    Abstract [en]

    This article analyses the intertextuality of a chapter of the book Gamla byar i Vilhelmnina (Old Villages in Vilhelmina), by folklore scholar Olof Petter Pettersson. It illustrates how the work is a many-voiced and hence sometimes complex text, with much to tell us about the colonisation of Swedish Lapland. 

    Alongside a neutral narrative voice, it is possible to make out intertextual references by Pettersson to traditional knowledge of various kinds. There are references, for example, to names in use at the time the author was writing, sometimes linked to a specific geographical area or thnic group. Other instances that are discussed include the written texts cited by Pettersson, which reflect the strict legal and economic perspective of the state, and references to early legends and names used in the past, which the author often traces to old Sami oral traditions.

    It also emerges that Pettersson alternates between conveying folk traditions and knowledge, on the one hand, and a more analytical mode of writing, on the other.

    Abstract [en]

    Proverb meaning has been an issue in paremiological research for a long time. In this paper the cognitive linguistic theory of conceptual blending, or blending theory, is explored as a starting point in the discussion of figurative proverbs. This theory is combined here with the notion of ‘base meaning’. Furthermore, the concept of ‘extended base meaning’ is introduced as a ‘thick’ meaning description, especially useful when proverbs are discussed in relation to collective knowledge structures.

    Abstract [en]

    In this article, we take a narrative approach to Swedish media texts regarding farming, forestry, and Sami livelihoods. The main purpose is to illuminate how a master narrative on climate change is shaped, activated, and put into practice in different ways in different settings and contexts. The study discusses the complex interplay between different levels of narratives and the narrative dynamics that influence and shape collective representations of climate change. We discern a narrative level that does not explicitly challenge the master narrative, but operationalizes it in close relation to cultural contexts and specific goals, resulting in what we call conventionalized narratives.

    Making Sami place-names visible in Sweden: guidelines, practice and ways forward

    In this article, the authors illuminate the process in Sweden when a Sami place-name is considered for inclusion in the official place-name database, which in turn is a prerequisite for the name being made visible in the linguistic landscape through its use on road signs. Based on some problematic aspects of the current process, the authors argue for a revised set of guidelines for working with Sami place-names in Sweden, taking into account the colonial history and ongoing revitalization efforts. Furthermore, it is proposed that increased local participation in place-name processes could be beneficial to the work of finding the right name form, and to gain support from the name users.

    Vargdebatten talar sitt tydliga språk och delar upp människor; vissa är för vargjakt och andra är mot vargjakt. Denna undersökning studerade vad språket de olika sidorna av debatten verkligen realiserar genom att utföra textanalyser på debattinlägg. Undersökningen utfördes genom en bakgrundskontroll av skribenterna (noterade vad skribenten signerade sitt inlägg med), vilka röster som hörs genom inlägget (även en analys av värdeord och talarattityd ingick här), vilken modalitet inläggen uttrycker (interpersonell analys), vilka processer som finns (ideationell analys, och här ingick även ergativitetsanalys), och till sist även en analys av känsloord och fackord. Detta blev en för stor studie men sammanfattningsvis kan sägas att alla debattinlägg som ingick i denna analys var dialogiska och lät flera personers röster höras. Förespråkarsidan visade flest prov på talarattityd och använde bl.a. det som ett redskap för att hävda sin rätt att uttala sig i frågan. Det var även förespråkarsidan som visade sig vara mer dominant/hård, bl.a. eftersom skribenterna ofta belägger andra med förpliktelse och uppvisar färre prov på villighet. Varg framställs oftast som jägare i båda sidors debattinlägg och båda sidorna spelar betydligt mer på fakta än känslor för att övertyga.

