    Abstract [en]

This article explores the celebrated film The Hunters (Swedish title: Jägarna) within the context of the discourse of Internal Orientalism. By juxtaposing a contemporary Swedish film with historical accounts and contemporary news media, I demonstrate how the film reworks and (re)produces representations of the rural North (Norrland), constructing stereotypes enmeshed with familiar and global genre-specific stereotypes of a traditional and intransigent population positioned in rural areas and a modern and progressive population in urban areas. This paper shows how the representation in popular culture becomes enmeshed with the representation in news media and politics and how this helps obscure geography, gender, ethnicity and class by way of positioning representations of the middle class in urban spaces and white male working class in rural spaces, and by way of constructing class as a choice of lifestyle or culture.

    (Re)producing a "peripheral" region: Northern Sweden in the news2008Ingår i: Geografiska Annaler. Series B, Human Geography, ISSN 0435-3684, E-ISSN 1468-0467, Vol. 90, nr 4, s. 369-388Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Building on theories of internal orientalism, the objectiveof this study is to show how intra-national differences arereproduced through influential media representations. By abstractingnews representations of Norrland, a large, sparsely populatedregion in the northernmost part of Sweden, new modes of“internal othering” within Western modernity are put on view.Real and imagined social and economical differences between the“rural North” and the “urban South” are explained in terms of“cultural differences” and “lifestyle” choices. The concept ofNorrland is used as an abstract essentialized geographical categoryand becomes a metonym for a backward and traditional ruralspace in contrast to equally essentialized urban areas with favouredmodern ideals. Specific traits of parts of the region becomeone with the entire region and the problems of the region becomethe problems of the people living in the region. I argue that thenews representations play a part in the reproduction of a “spaceof exception”, in that one region is constructed as a traditional andundeveloped space in contrast to an otherwise modern nation. Acentral argument of this study is that research on identity constructionand representations of place is needed to come to grips withissues of uneven regional development within western nations.

(Re)producing a periphery: popular representations of the Swedish North2010Doktorsavhandling, monografi (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

The discourse on Norrland (literally ‘North land’ in English) as essentially ‘different’ has been(re)produced in literature, politics and science for as long as the idea of ‘Norrland’ has existed. Thus, when investigating the discourse that constructs the identity of Norrland in opposition to a Swedishnational identity, it is important to connect these representations to their contemporary (andchanging) political-economic contexts. The aim of this thesis is to analyze contemporaryrepresentations in news, film, advertising and interviews to show how representations constructstereotypes informed by neoliberal ideals and internationally familiar stereotypes of a traditionalintransigent population positioned in Norrland and a modern and progressive population in theurban South. The findings in this thesis can be summarized as follows. First, Norrland has beenconsistently reproduced, resisted and reworked through various discursive networks and practicesover centuries, as simultaneously authentic and obsolete. Drawing on these discourses makes therepresentations of Norrland in the news become part of a wider discursive network that representsNorrland as an ‘internal other’ within Sweden. Secondly, discourses on Swedish modernity and onneoliberal growth and competition reproduce Norrland and its people as inferior to the rest ofSweden. These representations are reworked and resisted and result in ‘real’ material effects in, forinstance, the news media, place marketing and film. Thirdly, in order to resist these representationsand become part of the ‘modern’, progressive world, places and people need to adjust to neoliberalideals of competitiveness and growth. And, finally, people’s identities are affected by theseneoliberal ideals as they have to relate and react to the representations of different places andpeople and the discourse on the urban as progress. This results in different strategies in theconstruction of narrative identities. I conclude by arguing that these representations serve not onlyas contrasts but also as strategies in the quest to scapegoat certain groups for problems that initiallyoriginated in unequal opportunities and structures of power related to, for instance, ethnicity, class, gender and disabilities – something that is exacerbated by neoliberalist policies and ideologies. Themore pressure is put on individuals and places to produce constant growth, the more certain peopleand places are viewed as ‘unproductive’ and problematic. The problems of depopulation anddiminishing job opportunities in the inland areas of Norrland are thus blamed on the population through the representations of Norrland as an internal ‘other.’

