    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to investigate the opinions of pornography in the Swedish press 2016. To perform this, a quantitative method and discourse analysis on 139 published texts have been used. This study shows that the year of 2016 primarily is focused on a strong sence of concern about the effects of pornography rather than the industry itself, and the concerns are primarily rooted in anxiety of the effects on pornography-consumers, that is primarily young boys and men. The debate that is mainly represented by women with a great variety of work titles like scholars, criminologist, politicians, mothers, columnists, and film directors. The articles used for this study were found in newspapers and magazines from all over Sweden. When opinions about pornography is expressed it's usually a negative or critical opinions. If the opinion is positive or defending towards pornography it's usually a response to an already written negative or critical article. The critic is from different feminist theories, pro and counter arguments from both radical- and liberal feminism. Arguments that has its roots in the three counter waves during the 70's-, 80's- and 21's centrury is portrayed by the liberal feminist Petra Östergren in the publication Porr, Horor och Feminister. Some of the feminist arguments occur in contexts that describes the effects of pornography like something that inspire men and young boys to commit violent crimes. But there are also some arguments from the liberal feminist side that is more positive and that is arguing against the fact that women's pleasure is excluded from the male influenced debate. In the beginning of 2016 was the debate mostly focused on violence in pornography, that after a criminologist by the name Nina Rung published an article about sexuell crimes. During the summer the debate was mostly focused on sexual assaults due to the high numbers of assaults and harassments during the summer festivals. It will not be until october that the debate reached its heights, due to an article about the negative effects of pornography written by a group of politicians, tv-personalities and celebrities. Opinions that are possible to recognise during the rest of the year are adults and their concerns for kids and youths. A will to protect children and teenagers from pornography are strongly defined, but also a major discussion about sex norms and ideal in pornography are to be seen during 2016. The effect of pornography are also included in contexts like pornography- or emotional-impotence. An interesting part of the discourse analysis is the concept disclaimer. A linguistic discourse concept introduced by the researcher Teun A. van Dijk. The term have been used frequently by the counter porn critics. “I'm no moralist, but…” is an usual term used by the porn critics, something that could be used due to today's desire and habbit of building once’s own identity in our social media-opinion bubbles.

The media consumers' conscious and unconscious choices: a key to understanding the news media consumption of tomorrow2014Ingår i: Communication électronique, cultures et identités: actes du colloque international organisé au Havre les 11, 12 et 13 juin 2014, Editions Klog , 2014, s. 521-528Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The digital society of today is dramatically different than that of a decade ago. During the past decades computers have gone from being clearly visible and at the center of attention to becoming an integrated and omnipresent part of our everyday lives. Today, individuals are catching up on a reality where homes, workplaces and society to a large extent consist of microprocessors that collect, analyze and present information. With regards to news and information sharing, it may seem that the users, thanks to greater ability to choose content, hold the upper hand in this process. However, since these data are constantly collected and analyzed for various purposes by companies, for example in the media industry, the users’ choices may not be as unconditional as they may think they are.Using the Swedish media market as an example, this exploratory paper discusses the interdependency between people’s choices and the market-driven choices made by the media industry in relation to news, and the impact these choices may have on media consumption and the media market.

“Anyone else think she is a badass in this music video?”: En kvalitativ analys av Beyoncé Knowles och Miley Cyrus feministiska uttryck utifrån respektives musikvideor samt publika mottagande på Youtube2017Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study has been to examine how Beyoncé Knowles’ and Miley Cyrus’ feminism is articulated through the visual experience of their music videos. It’s also meant to look at what users on Youtube choose to either praise or criticize on said videos. The theories used here are, aside from previous studies on different types of feminism, based on discourse theory, semiotics, and branches of feminism such as radical feminism, postfeminism and black feminism. The methods of this study are, mainly, a semiotic analysis of the popstars music videos, and a discourse analysis of a portion of the comments.

The result showed that both pop stars accentuate different forms of feminist acts which can be perceived differently depending on what type of feminist approach one looks at them through. If you share the viewpoints of postfeminism, you’ll most likely find Miley Cyrus’ empowering to female to a certain extent, and if you’re more into the radical feminist viewpoint you’re not gonna like her feminism, but all in all most acts can be found empowering in one way or another depending on how much one is ready to negotiate.