    Syftet med vår studie är att ur ett sociokulturellt perspektiv undersöka och analysera hur lärare menar att de skapar läslust hos elever och framför allt hos elever med ett annat modersmål än svenska. För att kunna besvara vårt syfte har vi utfört halvstrukturerade intervjuer med sex lärare. Dessa intervjuer spelades in på band för att sedan transkriberas och kategoriseras. För att kunna analysera resultatet har vi tagit del av svensk och internationell forskning om läslust och modersmål. Denna forskning visar att skönlitteratur bidrar till att skapa läslust och att utveckling av modersmål gynnar andraspråksinlärningen. Förutom forskning i dessa ämnen har vi även tagit del av beprövad erfarenhet och genomförda projekt. En insikt som vi fått genom vår studie är att skönlitteratur kan användas som ett arbetssätt med många möjligheter och som gynnar alla elever oavsett kulturell och språklig bakgrund. Resultatet visar att de intervjuade lärarna arbetar på samma sätt med att skapa läslust hos alla sina elever. Dessutom visar resultatet att de intervjuade lärarna har ringa kunskaper i vad forskning säger om modersmålets betydelse för fortsatt språkutveckling. Förutom detta visar resultatet att bearbetning av litteratur skiljer sig avsevärt åt mellan de olika lärarna. En ytterligare insikt som vi fått under vår studie är vikten av att eleverna får möjlighet att bearbeta litteratur tillsammans med andra för att ta del av andras erfarenheter och upplevelser av det lästa.

    Abstract [en]

    The present study evaluates test results of oral and written production for a group of 15-16year-old Swedish L2-learners of Spanish in an instructional setting. The test results are evalu- ated according to the Swedish grade descriptors for the tested level and the descriptors of theCommon European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). It is shown that thesubjects generally perform better in writing than in speaking. This result is valid both withrespect to the Swedish descriptors and the CEFR scale ratings. The results are discussed inrelation to the conditions for learning an L2 in a formal instructional setting with little exposureto the target language outside the school context. A possible dominance of writing-basedactivities in the classroom and a low degree of extramural exposure are suggested aspossible explanatory factors to the results.

    Based on previous research, this paper aims to provide thefirst stepstowards a model for the teaching of Spanish prosody to Swedishlearners by identifying main prosodic characteristics, referred to asCoreProsodic Features(CPFs), for the teaching of Spanish in a Swedish setting.The study addresses salient prosodic features of L1 Spanish in comparisonto L1 Swedish, and discusses whether the Swedish L1 features are likely tobe transferred into L2 Spanish. Another central issue of the paper iswhether such transfer is likely to interfere with communication. ThreeProsodic Core Features are identified: (1) focal-accent location, (2) vowelduration patterns, and (3) prosodic patterns in rising boundary tones.

    Abstract [en]

    The paper investigates possible communicative effects caused by transfer from Swedish into L2 Spanish of prosodic patterns manifested in rising boundary tones, as occurring in the speech act of "requests". More specifically it studies whether there is any difference between transactional (+/-request for information) and interpersonal values (+/-value of friendliness) perceived in boundary tones produced in EL1, EL2 and SL1, depending on whether the evaluator is Spanish, Chilean or Swedish respectively. It also discusses whether these differences affect the valuation of the utterance in a way that may interfere with communication. The results show that the realisation of the rising boundary tones is the feature that mostly contributes to the foreign accent of Spanish spoken by Swedes. The results also show that the intersubjective value associated with a rising boundary tone is negatively affected when the intonational features of L2 Spanish do not match those of Spanish L1. Different discursive preferences in the Spanish and Swedish L1 are proposed as explanations to these results. The study finally suggests that teachers of Spanish as L2 pay attention to suprasegmental features that carry important pragmatic values, since the acquisition of these patterns can be of relevance for successful interaction with native speakers.

    Efectos pragmáticos de transferencias prosódicas del sueco al español L2: implicaciones para la clase de español lengua extranjera2015Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    This thesis sets out to identify a series of communicatively important prosodic features for the teaching of Spanish in a Swedish context. The present work also aims to highlight both the central role played by prosody in communication and the need for this skill to be integrated in the communicative competences of second language teaching and learning. The thesis comprises a collection of five studies, three of which use an experimental approach to investigate the following: (a) differences in the realization of prosodic prominence by L2 and L1 speakers of Spanish (Study I); (b) the transfer of pragmatic strategies from L1 Swedish to L2 Spanish, manifested in the realization of rising boundary tones (Study II); and (c) the contribution of the type of L2 prosody displayed by Swedish learners to a percieved foreign accent, focusing, focusing especially on the role played by rising boundary tones and their pragmatic values  (Study III). These initial studies describe some of the main prosodic characteristics of the L2 product as compared to Spanish L1, and identify prosodic features of Spanish L1 that are of importance to acquire for interactional success in the L2. Study IV highlights the fact that, despite the emphasis on a communicative approach in L2 teaching, the approach to the teaching of prosody in the Swedish curriculum and the L2 Spanish text books studied tends to be addressed as a separate skill, that is not integrated in the descriptions of the communicative competences. Study V, by combining the results of Studies I-III with those of other thematically relevant studies, proposes some main features, so-called Core Prosodic Features (CPFs), for the teaching of Spanish prosody to Swedish learners. The identification of the CPFs also enables a future evaluation of the form-focused teaching approach suggested.

