this paper is to explore how Podemos’ aesthetic and its discursive strategies are being used to mobilize affect and create collective identities in the battle for political hegemony in Spain. I argue in dialogue with Laclau [2005. On populist reason. London: Verso], Errejón and Mouffe [2016. Podemos: in the name of the people. London: Lawrence & Wishart] that: (a) the articulation of a new political grammar and discursive conflicts in which the popular majority can identify themselves as subjects in opposition to an adversary ‘Other’ plays a central role in constructing ‘the people’ as a new form of political culture, especially in times of crisis whereby; (b) the notion of populism transgresses categories such as ‘oversimplification’ and/or ‘demagogy’ and can also be regarded in terms of exhibiting sensitivity to popular demands and participatory democracy. My findings show that welfare politics are not necessarily best communicated through traditional left-wing symbols, due to the left’s popular link with communism and political defeat; these having been repeatedly recounted by the media/culture industry throughout history. Indeed, many may share the idea of protecting a nation’s common social services without wanting to position themselves within a Marxist (leftist) framework. I point to the representative crisis as an affective crisis where there is a potential affective space to be filled. From here, I stress that resistance movements seem to need to learn the current media logic of conflict and recognition in order to mediate affect and produce identification.

    Approximating humans to animals is a technique employed in Greek Literature, drawing on epic stylistics. The topsy-turvy nature of Old Comedy encouraged the use of animal choruses and characters. In Middle Comedy, their dramatic use appears limited: a number of similes are built around refernces to animals for both male and female characters, producing social comments in humorous form. This paper explores how animal semantics in selected fragments (Alexis and Epicrates)  impart occasional otherness to female entities (women and hetairai) reinforcing the sense of difference from the norm, whereas on other occasions they subtly underline the importance of females in the civic environment.

    Early Byzantine historiography offers two contradictory portrayals of Theodora  (Crowned Empress 427-458 CE).  Whereas in Procopius’ Wars of Justinian and Buildings she appears to be a courageous and influential empress, in his later work, Secret History, she is represented as a deviant female figure. Procopius’ narrative of Theodora is overall disapproving of her character and actions. He discusses her early years as a ‘shameless’ performer and a prostitute, brought up in the social margins of Constantinople; Similarly, during her reign, he describes her exercise of power over the palace and her subjects as cruel and violent, driven by premeditated self-interest.  In this chapter, I aim to discuss Theodora’s portrayal by Procopius as a sociologically deviant female; it is a systematic study of what the author considers to be social norm violations that are subject to social sanction. I will specifically concentrate on Theodora’s depiction as a sexually deviant young performer. I will then focus upon actions of cruelty and violence in her political and social career as an Empress.  I will show how the paradigm of Theodora, in Procopius’ Secret History, can be read as both making visible coercive social, political and religious power structures, as well as, disenfranchising femininity in early Byzantium.

    Abstract [en]

    Spartacus is attested in several ancient sources (Plutarch, Appian, and Florus) as the leader of a rebellion against the Roman Republic (73 to 71 BC). Despite that none of Spartacus' historical representations overtly suggest that he aimed at reforming Roman society by abolishing slavery and promoting equality, he has inspired a number of intellectuals across times and cultures as a egalitarian leader. Marx, in the Manchester letter to Engels (1861), considered him a real representative of the ancient 'proletariat’ and members of the German Spartacus League, a forerunner of the Communist Party of Germany. In contemporary popular culture, the most recent reception of the tale of Spartacus is the US Television series Spartacus: Blood and 

    Sand (premiered on Starz in: 2010- followed by a late prequel and a sequel), where he is also portrayed as a just and egalitarian leader.