    Abstract [en]

This essay aims to explore how Syrian immigrants in Sweden perceived their media habits in Syria, how the media were used when they decided to move to Sweden and what kind of role media had for them when they settled in their new home country. The study also examines what functions media had in different places based on immigrants' own experiences and how the Syrians themselves experience the media as a part of meeting a new culture. To examine this in detail, a qualitative interview method was used in which six Syrian immigrants residing in Umeå were given the opportunity to share their experiences from Syria and their relocation story to Sweden. This was done with the media use in focus. The people were selected by the snowball method because the hypothesis was that the Syrian immigrants in the city hold together and know other Syrian people in the town with similar experiences. The study found that media use in Syria was mainly governed by the social situation and whether it was war or not. During the war, many of the interviewees used to keep themselves updated about the war in order to feel safe. Many also knew that the media were regulated by the state, but adapted to it and to the available media offering. In connection with the move to Sweden, the media was used to get in touch with people who could help them move from one country to another, but also to get information about Sweden and the Swedish culture as a way to prepare for the move. In Sweden, the Syrian interviewees chose two different strategies in the meeting with the Swedish culture. One strategy was to be able to integrate as quickly as possible into the Swedish society and the use of almost only Swedish media was a part of it. For the other group, it was more about wanting to move back to Syria after the war and this group mostly used media from the country of origin.

    Abstract [en]

The modern workplace is dependent on effective communication in order for the employees to be able to execute their tasks. Despite this over half of the new communications-solutions that are inserted to handle an organizations communication needs fail. Therefore this study focuses on the adoption of communication-solutions in the context of the modern workplace. This with the intent of identifying factors that are central to the individuals’ adoption of new communication-solutions. To this end a qualitative study was done through semi-structured interviews with ten respondents from four different organizations that recently inserted a new communication-solution. The findings of this study points to three factors as central for the adoption of a communication-solution. These are the existing information ecology, education and motivation. Organization should consider these three factors in order to contribute to the individual workers successful adoption of a new communication-solution. Although this study has a limited scope, tendencies the point towards the three factors that has been identified as central for the adoption of a communication-solution can be observed. More research within this field is needed to confirm the findings of this study.

    Abstract [en]

Constructed Reality: A Critical Discourse Analysis of News Texts Surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict After the United States’ Recognition of Jerusalem as the Capital of Israel. Within hours the American announcement was international news with an almost unanimous UN Security Council condemning the act. The purpose of this study is to examine how the conflict is constructed in news articles from Sweden's two largest daily newspapers as well as two largest evening papers, ranging a week from the US recognition of Jerusalem. The study is conducted with a starting point in theoretical perspectives that deal with the media’s influence of people's perceptions of reality and their world view. The methods applied are first and foremost the overarching model of critical discourse analysis, with a combination of quantitative content analysis and qualitative text analysis. The study concludes that overwhelmingly, the newspapers represented the parties involved (Israelis and Palestinians) in a balanced, neutral fashion. The newspapers were however not as balanced and neutral when it came to which sources were cited.

    Abstract [en]

The conditions for organizations today has fundamentally changed as a result of

digitalization and digital innovation processes has become a central part in an organization's

continued work to handle changing requirements and needs. Arbetsförmedlingens

Innovationscenter is a new department that has been established as a part of the authority’s

journey towards digital renewal with the ambition to visualize digital opportunity for

tomorrow's labour market. A knowledge gap has been identified concerning how a public

organization through an innovation initiative manage the continuously increasing

expectations for them to work innovative and digitally. To close this gap an explorative case

study is conducted to study the role Innovationscenter plays in Arbetsförmedlingens work

with digital innovation. A conceptual framework is then created based on research on value

creation and innovation processes which is then used to study the empiricism. The study

shows that Innovationscenters role is mainly one of external monitoring, organisational

development and marketing. The conclusion is that Innovationscenter spends more time

inspiring than innovating and argumentation is presented concerning the importance of

creating the relevant structures to go from inspiration to innovation.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to investigate how the same murder case is being portrayedin three of Swedens biggest true crime podcasts; P3 Dokumentär, True Crime Sweden and Mordpodden. The case that has been studied is the murder of 15 year old Therese Johansson Rojo who was killed in June 2009. She was found dead in a forest in Stureby, Stockholm in Sweden and later on a 16 year old boy and his 16 year old girlfriend got arrested for the murder. Both of them were found guilty, the boy for murder and the girl for conspiracy to commit murder. The study examined similarities and differences in how the three main characters are described in the different podcasts and how gender is being represented. To achieve valid and reliable arguments and results, we have supported our statements in theories and previous research related to crime, gender and framing inmedia. The method that has been used in this study is a qualitative study including toolsas lexicality, modality and rhetoric. The analysis is divided in three parts, one for each main character and with two themes for each part, how their looks and personality are described in the different podcasts. The analysis showed that all three podcasts portray the main characters in similar ways. There is a lot of focus on the looks of the victim, Therese who is being portrayed as a stereotypic girl. She is also described as the ideal victim as a young and innocent girl. The mainly focus is however, especially in Mordpodden and in True crime Sweden, on the 16 year old girl and 16 year old boy and their relationship with each other. The boy and the girl are being described with dichotomies and are not portrayed, unlike Therese, as typical gender stereotypes. The 16 year old girl is mostly described as controlling and the boy is often described as an innocent victim. This means that the girl is being portrayed as masculine and the boy as feminin. By describing Thereseas the ideal victim and the perpetrators based on dichotomies, the podcasts create gender, based on Fagerström and Nilssons (2008) theory about how gender is being created.