    En aspekt av språkundervisning som ofta glöms bort är tillägnandet av språkets prosodi, d v s hur man ska uttala övergripande ljudsekvenser med målspråkslika betoningsmönster och en målspråkslik användning av stigningar och fall i tonhöjd. Under 70-talet sades det att den delen av språktillägnandet inte var så viktig att öva på, att prosodin faller på plats ”automatiskt”. Även inom den kommunikativa synen på språkundervisning som tog över under åttiotalet och fortfarande dominerar, har uttalsundervisning haft låg prioritet. Ett argument som brukar framföras när det gäller uttalsundervisning är att det inte är så nödvändigt att ägna sig åt prosodi, eftersom en talare av ett främmande språk har rätt att behålla sin identitet i form av sin främmande brytning, ja, enligt Kjellin, 2000, skulle det rent av vara kränkande för eleven att uppmanas att träna bort sin accent!

    Men hur står det egentligen till med detta? Lär sig eleverna det främmande språkets prosodi automatiskt? Och om de inte gör det, spelar deras accent någon roll för hur de blir uppfattade när de kommunicerar på det främmande språket? När det gäller spanska som främmande språk så är den målgrupp eleverna kommer att ha kontakt med till större delen infödda talare av språket. Sålunda är de infödda språkvarieteterna rimliga att sträva mot. Där skiljer sig spanska, tyska och franska från engelska, där den infödda modellen kanske är mindre central, eftersom språket i stor utsträckning även används som internationellt kommunikations medel. I min forskning har jag studerat kommunikativa effekter av svenska elevers prosodiska mönster i spanska, samt hur prosodi uppmärksammas i våra styrdokument och läromedel, och det är det senare jag tänkt att denna artikel framför allt ska handla om.

    Det är väl känt att språklig kompetens är sammansatt av flera olika färdigheter somkan befinna sig på olika nivåer. När elevers provresultat sammanställs kan elevernasprofiler därför vara mer eller mindre ”taggiga”, där taggig betyder att det finns starkare och svagare sidor hos samma elev i de olika språkliga färdigheterna (begreppethar använts av till exempel Erickson och Börjesson, 2001). Våra svenska styrdokument delar in främmande språk i underkategorierna receptiva och produktiva färdigheter, där receptiv kompetens beskrivs utifrån förmåga att läsa och lyssna och produktiv kompetens utifrån färdigheterna skriva och tala och samtala. Jag vill här delgeer resultat från en forskningsstudie (Aronsson, 2020) som handlar om elevnivåer ispanska som språkval efter årskurs 9 i de produktiva färdigheterna skriva och tala(interagera). Jag kommer att fokusera på och utvidga det nationella perspektivet.

    The aim of the present paper is to highlight the central role that prosody plays for communication and to motivate the attention that arguably should be given to prosody within the foreign language classroom. The paper presents an overview of research addressing the communicative aspects of prosody, particularly focussing on L2 prosody and how classroom practice could be informed by current research. It also addresses bias from written language as one of the main explanations to the lack of attention paid to prosody in the language classroom and aims to highlight prosodic aspects of oral language that are not so much found in writing and that, due to our strong tradition of teaching languages through writing, run the risk of being forgotten. Spanish as a foreign language in a Swedish educational setting is focused upon, and the frameworks used to guide teachers’ practice, the CEFR and the curriculum, together with textbooks currently used in this setting, are analysed.

    Would prosodic transfer from Swedish L1 into Spanish L2 have any effects on communication with native Spanish speakers? The study investigates the contribution to the perceived foreign accent of the L2 prosody displayed by Swedish learners, focusing especially on the role played by rising boundary tones and their pragmatic values. Swedish L1, Spanish L1 and Spanish L2 data, analysed acoustically by Aronsson and Fant (2014), were evaluated in perception experiments with native speakers of Spanish and Swedish and the results show that the intersubjective value associated with a rising boundary tone differs depending on whether the evaluator is a native speaker of Swedish or Spanish, and that the transferred patterns not only contribute to a foreign accent, they are also capable of affecting pragmatic values.

