    Abstract [en]

    A set of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines has been synthesized and integrated in the clinical decision support system DMSS-R (Dementia Management and Support System) to support clinical routines and reasoning processes as performed by individual health professionals in daily practice. DMSS-R provides advice, tailored to individual and often exceptional patient cases, to the user while providing guidance to the next step in the assessments and support for hypothesis generation and evaluation throughout the process. This paper describes DMSS-R and the results of a case study in clinical practice where the system was used. The case study included interviews and observations of the clinical investigation process as undertaken in 41 real patient cases with suspected dementia. Two physicians participated, one of whom was considered a novice regarding dementia while the other had a moderate level of skills. Initially, both physicians were unfamiliar with DMSS-R. A group of nurses together with care personnel and relatives were also involved. The most important contribution of DMSS-R at the point of care, apart from the tailored explanatory support related to a patient case, was the educational support it provided. This was partly manifested in a change of routines in the encounter with patients. Aspects regarding the individual health care professional’s need for a personalized support system are discussed and put in relation to the team’s need for support, and in relation to the diversity of disease manifestations in this group of patients, which reinforces patient-centric assessments.

    Supporting human actors in daily living activities for improv- ing health and wellbeing is a fundamental goal for assistive technology. The personalization of the support provided by assistive technology in the form of digital coaching requires user models that handle potentially conflicting goals and motives. The aim of this research is to extend a motivational model implemented in an assistive technology, and outline a team of assistive agents with supplementary goals following the human’s different properties, orchestrated by a companion agent based on the multipurpose motivational model for the human actor who is to be supported. The multi- purpose motivational model and supportive arguments relating to different motives are exemplified based on a use case from an earlier pilot user study of the assistive technology. Future work includes user studies to validate the model.

    Abstract [en]

    The main purpose of assistive technology is to support an individual's daily activities, in order to increase ability, autonomy, relatedness and quality of life. The aim for the work presented in this article is to develop automated methods to tailor the behavior of the assistive technology for the purpose to provide just-in-time, adaptive interventions targeting multiple domains. This requires methods for representing and updating the user model, including goals, preferences, abilities, activity and its situation. We focus the assessment and intervention tasks typically performed by therapists and provide knowledge-based technology for supporting the process. A formative evaluation study was conducted as a part of a participatory action research process, involving two rehabilitation experts, two young individuals and one senior individual as end-user participants, in addition to knowledge engineers. The main contribution of this work is a theory-based method for assessing the individual's goals, preferences, abilities and motives, which is used for building a holistic user model. The user model is continuously updated and functions as the base for tailoring the system's assistive behavior during intervention and follow-up.

    There is a major goal in the mining industry to reduce risks and maintain health in work environments. Moreover, the industry is obliged to monitor the risks in work environment as well as employers’ health statuses. The potentials in using ambient information for the purpose to reduce risks, prevent work-related injuries and monitor health in individuals has been explored. Applications tailored to the individual are being developed to aid the worker in mining or mining-related work environments in valuing the risks of their work situation and create awareness in the individual about how he or she can decrease risks for primarily physical damages. The purpose is to encourage the worker to act upon the level of risk for injuries, and upon the new insights the worker gain from the applications. The identified opportunities for and obstacles to integrating ambient information in these health applications are discussed.

    In order to provide support for differential diagnosis of dementia in medical practice, logical specification of a single clinical guideline is not sufficient. Therefore, a synthesis guideline has been formalized using core features from selected clinical guidelines which report high sensitivity, using conventional two-valued propositional logic. This guideline is sufficient for capturing the major part of typical cases of patients in the domain. However, in order to provide support in atypical cases, additional clinical guidelines are needed in the reasoning process which report higher specificity but are pervaded with more uncertainty. In order to capture the different levels of significance in evidence expressed in the clinical guidelines an argumentation framework based on a many-valued propositional logic is adapted for the domain. This is accomplished in a context of transformations between logics. Formal frameworks will be given as well as a clinical case study where the sets of values that are attached to arguments correspond to the vocabulary used in the clinical guidelines, as well as the functions which compute the significance.