Multi-dimensional focus of IT Strategic approach for Value Co-creation: A study of customer’s experience in online banking service system2013Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Service-dominant logic is the co-creation of value-in-use with service systems resources and customers. This study aims to approach strategy for value co-creation process from customer’s perspectives on self-service technology. For that, a case study was conducted about the customer’s experiences on creating the values when using the online banking service. The thesis begins with the introduction about the potential of IT in service-dominant logic with service systems, related literature and theoretical framework of value co-creation as value-in-use/value co-destruction. Further, this study has analyzed the risk factors, challenges and complexities that occurred in service systems in the perspective of value-in-use/value co-destruction. Based on the findings, I have approached the multi-dimensional focus of IT strategic (flexibility, comfortability, effective information entity and customer-centric network) approach to increase customer participation in value co-creation process. This approach could be helpful to improve the quality of service systems in self-service technology and to understand customer’s reality during value creation process.

Digital transformation: the material roles of IT resources and their political uses2015Doktorsavhandling, sammanläggning (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

As IT became ubiquitous, we recognized that IT was everywhere but in our theories. Despite significant efforts, Information System (IS) research is still in desperate search for the IT artifact. Recent reviews show that IS research first and foremost considers IT resources as a socio-technical and managerial concern. Analyses of inertia are restricted to cognitive limitations or technical challenges of IT development and use as separate activities. Hence, IS research assumes that more development resources, extended training, and better management could turn most failures into success. In this thesis, I posit that IS strategy research often treats normal failure as unexpected to maintain the rational idea that managers are in control and that IT does not matter in and of itself. I argue that planned and convergent views of change work well under stable and unitary conditions but in this way fail to account for the complexity of current IS strategy practice. To substantiate this claim, I demonstrate how IS research routinely neglects the material IT use story in the context of digital transformation (DT) studies and social informatics. Political conflict is a constant theme in IS strategy implementation research, yet few studies provided explanation for the apprehension that managers and workers display during the introduction of new IT resources; even as most managers remain men I found also no study that theorized gender politics as related to IS strategy outcomes. I argue in particular that the IS fields routine adherence to borrowed assumptions about the pace, linearity, and sequence of radical change have limited IS scholars to marginally improve on received DT narratives in which IT plays little or no part as IT appears as an agent mostly before and after DT. Though much is said about how IT triggers and enables organizational change, the actual processes and mechanisms that underlies IS strategy change enactments are thus poorly understood. To examine how the material roles of IT resources and their political use can be captured and explained, I summarize and synthesize insights grounded in empirics from four appended research papers. In this way, I chart avenues for material theorizing of micro-affordances and institutions, and develop an IS strategy-as-practice lens that attends IT use as a material practice. After developing this lens, I discuss how material practice perspectives afford deep understanding of the materialities through which actors create, sustain, and transform organizational practice with digital material, and highlight some opportunities to observe the social consequences of IT use in the context of critical studies on men and masculinities and digital gender.

Strategy Blindness as Disciplined IT-use Practice: Looking Past the 'Unintended and Unexpected' through the Practice Lens2016Ingår i: 2016 49th Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Science (HICSS), IEEE Computer Society, 2016, s. 4644-4653Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Strategy blindness is commonly understood as an unexpected outcome of IS strategy implementation that results as users make sense of new IT resources in unintended ways. What could be learned by instead treating strategy blindness expected? To this end, this paper unpacks some common assumptions of strategic failure and presents an alternative assumption ground. To explain how masculinites form sources of strategy failure, I reanalyze IT use at a Swedish paper-mill as negotiated among rough and respectable men: blue-collar workers and white-collar managers are shown to maintain distinct hierarchies yet enact the same fixed IT use reality; in each case, intimate relations to the paper machine dictated their ways. Power plays of optimization and mastery illustrate each identity. I then critique current ideas in strategic management and received notions of how IT matters in strategy practice.

    Abstract [en]

Past research on gender online has made important land gains but under-theorizes the Internet as a passive, fixed, and somewhat insubstantial space or context. By contrast, this special issue draws on new material thinking to put into questions the very notion of “cyberspace” as a distinct realm. In this vein, the contents of this issue critically examine how the Internet and related digital technologies actively “work” to maintain or transform systems of oppression, as displayed, for example, in the digital doing(s) of gender. They also show how digital technologies and related concepts can be used to challenge current understandings of race, class, and gender and to produce and provoke new forms of knowledge. While the contents of this issue are drawn from different fields and display great diversity, the individual contributions of each author helps to chart out three potent venues for future Internet research: namely digital gender as perspective, phenomena, and practice.

