Being human in a technological age: A study of the impacts of smart technology usage2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Today humans are using a large amount of smart technology to support their daily activities, for instance smartphones, tablets and computers. The relationship towards technology is changing, and with the change comes questions. In this thesis a qualitative interview study was used to deepen the understanding of humans’ daily use of technology and its impacts on their daily life. The study has shown that humans’ technology usage has both positive and negative impacts on their daily life. For instance that hyper-connectivity broadens humans network of contacts and they constantly has the possibility to reach out into the world without having to travel. However, the study has also shown that hyper-connectivity creates technodependence which appears to reinforce bad characteristics, for instance laziness and seclusion since humans tend to prefer socializing through technology instead of in real life. Finally, the study has also shown that the experienced advantages of being connected predominates the disadvantages, which result in a decreased feeling of technology usage being harmful.

Spelifikationers potentiella värdeskapande i projektarbete2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Digital games are today avaliable on all kinds of different platform. Games and game thinking is also increasingly being applied within non-traditional contexts. This thesis explores the term "gamifiation" which can be defined as "the use of game design elements in non-game contexts". The purpose of the study was to identify and give perspective on the discourse surrounding the use and applicability of the term today. More specifically, it explores the possibilities of the potentially value creating ability in the context of work, and focused on the application of gamified software in the context of project work. To understand the power in using game elements in non-game context, the field surrounding motivation in games is explored, as well as the discourse surrounding gamification. Through a qualitative survey using semi-structured interviews the potential use and value of gamification in the project context was investigated. Three approaches to gamification, a rejective, a commercial and an academic are presented. Self-determination theory is used to understand motivation in games. This and the insights resulting from the interviews, the survey of the field, and the theoretical understanding of project work are used to give a perspective on the use of game elements in project work. Among the recommendations are designing for a particular context and different user groups, connecting the use of interface elements with the users intrinsic needs for competence, autonomy and relatedness, using gamification as a part and not the focus of the design process, and adding percieved user values, or "fun" to motivate users. Gamification is suggested for appliance as a means to attract staff and clients to a project, motivating users to learn or achieve or motivating users to engage with the system in a certain way.

How to encourage stretching and breaks at work: Understanding long term usage of a behaviour change support system2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

We are spending more and more time seated at work, which increases the risk for health problems. Behaviour change support systems that encourage breaks and stretching at work have been used as interventions to try to reduce these problems. No previous studies had looked at how these systems were used for long periods of time. In this qualitative study based on ten interviews, we aimed for expanding our understanding of long-term usage of such systems by studying one called ‘Efons’. The results indicate that the main factors influencing long-term usage are timely reminders, the impact that the stretching exercises has on the users’ health and the education of the user about health recommendations. We also found elements we argue have the ability to influence long-term usage and currently do not exist in the system studied or its context of use, such as adapt the system to the needs of the user or provide education about why these systems are useful.

Hur kan vi uppnå Effektivt Lärande?: Lärares perspektiv på digitala övningsmetoder2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Society depend on good education for preparing its citizens to meet the demands of tomorrow. In the last decades, society has gone through a digital revolution that has changed how social bearing institutions and organizations integrate with each other on an evolutional level. This digitization has seeped its way into our schools as well, but with varied results. While organizations like those of the retail genre has benefited massively of the digitization with features like online shopping and personalized ads, the schools have in some cases seen worse results from students using digital means. Until this day, digitization of the education sector has proved to be most challenging and has not yet digitally evolved in a beneficial way for all students and schools. That means we have to look more deeply into what makes a good digital tool for students that actually enhances the results. Thus the questions asked in this research are: How can digital exercise platforms be designed to promote effective learning? By interviewing teachers from modern day schools, we can see that there is a wide variety of apps and tools for students to use and it is up to the teacher to find the best suitable ones, which might be an extremely time consuming and challenging process to navigate the sea of apps. Many of the apps lacks a sound pedagogy, or they might be too expensive or have ads that creates distractions and lowers motivation. This creates a gap in the efficient learning process. That gap can be filled by teachers and developers identifying shortage of motivation, reflection, goal orientation and social learning. Thus, as a secondary research question I ask: How can we implement a gatekeeping process by identifying gaps in efficient learning for apps in the educational sector?