Labour mobility and plant performance: The influence of proximity, relatedness and agglomeration 2009Doktorsavhandling, sammanläggning (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to shed new light on the theorizations discussing the economic benefits of geographical clustering in a space economy increasingly characterized by globalization processes. This is made possible through the employment of a plant-perspective and a focus on how the relative fixity and mobility of labour influence plant performance throughout the entire Swedish economy.

By means of the longitudinal micro database ASTRID, connecting attributes of individuals to features of plants and localities for the whole Swedish economy, the empirical findings indicate that both localization and urbanization economies produce significant labour market externalities and that such inter-plant linkages positively affect plant performance as compared to the partial effects of relative regional specialization and diversification. Moreover, it is also demonstrated that it is necessary both to distinguish how well the external skills retrieved via labour mobility match the existing knowledge base of plants and to determine the geographical dimension of such flows to verify the relative effect of labour market-induced externalities. Finally, it is demonstrated that whereas general urbanization is beneficial within close distance to the plant, the composition of economic activities is more influential at greater distances. In such cases the geographical dimension influences whether plants benefit from being located in similar or different local settings.

In conclusion, it is argued that the circulation of labour skills, created and reproduced through the place-specific industrial setup, is crucial for understanding the mechanisms creating geographical variations in plant performance as compared to other regional conditions often proxied as relative specialization or diversification. This is because the relative fixity of labour tends to create place- and sector-specific skills which by means of their mobility in space are likely to facilitate the recombination of local skills, make the acquirement of non-local skills possible and secure sufficient affinity between economic actors by strengthening other dimensions of proximity – all aspects regarded as crucial to facilitate interactive learning processes and contribute to sustained regional growth.

Localized spillovers and knowledge flows: How does proximity influence the performance of plants?2011Ingår i: Economic Geography, ISSN 0013-0095, E-ISSN 1944-8287, Vol. 87, nr 2, s. 127-152Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

By means of a unique longitudinal database with information on all plants and employees in the Swedish economy, this paper analyzes how geographical proximity influences the impact of localized spillovers and knowledge flows on the productivity growth of plants. Concerning the effects of spillovers, we show that the density of economic activities as such mainly contributes to plant performance within a very short distance from the plant and that the composition of economic activities is more influential further away. Regarding the influence of local industrial setup, proximity increases the need to be located near different, but related, industries whereas in-creased distance implies a greater effect of intra-industry spillovers. The analyses also demonstrate that knowledge flows via the mobility of skilled labor is primarily a sub-regional phenomenon. Only inflows of skills that are related to the existing knowledge base of plants and come from less than 50 kilometers away have a positive effect on plant performance. Concerning outflows of skills, the results indicate that it is less harmful for a dispatching plant if a former employee remains within the local economy as compared to leaving for a job in another part of the national economy.

Localized mobility clusters: Impacts of labour market externalities on firm performance2009Ingår i: Journal of Economic Geography, ISSN 1468-2702, E-ISSN 1468-2710, Vol. 9, nr 1, s. 33-53Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This article analyses the impact of labour market-induced externalities on firm performance by using a unique database that connects attributes of individuals to workplaces for the entire Swedish economy. Based on the analysis of 256,985 workplaces, our results show that firms belonging to networks of local job mobility (i.e. ‘localized mobility clusters’) significantly outperform other similar firms within the local labour market. The results also indicate that concentrations of similar and related firms do not explain any considerable part of the variations in firm competitiveness. Labour market externalitiesderived via local job mobility produce significantly more powerful effects for the involved firms as compared to the degree of co-location, diversity and scale.