Outflanking with information technology: a dialectic model of organizational transformationManuskript (preprint) (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

The information systems (IS) literature conveys two opposing narratives of how to create radical organizational transformation (OT) with information technology (IT): “Iron fist” scholars argue that such OT is best achieved by resolute leaders capable of driving episodic change by fiat, while “velvet glove” scholars posit that OT is best induced incrementally by compassionate leaders who nurture shared vision and minimize conflict. These narratives portray implicitly gendered management stereotypes and promote accounts of heroism. Built to celebrate deliberate managerial action, they also brush aside back-stage work necessary for successful IS strategy implementation and cast IT in the marginal role of a trigger for or enabler of OT. To address these shortcomings, we advance a dialectic model of OT that views IT as a material change agent. To synthesize insights from these opposing narratives of change, our dialectic model also interrogates dominant assumptions in received OT theory. The model is motivated by an unexpected and intriguing case of OT in a Swedish municipality where initially peripheral actors used IT to gradually bring about a much-contested radical change to the organization’s service logics. These actions resembled the military tactics founded on stealth and surprise that military leaders use to overcome overwhelming enemies; therefore, we term the new OT narrative “outflanking.” The narrative foregrounds three tactical IT uses—shielding, priming, and enrolling—that the actors deployed to overcome the opposition. As a result, we theorize that the role of novel IT uses is a necessary component of contemporary OT. Following a call for analyses of OT that recognize material effects of IT, the article concludes with a discussion of how managers can strike alliances with peripheral actors to render their organizations more dynamic, and how researchers need better articulate the complexity of the current IT-based OT.

To make or fake sense of information technology?: strategic ambiguity as a source of radical changeManuskript (preprint) (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

While Information Technology (IT) resources signal different meanings to different actors, strategy scholarship advocates the establishing of tight links between the functional role and strategic purpose of IT resources. Particularly, the “interpretative flexibility” of IT resources is depicted as an obstacle for effective strategy implementation that needs to be overcome through planned deployment, training, and control. We challenge this conventional assumption. Through applying a practice lens in a qualitative multi-site case study, we identify four types of IT resource configurations, theorizing IT resource ambiguity as a source for radical change. Ultimately, we observe how, when, and why ambiguous uses of IT can form critical elements of new IT strategy practices, and suggest several implications of the observed IT resource ambiguity for strategy and management research.

Multi-Person Infrared Pupil Tracking for 3D TV without Glasses2012Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The success of recent 3-D stereoscopic movies such as Avatar has created a lot of attention for 3-D in the home. Almost all major consumer electronics (CE) manufacturers have launched their 3-D stereoscopic displays in the market. A problem with those solutions is that viewers have to wear glasses. Glasses-free autostereoscopic 3-D displays typically use lenticular lenses or barriers to create multiple views. However these displays suffer from a number of issues: inverted views at viewing cone transitions, cross-talk between views, and need for multi-view content.  As Philips Electronics research group, we believe that some of these issues can be reduced by using pupil tracking. In the research process, we began with an extensive literature study on people detection and tracking techniques that helped us to understand the benefits and the shortcomings of different applications. Addition to literature studies, we greatly benefited from constant experimentation with prototypes and the hands-on experience with variety of digital and optical components under different conditions. As a result, we designed a multi-person infrared pupil tracker and multi-view renderer for 3D display to adapt the view rendering in real-time according to viewer’s position. Together with the integration of these two applications, the integrated 3D TV successfully adapts the center view according to position of the viewer and able to provide a smooth transition while the viewer actively changes her position from a notable distance under ambient illumination. However, even though the pupil tracker is implemented for multiple people, because of the time limitation and the complexity of the problem regarding multi-view renderer, the integrated system functions only for one person.   Exploring the employed technique, in-depth description and detailed illustration of designed applications and the conclusions drawn from the implemented system; we believe that this paper forms a substantial guidance and show-how source for further research in the field of 3D display and people tracking methods.