    In this paper, I will discuss how Spartacus (2010-) promotes social and gender equality as an ancient virtue within a contemporary context. Unlike Spartacus’ historical and other cinematic representations, women play a major role in the 2010- TV series either as slaves that join the rebellion, inspired by the egalitarian Thracian slave-leader, or wealthy Romans who oppose him. Despite incidental nudity, scenes of a sexual and violent nature, a TV MA rating for graphic violence, and strong sexual content in overexposed video stylization, I will show that female characters evolve from the older sexualized and objectified females of gladiatorial Sword and Sandals (e.g. Warrior and the Slave Girl: 1958) to strong and brave action heroines. Finally, I will discuss how the 2010- TV series reflects upon the impact of equality and feminism in the portrayal of the ancient world in our contemporary popular culture.

    Abstract [en]

    From Classical antiquity to the late Roman Empire, courtesans (hetairai) and other sex-workers are considered an integral part of elite lifestyle. In reality, actual evidence about them is scattered and limited. As a result of this, recent scholarship and art represented them as more deliberated and charming than citizen wives  (eg Jung’s archetypes, Manet’s Olympias etc). However, their variability in textual representation resulted in their recent reconstruction as marginal in status with undefined agency and hierarchy (Davidson: 1997; McClure: 2003; Faraone and McClure: 2006). Most importantly, their textual and performative representation varies significantly. In early Attic Comedy for example (5th and 4th BCE) they feature as silent nudes pawed by men (Aristophanes) but they ‘evolve’ within 200 years to the stock character of New Greek Comedy (Menander). There, they are outspoken and somehow, romanticized.  

    This paper attempts an overview and analysis of the courtesans’ portrayal from Old Greek comedy (Aristophanes) to comic texts of the early Roman Empire, namely Lucian’s comic mimes (Dialogues of the Courtesans) and Athenaeus’ proverbial quotations from famous comedies, now lost in extant form (Learned Banqueters 13). I will contextualize the evolution of character and linguistic abilities of the courtesan with reference to their agency, emotions and status.  I will finally demonstrate how courtesan-related humor informs us, modern readers, about the commercialization of sex, gender and agency in the ancient world.

    Current scholarship typically views the ancient Greek prostitute/ courtesan figure as an artificially manipulated, sexualized body motivated by material profit. By examining fragments of Middle Comedy and their echoes in post-classical antiquity, this article proposes an alternative view of courtesans and prostitutes as professionals of emotional labor. Through narrative analysis, I show that the Greek comic portrayal of courtesans is multifaceted and not sufficiently illuminated by discussions of their subjectivity, aesthetic modifications, and greed but also extends to the realm of their emotions. Intersecting gender and humor theories with the concept of Emotional Labor (Hochschild 1983), I then argue that these figures can be seen to comically modify their appearance and behavior in order to reflect contemporary ideological and cultural standards of female sexual conduct. Viewing humor as a communicative tool for social hierarchies consequently facilitates a more complex analysis of attitudes towards the commercialization of bodies and emotions in Greek literature and culture.

The image of Spartacus as a noble if doomed avenger is familiar and his story has been retold through history as a cautionary tale about social injustice.The television series Spartacus takes a different view, with a violent depiction of the man and his times and a focus on the archetype of the gladiator—powerful, courageous and righteous. This collection of new essays studies the series as an exploration of masculinity.In the world of Spartacus, men jockey for social position, question the nature of their lives, examine their relationships with women and with each other, and explore their roles in society and the universe.     Abstract [en]

    Several films by Woody Allen (Interiors, Oedipus Wrecks, Match Point and Mighty Aphrodite) contain elements of classical tradition that have been neglected or oversimplified by film scholarship as references to the director’s personal engagement with psychoanalysis. Using Mighty Aphrodite (1995) as illustration, I argue that these films convey the expression of contemporary social issues through a complex and multi-layered reception of classical culture that goes beyond pure psychoanalysis. In Mighty Aphrodite, specifically, Allen deploys the strict formalism of tragedy and the myth of Oedipus as film mechanisms for contemporary societal discourse. Via evaluation of film and narrative, I demonstrate that Allen’s classical reception is self-reflexive as it refers back to the very processes of performative arts. Furthermore, Allen utilizes the classical tradition as a form of expression in contemporary classical Hollywood narratives and creates a rich cultural experience for his audience; a cinematic treatise on cultural remix, dramatic formalism and classical reception per se.