    In order to give full support for differential diagnosis of dementia in medical practice, one single clinical guideline is not sufficient. A synthesis guideline has been formalized using core features from selected clinical guidelines for the purpose of providing decision support for clinicians in clinical practice. This guideline is sufficient for typical cases in the domain, but in order to give support in atypical cases additional clinical guidelines are needed which are pervaded with more uncertainty. In order to investigate the applicability of a probabilistic formalism language for the formalization of these guidelines, a case study was made using the qualitative probabilistic reasoning approach developed in [1]. The case study is placed in context of a foundational view of transformations between logics. The clinical decision-making motivation and utility for this transformation will be given together with some formal indications concerning this transformation.

    Abstract [en]
    In the development of a clinical decision-support system for the domain of cognitive disorders, the domain knowledge was analysed. Certain qualitative aspects of the knowledge were of special interest, which, when taken into account, allow the system to be used as the intended cognitive tool which mediates learning, reasoning and decision-making in a clinical setting. The aspects concerned granularity, complexity and ambiguity in the evidence. Motives for how these are managed in the system development are given. The domain knowledge was integrated in a model of the clinical reasoning process, which was valuated by interviewing and observing domain experts and primary care physicians while using the prototype system with the model integrated. The resulting support given by the system throughout the reasoning process includes the distinction between typical and atypical cases of patients, an interpretation of the evidence concerning a patient within different contexts of clinical guidelines, thus eliciting ambiguities and their sources. The system also provides different level of support depending on the user’s need and experience.

    The need for improving dementia care has driven the development of the clinical decision support system DMSS (Dementia Management and Support System). A sociotechnical approach to design and development has been applied, with an activity-centered methodology and user participation throughout the process. Prototypes have been developed based on the characteristics of clinical practice and domain knowledge, while clinical practice has been subjected to different efforts for development such as education and organizational change. This paper addresses the lessons learned and role and impact DMSS has had, and is expected to have on the clinical assessment of dementia in different clinics in Sweden, South Korea and Japan. Furthermore, it will be described in what way the development of DMSS and the development of dementia care in these three areas are interlinked. Results indicate that the most important contribution of DMSS at the point of care, is the educational support that DMSS provides, part from the tailored explanatory support related to a patient case. This effect was partly manifested in a change of routines in the encounter with patients.

    The overall aim of this research is to develop an adaptive digital coaching system that gives seniors personalized support for increasing physical activity, and promoting participation in social activity and their own care. The main research question is how can different behavioral and motivational factors of an individual be formally integrated into the knowledge base of a coach agent for generating support tailored to the individual’s needs and preferences in a specific situation?

    The results include a theory-based motivational model incorporating different person-centric factors, and an algorithm for generating the adaptive and persuasive behavior of the agent that aims to motivate the individual. These are integrated in a mobile coaching application together with a set of theory-based motivating messages targeting primarily physical and social activities. Future work includes the development of methods for handling conflicting motives, and user studies.

    The goal to facilitate a continuing medical education can be incorporated in the design of a clinical decision-support system. Developing a method for evaluating knowledge and skill development as part of evaluating the system is the aim for the research presented in this paper. The activity supported by the system was analyzed using Activity theory and structured into a protocol. Four clinicians were studied using the system for the first time, and their activity were assessed using the concept of Zone of Proximal Development. Initial results show how the system was used for clinician with different level of skills, and provide implications for further development of the methodology and the system.

    Five physiotherapists organised a user-centric design process of a knowledge-based support system for promoting exercise and preventing falls. The process integrated focus group studies with 17 older adults and prototyping. The transformation of informal medical and rehabilitation expertise and older adults' experiences into formal information and process models during the development was studied. As tool they used ACKTUS, a development platform for knowledge-based applications. The process became agile and incremental, partly due to the diversity of expectations and preferences among both older adults and physiotherapists, and the participatory approach to design and development. In addition, there was a need to develop the knowledge content alongside with the formal models and their presentations, which allowed the participants to test hands-on and evaluate the ideas, content and design. The resulting application is modular, extendable, flexible and adaptable to the individual end user. Moreover, the physiotherapists are able to modify the information and process models, and in this way further develop the application. The main constraint was found to be the lack of support for the initial phase of concept modelling, which lead to a redesigned user interface and functionality of ACKTUS.