    Abstract [en]

    The pragmatic functions of pitch at tone unit boundaries are studied in L2 Spanish spoken by Swedish learners, as compared to L1 Swedish and L1 Spanish. The data are recordings of a task in which the subjects - 10 learners of Spanish and 13 native controls - make a restaurant booking on the phone in Spanish, and the Swedish subjects also perform this task in their L1. The tone unit boundary rises and falls produced have been analyzed with special focus on rises and their accompanying vowel duration patterns. The turn-regulating functions of signaling turn-continuation vs. transition-relevance are contrasted with intersubjectivity-regulating signals, namely (non-) prompts for information and ( non-) prompts for interpersonal acceptance. Since open-ended yes/no-questions are signaled by rises in Spanish, though not in Swedish, and since declaratives carrying a positive politeness value tend to end in rises (the "tail flick") in Swedish, though not in Spanish, various types of potential negative transfer could be predicted for Swedish learners' L2 Spanish. It is shown that L1 Spanish speakers consistently use moderate rises for turn-keeping and high rises for information-seeking, and that this pattern has no equivalence in the L2 Spanish data. Conversely, rises in L2 Spanish frequently occur where L1 Spanish speakers prefer falls. These rises, interpreted as "tail flicks,"also occur in L1 Swedish, but they are far more frequent in the L2 Spanish data. Thus, clear transfer patterns are found, which are further reinforced by - insecurity effects due to L2 speaking.

    Abstract [en]

    This study analyzes the function of the Swedish gender-neutral pronoun hen with the purpose of examining how the word is used today. Aside from being used as a gender-neutral pronoun, hen is also used in other syntactical functions as well as gender-transcending functions. The study material consists of texts from daily press that have been analyzed through a quantitative method. The various uses of hen have been categorized by function and text type. The theoretical part of the study introduces language planning, feminist language planning, and the origins of hen. The results of the study indicate that hen mainly fills a syntactical function in daily press, as 143 out of 167 uses of the word were in functions that can be categorized as syntactical. The most common function of hen found in the material was hen in generic reference. Hen was used in 15 different text types within daily press, most commonly in articles and columns. In articles, hen in generic reference was most common, while in columns most of the found hen were used in a concealing function.

    I föreliggande examensarbete undersöks hur lättläst en lättläst text är. För detta görs en analytisk undersökning av en svensk kommuns webbsida och dess lättlästa version beträffande struktur, innehåll och läsbarhet. Sedan jämförs analysernas resultat. Den lättlästa textens användbarhet undersöks genom en empirisk undersökning, en enkät, i en SFI-klass, vilken är en del av mottagargrupperna i behov av lättlästa texter. Undersökningen visar att den lättlästa texten i teorin är lättare att förstå. Detta resultat kan dock inte styrkas i enkätundersökningen. Den lättlästa texten visar sig vara för svår för mottagargruppen. Officiella riktlinjer för att skriva lättläst och mer forskning inom detta område behövs för en ökad tillgänglighet för människor som behöver lättlästa texter, vilket är mer än var femte person.

    Abstract [en]

    Sami are Indigenous languages spoken by the Sami people in the northern parts of Scandinavia and Russia. All Sami languages are endangered because of historically aggressive assimilation policies. Currently Sami communities are working actively with language revitalisation processes. This article examines pupils’ access to knowledge in and about Sami languages and functional bilingualism in Sami and Swedish within the curriculum for the Sami schools in Sweden. Through a multifaceted lens of functional linguistic analysis, Bloom’s revised taxonomy of knowledge types and processes, and Bernstein’s concepts of vertical and horizontal discourse we examine the learning outcomes in the Sami and Swedish syllabi. The findings show an unequal balance between the two languages with the Sami syllabus containing fewer knowledge types, cognitive processes, verb processes, a stronger focus on oracy, and a stronger horizontal discourse than the Swedish syllabus. We conclude that the discourses about functional bilingualism that underpin these policy documents is contradictory and does not support Sami to be a fully functional language for all domains of society.

