    Abstract [en]

    Introduction: Self-efficacy for writing (SEW) and reading ability are some of several factors that may be related to the quality of written text that students produce. The aim of the current study was (1) to explore the variation in SEW and written text quality in L1-Swedish and L2-English among upper secondary students with different reading profiles in L1 (typical reading vs. reading difficulties) and with different study backgrounds (SB1year or SB2years = one or two years of studies of Swedish and English, respectively), and in the next step (2) to explore if individual variations in L1-reading and SEW may explain variation in written text quality.

    Methods: Participants were 100 upper secondary students (aged 17–18) with different reading profiles operationalized as typical reading and reading difficulties. Data consisted of screening for word recognition and reading comprehension, text quality results from argumentative L1- and L2-writing tasks, school information on study background in Swedish/English, and students' responses from an online survey about SEW.

    Results: As to SEW results, an ANOVA revealed significant main effects for reading profile and study background in L1, but in L2 there was only a significant main effect for reading profile. Written text quality results indicated that there was a significant interaction effect between reading profile and study background in L1, indicating that the significant main effect for reading profile on written text quality was influenced by the group of students with reading difficulties and SB1year. There was a significant main effect for reading profile and study background on written text quality in L2. Students with reading difficulties and SB1year were the most vulnerable group, and they had the lowest scores in L1/L2 SEW and written text quality in L1 and L2. Multiple regression results indicated that word recognition and SEW contributed significantly to L1-text quality, and word recognition, reading comprehension, and SEW contributed significantly to L2-text quality. Thus, this study sheds light on the under-researched area of L1/L2 SEW and text quality of students with reading difficulties at the level of upper secondary school.

    Discussion: Pedagogical implications are discussed and highlight the need for writing instruction across subjects in upper secondary school and for extra writing support/scaffolding for students with reading difficulties and shorter study background in the language subjects L1 (Swedish) and L2 (English).

    Abstract [en]

    This study aims to investigate the representation of Latin America in verbal and visual text in Swedish textbooks for Spanish teaching. More specifically, this analysis examines how much of the text is represented by Latin American people in comparison to European people, how Latin Americans are represented and how large the prevalence of each form of representation is, as well as which verbal and visual patterns are present in the textbooks. A quantitative content analysis was used to examine the study's question regarding the extent of the different text forms. The method of the analysis for the remaining questions surrounding the representation of Latin Americans was based on a multimodal critical discourse analysis with a social semiotic approach. The result indicates that Latin Americans comprise a smaller proportion of the extent of text than Europeans. Based on the results of the analysis of representation, the textbooks differed to some extent in the representation of Latin Americans, but the common patterns made visible were that Latin Americans are most often portrayed as impersonal and socially distanced in relation to the recipient. Finally, the result of analysis is problematized in relation to the didactic implications that can be brought about while teaching and the importance of teachers having and teaching critical literacy is highlighted.

    Abstract [en]

    Ivan Aleksandrovich Aksenov (1884–1935), a writer, poet, critic, and translator, was a remarkable representative of the avant-garde movement in Russia, who strongly influenced nearly every sphere of Russian cultural life, including translation theory and Shakespeare translation in particular. Nevertheless, his contribution to Russian culture has long remained forgotten. This paper explores Aksenov’s unique contribution to the early Shakespeare studies in Soviet Union: his work on the translation of Elizabethan dramatists and his translations of Shakespeare, as well his theoretical writings that positioned Shakespeare in the context of socialist realism and Soviet cultural politics of the 1930s.

    Abstract [en]

    Absurdity and nonsense are usually studied as philosophical and/or logical categories. This paper examines nonsense as a semiotic phenomenon and as part of the mechanisms of meaning generation, and argues that the problem of nonsense and meaning as a whole is foremost a textual problem. This approach is based on the legacy of the semiotician and literary scholar Iurii Lotman, and especially his concepts of explosion and the notions of "non-text" and "minus-device. " The concept of nonsense thus highlights the inherent informational paradox of human culture and human communication systems, in which noise, errors and mishaps do not impede communication but on the contrary, stimulate it. On a larger scale the example of how human cultures deal with 'non-sense' in communication has implications for the study of the evolution of human culture and language and also draws additional light to the methodological problem of the text/sign relation.