    Digital gender: a manifesto: report on the research workshop: digital gender: theory, methodology, and practice2014Report (Other academic)

    While early day Internet research often hailed “Cyberspace” as an arena where individuals would be liberated from the social shackles of their biological gender, a growing body of research makes evident the exaggerations present within these romanticized claims. Though the online gender divide is rapidly eroding, the Internet remains rooted in society at large. While digital technologies can challenge normative views, they therefore often maintain status quo. Consequently, there is a need to revisit old claims and challenge traditional notions of ”Digital Gender”. In this vein, this manifesto reports and synthesizes findings and discussions from an international workshop titled ”Digital Gender: Theory, Methodology and Practice”, held at Umeå University, Sweden, in early 2014. Against this backdrop, we chart out a new agenda for research on how the digital intermingle with the social in the production of gender. In particular, we argue that scholars must move past the idea of Internet as a separate – virtual – realm and direct attention to the increasingly complex ways that digital technologies permeate social practices, altering the very fabric of society itself. On the one hand, we stress the need for research that focuses on how particular Internet technologies help maintain as well as challenge normative views of gender. On the other hand, we stress the need to uncover how particular material properties of digital technology affect the (un)making of such views. Overall, we also stress the need for scholars of gender to move beyond binary oppositions and to be appreciative of intersectionality in their analyses of digital gender construction.

    Humanistic uses of digital technologies have opened up new ways to think about, communicate, and discuss historical research. The common use of digital tools to visually represent ancient cultures and sites, however, has also introduced new issues. For example, critics have argued that digital visualisations, largely synonymous with reconstruction in 3D models, often attempt to represent a photorealistic-artificial vision of the past, and may often prove to be a way to communicate history to a large(r) audience [Forte and Siliotti 1997]. Against this backdrop, this article will discuss precisely how technology may help immerse researchers into historically situated life, and radically advance historical research. Adding to related criticisms of ocularcentric traditions of knowledge production, we contribute to this stream of research by arguing that contemporary visual representations of the past often concentrate on visual representations and seemingly maintain antiquity as a sanitised historio-cultural ideal [Westin 2012] [Tziovas 2014]. More specifically, this article seeks to demonstrate the potential of digital humanities to move beyond mere representations on screen and to mobilize other senses (specifically sound) as a historically situated component for research. For this purpose, we focus on the abstract principles and overall methodology for a recreation of the experience of sounds in the Roman amphitheatre.

    Digital Archaeology? Greece on Focus: Tools, methodologies and trends2017Other (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Archaeology is an interdisciplinary science, as it is a scholarly study of past processes that often combines space, place, natural science, materials and texts in its interpretation. Presently, the majority of practicing archaeologists include digital tools in their work (e.g. data keeping, digital mapping, visualization tools). And recently, digital visualization is trending beyond 3D modelling and landscape reconstruction and into the interactive, scientific visualization of data in order to render relations between geographies and cultures, sensory properties (Betts 2011, Betts 2017, Foka and Arvidsson 2016), external /internal networks and aerial visualizations. On an international level, we have come to speak of the notion of “cyber-archaeology” (Forte 2015): archaeological methods that utilize participatory technology to interact with past artefacts and spaces and to understand the past through reflection and cooperative efforts. Current digital tools and methodologies help capture and display knowledge about the past. While there is considerable room for improvement, both in terms of tools and of methodologies, from composing plain databases to visualizations intended for wider museum audiences, we address here the current progress within Greek archaeological practice and emphasize the importance of sustainable and updated digital research infrastructures in order to enhance access to materials for researchers and laypeople alike.