What about people in evolutionary economic geography?2011Konferensbidrag (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

In recent years an increasing interest has been directed towards evolutionary processes of economic change following the notion that history matters for future development. These studies put special emphasis on how the spatial structures of the economy emerge from the micro-behaviours of economic agents (often firms). It this paper we argue that while such an approach indeed may provide new and novel insights on the uneven process of economic change, one important aspect of the economy tend to be neglected, namely the spatial behavior and restrictions of people. In this paper, we therefore outline the ideas to a theoretical framework which more thorough integrates evolutionary economic geography with the time-geographical contribution provided by Torsten Hägerstrand and his adherents in order to provide a synthesis between the interdependent dynamic processes occurring in and between place-specific institutions, firms and people. The paper is structured as followed: First, a critical appraisal of recent evolutionary contributions is presented. This is followed by a discussion on the developments made in time-geography the last couple of decades. The paper ends with a concluding section and an empirical example showing that modern micro-simulation techniques may provide useful insights to the evolutionary processes shaping economic change. The empirical example is framed in recent studies analyzing knowledge flows via the job mobility of skilled individuals within and between local labour markets in Sweden.

Agglomeration mobility: Effects of localisation, urbanisation, and scale on job changes2008Ingår i: Environment and planning A, ISSN 0308-518X, E-ISSN 1472-3409, Vol. 40, s. 2419-2434Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Following increased attention being paid to the importance of labour-market processes in relation to knowledge diffusion and learning, this study addresses the influence of agglomeration economies (localisation, urbanisation, and scale) on the propensity to change jobs between and within local labour markets. From the use of longitudinal individual data (1990 ^ 2002), controlling for factors such as age, sex, income, and social relations, the results show that the composition of regional economies influences labour-market dynamism. We identify two cases of intraregional agglomeration mobility, that is, positive effects on job mobility, due to the concentration of similar activities (localisation economies) and the size of the labour market (urbanisation economies). The results also show that localisation economies compensate for regional structural disadvantages connected to small population numbers, as localisation effects in small regions have a significantlypositive effect on intraregional job-mobility rates, even compared with localisation effects in large and diversified metropolitan areas. The results indicate that the concentration of similar activities may be useful for small regions, if high levels of job mobility are crucial for the transfer of knowledge and the performance of firms.

Employability of Swedish student teacher alumni2008Ingår i: Teacher education policy in Europe: a voice of higher education institutions / [ed] Brian Hudson, Pavel Zgaga, Umeå: Institutionen för tillämpad utbildningsvetenskap, Umeå universitet , 2008, s. 157-181Kapitel i bok, del av antologi (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

In recent years, “employability” has become an increasingly central concept in higher education, in no small part since it constitutes an important aspect of the Bologna Process. The project “Teachers’ employability” is a project carried out on behalf of the Faculty of Teacher Education at Umeå University – one of the major providers of teacher education in Sweden – and is a part of a broader university effort to evaluate and increase employability. The aim of the project is to examine the situation of the university’s student teachers after graduation, as well as to find out how the former students and their employers view their education.

The study is based on the longitudinal individual database ASTRID, questionnaires and interviews. This paper reports findings from the project, focusing on 1) employment situation, income development and mobility patterns of recent alumni (class of 2000) and 2) primary employers’ (school leaders) view of the quality and usefulness of the present teacher education curriculum. While employability is generally high, there are significant differences in career paths and income development, depending on for instance type of degree and place of residence. The interviews with school leaders reveal that although the present curriculum is perceived to have certain general limitations, it is viewed as more suited for pre-school rather than comprehensive school and gymnasium teacher education.

Algae blooms and their consequences on camping tourism on Öland, SwedenManuskript (preprint) (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

In Sweden camping tourism holds the position as one of the largest niches within the tourism accommodation sector. The camping sector represents more than 17 million or 35% of commercial overnight stays in total. On the island of Öland which is located in Kalmar county, and in Kalmar county itself, the camping sector represents more than 1.75 million or 65% of the annual overnight stays which positions Kalmar and Öland as the second largest camping region in Sweden. However, tourism businesses, and especially island tourism systems, can be vulnerable to shifting environmental conditions. In recent years, the media has highlighted the issue of harmful algae blooms frequently affecting coastlines in the Baltic Sea. Based on structured interviews, this article investigates the perceptions of campground managers and camping tourists on Öland have of the impact of algae blooms on tourism. The results show that both among campground managers and visitors, algae blooms are perceived as an environmental concern that might affect tourism in negative ways.