    The inclusion and autonomy of older people in the society where large parts of the life is organized with computer and Internet use as means is addressed in an ongoing project in the rehabilitation and health domains. Part from investigating the potentials of using ICT for rehabilitation of older people with limited or no computer skills, the aim for the project is to develop methods and tools for the purpose, and also for the interaction design domain where systems are developed for older people. The resulting methods are used for informing the design of the system in an iterative process.

    Abstract [en]

    Existing approaches to ambient assisted living (AAL) often fail to consider a human agent's needs from a holistic perspective. In particular, the regular assessment of their changing abilities, skills and limitations are often treated as a separate matter in healthcare, thereby affecting the possibilities to provide support tailored to their current condition. Therefore, the objective of this work is to integrate assessment done by the healthcare professional into the framework of AAL. We use a case scenario as base for domain experts in their development of the interaction between software agents and with the older adult in assessment and adaptation for supporting him/her in a home environment. The potentials in allowing professionals author and design the dialogue systems as part of a meta-design process is evaluated and discussed.

We propose a framework based on a model for activity-centered modeling of knowledge and interaction tailored to users (ACKTUS) and an egocentric interaction model. We exemplify the interaction between system modules as agent dialogues in assessment and adaptation for supporting an older adult in a home environment.

    This paper presents ACKTUS, a modeling tool for developingknowledge-based systems for the health domain, and an evaluation study of thesystem. The main purpose of the evaluation was to investigate whether thefunctionality and interaction design of ACKTUS was sufficiently intuitive forthe domain experts to contribute with knowledge and to model the interactiondesign of the three end users’ applications. Another purpose was to evaluate theapplicability of the activity assessment protocol AAIMA for analysis. The studydesign was qualitative and formative, using observations and interviews withusers to collect data. Three medical experts and two experts in occupationaltherapy participated, providing expertise in four different domains. Theparticipants increased their understanding and skills during the evaluationperiod leading to improved knowledge-based applications. The AAIMAprotocol proved to be useful and the results are fed into ongoing developmentwork on developing the adaptive functionality of the ACKTUS systems.

    Abstract [en]

    We investigate a user-driven collaborative knowledge engineering and interaction design process. The outcome is a knowledge-based support application tailored to physicians in the local dementia care community. The activity is organized as a part of a collaborative effort between different organizations to develop their local clinical practice. Six local practitioners used the generic decision-support prototype system DMSS-R developed for the dementia domain during a period and participated in evaluations and re-design. Additional two local domain experts and a domain expert external to the local community modeled the content and design of DMSS-R by using the modeling system ACKTUS. Obstacles and success factors occurring when enabling the end-users to design their own tools are detected and interpreted using a proposed framework for improving care through the use of clinical guidelines. The results are discussed.

    This paper presents a terminology model of activity that integrates a common set of features to be used by domain experts in the modeling of knowledge in, and interaction with personalised knowledge systems in the medical and health domain. The model is developed based on theories and methods from multiple research domains in addition to empirical field studies of three application domains with end user prototype applications integrated. Features related to the user such as body functions, roles, motives, skills and preferences were included for personalisation purposes and protocols for designing interaction and reasoning. The model is integrated in a service-oriented architecture underlying Semantic Web applications and is extended with domain specific content in the application projects. Application examples are provided from the dementia domain and from monitoring health related issues in the mining and construction work environments.

    This paper presents the results from a qualitative evaluation study of the semantic web application ACKTUS-dementia, developed for the purpose of supporting a distributed collaborative knowledge engineering process. The main purpose of the study was to investigate whether the functionalities used for the purpose are intuitive and to what extent expert physicians are able to use the system for the purpose intended. The experts were observed when executing tasks and interviews were conducted to investigate issues and attitudes concerning integrating contextual knowledge to enrich the knowledge in the application. Results indicate that the system fulfils its purpose and is useful for capturing sources of possible misinterpretations, possible alternative interpretations and ambiguities in the domain knowledge. There was also an interest expressed to extend the system to include contextual knowledge for the international collegiums to share as a continuing medical education apart from supporting patient-centric assessments.

