    Abstract [en]

This written report examines how women experience psychological stress in their work as a referee. This study aims to contribute to the research field with a focus on women soccer referees in Sweden The study's secondary aim is to describe the mental stress that referees can experience the time before the season starts, during the season, and off the field situations. Psychological demands for soccer referees are increasing because of the increasing media coverage and the possibilities for the audience to see replays of the decisions and the referee needs to adapt with that. More qualitative methods in research of referees and their career need to be written. . Research of women soccer referees are limited these days. A qualitative method of semi-structured interviews was used on seven women soccer referees with an age range from 19-32 years old. In this study it will be discussed how Swedish women referee experiences to ref men's soccer games. Furthermore it gives knowledge about how women referees can cope with pressure from external factors. An important conclusion that can be drawn from this study is that referees need support from colleagues, coaches and friends to cope with the psychological stress that comes from players and coaches on the soccer field.

Du får inte spela golf utan krage: En studie om golf och dess integrationsbarriärer2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In the Swedish society, sport is seen as a natural integration arena where ethnic minorities integrate intothe new society without losing their identity. The diversity varies greatly among the different sports, golfis one of the sports where diversity is almost totally absent. This study aims to examine how projects atvarious Swedish golf clubs promote the integration of youth immigrants through the sport. The first stepof the study consisted of surveys that formed the base of the study. In the second step, interviews cratedknowledge about golf clubs various work to promote integration in society. The results show that almostevery fourth golf club in Sweden was implementing or planning an integration project of some kind.Trough the study, it becomes clear that the barriers that must be torn down to make golf a naturalintegration arena, as sports in general, are numerous.

Miljöns betydelse för lusten att lära: En studie om den förberedda miljön inom montessoripedagogiken2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This study presents results from a project named The OVE-project (Orator Verbis Electris i.e. electric speech machine). The aim of this thesis is to describe and to evaluate a set of computer - programs based on synthetic speech. The programs are designed for training phonological awareness and are intended to be used as a remedial tool for children with reading and writing problems. During the evaluation and data-collecting period the project was economically and technically connected to the department of Speech, Music and Hearing at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. My associate, during this period, late Karoly Galyas has been in charge of the technical part of the project while I have been responsible for the content and the design of programs as well as for the evaluation and the assessment studies. The thesis has two overall aims. The first is to describe, analyze and discuss the development of a specific work process based on computer based supervising with synthetic speech feedback intended for children with reading and writing problems. The second overall aim is to describe, analyze and discuss the effect of the speech feedback and the specific work process on children with reading and writing problems. The evaluation and the data collection has been done within three different phases and consists of three training studies and two experimental studies: one text reproduction study and one spelling test study. The results showed very convincingly that the speech feedback had a positive effect on the pupils' self esteem. Activity and motivation were highly improved. A remarkable improvement of the pupils' ability to concentrate and persevere was observed. The results from the spelling test study showed high improvement rates when speech feedback in ongoing writing was used compared to handwriting and ordinary computer writing without speech feedback. The potentials of the synthetic speech feedback as a means to improve reading and writing skills is discussed.

    Abstract [en]

Background: Football is a sport defined by men for men. The number of performers is higher, men have better benefits and they get more attention than women. Additionally, the football referees are represented by men as well. In the current situation, there are 139 referees in football placed in Västerbotten. 18 are women and 121 are men, which means that women only represent 13 % of the referees in the county. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine which factors that contribute the fact that female football referees are few. Following research questions were stated: why do female referees quit? What obstacles and abilities do female referees face in their profession? What do they believe needs to be done to change the conditions in Swedish football to encourage women to become referees? Method: To conduct this study, a qualitative method of semi-structured interviews has been done. Six active and two non-active referees from Västerbotten and Västernorrland participated in this study. Result: The result indicated that female quit judging due to several reasons. For example, lack of support, insults and disrespectful treatment. Norms and perceptions about the woman make it hard for them to get respect and belief. Women also have to face sexual harassment. The respondents believe that right type of recruitment, specific female coaches, education for women and better support are solutions to attract more women to the profession.