Places on Öland: billlboards in the geography of showing!Manuskript (preprint) (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

Knowledge about the impacts and consequences of restructuring for rural areas is important in order to sustain and develop the local labor market. Tourism has become an alternative development for many rural areas and in the effort to attract visitors and investors, local places are commodified. The distinctiveness of local places has an essential role to play in tourism development, marketing and consumption. In traditional tourism destinations with a rural location, tourism already has a strong position in the local livelihood system. However, restructuring and increasing competition is challenging for traditional destinations and many are struggling to rejuvenate their destination image. The uniqueness of distinct places becomes raw material for this struggle and the local nature, culture, art and food are used to promote the destinations and to revitalize tourism places. The results of this article show that in these processes, the local entrepreneurs and tourism enterprises have an important role to play.

Vägens betydelse för turismen: En studie om den nya E4:ans påverkan på Sundsvalls hotellmarknad2018Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This study examines the importance of road connection to the hotel businesses of a destination. Many destinations request a reconstruction of a connected road route due to different reasons. In this case, the highway E4 Sundsvall has undergone a road route change. The main reason why this action was requested was because the highway was affecting people's health from vehicle emissions, due to being located too close to the society. This study intends to examine the direct effects of the rerouting of the road.

The road that earlier passed through the center of the city is now located outside of Sundsvall. This relocation was conducted mainly due to high amounts of emissions from passing vehicles. Other factors were however also included in the decision to reroute the road. A lot of research shows that there is a strong connection between transport and tourism. This could indicate that this new road location might affect the tourism flow to Sundsvall in a negative way since less people now have to drive through the city. To examine this case, documentation from the project have been studied to understand the expected outcomes of the project. Previous research studies has also been used to gain a deeper understanding of the subject, so that comparisons and analyses can be made in this paper. Passenger statistics across the bridge of Sundsvall has also been collected. This data is used to see the activity on the road, and thus be able to draw back to the purpose of the study. The results however shows that the hotel market in Sundsvall has seen a rise in guest nights and occupied rooms since the new road construction. The project of Sundsvall E4 and previous studies implies the development of a destination. In conclusion, the increase in hotel sales might be linked to city development. This means that in the end, the road route change seems to have a positive connection to the hotel market in Sundsvall, not directly but indirectly because of the changes the city has undergone due to the relocation of the new E4 highway.

    Abstract [sv]

Soviet housing: Who built what and when? The case of Daugavpils,Latvia2010Ingår i: Journal of Historical Geography, ISSN 0305-7488, E-ISSN 1095-8614, Vol. 36, nr 4, s. 453-465Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Throughout much of the Soviet period, access to housing was a major consideration, both for individual citizens and employers intent on increasing their number of employees. Because of the heavy emphasis on industry, and despite the progress made within the area since the late 1950s, Soviet urban residential provision never managed to fully recover from the acute housing shortage that characterized the Stalin years. In this paper, we address the quantitative side of housing construction during the socialist era. Using the mid-sized diversified industrial town of Daugavpils (Latvia) as a case study, we set out to investigate the extent to which employers were involved in decisions concerning housing provision. To do this, we consult a large volume of archival records, our focus being on documents tracing entries indicating that new living quarters were ready and could be allocated to employees of sponsoring organizations and enterprises.

    Abstract [en]

This chapter examines amenity migration in Central Otago, within the southern alpine area of New Zealand's South Island. Emphasis is placed on the roles of second homes and tourism as major factors in amenity migration. Key considerations include the demands being placed on resources, access issues, and potential conflicts between amenity migration and other land uses. Another source of conflict is the rising cost of housing in the region. The chapter concludes by noting the importance of adopting growth management strategies that consider wider aspects of human mobility than at present, as well as an improved statistical and research regime that can capture the dynamics of amenity migration.