    Narrating Gypsies, Telling Travellers: A Sudy of the Relational Self in Four Life Stories2006Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    To say that Gypsy and/or Traveller and/or Romany life stories have existed on the periphery of literary studies can be considered an understatement. In this study of the relational self, Narrating Gypsies, Telling Travellers, examines the discursive and structural complexities involved in the practices of writing and speaking in the production process and narrative trajectories of the life stories of Gordon Sylvester Boswell (1970), Nan Joyce (1985), Jimmy Stockins (2000), and Jess Smith (2002 and 2003).

    The study emphasizes relational aspects of self-construction, which includes links to the national (hi)stories of Scotland, Ireland and England. Beginning with an eighteenth-century scaffold confession and moving through colonial, post-colonial, national and internal colonial narratives, the study follows a discursive path that re-emerges and reverberates in the spoken and/or written words of the story narrators. The study problemetizes the effectiveness of resistance as the historical depth and relationally produced dual-nature of domination is analysed. Above all the study positions modes of domination and self-domination within processes of forgetting forged through consensual, subtle and coercive practices related to points of view and the taken-for-granted.

    Syftet med det här examensarbetet är att komma lite närmare tvåspråkighetens värld och att få en djupare kunskap om detta fascinerande universum. Att lära känna de förhållanden och samspel som skapas mellan individer i det flerspråkiga samhället har blivit allt mer aktuellt och angeläget och därför valde jag det här temat. Forskningsfrågor i detta arbete fokuseras på tvåspråkig inlärning och uppfostran och hur det påverkar individens identitet samt vilka fördelar respektive nackdelar tvåspråkighet innebär. Arbetet är uppbyggt i två delar. Den första baseras på litteratur studier som beskriver tvåspråkighet på ett generellt sätt och den andra på en empirisk studie där jag fokuserar på några av de tvåspråkiga spansktalande barn som bor i Sverige. Som forskningsmetod i den empiriska delen har jag intervjuat 5 tvåspråkiga spansktalande barn mellan 10 och 16 år och deras familjer. Både resultaten från litteraturen och den empiriska studien visade att tvåspråkighet är en tillgång snarare än ett hinder och det också är något helt normalt i majoriteten av världens länder. Människan har alltså kapacitet att lära sig och kommunicera på mer än ett språk och att växla mellan olika språk behöver inte betyda att personen har en fattig vokabulär, det kan vara ett tecken på en välutvecklad språkförmåga. Ett språk är en stor del av en människas identitet och kultur, de människor som har flera språk hittar ofta en jämvikt mellan två olika kulturer och kan se på världen med ett vidare perspektiv. Tvåspråkiga personer är ofta mer öppna och toleranta för meningsskiljaktigheter.

    Der vorliegende Beitrag untersucht Emotionalisierung als persuasive Strategie in Leitartikeln in sieben schwedenschwedischen und finnlandschwedischen Regionalzeitungen. Persuasive Strategie wird in Anlehnung an Schwarz-Friesel (2013: 235) als "kommunikative Verfahrensweisen, die spezifisch rezipientenbeeinflussend, d. h. intentional auf eine bestimmte Wirkung ausgerichtet sind" definiert.

    Methodologisch wird nach Ortner (2014) vorgegangen, jedoch beschränkt sich die Analyse auf die zwei im Material frequentesten Ebenen, die lexikalische und die stilistische. Die Gesamtzahl der analysierten Einheiten beträgt 453.

    Die Analyse hat ergeben, dass etwa 80% der analysierten Einheiten in Form von Einzellexemen oder Phrasemen der lexikalischen Ebene zuzuordnen sind und in unterschiedlichem Ausmaß eine emotionalisierende Wirkung auf die Meinungen der Rezipienten in Bezug auf den jeweiligen Sachverhalt haben können. Ein Vergleich der schwedenschwedischen mit den finnlandschwedischen Einheiten deutet auf eine gewisse Präferenz für den Gebrauch von Metaphern im schwedenschwedischen Material, während im finnlandschwedischen Material die Anzahl expressiver Komposita deutlich höher ist.

