    Abstract [en]

Opinions about the symbolic value of the iron age keys found in graves differ amongst archaeologists. Keys found in graves have during a long time and amongst several archaeologists been seen as an expression of women's power over the households.

This paper highlights some examples of other interpretations of the iron age keys found in burials. It also highlights the differences and similarities amongst keys found within Scandinavia. The amount of and the contexts of keys found in Öland and the Mälardal region in Sweden are compared with papers about keys found in Gotland, Denmark and Norway. The main purpose of this paper is to put the iron age key in a bigger context by looking at the gender and the age of the individual buried with a key and to search for other contexts that connects the graves in Sweden, Norway and Denmark. This will make it able to understand the object's symbolism.

The keys are found in different types of burials during the time 0-1050 A.D. Of a total amount of 759 burials dated to 0-1050 A.D. in Öland only seven keys are found in seven burials. In Mälardalen 99 keys are found, the total amount of studied burials in the area are 1572. The keys are only found in female burials in Denmark and in both female and male burials in Sweden and Norway. In Sweden they also occur in children burials. These graves' denominator is that they contain keys; the type of burial, as well as grave gifts, may vary.

My thesis is that keys may have had different values in different geografic places where the cultural values differed. I believe that one have to put the iron age key in an bigger context to be able to understand its true meaning and that the tradition and symbolic purpose behind putting keys in graves differ from area to area.

My opinion is that the interpretation of the key as a symbol of women's power over the household is a result of traditional opinions about gender where women belonged to the private sphere, the household, and the men belonged to the public sphere. I argue that the keys may have had a christian symbolic value in some areas, and that they also could symbolise social, but not necessarily economic, status.

Utanför gränserna: En vetenskapshistorisk biografi om Astrid Cleve von Euler2012Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This dissertation is a scientific biography of Astrid Cleve von Euler. She was Sweden’s first female Ph.D. graduate in the natural sciences (1898) and pursued a scientific career in spite of formal and cultural limitations. Though she failed to secure a professional position as a scientist, she published numerous papers throughout her life. The dissertation studies her life in general and analyses her research in particular. How did her research change over time in relation to the rest of her life? How did established scientists receive her research? How did her status as a woman on the fringes of academia affect her research? Sociologist Thomas F. Gieryn’s concepts of boundary-work and credibility contests are important analytical tools in the interpretation of these questions, as Cleve’sresearch was regulated by various boundaries: between professionals and amateurs, between men and women and between different academic disciplines.

The study is divided into seven chapters. The first chapter introduces the dissertation, its objective and theoretical framework. The remaining chapters follow Cleve’s life in a chronological and sometimes thematic order and the source material is continually analysed. Chapter two accounts for Cleve’s childhood and student years in Uppsala, ending with her Ph.D. graduation. Chapter tree focuses on her research as a chemist and her ten years of marriage to a fellow researcher, Hans von Euler-Chelpin, a marriage that was closely intertwined with their academic studies. The fourth chapter studies Cleve’s controversy with some of the leading quaternary geologists in Sweden at the time, regarding the level changes of the Scandinavian land mass following the latest Ice Age. The fifth chapter diverges slightly from Cleve’s research, and investigates her undertakings in popular science and her political standpoints. Chapter six analyses her archaeological studies as part of the scientific controversy she was involved in, but also as influenced by political and religious views. Finally, the seventh chapter begins with a closer look at Cleve’s diatom studies, already part of most of the study but thus far not focused on as such, and ends with the main conclusions of the entire dissertation project.

The dissertation shows that while science was part of Cleve’s life from childhood to death, factors other than her personal desire to uncover scientific truths governed her research opportunities and the topics of her studies. While she was consistently highly regarded as a diatom expert and gained some success as a chemist, disciplines she was formally educated in, she was met with scepticism and eventually silence when she tried to make an impact in quaternary geology and archaeology, fields of research in which she had no formal training. This demonstrates a possibility to simultaneously be regarded as credible and non-credible as a scientist, as credibility is not necessarily attached to the individual, but to his or her formal expertise in a particular area.

Anticlericalism and early social democracy in Sweden in the 1880s2017In: Church History and Religious Culture, ISSN 1871-241X, Vol. 97, no 2, p. 248-266Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article examines early socialist anticlericalism directed against the clergy of the Church of Sweden in the late nineteenth century. Research on socialist critiques and the Church of Sweden is generally lacking, and no attempt has been made to interpret the critique using the concept of anticlericalism. This study analyses the Social Democrats’ official newspaper Socialdemokraten and demonstrates that socialist anticlericalism was focused on clerical lifestyles, the church as a class institution, and often religion itself. A critical analysis of the arguments reveals that the satire and exaggeration already familiar to many were commonly used in anticlerical rhetoric when describing the clergy. The ultimate aim of the critique was the abolition of the Established Church because it was considered to provide a conservative religious ideology for the state.