    I denna undersökning granskas tre beslutsmallar från Uppsala kommun för att bedöma i vilken grad de efterföljer språklagens direktiv om att språket i myndighetstexter ska vara vårdat, enkelt och begripligt. Genom att kombinera läsbarhetsanalys med komparativ analys utvärderas besluten i relation till klarspråksprinciper. Resultaten pekar på varierande styrkor och svagheter i beslutsmaterialet. Även om språket över lag är vårdat, konstateras det att det finns svagheter när det gäller enkelhet och begriplighet. Analysen identifierar potentiella förbättringsområden, särskilt gällande ordval och förkortningar som inte förklaras. Även den grafiska utformningen och anpassningen till olika målgrupper framstår som utmanande aspekter i beslutsmaterialet. I diskussionen lyfts svårigheterna med att objektivt bedöma texters svårighetsgrad fram och betonas vikten av att förstå målgruppen för att effektivt tillämpa klarspråksprinciper. Avslutningsvis föreslår studien några åtgärder som kan förbättra klarspråket i beslut, bland annat genom en översyn av befintliga textmallar och granskning av externa parter för att säkerställa en övergripande förståelse. Denna forskning bidrar till förståelsen av klarspråksutmaningar inom offentliga beslut och pekar på behovet av ytterligare forskning för att stärka klarspråksarbetet, bland annat i avseende på samspelet mellan tryckt och digital text.

    It is not until the fourteenth century that written records offer a glimpse into the coastal societies of Northern Sweden. Records include references to a social stratum referred to as the birkarlar, who were tradesmen engaged in trading with the Sami. The origin of the birkarlar, their prominent status and the meaning of the term, is an enigma that has been much disputed among scholars although there is consensus about the economic and fiscal supremacy of birkarlar vis-a-vis the Sami. However, the paradox of tradesmen employing force against their most important circle of suppliers and customers remains a puzzle. The birkarla institution is analyzed by means of alternative reading of historical records from the perspective of the indigenous Sami and coastal farming communities. The postulated animosity between Sami and the birkarlar is critically examined in light of the social and economic context of interior and coastal communities during the Late Iron Age and Early Medieval period, and in relation to historically known Sami kinship relationships and marriage traditions. Data are analyzed with regard to demography and social structure, and from a landscape perspective including the logistics and practicalities of inter-cultural contact. Analyses corroborate that birkarlar were deeply rooted in the coastal communities and fully involved in the regular subsistence activities. They were representatives given a commission of trust and contacts between the birkarlar and the Sami were characterized by mutuality and inter-dependence.

    It is shown that a real novel shares many characteristic features with a null model in which the words are randomly distributed throughout the text. Such a common feature is a certain translational invariance of the text. Another is that the functional form of the word-frequency distribution of a novel depends on the length of the text in the same way as the null model.This means that an approximate power-law tail ascribed to the data will have an exponent which changes with the size of the text-section which is analyzed.A further consequence is that a novel cannot be described by text-evolution models like the Simon model.The size-transformation of a novel is found to be well described by a specific Random Book Transformation.This size transformation in addition enables a more precise determination of the functional form of the word-frequency distribution.The implications of the results are discussed.

    I den här uppsatsen behandlas det könsneutrala pronomenet hen, som har debatterats livligt under 2012. Tidigare studier har visat att ordet främst är etablerat i hbtq- och feministkretsar och att det framför allt fyller en funktion i att problematisera kön. Uppsatsens syfte är att närmare beskriva betydelser och funktioner för ordet hen samt att undersöka huruvida ordet i dag förekommer i kontexter som inte är direkt knutna till feministisk eller hbtq-relaterad verksamhet.

    Uppsatsens teoridel behandlar feministisk språkteori och språkvårdsteori, främst enligt Cameron (1992) och Pauwels (1998; 2003). Här redogörs också för bakgrunden till ordet hen samt några av de queerteoretiska och skrivtekniska motiv som har anförts för att införa ett könsneutralt pronomen.

    I studien analyseras användningen av hen i 100 bloggtexter och 100 tidnings­texter, dvs. 200 belägg, från hösten 2012 utifrån morfosyntaktiska, funktionella och kontextuella perspek­tiv. Resultaten pekar på att hen i första hand används som personligt köns­neutralt pronomen för både generisk och unik referens samt för personer med en problem­atiserad köns­identitet. En ytterligare funktion är att hen kan fungera person­ifi­erande för djur, väsen och inanimata samt användas i överförd betydelse för att beteckna köns­neutralitet eller genusmedvetenhet. Resultaten tyder också på att hen används i tid­nings­texter och bloggar även utanför en uttalat feministisk och politisk kontext. Detta tolkar jag som att den starka politiska laddning som präglat hen börjar försvagas och att pronomenet rör sig mot en mer allmänspråkligt och neutral användning.