Social Media and the Transnationalization of Mass Activism: Twitter and the labour movement2016In: First Monday, ISSN 1396-0466, E-ISSN 1396-0466, Vol. 21, no 8Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper explores the labour movement organization LabourStart, a digital initiative that, by various means such as e-mail campaigns and social media use, seeks to promote workers’ rights and to strengthen the labour movement on a global scale. The main aim of this study is to analyse a) how LabourStart employs Twitter for communication and organisation and b) how the Twitter-sphere that LabourStart constitutes — and is constituted by — is geographically structured. Our dataset consisted of all tweets containing the word “labourstart” and all tweets coming from or addressing any LabourStart–related account during the period 2008–2015. As theoretical points of departure, the notions of transnationalization/translocalism were used, in part together with the concept of connective action, to conceptualise the research. In terms of methodology, network analysis was the main approach employed to obtain and visualise the findings. Our results indicate that LabourStart’s Twitter use does not seem to have had any effects in terms of creating a decentralised transnational movement with translocal traits, thus suggesting that LabourStart has failed to fully make use of the connective features of Twitter and to establish a decentralized, transnational union movement. This, we suggest, is to some extent caused by LabourStart’s centralized organizational — and thus communicational — structure. In the concluding section, we interpret our findings in broader terms relating to the context and history of labour movements, and we discuss LabourStart’s work in relation to local and global worker issues.

Extending the local: activist types and forms of social media use in the case of an anti-mining struggle2017In: Social Movement Studies, ISSN 1474-2837, E-ISSN 1474-2829, Vol. 16, no 3, p. 309-322Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

As political activists increasingly use social media in local protests, scholars must redirect attention from large-scale campaigns to scrutinize the ways in which geographically confined actors use social media to engage in protests. This paper analyses how a 2013 anti-mining campaign in Kallak, Sweden, combined on-site resistance with social media strategies via Facebook-pages. The study examines which activist roles and forms of social media use that emerged and aims to explore what larger practical and theoretical implications one can derive from this specific case of place-based struggles. Results show that three typologically distinct activist roles emerged during the protests: local activists, digital movement intellectuals and digital distributors. These different types of actors were involved in four different forms of social media use: mobilization, construction of the physical space, extension of the local and augmentation of local and translocal bonds. Based on our findings, we argue that the coming together of these different activist roles and the different uses of social media added a translocal dimension to the peripheral and physically remote political conflict in Kallak. Media users were able to extend a locally and physically situated protest by linking it to a global contentious issue such as the mining boom and its consequences for indigenous populations.

Jobbcoachningens påverkan.: En studie om hur de arbetssökande har utvecklat sina kompetenser i att söka jobb.2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Könskodning i ledarskapsannonser: En jämförande studie mellan offentlig och privat sektor2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Evaluation, language, and untranslatables2017In: American Journal of Evaluation, ISSN 1098-2140, E-ISSN 1557-0878, Vol. 38, no 1, p. 114-125Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The issue of translatability is pressing in international evaluation, in global transfer of evaluative instruments, in comparative performance management, and in culturally responsive evaluation. Terms that are never fully understood, digested, or accepted may continue to influence issues, problems, and social interactions in and around and after evaluations. Their meanings can be imposed or reinvented. Untranslatable terms are not just “lost in translation” but may produce overflows that do not go away. The purpose of this article is to increase attention to the issue of translatability in evaluation by means of specific exemplars. We provide a short dictionary of such exemplars delivered by evaluators, consultants, and teachers who work across a variety of contexts. We conclude with a few recommendations: highlight frictions in translatability by deliberately circulating and discussing words of relevance that appear to be "foreign"; increase the language skills of evaluators; and make research on frictions in translation an articulate part of the agenda for research on evaluation.

    Abstract [en]

This study's main objective was to examine coaches and their attitudes towards nutrition, dietary supplements and health in relation to their athletes. The study also focused on relationship between coaches and their athletes, showed leadership and coaches influence processes. The study was a qualitative study that used interviews to collect data from the respondents. A total of eight interviews were performed. The results showed that leaders in different sports have different attitudes about dietary supplements. Where endurance athletes distinguished between protein and carbohydrate supplementation, vitamin and mineral  supplementation, and was therefore more acceptive against the type of supplementations which was more frequently used. Furthermore, a majority of the interviewed coaches believed that dietary supplementation was not neccessary if a balanced diet was consumed. Moreover, coaches can influence their athletes if they possess right traits, behaviours or are in the right situation.