    This paper presents ACKTUS, a semantic web platform for modeling and managing knowledge integrated in support systems for health care, and for designing the interaction with the end user applications. A key purpose is to allow the domain experts to collaboratively model the knowledge content and tailor interaction to users. Therefore, the development has been done in a process of participatory action research where domain experts have contributed to the design and re-design of ACKTUS while they have been modeling the content and behavior of end-user applications. The ontology that serves as the knowledge structure in the system integrates the user model, modality values, clinical practice guidelines and preferences, in the form of schemes and scheme-nodes (arguments) in an argumentation framework, partly by integrating the argument interchange format. User studies have shown that ACKTUS can be used for the intended purpose by domain professionals not familiar with knowledge engineering tasks. Moreover, the platform functions as a research infrastructure for health researchers in their development and evaluation of new ICT-based interventions targeting improved health.

    Reasoning conducted in clinical practice is manifested through different and often combined reasoning and learning strategies, adjusted to the characteristics of the available information, the medical professional's experience and skills, and the available tools, such as clinical practice guidelines. This research outlines a design model for supporting the commonly used strategies. This design model was implemented into a clinical decision-support system (CDSS), in addition to a method for detecting reasoning strategies applied when using the CDSS. This method was applied in a case study, with preliminary results presented in this paper and will be further implemented in future studies.

We use a case scenario in the collaborative development with domain experts to demonstrate and develop the interaction between software agents and with the older adult in assessment and adaptation for supporting him/herin a home environment. The scenario also serves as an outline for a requirements analysis of the formal agent-based dialogues to be implemented. The results include a partial implementation of the scenario done by domain experts intheir use of a semantic web-based knowledge and interaction modelling environment for domain professionals (ACKTUS). The resulting prototype applications are exemplified in a description of the scenario and an initial prototype implementation of selected agent-based diagnostic dialogues is presented.

    In this paper, an argumentation-based deliberative approach for fusing contextual information obtained from heterogeneous sources using a multi-agent system is introduced. The system is characterized by three different agents: an Environment Agent, an Activity Agent and a Coach Agent. These agents consider data from heterogenous sources of data. As a method for aggregating data and supporting decision-making, so-called agreement rules are instrumental in the argumentation-based deliberative method. The aggregation rules will be associated to specific beliefs related to the services of each agent.

    Recognizing and supporting human activities is an important challenge for ambient assisted living. In this paper we introduce a novel argumentation-based approach for dealing with human activity recognition. By considering a model of the world and a set of observations of the world, hypothetical fragments of activities are built. The hypothetical fragments of activities will be goal-oriented actions and they will be considered defeasible. Therefore we consider extension-based argumentation semantics for local selection of hypothetical fragments of activities. By considering degrees of fulfillment of activities and local selection, a global selection of hypothetical fragments of the activities is defined. Therefore, we can make explicit statements about why one hypothetical activity was performed.

    In this paper, we introduce an inquiry dialogue approach for supporting decision making in a smart environment setting. These inquiry dialogues have as topic either agreement atoms or agreement rules, which capture services in a smart environment. These services are provided and supported by three rational agents with different roles: Environment Agent, Activity Agent and Coach Agent. These three agents have different capabilities and represent different data sources; however, they have to collaborate in order to deliver services in a smart environment. The knowledge base of each agent is captured by extended logic programs. Therefore, the construction of arguments is supported by the Well-Founded Semantics (WFS). The outcome of the inquiry dialogues is supported by well-known argumentation semantics.

    The consideration of heterogenous knowledge sources for supporting decision making is key to accomplish informed decisions, e.g., about medical diagnosis. Consequently, merging different data from different knowledge bases is a key issue for providing support for decision-making. In this paper, we explore an argumentation context approach, which follows how medical professionals typically reason, in order to merge two basic kinds of reasoning approaches based on logic programs: deductive and abductive inferences. In this setting, we introduce two kinds of argumentation frameworks: deductive argumentation frameworks and abductive argumentation frameworks. For merging these argumentation frameworks, we follow an approach based on argumentation context systems. We illustrate the approach by considering two different declarative specifications of evidence-based medical knowledge into logic programs in order to support informed medical decisions.