Caricatures of clergymen in nineteenth-century Sweden2013In: European Review of History, ISSN 1350-7486, E-ISSN 1469-8293, Vol. 20, no 3, p. 479-500Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article investigates caricatures of clergymen in the nineteenth-century Church of Sweden. It offers the first attempt in Sweden to study these images as an enduring historical source. As case study, six caricatures of bishops from 1790–1870 will be analysed in terms of both their motifs and their significance. The bishops have been selected as the object of study because of their visibility as ex officio members of Parliament and leaders of the clergy. It is argued that graphic satire was used as a medium to criticise the bishops’ influential position in the government and their defence of the Parliament of the Estates. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that as the techniques used to produce caricatures improved during the period, the images were more widely spread and had a greater impact on Swedish society. Finally, it is shown that caricature in Sweden reached a peak in the middle of the nineteenth century thanks to the extended debate on parliamentary reform and restrictions on press freedom.

Classroom wall charts and Biblical history: a study of educational technology in elementary schools in late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Sweden2014In: Paedagogica historica, ISSN 0030-9230, E-ISSN 1477-674X, Vol. 50, no 5, Special Issue, p. 668-684Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article considers the emergence of classroom wall charts as a teaching technology in Swedish elementary schools in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, using Biblical history teaching as an example. There has been some work done internationally on wall charts as an instructional technology, but few studies have looked at their use in Sweden. With a theoretical approach informed by Martin Lawn’s understanding of teaching technologies, this article shows that wall charts became both an important teaching object and a means of introducing new pedagogical ideas. A study of the official school inspectors’ reports shows that wall charts had spread to most local schools by the end of the nineteenth century, while an analysis of Biblical history textbooks and teaching guidelines shows that visual aids were increasingly integrated into the school curriculum. The wall charts themselves were initially imported, mainly from Germany, but by the end of the nineteenth century they were being produced in Sweden for the domestic market, in keeping with the National Romantic ideals of the day as well as with the new awareness of the importance of adapting images to use in classroom teaching.

History, nation and school inspections: the introduction of citizenship education in elementary schools in late nineteenth-century Sweden2015In: History of Education, ISSN 0046-760X, E-ISSN 1464-5130, Vol. 44, no 3, p. 259-273Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

It was in the late nineteenth century that teaching in Sweden?s elementary schools began its transformation from a religious education to a broader, national citizenship education that included history and geography. International research has pointed to a connection between the introduction of school inspections and the reform of public education during this period. In Sweden, however, the practice of inspection has not been explored at any length. This article therefore considers the part played by school inspections in the implementation of a more extensive curriculum in Swedish elementary schools in the period 1860?1900, with a particular focus on the subject of history, using a study of inspection reports from the diocese of Uppsala. It is argued that school inspectors had a key role in initiating reform at the local level, but also that the move towards broader-based citizenship education was not a simple, straightforward process.

    Abstract [en]

Conflict archaeology is a newly emerged field in archaeology. My purpose with this study is toexamine what kind of information it actually can provide regarding history. The main focus are onthe World War II German soldiers in Tulliniemi transition camp in Hanko. My choice of subject isbased in the fact that there are, for understandably reasons, only little knowledge of the everydaylife of German soldiers in Finland. This is done by focusing on the objects found in Tulliniemi andthe possible stories behind them. My study of different objects is done by analyzing, theorizing andidentifying them. This study shows that an object is more than just a physical form. It can tell usabout soldiers enjoyments, what they do on their free time and the traces war leaves in everydayobjects. These objects are the key to a more detailed perspective of the different aspects in war.

    Abstract [en]

This work examines the discussion that precedes the name change for maids in Sweden. In1917 the labor union club for maids called Stockholms tjänarinneförening changes its name toHembiträdesföreningen i Stockholm. Over time, hembiträde slowly replaces tjänarinna as thecommon name for maids. Through a conceptual history approach the study wishes to shinelight upon the ideas about titels found in printed sources preceding the name change. Thesource material consists of newspapers, articles in periodicals as well as printed books on thesubject. In addition to the conceptual history approach, social categories are used as a way ofmaking titles, found in the source material, comprehensible from a historical perspective. Also, Ferdinand Tönnies two concepts Gemeinschaft and Gesellschaft is used to analyzedifferent view on historical change, in relation to the maid occuptation, found in the sourcematerial. An overarching question in the work is: what kind of value can be achieved througha name change of this kind?