    Eine Funktion der Buchrezension ist wie bekannt, den Leser über eine Veröffentlichung zu unterrichten, was in Form einer komprimierten Inhaltsgabe geschieht. Als zweite Hauptfunktion der Rezension kann eine kritische Auseinander­setzung mit dem bespro­chenen Text angesehen werden. Die Rezension soll also dem Leser als Orientierungs- bzw. Entscheidungshilfe für oder gegen eine Lektüre dienen.

    Die informierende und bewertende Funktion der Buchrezensionsindist an unterschied­lichen Stellen des Textes zu finden, auch wenn anzunehmen ist, dass der Schlussteil des Textes eine Art zusammenfassende Bewertung enthält. Unsere bis­herigen Forschungen zu populärwissenschaftlichen Rezensionen in deutschen und schwedischen Tageszei­tungen zeigen, dass dies oft der Fall ist. Eine zusammenfassende Bewertung kann jedoch auch fehlen. Aber wie verhält es sich mit dem Rezensionsanfang? Enthält er in entsprechender Weise häufig eine einleitende Bewertung?

    In unserem Beitrag werden wir den Anfang und das Ende von Buchbespre­chungen auf vorkommende Bewertungen hin analysieren. Es wird der Frage nach­gegangen, ob in beiden Textteilen bewertende Elemente vorkommen, und wenn ja, welche sprachlichen Mittel zur Bewertung eingesetzt werden. Außerdem wird untersucht, was bewertet wird. Das besprochene Werk, der Autor oder andere Aspekte? Das Unter­suchungs­material der Studie bilden Rezensionen aus der Süddeutschen Zeitung und der Frankfurter Allgemeinen Zeitung.

    Collocations in Letters to the Editor of Die Zeit

    In the field of phraseology collocations have been less extensively researched than idioms. Because of their lower degree of idiomaticity collocations do not normally cause receptive problems in foreign language learning but need to be paid attention to when producing texts. We therefore argue that collocations are an important part of phraseology.

    The purpose of this paper is to investigate the syntactic structure, use and functions of collocations in 243 Letters to the Editor published in the German weekly newspaper Die Zeit. After consulting two dictionaries of collocations and some more universal sources a total of 278 collocations were identified and their respective bases and collocates were determined. The results show that nouns make up the majority of the bases (97%), while adjectives and verbs prevail among the collocates (96%). This is contradictory to the distribution of parts of speech in one of the two most comprehensive German dictionaries of collocations. A closer analysis of the empirical material reveals that the bases seem to reflect the subjects discussed in the letters, whereas the collocates provide the means for expressing the authors’ attitudes and values.

    This paper analyses the structure and vocabulary of 120 electronically published daily horoscopes. Each text is initiated by statements describing the current situation and concluded by suggestions of measures to be taken in order for the readers to accomplish their goals. Characteristic of the lexis is the frequent use of mainly verbal phrasemes, which contribute to the compact format of the texts.

    Der Bereich Phraseologie ist in der schwedischen wissenschaftlichen Literatur spärlich vertreten. Es fehlt nicht nur an einer einheitlichen Terminologie, sondern auch an empirischen Studien zu Gebrauch und Funktion von Phraseologismen. Um diese Forschungslücke zu schließen und um zur weiteren Beschäftigung mit dem Forschungsfeld anzuregen, arbeiten wir seit einiger Zeit an einer schwedischsprachigen Einführung für den universitären Bereich. Da die Darstellung darauf abzielt, Gebrauch und Funktion phraseologischer Einheiten im heutigen Schwedisch zu erfassen, werden authentische Belege gesammelt und analysiert. Kriterien für die Auswahl von zu untersuchenden Textsorten waren dabei, dass sie die Standardsprache vertreten und sich an ein breiteres Publikum wenden. Buchbesprechungen in Tageszeitungen erfüllen beide Kriterien und erschienen uns auch deshalb geeignet, weil eine Rezension sowohl informierende als auch wertende Elemente aufweist, Letzteres laut einschlägiger Literatur eine zentrale Funktion phraseologischer Einheiten. Dies lässt sich durch die vorliegende Teiluntersuchung vorsichtig bestätigen, da die Mehrzahl der gesammelten Belege eine wertende Funktion hat. In Abschnitten, die ein Gesamturteil über das rezensierte Werk abgeben, machen sie sogar vier Fünftel aus.