    We introduce the class of possibilistic nested logic programs. These possibilistic logic programsallow us to use nested expressions in the bodies and the heads of their rules. By considering apossibilistic nested logic program as a possibilistic theory, a construction of a possibilistic logicprograming semantics based on answer sets for nested logic programs and the proof theory ofpossibilistic logic is defined. We show that this new semantics for possibilistic logic programsis computable by means of transforming possibilistic nested logic programs into possibilistic disjunctivelogic programs. The expressiveness of the possibilistic nested logic programs is illustratedby scenarios from the medical domain. In particular, we exemplify how possibilistic nested logicprograms are expressive enough for capturing medical guidelines which are pervaded of vaguenessand qualitative information.

    In this paper, the class of possibilistic nested logic programs is introduced. These possibilistic logic programs allow us to use nested expressions in the bodies and heads of their rules. By considering a possibilistic nested logic program as a possibilistic theory, a construction of a possibilistic logic programing semantics based on answer sets for nested logic programs and the proof theory of possibilistic logic is defined. In order to define a general method for computing the possibilistic answer sets of a possibilistic nested program, the idea of equivalence between possibilistic nested programs is explored. By considering properties of equivalence between possibilistic programs, a process of transforming a possibilistic nested logic program into a possibilistic disjunctive logic program is defined. Given that our approach is an extension of answer set programming, we also explore the concept of strong equivalence between possibilistic nested logic programs. To this end, we introduce the concept of poss SE-models. Therefore, we show that two possibilistic nested logic programs are strong equivalents whenever they have the same poss SE-models.

    The expressiveness of the possibilistic nested logic programs is illustrated by a scenario from the medical domain. In particular, we exemplify how possibilistic nested logic programs are expressive enough for capturing medical guidelines which are pervaded by vagueness and qualitative information.

    In this paper we introduce a multi-agent approach designed to deal with medical qualitative diagnosis. This approachis based on BDI-agents which are called Observer and Validating agents. The Observer agents are supported by adeductive inference process and the Validating agents are supported by an abductive inference process. The knowledge bases of these agents are captured by a class of possibilistic logic programs. Hence these agents are able to deal with qualitative information. In order to manage an interaction between Observer and Validating agents, a deliberation dialogue process is defined. The approach is illustrated byreal scenarios from diagnosing dementia disease.

    Medical reasoning describes a form of qualitative inquiry that examines the cognitive (thought) processes involved in making medical decision. In this field the goal for diagnostic reasoning is assessing causes of observed conditions in order to make informed choices about treatment. In order to design a diagnostic reasoning method we merge ideas from a hypothetic-deductive method and the Domino model. In this setting, we introduce the so called Hypothetic-Deductive-Domino (HD-D) algorithm. In addition, a multi-agent approach is presented, which takes advantage of the HD-D algorithm for illuminating different standpoints in a diagnostic reasoning and assessment process, and for reaching a well-founded conclusion. This multi-agent approach is based on the so called Observer and Validating agents. The Observer agents are supported by a deductive inference process and the Validating agents are supported by an abductive inference process.  The knowledge bases of these agents are captured by a class of possibilistic logic programs. Hence, these agents are able to deal with qualitative information. The approach is illustrated by a real scenario from diagnosing dementia diseases.

This approach will be exible enough for managing inconsistent possibilistic models and the non-existence of possibilistic models of a possibilistic logic program.

    Abstract [en]

    The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) defines Functioning and Disability as the results of the interaction between the health conditions of a person and his/her environment. It considers a set of components and qualifiers to evaluate activity and participation. In this paper, we interpret a performance quantifier under a human activity recognition process. To this end, we introduce a novel definition of an activity which is based on ICF guidelines. This definition gives place to a probabilistic non-monotonic activity qualifier. In order to recognize an activity according to our novel activity's definition, we explore non-monotonic reasoning technics to capture domain knowledge in terms of action specification languages. By considering an action specification language, called CTAID, and Answer Set Programming, we propose and develop a system called ActRec system which takes background information into consideration and recognize activities according to our suggested definition. Moreover, we show that by aggregating our probabilistic non-monotonic activity qualifier, we are able of detecting complex activities, e.g., long-term activities. We illustrate our approach in the context of an ambient assisted living environment called As-A-Pal.