    A fresh look at longstanding questions, across a temporal range (classical antiquity to the early modern) and a geographical range (Asia to Europe, Islam to Christendom). The optimistic investigators find gender subversion, women's agency, and men's self-criticism in comic forms from high (Homer) to low (folklore, burlesque, jokes, cartoons), imagining a complex audience.

    Humor is the tendency of particular cognitive experiences to provoke laughter and provide amusement. Throughout history, it has played a crucial role in defining gender roles and identities. This collection offers an in-depth thematic examination of this relationship between humor and gender, spanning a variety of historical and cultural backdrops. Bringing together a medley of case studies diachronically and across cultures, the book examines gendered humorous expressions from classical antiquity to the late eighteenth century and across visual culture, literature and performance in both European and Asian premodern contexts.

    Universities around the world have increasingly turned to digital infrastructures as a way to revamp the arts and humanities. This article contributes a fresh understanding by examining the material development of HumlabX, a research laboratory for digital humanities at Umeå University, Sweden. Specifically, we approach the empirical case as a timeline of research funding, projects, events, and deliverables to examine how the research laboratory as an organizational and material space developed and evolved in relation to new technology investments. Based on our analysis, we argue that while digital research infrastructures can, indeed, stimulate innovation in and around research, aimed to produce new knowledge, digital technologies carry social and material implications that affect organizational processes. We show that while knowledge production processes at HumlabX were highly influenced by the infrastructural legacy of the past, they indeed directed scholars toward innovation. By discussing these implications in detail, we move beyond the debate of humanities qua digital, and demonstrate the need for scholars of digital humanities to engage in the development of policies for digital research infrastructures. Using a Swedish case study, we argue that research laboratories for the digital humanities must be scrutinized and should be fully exposed as socio-material organizations that develop, and should develop, over time. In particular, we stress the need to ensure that digital humanities laboratories are sustainable and open for redevelopment.

    When collective action for community is defined as local development or as a struggle for survival different understandings are in focus. Politically, this kind of community action is defined as local development and understood in terms of growth and economics. An economic approach to community action is also emphasised in the EU-programmes that support local development groups and projects. On the other hand local groups describe their activities as a struggle for community and community survival.

    Inspired by feministic research approaches and with an interest in human aspects and values this study investigates meanings of community action as experienced and expressed by rural inhabitants and activists. The study is based on fieldwork that was carried out in a small rural community in the northern inlands of Sweden: Trehörningsjö. Since the middle of the 1990s, the women in Trehörningsjö have driven collective action to uphold the community. With its point of departure in the community and expanding into the arenas of reserach and politics, the study takes on the form of a reflexive research process in which the researcher's former knowledge and new understandings are made visible and discussed parallel with the interpretations made. The main focus of the study is the activist's demand of voice, visibility and worth.

    The first chapter presents the local community and provides a background to the study. The chapter includes an account of the reflexive approach that widened the field of research from a local to a translocal study of community action. In chapters two, three, four and five the struggle for community is reflected through fieldwork experiences in Trehörningsjö and other arenas beyond the village. Situated events and instances of collective action such as the fight for the local health care centre, are analysed as symbolic expressions of community values and rural importance. From chapter two and onwards, the study follows the footsteps of the leading female activist in and beyond the community itself; that is, the day-to-day work, meetings, conferences and other places where community action is acted out. The struggle for community is proven to focus on translocal rather than local action. In chapter six the fieldwork experiences - that tell about resistance and a struggle for community values and perspectives - are placed in the wider context of the rural development movement, local development research and governmental rural policy in Sweden. On all these arenas community action tend to be interpreted as local development in line with a growth perspective, rather than as community protests and struggles that expresses other meanings. Chapter seven takes the analyses and discussion further, and relates community struggle to concepts such as civil society and social economy. Anthony Giddens concept of life politics and Alberto Meluccis concept of collective action are used to deepen the analysis on how humane meanings and relation based aspects of community action are made invisible on the political "growht and development" agenda. Community struggle presents a possibility for rural inhabitants to (re)define and reclaim their community and themselves as important and valuable. However, to be able to understand what the concept of community struggle expresses, and demands, it needs to be acknowledged as a form of action that has the potential to challenge established bureaucratic and political defintions, which, in practice, proves to be difficult.

