The Dyophysite Nature of the Internet: Negotiating Authorities within Institutionalized Christianity2017In: Cultural Analysis, ISSN 1537-7873, E-ISSN 1537-7873, Vol. 16, no 1, p. 83-100Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Is the internet a means for individual empowerment and collective upheaval against oppressive powers, or is it a tool to monitor and control people in the hands of authoritarian rulers? This article addresses the “dyophysite” or what can be called the double nature of internet. That is a dualism that goes back to the origin of internet with its roots simultaneously in American West coast counterculture and the cold war militarism of the 1960s. Within the Christian community, this dualism plays out as the internet is viewed in a paradoxical matter. Even as cyberspace equips evangelicals to connect with other believers, it can introduce Christians to pagan ideas, tempting misbehavior and destructive communities.

Why does the archbishop not tweet?: how social media challenge church authorities2015In: Nordicom Review, ISSN 1403-1108, E-ISSN 2001-5119, Vol. 36, no 1, p. 109-123Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In summer 2012, the Archbishop of the Church of Sweden appeared on Twitter. There was only one problem – it was not the Archbishop himself who was tweeting, but an anonymous person. A discussion then ensued on Twitter and in the blogosphere between those in favor of the Archbishop and his department and mainly social media proponents.

The present article describes and analyzes the social media debate, and how authority and hierarchies are negotiated in and through social media. The analysis is based on Heidi Campbell’s “Religious-Social Shaping of Technology” model, and emphasizes the need to take into account not only the faith and tradition of the religious actor, but also the societal context in which the negotiating process takes place. In this case, the concepts of “media- tization” and “secularization” are used to understand the broader context of the process.

The Virtual Construction of the Sacred: Representation and Fantasy in the Architecture of Second Life Churches2014In: Nordic Journal of Religion and Society, ISSN 0809-7291, E-ISSN 1890-7008, Vol. 27, no 1, p. 59-73Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study aims to construct a typology of the visual style of Christian spaces in the online vir-tual world of Second Life (SL). Virtual worlds offer diverse new possibilities for architecturalstyle, unrestricted by gravity, weather or scarcity of materials. These new regions also operatelargely beyond the control and indeed awareness of established religious authorities, so they canalso offer users new opportunities to reconsider the social structure of their communities. Thisresearch project aims to survey religious responses to these new potential freedoms. Research todate on religion in SL has focused on small samples of spaces or activity, but we found 114Christian spaces. An overwhelming number of the locations we visited featured a Christianchurch building. 81 of 114 included a church building that reproduced a recognizable offlinearchitectural style, and only 9 included a church with an entirely different style. Only 15 Chris-tian locations had buildings that cannot be characterised as churches.

    Abstract [en]

The thesis examines developments in Swedish theological scholarship during the 20th century, focusing especially on the polarization that manifested itself between the two subject fields theology and religious studies. The main purpose of the study has been to show how this polarization arose, but it also discusses ways of avoiding this polarization and considers how theology relates to society today. The thesis consists of an introduction, two parts and seven chapters. The introductory chapter provides a background in which the orientation and modus operandi of theology during the 20th century are examined from various points of view. The background description presents three tendencies which give starting points for a detailed understanding of Swedish theological scholarship in the 20th century. These three tendencies are the historical orientation of theology, an emphasis on prolegomena (reflections on the subject’s theoretical assumptions) and the fragmentation of theology. These serve as a backdrop for the subsequent study.

PART ONE “The assumptions of theology” gives a broad understanding of the external assumptions of theology and religious studies in 20th century Sweden. It is divided into two chapters, one of which examines the role of theology in the modern university while the other presents criticism of theologians. This part contains a description and discussion of the external assumptions of theology and how the theological institutions, together with the theology presented there, have been treated by critics.