    Abstract [en]

    “The Wanderings of Oisin” was published in 1889 and is one of W.B Yeats’ earliest poems and is the main focus for this essay. The poem depicts the duality of Irish identity and the transition from one system of belief to another. This essay will demonstrate that W.B Yeats uses Celtic and Catholic mythology in “The Wanderings of Oisin” in order to reflect his contemporary Ireland. The essay begins with a deifintion and a discussion about the words 'myth' and 'mythical method'. The second part of the essay describes the depiction of Celtic and Catholic mythology in “The Wanderings of Oisin” and the connection to late nineteenth century Ireland. The first section presents information on Irish nineteenth-century history and the second section focuses on five parallels to Yeats' contemporary society: The vitality of Celtic mythological beings, the depiction of Oisin as mediator, the sense of loss regarding Irish culture, the juxtaposition of Celtic and Catholic and the ambivalence that follows in a society where two conflicting mythologies coexist and compete. The main body of arguments discusses these parallels between Yeats’ portrayal of Celtic mythology and nineteenth century Ireland and shows that "The Wanderings of Oisin" reflects Yeats' contemporary Irish society.

    In their classic study of Basic Colour Terms (BCTs), Berlin and Kay (1969:6) identified four basic criteria of a BCT: i) it is monomorphemic, ii) its signification is not included in that of any other colour term, iii) its application must not be restricted to a narrow class of objects, iv) it must be psychologically salient to informants. Four subsidiary criteria were also suggested in those cases where the first four produced non-conclusive results. Although frequently debated at first, and slightly modified by Crawford (1982), it seems that the basic criteria have stood the test of time and are still considered helpful in the identification of BCTs.          

    The purpose of this paper is to describe a possible connection between basicness and the function of a colour term modifying a noun. Following Warren (1984) and several others, three functions of adjectives in attributive position in English can be distinguished: characterising, identifying and classifying. Identification and characterisation involve modification of an instance of a noun, thus indicating the colour of the object in the case of colour terms. In contrast to the other two, classification is more abstract as it involves modification of type, rather than instance. Its abstract quality allows colour terms to be used in extended senses (i.e. outside their normal area of designation). Examples of classifying use are phrases such as red onion and blue oak, where the colour terms do not refer to the colour of an individual onion or oak, but modify onion and oak as types, creating subtypes accordingly. Significantly, the colour of the leaves of a blue oak would not be called blue when judged in a colour array – i.e. out of context.

    This type of extension can be accounted for if type modification is analysed as a kind of reference-point phenomenon (Langacker 1999), where it is the combined salience of the colour term and the colour category that is significant. In the process of extension, a salient reference point is used to access another less salient entity. Since the purpose of classifying use is to create a subtype, the emphasis is on distinction and contrast to the most common instances of the general type (in our examples onion and oak). In the case of blue oak, the weak bluish tinge of the leaves marks the distinction and motivates the name despite the green element being stronger. Thus, in naming the subtypes a salient colour term (= Basic Colour Term) is preferred even if the nuance could be considered a very poor example of the colour term.

    This paper presents details of a study of English colour terms (Steinvall 2002), based on the Bank of English text corpus and the Oxford English Dictionary. Examples and figures are used to substantiate the theoretical models. The results show a correlation between the frequency of classifying use and the Berlin and Kay hierarchy, and it is therefore suggested that classifying use may serve as a further criterion for basicness. 