Digitala modeller: teknikhistoria och digitaliseringens specificitet2019Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This paper describes the efforts in ensuring research relevance by means of an industrial PhD project. The project is aiming at strengthening the relevance of research and development by educating scientists with an insight into the practical aspects of research and development and by developing networks in which knowledge can be effectively disseminated between industry and university. The project is taking its stand with an empirical and industrial centre with a technical solution called Dynamo, which is delivered by the company Logica. Dynamo, an intelligent portal that seamlessly connects systems, user information, roles and rule sets, and its context will provide a rich and useful empirical source from which to launch the action research process. The project contains two distinct stakeholders – industry and academy – jointly guiding the project and making sure that both worlds get a result that is in line with and contributes to their business. To this end two key stakeholders that have taken on the role as gatekeepers of rigor and relevance respectively. Taking position in the middle of the action is the PhD student who, by living the life of both researcher and consultant, will take on the role of balancing rigor and relevance. The chosen research approach together with the complex implementation context together with makes it crucial to take on an open minded selection.

From Technological Transitions to Service Transitions: A Study of Attenuation Effects in IT Service Provisioning2015Ingår i: Journal of Information Technology Services, ISSN 1975-4256, Vol. 14, nr 2, s. 337-354Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In a day and age when contemporary businesses are transformed, driven by a service-dominance logic and dependent upon IT, we need to understand how firms cope with technological adaptations and how such technological adaptations can lead to service adaptations. Drawing on a framework on technological transitions and an interpretive longitudinal case study of the services provided by a team within a large public IT firm, this article addresses the following questions:How do service transitions come about? Can we distinguish particular patterns in service transition processes? This research unveils how technological and social dimensions mutually constitute each other within development and implementation of service provisioning. The findings show how:(a) IT plays a fundamental role in service provisioning; (b) technological transitions are the necessary but insufficient preconditions for service transitions; and (c) there are attenuation effects when it comes to the move from technology transition to service transition.

The role of context in managing information infrastructure services2010Ingår i: ICIS 2010 Proceedings, AIS Electronic Library (AISeL) , 2010Konferensbidrag (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

Contemporary organizations are increasingly dependent on information infrastructures to deliver their services. However, information infrastructures are highly complex and dynamic, which lead to considerable management challenges. This research aims to contribute to our understanding of these challenges through an in-depth investigation of a team responsible for information infrastructure services at a large business and technology service company. The complexity and dynamics faced by the team emphasizes the important role of context in managing its information infrastructure services and underlying technology platform. To investigate the team’s practice we therefore adopt contextualist inquiry in combination with a pluralist approach based on four complementary theoretical lenses; technological frames of references, risk management, control versus drift, and dynamic capabilities. As contributions, this research has the dual goal to improve the teams’ practices while at the same time providing new theoretical insights about the role of context in management of information infrastructure services.

    Abstract [sv]

“The government is watching – don’t step on their toes”: An investigation of the press freedom and the working conditions for journalists in Tanzania2019Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

According to reports from Reporters sans frontiers and Freedom House, the freedom of the press has declined during the recent years in the sub-Saharan country Tanzania. Using the human rights reports as an entry point, this study set out to investigate the working conditions for journalists in the capital de facto of Tanzania, Dar es Salaam. An important aim was to dig deeper and show the local and culturally specific conditions. The study supports that the press freedom, as well as the working conditions have declined during the last years for the journalists in Dar es Salaam. However, the study also shows that the new laws and government measures, described by the human rights reports as reducing the press freedom, is not considered by every journalist to be negative. The challenges differ among the corps of journalists, as their values of journalism differs. The greatest denominator among the informants was the high-degree of journalistic interventionism, directed at helping the society. In some cases, this took form as a practice of development journalism. The strong connections to the local community, the country and the religious affiliations are thought to contribute to these values. For journalists in private media, the press freedom was found to be the most acute problem, while for journalists in state-owned media it was economic issues. The press freedom was connected to the perceived job autonomy, and senior journalists and journalists working for international media were found to be more autonomous. Self-censorship was used by many in the private media sector as a tool to avoid both bureaucratic harassment from government, as well as violent repercussions. The main challenges included new restricting laws, economic issues which lead to the practice of brown envelopes, the parliament being located in Dodoma, gender-issues, scared sources and the advancement of social media. Theories and earlier research evolving from the values of journalism and journalism in Africa were used as tools to understand and compare with. The results are based on fieldwork conducted during a period of two months in the beginning of 2019, with qualitative interviews held with journalists in the city of Dar es Salaam.