    Abstract [en]

    The use of English words in Italian has been an active phenomenon for centuries. Opinions diverge whether this is a positive part of a natural linguistic evolution in a globalized world, or a linguistic breakdown to be avoided at all cost. In the present study, the history of anglicisms in Italian language will be examined, as well as modern day characteristics of Anglo-Saxon influence and adaptation on the Italian peninsula. The result is a colorful portrait of an Italian language in movement, with anglicisms being part of the linguistic field in both the written and spoken contemporary language. The view of the Accademia della Crusca, the Italian academy for linguistic preservation, is explored, as well as some potential social factors contributing to this form of linguistic innovation.

    The sagas of Icelanders contain a great wealth of personal names both of historical and fictional nature. Personal names function both as identifiers for individuals but also evoke associations that supersede the name’s lexical or identifying meaning, for example, cultural or social associations such as age, ethnicity, and ideology. This article examines personal names as a source within a source and appraises the use of literary and socio-onomastics in the context of the Íslendingasögur using the example of the elusive difference between “Icelanders” and “Norwegians” in the sagas. The onomastic analysis is based on seven shorter tales and explores the differences in personal names in Icelandic and Norwegian individuals. Based on the onomastic data gathered, this article concludes that there are certain regional differences in name-giving visible in the sagas and that saga authors either had authentic onomastic material at hand or tried to emulate realistic personal names.

    Abstract [en]

    The aim of this master’s degree essays is to analyse and compare the first-contact situations and means of communication as described in four different sagas including Legendary Sagas and Sagas of Icelanders, more specifically Vínlandsagas. Two additional papers on contacts and communication with indigenous people from the perspectives of Spanish conquistadores and Brittish settlers in Australia were reviewed to establish a baseline for behaviour in contact situations with unknown peoples. The analysis of both sagas and additional sources shows that neither of them focus in their description on communications tools and instead focus on the different behaviour of the indigenous people as observed by the settlers and conquistadores and on the actions and transactions with the indigenous peoples.

    Abstract [en]

    The Íslendingasögur provide a great wealth of personal names, both of historical and possibly fictional nature, which allows for an examination of historical and literary name-giving practices before and during the saga-writing age. Prosoponyms – personal names – in Old Norse sources have only been studied to a limited extent and very rarely in the context of the Íslendingasögur, which is surprising given the sheer amount of personal names mentioned in the Sagas.

    Personal names do not only function as identifiers for individuals but also serve as mirrors of the society and culture using them. Personal names are reflections of the community that gives these names to individuals. As such, these personal names can express family ties and affiliations to a certain group of people, and both individual and communal identity. It is therefore worth examining the personal names in the Íslendingasögur from the perspective of socio-onomastics to explore the social, cultural and identity related implications of name-giving traditions and practices, especially in the context of Icelandic identity. 

    The Íslendingasögur often denote an elusive difference in Scandinavian/Norwegian and Icelandic identity and naming traditions are not to be forgotten as a contributing factor of these differences in perceived identity. 

    A socio-onomastic analysis of the personal names mentioned in the Íslendingasögur has not only the potential for further insight into the sense of community and Icelandic identity during the saga-writing age but also furthers the advancement of historical and literary socio-onomastics in the field of Old Norse Studies.

    Typologies have been proposed to organise Inuit placenames in several categories based on the meaning of and glosses on the names. One possible category gathers those toponyms that are related to beings that are neither human nor animal (“other-than-animal non-human beings”). In Nunavut and Nunavik (Canadian Eastern Arctic), this category is used quantitatively to name an almost insignificant number of sites. On the other hand, however, such particular place-names are to be found all over the lands inhabited by Inuit, witnessing the “other” nature of this space by comparison to the space commonly frequented by people and animals.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this study is to investigate the metaphorization of ROMANTIC LOVE in spoken Swedish. The study is based on 4 semi-structured focus group conversations with participants in two age groups; 24–33 and 50–54. A Swedish short film and questions related to the film were used as stimuli for the conversations. Research questions asked are 1) How is the concept of ROMANTIC LOVE metaphorized in the recorded group conversations? 2) How does the metaphorization vary between the conversations? and 3) What cultural model for ROMANTIC LOVE in the conversations can be reconstructed based on identified metaphorizations? The study is situated within Cognitive Linguistics and the framework of Conceptual Metaphor Theory and a Discourse Dynamics Approach to Metaphor. Consequently, metaphor is seen as a cognitive, linguistic, socio-cultural and discursive phenomenon, where metaphorization is a dynamic process that develops, adapts and flows within the conversations and between the participants. Accordingly, the identified metaphorizations are considered to be influenced by the speakers and their embodied experiences, their embodied cognition, the discourse event, and socio-cultural aspects of metaphorization. The focus of the present study, ROMANTIC LOVE, is considered as a dynamic concept based on philosophical, feminist, psychological and metaphorical research. Metaphors are identified through a discourse dynamic version of MIP and MIPVU.