                Finally, the wider implications of the findings are discussed, and the results from previous studies, such as Conklin’s (1964) observations of Hanunóo colour categories, and Forbes’ of the use of brun and marron in French, are reviewed and reanalysed from the  perspective of classifying use. In addition, a connection between classifying and figurative use is briefly explored.

    This paper presents a corpus study of collocational patterns of English colour and emotion words. A collection of 50 colour terms and 135 emotion terms served as the starting point for the search of patterns. The obtained patterns are described and analysed with regard to salience from two different points of view: For each emotion category we ask which colour categories are most salient, and for each colour category we ask which emotion categories are most salient. The analysis of the underlying motivation for salient colour-emotion collocations demonstrates that the commonest motivations are based in metaphorical models linked to the body. This indicates the importance of experiential and embodied models for creating associations involving colour terms.

    Abstract [en]

    This thesis examines usage of English colour terms in context, based on an extensive computerised text corpus, the Bank of English. It describes the ways in which English colour terms may be used to refer to nuances outside their normal area of designation and to attributes outside the colour domain. Usage patterns are analysed on three different levels: with regard to the overall frequency of occurrences, nominal domains and individual tokens, respectively.

    Cognitive linguistics supplies the theoretical framework employed in the analyses of the observed patterns. The study identifies three types of usage where colour terms refer to peripheral colour nuances or to concepts outside the colour domain: classifying, figurative and marked usage.

    When a colour term has a classifying function, it can be used outside the normal area of designation. This usage is analysed as a type of reference-point construction where a term referring to a salient point in the colour domain is used to subcategorise an entity whose actual colour may be only a peripheral member of the category named by the colour term. An analysis of the OED and the Bank of English shows that this type of usage is primarily restricted to a few of the most salient basic terms.

    This study points to the close affinities between classifying and figurative usage. Figurative expressions of colour terms frequently have a classifying function. I argue that figurative meanings are derived through two types of metonymy: +SALIENT ATTRIBUTE FOR OBJECT+ and +SALIENT CONCRETE ATTRIBUTE FOR SALIENT ABSTRACT ATTRIBUTE+.

    Marked usage arises when specific colour terms are used in nominal domains where the specificity is not expected. This phenomenon is consequently confined to non-basic colour terms.

    On the basis of the established patterns of usage and the frequency of occurrences, this thesis suggests that the colour category may be analysed as a radial category, with the basic colour terms forming the centre.

    In this paper I analyse and discuss the effects of the use of specific colour vocabulary employed by five English-speaking travelogue writers visiting Northern Scandinavia in the nineteenth century. The number of different colour terms (types) and their frequency of occurrence (tokens) as well as the objects they describe are presented and analysed. The results show that the objects described most often with specific colour vocabulary are natural objects in the landscape. I argue that this use of colour precision in the discourse can be viewed as reflecting two aspects: first, a desire to add attributes such as exoticness and exclusiveness to the narrative as they are readily available associations in many terms; second, the writers’ engagement and involvement in the landscape they travel through, as the use of specific terminology can be very clearly linked to the writers’ opinions about what is described.

    Pite River is a free-flowing water, from the Norwegian border to the Gulf of Bothnia. The River is about 400 km long with a water flow of 160 cubic metres per second. Known for the general public for its waterfalls, streams and good conditions for fishing. For the general public this area is empty, but it attracts a lot of tourists during the summer months, the tourists visits places like Storforsen and Trollforsens rapids. But for the indigenous peoples, the Sami, who have used the area since the dawn of time, the river is a friend that you need to take care of and always respect. Because the Pite River gives life, and it takes life. Every person who reaches the river banks has to be reminded of this.

    One way of remembering the rivers wilderness is to have stories and songs about it. We find several stories and songs to the river. Among yoikers like Jonas Eriksson Steggo, Jonas Edvard Steggo and Margareta Bengtsson, they sang stories on how to act when you use the natural resources of the river. Unfortunately you can’t find such skilled yoikers today in this area. I will guide you on a journey from the reindeer grazing areas in Norway, over the mountain Sulidälbma, follow the river down to the gulf. The yoiking and the stories from Arjeplog will be the pathfinders to find the soul of the river, the land and its people.