    Abstract [en]

    Introduction: The use of adequate self-management strategies for people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) reduces healthcare use, improves health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and recovery after acute exacerbations. However, not many people with COPD receive support that promotes the use of such strategies and therefore new methods to facilitate and promote the use of self-management strategies are highly warranted. This pilot trial aims to evaluate the feasibility of the study design and study procedures considering effectiveness of the novel intervention, the COPD-web.

    Methods and analysis: The overall design is a pragmatic controlled pilot trial with preassessments and postassessments and a parallel process evaluation. Patients with the diagnosis of COPD will be eligible for the study. The intervention group will be recruited when visiting one of the six participating primary care units in Sweden. The control group will be identified from the unit's computerised registers. The intervention, the COPD-web, is an interactive web page with two sections; one directed at people with COPD and one at healthcare professionals. The sections aim to support patients' self-management skills—and to facilitate the provision of support for self-management strategies, respectively. Effectiveness with regard to patients' symptoms, HRQoL, knowledge of and readiness for COPD-related self-management, health literacy, self-efficacy for physical activity and time spent in physical activity and time being sedentary, and further, healthcare professionals' knowledge of and readiness to support COPD-related self-management strategies will be assessed using questionnaires at 3 and 12 months. The process evaluation will include observations and interviews.

    Ethics and dissemination: Ethical approval has been obtained. Findings will be presented at conferences, submitted for publication in peer-reviewed publications and presented to the involved healthcare professionals, patients and to patient organisations.

    Background: Exercise is effective in order to prevent falls in community-dwelling older people. Self-management programs have the potential to increase access and reduce costs related to exercise-based fall prevention. However, information regarding older people's views of participating in such programs is needed to support implementation. The aim of this study was to explore older people's experiences of a self-management fall prevention exercise routine guided either by a digital program (web-based or mobile) or a paper booklet.

    Methods: This qualitative study was part of a feasibility study exploring two completely self-managed exercise interventions in which the participants tailored their own program, guided either by a digital program or a paper booklet. Individual face-to-face semi-structured interviews were conducted with a purposeful sample of 28 participants (18 women), mean age 76yrs. Qualitative content analysis was used to analyse the data.

    Results: Self-managing and self-tailoring these exercise programs was experienced as Managing pieces of a personal puzzle'. To independently being able to create a program and manage exercise was described in the categories Finding my own level' and Programming it into my life'. The participants experienced the flexibility and independence provided by completely self-managed exercise as positive and constructive although it required discipline. Furthermore, different needs and preferences when managing their exercise were described, as well as varying sources of motivation for doing the exercise, as highlighted in the category Defining my source of motivation'. The category Evolving my acquired knowledge' captures the participants' views of building their competence and strategies for maintenance of the exercise. It describes a combined process of learning the program and developing reflection, which was more clearly articulated by participants using the digital program.

    Conclusions: This study provides new knowledge regarding experiences, preferences and motivations of older people to engage in home-based self-managed fall prevention exercise. They expressed both a capability and willingness to independently manage their exercise. A digital program seems to have strengthened the feeling of support while creating their own exercise program and tailoring it to their preferences and circumstances, which might therefore create better opportunities for adoption and adherence in the long term.

    The digitalization of society is spreading around the world and technology has become part of many people’s daily lives. It acts as a means of communication, work, education and leisure. For populations with special needs (people with some kind of disability or disorder) technology can play an essential role in their rehabilitation and treatment. It also empowers the individuals themselves. The aim of this multi-disciplinary research for decades has been to explore, develop and evaluate innovative technology to aid people with disabilities through virtual reality and associated machinery. The field engages researchers from health sectors, areas of engineering and schools of education to collaborate in order to take on a holistic approach to meet these challenges.

    In this cross-disciplinary project senior citizens and researchers participated in the collaborative design and development of a mobile exercise application to prevent falls. The methods Form-IT and Participatory and Appreciative Action and Reflection were applied in a series of workshops, facilitating the creation of new knowledge and a socio-technical platform for an end-user development process. The participation of the older adults was key to understanding the broad range of preferences and motivational aspects. The outcomes emerged into prototypes, which were composed using the ACKTUS platform for end-user development, resulting in a dynamic application, easily adaptable to future needs and studies.