Vad innebär övergången till Scrum?: En studie som undersöker hur Scrum påverkar systemutvecklingsarbetet i globala organisationer2013Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [sv]

Currently many organizations are transitioning from the traditional approach to the agile approach regarding systems development methods. It is evident that research has mainly focused on smaller organizations transitioning, whilst less focus has been given t0 larger organizations. We find this interesting and the purpose of this study is to gain a deeper and broader knowledge concerning the following research question: How is system development work affected by a change from traditional system development methods to Scrum in large global organizations. We also investigate how Scrum can be adapted to complex projects with an internal client. The study is based on a case study, which takes a qualitative approach with semi-structured interviews for information gathering and was conducted on a major Swedish telecom company. The company initiated the transition process approximately two years ago, with the transition still ongoing. The study indicates that the main reason for adopting the agile way of working was to optimize the development process by enhancing the effectiveness. Furthermore additional effects that were gained due to the change, for example a higher grade of team spirit and a more transparent development process. Furthermore we identified where the organization had made changes on the method, Scrum, this due to different reasons such as company size and the complex nature of the projects. Finally, the study showed that even though an organization choose to embrace agile methods, the practical context in which it is introduced can lead to it being adapted to the point where it deviates from its most central theoretical underpinnings.

Title: Is it you or your gender who decides?

    • A kvantitative study about how leading Swedish evening newspapers rapports about cardio- and weighttraining.

The purpose of this thesis was to examine how leading Swedish evening newspapers portray the concepts of cardio- and weight training aimed towards men and women in the years of 2003 and 2013. The result has first been discussed separately and thereafter been compared in order to identify similarities and differences.  The assumption by the gender researcher, Gunilla Jarlbro, that women are grossly overrepresented is further strengthened in this thesis. The result of the thesis clearly shows that women are grossly overrepresented in both the year of 2003 and 2013. Furthermore, the result showed that unhealthiness is the theme dominating these texts.

The result also showed that texts about working out have to a large extent become integrated into medias overall news coverage. Describing and inspiring articles illustrated with photos in 2003 has been replaced with short and informative news texts in the year of 2013. One possible explanation to this development could be that texts about training has been integrated in the “ordinary’’ news coverage as a way to meet consumers needs and interests, since the evening newspapers does not have subscribers and instead relies on selling single copies.

Other result that has been drawn out of the empirical material was that men and women were expected to achieve different outcomes from their respective training; in general, men should become big/muscular and strong while women should loose weight or transform/shape specific parts of the body.

    Abstract [en]

The technological development of digital devices and the rapid increase in global internet usage has forever changed our lives. Ever since Sweden joined the European Union in 1995 it has been under the person data protection directive (95/46/EG) from the same year. Today, more than two decades later a new international regulation will take its place. This will result in major changes in how companies and organizations must handle personal data. Every company and organization within every country within the European Union must adapt to these changes or risk paying rather fees. Not only does this affect the national laws across a continent and companies like Facebook and Sony on a grand scale - but it also affects the local organizations, small companies, and municipalities. It can be hard to understand what this regulation really means and what should be done to follow it. To do that, the entire work process must be redrawn to provide the best protection possible for the individual citizen. The study shows the work progress of a municipality that is in this position and is in need to adjust its work progress. The study shows how they are adapting to the new changes and are dealing with the problems to be ready when the regulation goes live on May 25th, 2018.

Anthropomorphic design and anticipated user experience: A two-step provocational design study of the user experience of smart anthropomorphic products2019Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

We often see anthropomorphic designs in movies as highly intelligent robots, created to make our lives easier, but anthropomorphic is far more common than that. From cameras that look like eyes to face and voice recognition technology and avatars used by companies to support their brands. Despite this, relatively little research has been made about anthropomorphism in smart everyday products, and how that affects the anticipated user experience. Two provocative studies were conducted, where the participants provided their first impressions to picture prototypes. This generated an understanding of the general opinion of anthropomorphic designs, and when added a smart daily product. These studies showed that people are open to the idea of anthropomorphic designs, but the practicality and functionality are crucial. Through identification of multiple themes and thorough analysis, this study can serve as a blueprint to aid future studies about the anticipated user experience of smart daily products with anthropomorphic elements.

    Abstract [en]

Viral communication method is shown to be useful for spreading messages in social media. However, only few studies have investigated how public organizations use this method successfully to promote their works in social media. To fill this gap, a qualitative analysis on data from observations and interviews has been conducted. The purpose of this study is to answer a research question: how can a government succeed in promoting their works in social media by using viral communication method? The results found several processes and factors that support the fruitfulness from three perspectives: the messenger, the message and the environment. Moreover, it is pointed out that the most important process is creating memorable messages. Therefore, this study proposes essential characteristics of memorable contents.

Open Innovation strategy: Exploring challenges and opportunities2015Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Innovation strategy has been playing an important role on innovation development in industrial firms. Extant studies have investigated in particular open innovation strategy.  By using a qualitative case study, I have conducted a research in an Indonesian R&D firm that has implemented an open innovation strategy. The purpose of this research is to add more information and confirm existing knowledge by exploring challenges and opportunities during the implementation of an open innovation strategy. I identify many challenges which are found in several aspects of innovation development such as collaboration management, assets protection and accessing external knowledge. Furthermore, the opportunities that I found are related with enhancement of license strategy, nurture of employee’s loyalty and establishment of various collaboration forms. These challenges and opportunities occurred due to the influence of the openness paradigm. The results of this study also confirm previous research result on the adoption of the partly open innovation scheme and the layered collaboration scheme.