    I uppsatsen har jag utifrån intervjuer som är gjorda med UmeBrås samarbetsparter beskrivit och problematiserat vad mina informanter har sagt om frågor som handlar om sexualitet och könsidentitet. Jag har visat att även om det tycks finnas relativt goda baskunskaper om ämnet och flera var medvetna om situationen för HBTQ-ungdomar så blir det lätt så att informanterna ändå belyser problemet på ett sätt som gör att HBTQ-ungdomar görs avvikande – de som behöver hjälp. Även om många av mina informanter möter ungdomar dagligen så är det många av dem som i vissa lägen inte ser hur de själva upprätthåller en heterosexuell norm och inte lägger problemet på en strukturell nivå eller på en normnivå utan på individnivå. Samma risk uppstår när de faktiskt gör sådana problematiseringar. Ett av mina exempel gällde hur informanterna förklarade våld i allmänhet med en problematisk maskulinitet. När de lyfter fram maskulinitet som en orsak till våld hade de flesta ett konstruktivistiskt perspektiv på att maskulinitet kan förändras. Men det var få som satte konstruktionen av maskulinitet i relation till heteronormativitet. Med hjälp av begreppet ”heterosexuell matris” blir det dock tydligt att dessa normer hänger ihop, och att maskulinitet inte bara är problematisk för att den kan leda till fysiskt våld. Maskulinitet så som den formats i vårt samhälle bidrar också till heteronormativitet. Insatser som baserar sig på individtänkande med ledord som acceptans och tolerans gör att man säkert kommer att kunna hjälpa enskilda individer, men riskerar att i det stora hela inte kommer att komma längre. Det riskerar att reproducera vad som är norm och vad som är avvikelse. Min förhoppning med denna uppsats är att de som jobbar med ungdomar kan se att det kan finnas andra sätt att arbeta så att inte själva arbetet gör att HBTQ-ungdomar känner sig som de som frångår normen och är annorlunda och det onormala.

    Musical collaboration – or cooperation?: Exploring newspeak in Swedish arts policy2017Conference paper (Refereed)

    The recent years have seen a process of regionalisation in Swedish culture and arts policy. This change goes under the name Kultursamverkansmodellen, which on the government’s webpage translates to “the cultural cooperation model” (Government Offices of Sweden 2015).

    The way samverkan is used in daily talk it should rather translate to collaboration – discussions, exchange of ideas and mutually beneficial activities. However, my material suggests elements of hierarchy in the system of cultural policy and funding where the term samverkan seem to signify a logic of consensus, in effect making it hard for cultural actors to challenge a system where certain music and art forms hold a hegemonic position.

    Drawing on Michel De Certeau’s concept of tactics and strategy (1984) and Ruth Finnegan’s pathways (Finnegan 1989), this paper uses a discourse logics approach (Glynos and Howarth 2007) to disseminate the term samverkan in multiple musicking contexts: in policy, by musicians, regional government officials and concert organisers, as well as in connection with other nodes such as “quality” and “projects”.

    The paper is part of the author’s on-going PhD project, which aims to shed light on how conditions for music making are constructed, protected and challenged by studying the intersection between governing and musical processes.

    In this thesis, I study how conditions for music-making can be developed, maintained and challenged through government support processes in the Swedish region Dalarna. The research questions focus on the ways music, policy and governance relate to each other, what kinds of musicians and ways of making music are favored in these relations, and the agency and meaning of place. The study is made through participant observation of musical events, cultural policy meetings, and the everyday practice of cultural policy officials; interviews with musicians, organizers and cultural policy officials; cultural policy documents as well as musicians’ and organizers’ public documents such as concert posters and websites.