    When Linneaus in his youth made his first excursion 1732 to the north of Sweden, he wrote a diary later published as Iter Lapponicum. He travelled in the summer months and met a lot of the native people in the north, the Sami. Linneaus’ point of view is perceptible for the reader, however, what did the objects of his research think of him. I will discuss in this paper of possible reactions from the Sami people in their encounter with Linneaus. What can we learn from his journey, today? The Sami history lack a great deal of information and documentation from the 18th century and Linneaus’ work is still important to complete that part of the history.

    Abstract [en]

    The focus of the dissertation is on the performance of the yoiks, what the yoikers tell the audience and what the yoikers mean with their narratives. The results demonstrate that the verbal art of yoik includes both song and spoken messages. The analysis of the yoik tradition is couched within performance theory. The discussions of the performance give keys to understanding storytelling, oral history, verbal art and a means to recognize when a yoiksong, vuolle, begins or when it stops and why the performer yoiks its vuolle the way he or she does. I argue that an inside perspective in conjunction with performance theory, provides a highly fruitful method to research in yoik tradition. In order to understand the tacit knowledge in the performance, it has been highly relevant to discuss the seminal work by the Sami author Johan Turi and to compare his theories with Sami scholars like Israel Ruong, Nils Jernsletten and Harald Gaski.

    In the 1900s there were three broader documentation projects of yoik tradition in Sweden. The first one was conducted in the 1910s by Karl Tirén, who used the phonograph and wax cylinders. In the 1940s the Institute of Language and Folklore (ULMA/SOFI) undertook a documentation project and in the 1950s the Swedish Radio did so too. Now, it was now possible, with the modern technology, to analyse the yoik tradition in new ways. It enables re-listening to the stories that was told and to see them in a context where the performers’ artistic skill, together with their social background and their relation to their audience is made visible.

    It has been discussed if there was an epic yoik tradition in South Sami areas. One hypothesis says that epic yoik was found only in northern areas in close connection to Finnish culture. However, this study shows that there was an epic yoik tradition in southern Lapland and probably the last of these epic singers passed away in the 1960s. The yoikers presented here are all good representatives of an epic yoik tradition. Sara Maria Norsa, Nils Petter Svensson, Jonas Eriksson Steggo and Knut Sjaunja are my main informants in the archive material, where their performances are described with accuracy. This makes it possible to analyse the events they are participating in. They are all in fact telling their lives’ stories by describing reindeer herding.

    This dissertation demonstrates the yoik tradition in its context, and I show that the vuolle has a structure where one can recognize when it begins and when it ends. The yoik tradition is not only music or song, the story that is told is equally important. The way of presenting a vuolle is also a part of the yoik tradition and one has to consider both the spoken and the sung messages in order to understand what the performer means. In short, yoik must be recognized as verbal art or storytelling.

    High-quality Sami literature includes works published in any of the Sami languages. The Sami publishing houses cannot publish books without special grants or political support. Norway is most generous to provide cultural sponsorship. Sadly, Sweden is at the bottom of this list. However, one of the most interesting book in 2007 was published in Sweden by Ann-Helén Læstadius SMS från Soppero, which describes the second generation of children to the "escaped parents" who tried to hide their own ethnicity by moving south, leaving the Sami area.

    Den moderna samiska musiken fick sitt genombrott under 1900-talet med Lapp-Lisa och Jokkmokks-Jokke, men den första same som slog igenom var Sven-Gösta Jonsson från Ammarnäs i Västerbottens län. Jonsson är den mest framgångsrike samiske artisten i Sverige och han har fått efterföljare. Det är dock stora skillnader hur man uttrycker sina hemlandstoner, om man jämför Jonsson med Lars-Jonas Johansson i Tärnaby. Jonsson bröt mycket ny väg för samiska artister utan att själv ha den målsättningen.

    Abstract [en]

    The study aims to describe and to explain some temporal aspects of the rhythmic structure of Swedish, and to compare Swedish, Spanish, and Finnish, characterized as rhythmically different languages.