RQ: what are the firm-level challenges and opportunities with using an open innovation strategy?

Keep on Tracking: Understanding the long term use of personal informatics systems2016Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Personal Informatics (PI) systems common trending theme is fitness, which in turn is a trending theme in human-computer interaction. These systems have been the focus of a handful of studies. So far, the research that has been conducted merely focuses on the technical details of such services and few investigate the longitudinal use of PI systems. Even though fitness is a popular area, still personal informatics systems designed for this purpose suffer from short-term use. Therefore, there is a need to design systems that encourages users for prolong use. The prolonged use of digital artifacts is an issue of sustainable interaction design. The purpose of this thesis is to explore the design space of personal informatics fitness systems through the lens of sustainable interaction design. This thesis aims at investigating motives and intentions behind the longitudinal use of personal informatics fitness systems. This thesis argues that by adopting the lens of sustainable interaction design we can find ways of designing PI systems with prolonged use for the users. Based on the findings the thesis ends by suggesting a guideline for designing personal informatics fitness systems which will hopefully help interaction designers and researchers alike.

In this paper, we report the results from the psychologicalassessment conducted using a test battery composed of cognitiveand social wellbeing tests and questionnaires performed by usersand controls that participated in the AGNES project in Spain,Sweden and Greece at the beginning of the study and after thedeployment of the first prototype. The project carries out noveltechnological interventions in an emerging area in ageingresearch. The main innovation is the integration of differenttechnological components and social networking to provide anovel solution to the ageing population living at home. Themotivation was based on relevant findings on the psychology ofageing and the need for technologies to support the ageingpopulation. End-users have been heavily involved, providingdesign input, continuum evaluation and feedback. Theprojectfocuses on improving the mental and physical wellbeing ofelderly people living at home, who often suffer the effects ofsocial and physical isolation including cognitive decline, lowactivity levels and poor mood states. The main results were thatthe users but not the control participants improved cognitiveperformance andthe feeling of being treated with respect, beingindependent, self-realization and greater achievement.

The Role of a New ICT Home Environment in Healthy Ageing2012Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The goal of this longitudinal study was to prevent and/or delay cognitive decline, and help maintain the independence and wellbeing of elders by using a web-based social network platform, enhanced with devices to detect users´ states and collect activity data. The idea is that an active lifestyle rich in social interactions, active engagement and mental training with videogames may mitigate age-related decline and reduce healthcare costs. The innovative applications and the videogame training approach developed in the study could have wide application for a large number of European older adults living alone. The effectiveness of the ICT solution is being assessed throughout the project with user and control groups in Spain, Sweden and Greece. User interviews, extensive psychological testing and on-going cognitive and fMRI experiments are being conducted.. The results have shown so far that the users improved in cognitive performance compared to controls on the MMSE. Well-being assessed with the SPF-IL Scale also showed an improvement in the Status dimension of the users. This dimension assesses the feeling of being independent, self-realization and achievement. Exploring new ways to maintain the cognitive and functional state of older users is today a critical issue, for individuals, for families, and for whole societies. The study has shown the positive potential of new interactive technologies to maintain mental health and independent living in the elderly. Computer technology and cognitive training can increase social integration and provide mental stimulation for older adults living alone.

A randomized controlled trial of brain training with non-action video games in older adults: results of the 3-month follow-up2015Ingår i: Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience, ISSN 1663-4365, E-ISSN 1663-4365, Vol. 7, artikel-id UNSP 45Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This randomized controlled study (ClinicalTrials.gov NCT02007616)investigated the maintenance of training effects of 20 1-hr non-action video gametraining sessions with selected games from a commercial package on several agedecliningcognitive functions and subjective wellbeing after a 3-month no-contactperiod. Two groups of cognitively normal older adults participated in both the posttraining(posttest) and the present follow-up study, the experimental group who receivedtraining and the control group who attended several meetings with the research teamduring the study but did not receive training. Groups were similar at baseline ondemographics, vocabulary, global cognition, and depression status. Significant improvements in the trained group, and no variation in the control group had been previously found at posttest, in processing speed, attention and visual recognition memory, as well as in two dimensions of subjective wellbeing. In the current study, improvement from baseline to 3 months follow-up was found only in wellbeing (Affection and Assertivity dimensions) in the trained group whereas there was no change in the control group. Previous significant improvements in processing speed, attentionand spatial memory become nonsignificant after the 3-month interval. Training olderadults with non-action video games enhanced aspects of cognition just after training butthis effect disappeared after a 3-month no-contact follow-up period. Cognitive plasticitycan be induced in older adults by training, but to maintain the benefits periodic boosting sessions would be necessary.