PART TWO “Theological approaches” examines some important theological approaches, the main focus being on how theologians have approached questions pertaining to theology’s scholarly credentials and its role in society, a treatment which sheds further light on the various aspects of the issue of the polarization of theology and religious studies. Thus in this study the theologians’ texts will contribute to an understanding of the events of the 20th century. This part is divided into three chapters. The thesis shows that during the 20th century, the question of the scholarly credentials of theology became more important than that of theology’s role in society. The study concludes by gathering together aspects of the orientation of theological scholarship and the picture of theology and religious studies in 20th century Sweden. The polarization of theology and religious studies is discussed from the standpoint of late modern assumptions. The thesis shows that the polarization between theology and religious studies which manifested itself in Swedish theological scholarship during the 20th century arose out of the postulation of simplistic contradictions between the scholarly and the confessional dimensions. Finally, I offer a discussion of the relevance of theology today and what scope it has for connecting with society.

    Abstract [en]

Introduction: What would a Swedish upper secondary student say if suddenly, meditation was introduced as an optional addition to his or her schedule. Would they be optimistic and see it as an opportunity for relaxation in their hectic day? Or would they be of the opinion that meditation is a religious practice and should not be allowed in a secular school? Perhaps they would think neither, instead holding a more neutral opinion? This was the central question for this questionnaire study. It was asked based on the reaction yoga received when it was introduced in a Swedish school, as some adults saw it as a religious practice. Later it was decided by the School Inspection that it was to be allowed, as attendance was completely voluntary.Method: The questionnaire in this study used four closed questions to get information on the attitude of upper secondary students towards meditation in schools, their interest in attending the hypothetic meditation and the most frequently used arguments for and against it. The questionnaire was modelled after Alan Brymans book Social research methods. After the questionnaire was finalized, it was sent out to mentors of third year students of several high schools in Västerbotten County. The goal was to get 100 responses from upper secondary school students, in the end 78 responses were obtained. The results of the questionnaire were presented in circle and bar graphs. Results: The gathered information showed that a majority of the surveyed upper secondary students had a positive attitude towards meditation in their schools. Among the most frequently used arguments pro and against the meditation, the most frequent argument for the inclusion of meditation was that it would be an opportunity for relaxation. Of the arguments against the inclusion of meditation the most frequent was that it would take up unnecessary space in their schedule. Conclusion: Through the information gathered with the questionnaire we can see a theme of positive attitude from the students. A clear majority of them are either interested in trying meditation, sees it as a useful tool, or simply has a positive view of it while perhaps being less interested of trying it themselves.

Den lame mannen i Kapernaum i tolkningar av Martin Luther och John Calvin.: Funktionshinder och synd i en bibelberättelses reception.2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Through the two influential Protestant reformers Martin Luther´s and JohnCalvin's readings, I intend to explore the view of disability and sin within theChristian tradition. One of the biblical stories that has been read andinterpreted in the light of disability issues is the well-known episode in the NewTestament, which is often called "the paralytic". In both the Old and NewTestaments, there are several places that may indicate a connection betweendisability and sin, and through thoughts of human sin as a common thread Ipresent how the two Bible readers read the pericopes.

Från aktivist till terrorist: En kvalitativ studie om radikalisering2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

En kolonial fantasi: En studie i hur kvinnor inom islam framställs i religionsläroböcker för gymnasiet2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This essay explores the understanding of suffering from an ethical stand point. The issue of defining suffering is not an easy task albeit an important one, depending on the definition different consequences ensues. This essay examines how suffering is defined in the field of bioethics, and how these definitions become apparent through the argument of certain biomedical ethicists. To pinpoint the moral arguments and dilemmas a preexisting case, the case of Baby (or Infant) Doe is examined from each biomedical ethicist’s perspective. From the conclusions gathered from the studies, this essay will then attempt to answer the question of defining and understanding suffering.

    Abstract [en]

The thesis, The Return of Christian Gnosticism. An Investigation of the Theology of Ulf Ekman, is divided into two main sections. In the first section I address the question of what can be seen as characteristic of modern Gnosticism. This section also performs a preparatory function for the second section which contains the primary focus of the thesis, namely an analysis of Ulf Ekman’s theology and an investigation as to whether this theology can be regarded as a modern expression of Gnostic ideas. The first section of the thesis thus creates a platform which is later used to provide answers for the questions found in the second section. In the final chapter of the thesis I shall also relate Ekman’s theology more generally to a neo-Gnostic intellectual climate.