    Spatial relationships or proxemics play an important role in how humans interact with other people and objects in an environment, yet spatial relationships are not thoroughly exploited within smart environments. Objects designed to be aware of its proxemics facilitate implicit and explicit interaction with humans. Kitchen As-A-Pal is an interactive smart kitchen that provides an infrastructure for sensing and modeling proxemics among objects and human using a sonar network and RFID technology. Position, movement, identity and location are the proxemics dimensions explored in kitchen As-A-Pal. A pilot study of a breakfast scenario comprising of 9 everyday activities in Kitchen As-A-Pal using 2 subjects yielded promising proximity tracking results with a precision of 100% and a recall of 68.3% for spatial zones with high and medium average time percentages (ATP). Also, 53.21% ATP has more than 95% recall values.

    Technological advancements have taken us closer to the "kitchen of the future" where everyday kitchen activities are seamlessly integrated with smart computing services. While there exist smart kitchen approaches, the explorative nature of the field encourages novel designs. This paper follows the trend by describing the design and development of the Kitchen AS-A-PAL, an infrastructure for facilitating smart kitchen services. Smart objects are the building blocks of Kitchen AS-A-PAL where three types of smart objects namely Containers, Surfaces and Actuators are explored through smart kitchen applications including interactive cookbook, health'n shopping and kaffe, god morgon.

    Smart spaces are everyday environments augmented with computing technologies that enhance human experience and activity performance. Continuous recognition of the presence of people, their identity, location, movement and activity patterns in real-time is a key challenge to address if smart spaces are to be envisioned as personalized and adaptive spaces. This paper introduces the multiple technologies available for human sensing and identification, discussing their advantages and disadvantages. In particular, Kitchen As-A-Pal is described as a smart space with real-time human sensing capabilities using computer vision by fusing fisher face recognition and skeletal tracking approaches. A wall-mounted Kinect is used for both single occupant and multi-occupant settings in kitchen As-A-Pal. The fused approach gives human identity recognition accuracy of 91.75% precision and 66% recall values for single occupant setting with good smart space coverage. Challenges do exist for human identity recognition in multi-occupant settings.

    A Generic Approach for Data Management and End-User Development of Clinical Decision Support Systems2018Rapport (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

    The main purposes of clinical decision-support systems (CDSS) are disseminating evidence-based medical knowledge (EBM), supporting a continued medical education, and improving clinical decision making and care. These purposes are traditionally achieved by using solutions that are relatively transparent and explainable to the end user. However, the development and maintenance of such solutions is resource demanding. Currently, there are four challenges existing in CDSSs when adapting to new circumstances. That is, when facing new knowledge, new diseases, different organizations and users with different skills, usually one needs to update the existing CDSS or develop a new CDSS, which requires lots of time and efforts. Hence, this paper aims for reusing an existing CDSS code by virtue of inputs from authorized medical domain expert users, and with minimal requirement of knowledge and software engineers. To facilitate knowledge elicitation and end-user development, an ACKTUS-based architecture for CDSS development and management is presented that contains: I) A knowledge base and a content management system built on Semantic Web technology to achieve modularity, reusability, customisation, and the possibility to allow medical experts to model the medical knowledge and to structure the information that builds up the design of the user interface; II) A user interface and an graphical user interface generator that automatically generates the user interface whenever the user logs in, so that the interface is synchronised with updates of the knowledge base; III) An inference engine that utilizes patient-specific data and applies various rules in the knowledge base to conduct the reasoning and decision making. These modules can be reused when adapting to new situations. A CDSS for dementia diagnosis is developed and used as an example in the presentation of the generic architecture. A pilot study of the CDSS is presented involving four medical professionals with different levels of expertise. The results show how the generic approach allows for easy knowledge representation and management of EBM, supports a continued medical education and may improve clinical decision making and care provision.

    A clinical decision-support system for dementia investigation was used in clinical practice. User information was collected based on interactions with the application. The aim of this study is to identify features in logged data that can be used for detecting learning and reasoning patterns in the user. A case of a physician who is novice to both the application and the dementia domain was studied and compared to the case of an expert physician using the system. Diferences between them were found, and a clear pattern that indicates that learning takes place, both how to use the system and about dementia, was observed in the novice user. Further studies need to be conducted, focusing on whether patterns become stable over time, and with complementary methods that can detect reasons for observed behaviors. Software for automatic detection will be developed based on the results of this study.