    An ICT-mediated social network in support of successful ageing2014Ingår i: Gerontechnology, ISSN 1569-1101, E-ISSN 1569-111X, Vol. 13, nr 1, s. 37-46Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Background The idea is that an active lifestyle rich in social interactions and active engagement may mitigate age-related decline and reduce healthcare costs. The main aim of the AGNES project was to investigate the potential of new Information and Communication Technology (ICT) environments to help maintain the independence and wellbeing of elders. The innovative applications developed in this research project could have wide application for a large number of older adults living alone.  Method We used a web-based social network platform, enhanced with devices to detect users´ states and collect activity data. The effectiveness of the ICT-based solution was assessed throughout the project with user and control groups in Spain, Sweden and Greece. User interviews and psychological testing were conducted at the beginning of the project and after a year of deployment of the equipment. Both groups completed the same assessment protocol. Results & discussion We found that only the user group showed an improvement from pretest to posttest in the affective dimension of the wellbeing SPF-IL scale. This dimension relates to the degree of confidence, social acceptance, and level of satisfaction with the people around them. Exploring new ways to maintain the cognitive and functional state of older users is today a critical issue, for individuals, their families, and for whole societies. The study suggests the potential of AGNES to improve older adults’ perceived wellbeing. However, more research may be needed to determine if AGNES is a tool to maintain mental health and independent living in older adults, especially those with MCI.

    Abstract [sv]

UX Gap: Analysis of User Experience Awareness in practitioners’ perspective2016Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Many within the industry, including designers, recognize the need to consider UX as the key to designing new products and services. As a consequence of this, the territory of UX has extended into many different industries and different disciplines. However, some practitioners still claim a UX project does not pay off even if they have improved UX. This way of thinking is induced from an old issue of UX. The term itself does not have a clear theoretical definition and it even makes a contradiction of itself. This phenomenon further aggravates the issue. The rapid expansion of UX territory made a gap between academia and practitioners. This research attempts to measure and examine the gap between academia and practitioners. A survey was conducted to observe how aware practitioners are of UX and their ability to recognize it as compared to the recent academia’s research.

DevOps: An explorative case study on the challenges and opportunities in implementing Infrastructure as code2019Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Over the last few years, DevOps has gained much attention in the IT development field. It is a new way of thinking of how developers and operators work, which aim to integrate the development, testing, and operation work efficiently. DevOps breaks down communication silos, improve collaboration and productivity by automating infrastructure deployment, workflows, continuously improving the integration and delivery process, and measuring the application performance indicators. Automation is crucial in DevOps, and a key aspect of automation is “Infrastructure as code (IaC)”.

IaC allows companies to manage and maintain their infrastructure resources such as virtual machines, load balancers, firewalls, and network devices programmatically in codes instead of manual processes and procedures. As a result, companies will be able to provision and deploy these infrastructure resources consistently, increase the rate of software delivery and improve the time to market, which in turns lead to a substantial competitive advantage. Previous research call for an examination of the gained opportunities and the challenges that can be faced in implementing IaC. Understanding these challenges and opportunities and their implications allow the companies to know why IaC can be interesting for them? And what and how changes should be done to adopt IaC. This paper presents a qualitative study that aims to illustrate the opportunities and challenges in implementing Infrastructure as a code. This paper will also present how infrastructure used to be managed in physical datacenter and cloud systems, and how agile, DevOps and IaC affect the infrastructure management. Our findings show considerable benefits in adopting IaC, and some challenges might be encountered when implementing IaC. Furthermore, the study acknowledges the role of agile, cloud systems, and DevOps in facilitating the implementation of Infrastructure as a code.

Applying Experience Design to Facilitate Wellbeing and Social Inclusion of Older Adults2018Ingår i: IxD&A: Interaction Design and Architecture(s), ISSN 1826-9745, E-ISSN 2283-2998, nr 36, s. 11-30Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The current article addresses the issue of how to design for meaningful experiences of wellbeing and social inclusion, supported by information and communication technology, among older adults. This is done with regard to a background study conducted for the purpose of collecting end user needs in order to inform design choices. Our design approach is influenced by the theory of Experience Design, in which design should be aimed at creating specific experiences. These experiences are considered to derive from a limited number of fundamental human needs. The study is framed as design research using the methodology of user-centred design as a guide for the creative process. Semi-structured focus group interviews were conducted with 25 older adults, identifying needs of autonomy, competence, relatedness, physical thriving, security, pleasure and stimulation. Design goals were set based on these needs and three interventions were designed and implemented accordingly.