Agile in action: Hybrid methodologies in practice2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In recent years an increase of agile methodologies and their implementation in mainstream software engineering projects have been seen, but this implementation has reportedly changed agility in practice into a hybrid form of agility and more classic methodologies. With a lack of research regarding these hybrid methodologies this multiple case study empirically analyses the practice of methodologies from two different conglomerates and places the results in the Information Technology Management framework (ITMF) to answer the research question; How are hybrid agile methodologies enacted in practice in mature agile teams and why are they enacted in such a way? The result show that the organizations work agile within a waterfall framework, a hybrid form of requirement handling into agile development followed by waterfall testing. The hybrid methodologies are imposed by external factors such as the sales department and traditional economic reporting. This study acknowledges a need for a greater understanding of the engagement between external actors and software development.

Bildernas byggstenar: En studie om pixlar och vektorers egenskaper i form av digitala material2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

With a new digital world that runs parallel with our physical one, we are also facing a new type of architecture and new materials that this new architecture is built on. In this thesis I examine pixels and vectors, two of the digital materials used to create pictures. By approaching them as digital materials, I have mapped their different qualities, when and where one or the other is more or less applicable and the reason behind it. My main research question asked was the following: Are the (digital) materials challenged outside their primary fields of application, and in that case, in which way? With this question in mind, I carried out a semiotic picture analysis on four pictures, later on dividing them into four different categories, based on their different qualities and their ability to deliver information. These categories can be used to determine which qualities different digital material used to create pictures possesses and therefore also help to determine what material that is most appropriate to use when a specific expression of the finish product is desirable. Furthermore, my four categories can be used as a way to challenge the materials outside their comfort zone, this due to the awareness of the materials strengths and weaknesses.

    Abstract [en]

Information technology is a significant part of businesses and crucial for organizational survival in highly competitive environments. Due to the high rate of technological change, countinuous adaptation is an inevitable part of the organizational life. An increasing number of organizations are migrating their business to cloud services because of the many potential benefits. Current research about change management and technological change has however paid little attention to the characteristics of cloud computing. This paper aims to investigate how the introduction of cloud-based collaboration tools affect change management processes in organizations. To this end, we studied change management associated with the introduction of Office 365 from the perspectives of a change management service provider and change agents within user organizations. Data has been collected through semi-structured interviews with four consultants within this area and three respondents who represent internal change agents. The results of this study show that change in relation to cloud services is divided into two parts; the technical implementation and the change effort. This indicates that change management not necessarily needs to be performed in connection to the technical implementation. Furthermore, our study show that the flexibility of cloud services make it possible to use it in many different ways, why it is of big importance to identify user needs to maximize the value of the collaboration tools. Finally, the results indicate that the constant update of the software in cloud services makes it favourably to work with agile methods in change management, although the long-term goal should be to create the ability to handle continuous change within the organization.

Digital platforms challenges and opportunities: Evidence from a traditional market sector2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Digital platforms are becoming more and more established in the current digital age and with it come many new business ideas, models and more. This has lead to several disciplines and industries taking an interest in them and sought to build one themselves. However, little is known about how the context of a digital platform can affect its launch. Existing research todays focuses on general strategies for launching a platform but we argue that context matters and that it changes the challenges and opportunities for the platform. This thesis aims to fill this gap for traditional industries that faces different kinds of challenges compared to more IT established areas. To achieve this, we took part of a case study and conducted a qualitative data collection process consisting of interviews with project members of The Omega project. We were able to identify a set of challenges and opportunities presented to the project: diversity, organizational, and culture to name a few.

Based on our findings we could conclude that digital platforms for traditional industries comes with its own set of challenges and opportunities but that these can be used to find similarities to other industries to help tackle them. Therefore, we suggest further research to be done on how the context affects the challenges and opportunities in other industries.