    From the analyses, 6 systematic metaphors are proposed, where ROMANTIC LOVE is metaphorized as a PHYSICAL OBJECT (incl. as a POSSESSION and as a LIVING ORGANISM), as a CONTAINER (incl. CONSTRUCTION and BODY as a CONTAINER), as TRAVELLING together (with primary focus on TRAVELLING together rather than SOURCE or TARGET), as a UNITY (with focus on how a UNITY is ESTABLISHED, MAINTAINED and DISSOLVED, ideally by two COMPATIBLE partners), as a PHYSICAL and NATURAL FORCE and as a DISEASE (where LOVE can affect a person’s perception and sanity). In addition, ROMANTIC LOVE is, in a small number of expressions, metaphorized as a CRIME, as a PHYSICAL CONFLICT and as a GAME. The variation in metaphorization is small between the conversations. Some metaphorizations seem to be related to the age of the participants. ROMANTIC LOVE ismoreover something people usually have influence over and in some ways can control. In total, 780 metaphorical expressions and 9 source domains are identified. Departing from the interplay betweenmetaphorization and culture, a cultural model for ROMANTIC LOVE is reconstructed, where a multifaceted, embodied and experiential concept of ROMANTIC LOVE emerges.

    Abstract [en]

    This degree project shows how four language teachers teach foreign languages with focus oncommunicative competence, and how their vision of teaching correspond to their reality in the classroom. How do they motivate the students in class and are the conditions good enough tohelp the teachers reach the national goals? A teacher’s vision is formed by his or her education and experiences. However, there are a number of factors which can help or hinder a teacher to reach his or her ideal teaching. Among these factors are the curriculum, the preknowledgeof the students and available technical resources. The method used in this thesis is qualitative interviews with two Australian and two Swedish foreign language teachers. This method was chosen in order to give the interviewees the possibility to speak more freely about their vision compared to their reality. The results show that there are more similarities than differences between Sweden and Australia when we look at the teachers’ ideals. There are anumber of factors why the teachers do not reach their ideals. The findings show that it is necessary with adequate teacher training to uphold qualitative language teaching corresponding to continuously changing curriculums. Moreover, the curriculum mentions communicative language teaching more and more today, but the teachers experience difficulties when teaching and evaluating communicative competence.     Detta examensarbete handlar om hur olika bearbetningssätt för text fungerar för sina målgrupper. Syftet med studien är att jämföra språkliga faktorer i textbearbetningar på Tydlig svenska och Lättläst, samt att undersöka hur dessa faktorer upplevs av läsare med funktionsnedsättningar. Undersökningen består av två delar: kvantitativ textanalys och kvalitativa intervjuer. Textanalysen syftar till att lyfta fram särskiljande textuella drag i två bearbetningar på Lättläst och Tydlig svenska. Dessa textfaktorer ligger sedan till grund för fem intervjuer med representanter för de funktionsnedsättningar som ingår i målgruppen samt en kontrollgrupp. De aktuella funktionsnedsättningarna är lindrig utvecklingsstörning, Aspergers syndrom och barndomsdövhet. Resultaten från textanalysen visar att skillnaderna är större mellan själva bearbetningarna än mellan texttypernas riktlinjer. Bearbetningarna skiljer sig bland annat åt i fråga om ordföljd, meningslängd och textbindning. Intervjuresultaten visar på att målgruppen är mycket heterogen, och att det är svårt att konkret styrka texttypernas riktlinjer utifrån målgruppens läsupplevelse. Slutsatsen blir att det är viktigare att skribenten förstår sin målgrupp än att hon strikt följer en uppsättning riktlinjer.