    Abstract [en]

This study used qualitative methodology to investigate difficulties among people with hearing impairments and deaf people. The study included eight respondents (three people with hearing impairments and five deaf people). An interpreter was used during the interviews. The purpose of the study was to describe and analyse if people with hearing impairments experienced their exercising differentely than hearing people. The most common exercises among the respondents were walking, weight training and cycling/spinning. The respondents with hearing impairments did appreciate group activities with instructors rather than the deaf respondents that did appreciate weigth training and walking. Among the deaf respondents, factor of feeling good were the best motivation. Among the respondents with hearing impairments, to get in shape, were the best motivational factor. The results also showed that the respondents experienced a positive approach to exercising if people around promoted and supported them. If not, the approach to exercising became negative. The terms stigmatization, normalization and identity impregnate the study to explain the difficulties of the respondents exercising. In contrast with the exercising, the majority of the respondents aimed for a body image that were thinner than themselves. At the same time, the results showed that it was important to feel good within. Finally, the respondents asked for to be treated as equals – as people without disabilities – in the hearing world of exercise.

Education in a post-neoliberal era: a promising future for the Global South?2009In: Power and Education, ISSN 1757-7438, Vol. 1, no 2, p. 167-177Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article analyses the consequences of neoliberal thinking for education systems, particularly in the Global South. It considers the possibility of an intellectual meltdown following the economic meltdown and argues that a new post-neoliberal educational agenda is needed. The marketisation of education in the Global North and the doublespeak of the Education for All agenda in the Global South are used to illustrate the onslaught against educational ideals. However, the present situation can open up for a new start in education based on ideas fostering social justice and education as a craftsmanship for life, a usefulness beyond the classroom, a critical contextualised praxis and a narrative of a new and more human type of social development. It is argued that a post-neoliberal agenda along these ideas is urgently needed globally and that it has the potential to become particularly important for the creation of opportunities and initiatives in the Global South.

Post-apartheid teacher education reform in Namibia: the struggle between common sense and good sense2002Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis is about teacher education reform. It is a narrative of attempted change in the area of teacher education in post-apartheid Namibia. The inquiry is based on critical and participatory perspectives. The analytical tools include concepts like hegemony and counter-hegemony, common sense and good sense.

The historical and contextual analyses attend to the broad global layers of influence on a newly born African nation state, the prevailing common sense of financial and technical assistance agencies, and the modern school as it has landed in Namibia and elsewhere in Africa. It gives an overview of the historical deposits into the common sense about schooling and education in Namibia, including visions and practices of the liberation movement before independence. The teacher education reform is also placed within the international context of preferential views on teacher education.

The struggle over the preferential right of interpretation is described and analysed on three major levels: the policy level of an imperative reform framework, the level of the contested programme imprints, and on institutional level where attempts were made to create reform agency.

The teacher education reform was part of the post-apartheid policy that signalled an egalitarian society for all. The analyses give at hand that the reform was neither a defeat nor a victory. The combined effects of historical and parallel engravings affected the reform process and created a transposed reform out of the intellectual war of position over the preferential right of interpretation. The transposed reform had traits of both the hegemonic imprints and the counter-hegemonic reform policy and operated within a constraining and ahistorical political context. A future revival of the reform policy includes a critical literacy of pedagogy and a pedagogy of hope.

Research on pedagogical entrepreneurship: A literature review based on studies from Finland, Iceland and Sweden2016In: Education Inquiry, ISSN 2000-4508, E-ISSN 2000-4508, Vol. 7, no 2, p. 159-182, article id 30036Article, review/survey (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Strategies for entrepreneurship in the educational system are present not only in the Nordic countries, but also in the majority of other Western countries. Linked to these strategies different research efforts have been made. Although the research efforts have a common origin in supranational policies on entrepreneurship, there has been little research analysing the similarities and differences in how the topic is addressed by researchers in different countries. Being able to relate to both the policy and the available research in a nuanced way is important especially in the context of teacher education. The purpose of this article is to review the most recent research in pedagogical entrepreneurship from three countries: Finland, Iceland and Sweden. The aim is to discover whether the common phenomena of entrepreneurship in an educational context are approached differently in these three countries. The review of 21 articles in all, covering aim, method, concepts, references and results, draws a rather fragmented picture of the research. The main results are that the reviewed research was mostly qualitative and covered the entire spectrum from theoretical research to practice-oriented research. A variety of concepts were used. The analysis of the use of references uncovered a need to be more aware of including research from neighbouring regions. The research field seems to be quite lively and is still developing. However, it would benefit from a better dialogue between researchers in order to strengthen the contribution of Nordic research on pedagogical entrepreneurship.