    Abstract [en]

This study examines how two writers deal with demonic possession and exorcism in their written works that both have a common theme, the same alleged case of possession and exorcism. By comparing these written works I explore if the authors share any common or varying theories on possession and exorcism and investigate if the common theme of the two books has contributed to the authors writing similar books. My results show that the two authors deal with demonic possession and exorcism differently, one has theological views of the phenomena but is sceptical of their role in the alleged case, whilst the other believes that demonic possession and exorcism can be explained using scientific theories and that they are phenomena that played a part in the alleged case. The two books are quite different. I conclude that both writers’ theories of the phenomena are dependent on the existence of the phenomenon of religion.

From Mixed Choir to Worship Team. Historical and Theological Perspectives on Song Groups in the Swedish Free Churches

The study gives an overview of different types of choirs in the Free Churches in Sweden, especially in the Baptist Union. The aim is to discuss the ecclesial character of choirship, a concept that is introduced here, and to present a deeper understanding of it as a fundamental expression of being church. The underlying hypothesis is that different kinds of choirship create different kinds of ecclesial communities. And vice versa: different kinds of ecclesial communities create different kinds of choirship.

From the more than 160 year old history of Baptist choirs in Sweden the study identifies and discusses theologically five different choirships: mixed choirs singing SATB, string bands and choirs, revival campaign choirs, youth choirs/gospel choirs, struggle song choirs, and worship (or song) teams. Other types, such as men’s choirs and children’s choirs, are also mentioned. The study makes comparisons between the choirs in the Baptist Union and other Free Churches, especially the Mission Covenant Church and the Pentecostals. An important aspect of the study is also the cultural and socio-political context of the choirships. The choirs’ musical styles and genres both reflect and contrast with the traditions, trends and fashions of society.

Different elements in the choirship are revealed and analysed: the organisation of the choir, the spirituality of the choirship and its ecclesial community, the different musical styles, the role of choirship in the liturgy, the conductor, the message in the song texts and the frequency of rehearsal and performance. The study shows that the practice of choirship includes an ongoing evaluation of two distinct aspects of this art: form and content. The history of the Baptist choirs addresses the challenge of keeping form and content together.

Vi kan om ni vill.: En studie om muslimska flickors möjligheter att nå målen i idrott & hälsa.2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Environmental histories of design: towards a new research agenda2017In: Journal of Design History, ISSN 0952-4649, E-ISSN 1741-7279, Vol. 30, no 2, p. 103-121Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Design and designers hold an ambiguous place in contemporary environmental discourse. They can easily be blamed for causing environmental problems but may also be said to possess some of the competences that could help solve those problems. Design is a fundamental part of the world, where rapidly emerging concepts such as the Anthropocene challenge the distinction between the human-made (or artificial) on the one side and what is not made by human hands (or natural), on the other. Despite the long-standing centrality of design to environmental discourse, and vice versa, deep and systematic ‘environmental histories of design’ are few and far between. While environmental historians have increasingly explored technology, consumption, and material culture as active agents in discourses of environmental change, they seldom explicitly incorporate design or designers into their studies. At the same time, design history faces a major challenge in accounting for environmental concerns in the history of design discourse. This special issue explores the common ground emerging at the intersection of these two fields of inquiry, with the aim of establishing mutually beneficial understandings upon which to build a new interdisciplinary research agenda.

Att tolka det tillbörliga och det otillbörliga2011In: Perspektiv på islam / [ed] Susanne Olsson & Simon Sorgenfrei, Stockholm: Dialogos , 2011, 1, p. 47-53Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

Barmhärtighet: Respekten för människans person2012In: Dygdernas renässans / [ed] Eva Österberg, Marie Lindstedt Cronberg & Catharina Stenqvist, Stockholm: Bokförlaget Atlantis, 2012, 1, p. 155-187Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Changing perceptions of the Western form of Government in Islamic Thought2013In: New Agendas in Statebuilding: Hybridity, Contingency and History / [ed] Robert Egnell & Peter Haldén, London, New York: Routledge, 2013, 1, p. 143-167Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The Muslim view of Europe and the West and the reception given in Muslim countries to political reforms which have their roots in Western traditions of political ideas have varied in the extreme in modern times. The difference in reception has depended on circumstances such as the nature of the encounters between Muslim countries and European and Western states, the degree of insight into these political reforms on the part of the political and intellectual elite in Muslim countries, the models employed for introducing the reforms, and what happened in those countries which tried to implement them.

One must add to the above the actions of the European and Western states, which gave priority to their own geopolitical and economic interests above the development of democracy in Muslim countries – an approach which aligned the West with despotic rulers in the Muslim world who did everything either to prevent a transition to constitutional and democratic government or to undermine the implementation of such reforms.

The aim of this article is to depict the changing perceptions regarding the Western style of political government prevailing in Muslim countries in modern times.

Den arabiska våren: folkets uppror i Mellanöstern och Nordafrika2013 (ed. 1)Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]