In the second section of the thesis I investigate the extent to which Ekman’s theology, which is closely related to international, primarily American, religious movements, contains veins of Gnosticism. I discuss in the background of ideas behind the American religious movement’s theology. Kenyon is reckoned to be the American movement’s founder and he is considered Ekman’s most significant spiritual father. I also discuss briefly how Gnostic thinking has contributed in various ways to the ideas of romanticism. I return to this theme in the concluding chapter of the thesis where I reflect on Gnostic traditions and ideas, and their presence in our culture. Then I present Ekman’s main theological thoughts. The focal point of the thesis is to what extent Ulf Ekman’s theology can be viewed as an expression of Christian neo-Gnosticism. The comparison that I draw in this section between Ekman’s theology and modern Gnosticism is based on the “Gnostic grammar” formulated in the first section. This comparison lies on a structural level, that is to say I compare the extent to which the fundamental thought structures in Ekman’s theology agree with the term modern Gnosticism as used in this thesis. This analysis is conducted under headings such as view of humanity; faith; salvation and knowledge; the cosmos and the world; dualism. I then discuss the results of the analysis and pose the question as to whether Ekman’s theology can be seen as being a modern, Christian Gnostic theology. There then follows a reflection over Ekman’s Christian Gnostic grammar. In the concluding chapter, the return of Christian Gnosticism, I widen the perspective by relating Ekman’s thinking to other, more general, cultural examples of Gnosticism such as the film The Matrix and the philosophy of James Redfield. I also discuss the issue of whether Ulf Ekman’s theology can be viewed as an expression of secularisation, if by secularisation one means Christian convictions permeating culture to an ever decreasing extent. This chapter also makes even clearer the historical connections, and their importance for the understanding of Ekman’s theology.

    Abstract [en]

In 1952 a pro-Japanese group in Hawai'i became the religious movement Tenshō-Kōtai-Jingū-kyō, after the arrival of Sayo Kitamura, a charismatic woman from Japan called Ōgamisama. Her teaching was filled with traditional elements, and Japanese imperialism acquired a new form, and became a spiritual world – a world filled with spirits in need of redemption. To dance in an ego-free state and redeem the evil spirits was a goal for her followers, who learnt how to perform the ecstasy dance and to achieve an altered state of consciousness. Some families, though, were suspected of being carriers of evil spirits called inu-gami (dog spirits). This was a relic of witchcraft, and since hatred, jealousy, envy, and other emotional antipathies produced possession spirits among those who refused to accept Japan's position at the end of the war, Ōgamisama – the mouthpiece of The Sun Goddess Amaterasu – was welcomed as a faith healer and face saver.

    Abstract [sv]

Buddhism i Läroböcker: Presentation av buddhism i läroböcker för religionskunskap 12019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The introductory chapter in this study introduces the reader to the overall problem that concernsLawrence Kohlberg and Sven G. Hartman's moral education models. The purpose and questions ofthis studie specifies the overall problem in order to facilitate the process of answer the researchquestions, which is largely about which of Kohlberg's and Hartman's theory one can reasonablyadvocate in the context of, when teachers plan their lessons. Also how do the theories relate to eachother based on the source material. This chapter also describes the hermeneutical method anddocument analysis used to answer the questions. Both Kohlberg's and Hartman's theories aredescribed in this chapter, as well as a problematisation of them. Since the source material consistsof freely written texts of young people, this chapter also discuss ethical considerations. Chapter Twopresents the result, consisting of quoted texts written by the youngsters. The texts presents theirthoughts and arguments about different moral or ethical problems. These problems are divided intothree categories, material and resource distribution, power distribution (political) and solutions toinequality. This chapter also includes the analyses of the result by Kohlberg's and Hartman'stheories. Chapter three, analysis and discussion, answers the questions as to whether teachers haveany benefit from these theories, as well as what one can derive from comparing these theories witheach other. In conclusion, this chapter presents a discussion about which theory is most suitable touse by teachers in the schools, based on the source material. Although the chapter, analysis anddiscussion, mentioning advantages of both theories, the analysis suggests that Kohlberg's theoryweighs a little heavier in a school kontext than Hartman's theory.