    The musical landscape of Dalarna is summarized as a complex web with pathways that reach far beyond the geographical borders of the region. The cultural cooperation model works as a hierarchy from center to periphery, from the national government, through agencies, regional government, musical institutions and organizers, musicians and audiences. We can analyze all these practices as being part of music, as musicking. But we could also describe them another way, where the practice of cultural policy is dependent on and conditioned by the musical practices it is set to govern. In this way, musicians are always in some way also creating policy.

    I discuss genre hierarchies and further argue that music can, or should, not always be motivated by its effects on regional development or its social impact, it also needs to be allowed to be unhealthy and unprofitable. When we support music, we should be aware that it can be a hobby as well as a business, a serious artistic endeavor as well as play. And more often than not, music is all of these things at the same time.

    Through the Swedish voluntary education organisations called studieförbund bands get access to musical education, rehearsal space, gear and gigs. It’s a modest but long time funding without any demands on return. Studieförbund are considered to be one of the most important factors for the success of the Swedish music industry due to the educational role it plays for amateur musicians. As musicians gain experience they tend to “outgrow” the studieförbund. There are often no institutional aids to continue their progress, since arts policy regards pop genres to be commercial by default. Recently, former musicians and festival arrangers have developed regional coaching programs for pop bands, leaning on policies of “cultural and creative industries” instead of arts policies. Drawing on Michel De Certeaus concept of tactics and strategy (1984), as well as Ruth Finnegans pathways (1989), this paper discusses these efforts as tactical manoeuvres by music creators as they navigate regional spaces of education, arts policies and industry strategies.

    Syftet är att ur ett kulturanalytiskt perspektiv beskriva och analysera Länsdelegationen i jämställdhet. Början av uppsatsen kan ses som ett bakgrundskapitel. Detta för att förstå uppkomsten av undersökningen. Där förklaras kort den svenska jämställdhetspolitiken, hur det strategiska arbetet sker genom jämställdhetsintegrering och Länsstyrelsens roll och arbete kring Länsdelegationen. Vidare behandlas hur delegationen arbetar med den avsiktsförklaring de tagit fram och hur de förhåller sig till den. Men också på hur delegaterna faktiskt ser på sitt deltagande, hur de arbetar med att införliva jämställdhetspolitiken i praktiken samt de svårigheter och möjligheter som kommer med arbetet i delegationen. Vidare diskuteras hur delegaterna ser på framtiden med sin medverkan och delegationens varande. Senare görs en kort jämförelse med hur förändringen gestaltat sig sedan delegationens start år 1997. Detta med hjälp av de två tidigare utvärderingarna från år 2000 och år 2006. I den avslutande diskussionen knyts uppsatsen ihop genom att besvara syftet med utvärderingen: att söka svar på hur delegationen arbetar och verkar med jämställdhetsarbetet.

    Till undersökningen valde jag att arbeta med två olika insamlingsmetoder, dels en webbenkät som gått ut till samtliga delegater i Länsdelegationen i jämställdhet, dels tre intervjuer med några av delegaterna. Jag har även studerat den avsiktsförklaring som togs fram för år 2014-2016 för att få kunskap om vad delegationen ska förhålla sig till. Jag har också använt två tidigare utvärderingar som gjorts av Länsdelegationen i jämställdhet samt den debattartikel som delegationen publicerade inför 2014 års nationella genusforskarkonferens, g14 som var förlagd till Umeå universitet.

    Slutsatserna i undersökningen är att Länsdelegationen främst verkar som en symbolisk faktor och många talar och skriver om att de vill bli en mer arbetande grupp och agera utåt och bidra till att Västerbotten ska bli ett jämställt län. Men det stannar av där, det blir tillsynes kanske inte mer än vackra ord i handlingsplanerna.