    The temporal effects of some manipulations believed to have consequences for rhythm were studied in a series of experiments based on sets of Swedish sentences. These manipulations included the length of stress groups - the number of unstressed syllables between stressed ones - and their structural properties. Also the length of the surrounding stress group was varied, as well as speech rate.

    The results indicated the presence of several interacting factors. First, there was an inverse relation between the length of the phrase and the duration of the stress group: phrase-lenqth adjustments. Ihe

    effects were similar to those obtained when speech rate was independently varied. Secondly, adjacent stress groups were adjusted so that differences of duration were counteracted: stress-qroup adjustments.

    In addition, in longer stress groups rhythmic alternation between unstressed syllables occurred. Finally, there was an interplay between rhythm and language structure. This was evident from the stability of the temporal manifestations of the quantity distinction and the distinction between stressed and unstressed syllables irrespective of the experimental manipulations.

    The results were interpreted in terms of a process model of speech rhythm, the generality of which was considered in the cross-language comparisons. The presence of similar temporal effects in all three languages was taken to support assumptions of language-independent processing constraints. Deviations from the general pattern were explainable in terms of differences of language structure and adjustments to preserve important structural properties, especially quantity relations.

    Detta examensarbete jämför engelsk pluralform i ryskan och svenskan. Primärt undersöks och jämförs ett antal utvalda ryska och svenska ord (i svenska språket även kallade kepsbildningar), där den engelska pluralformen kommit att användas som singularform i ryskan och svenskan. Sekundärt görs liknande redogörelser och jämförelser av utvalda ryska och svenska ord utan singularformer, men med engelska pluralformer. Resultatet av analyserna mellan de båda språken påvisar flera likheter. Både ryskan och svenskan har i många fall lånat in samma ord från engelskan. Gemensamt för både ryskan och svenskan är att man felaktigt uppfattat engelska pluralformer som singulara. Dessutom finns det i båda språken en grupp engelska lånord som saknar singularformer men som bevarat sina engelska pluraländelser i pluralis. Tidsmässigt har inlåningen av de gemensamma engelska lånorden oftast skett senare för ryskans del. Vidare konstateras att ungdomsslangen både i ryskan och svenskan haft en avgörande betydelse för att nya lånord blivit populära.

    Abstract [en]

    Swedish learners of French often experience large difficulties in understanding spoken French. Words that the learners know very well when written or when pronounced separately are often hard to recognize in the speech flow. The aim of this study is to examine Swedish learners’ perception of French speech in order to identify the problems.

    The thesis consists of two parts. The first part provides an introduction to the perception of a second language. It also describes the phonological structures of Swedish and French and gives an overview of studies of the perception of spoken French.

    The second part of the thesis contains a presentation and an analysis of four perception experiments conducted with Swedish learners of French. The results show that the learners often confuse phonological contrasts that do not exist in Swedish. It is furthermore found that the phonological processes of schwa deletion, liaison, enchaînement and voicing assimilation contribute to the perception problems. However, although liaison may complicate word recognition the results indicate that the so-called potential liaison does so to an even greater extent. In a listening test using nonsense words, the learners seem actually to expect liaison when perceiving a word that can be linked to a following nonsense word. In fact, sequences like un navas and un avas are both perceived as un avas. Paradoxically, liaison thus seems to be most problematic when it does not occur.

    As to schwa deletion, the results show that word recognition is delayed when the schwa in the first syllable is deleted, as in la s’maine. In addition, the learners make a large number of errors due to schwa deletion. This phonological process sometimes completely prevents word recognition, especially when combined with a voicing assimilation. Schwa deletion thus seems to strongly complicate Swedish learners’ word recognition in spoken French.

    Abstract [en]

    The aim of this thesis is to acquire a deeper knowledge of Swedish social services’ written child welfare investigations. These investigations are conducted and documented by social workers at social welfare offices, and the investigations sometimes have a major impact on the lives of individuals. The research material consists of 50 written child welfare investigations, social workers’ answers to interviews and questionnaires and also steering documents regulating the child welfare practice of the social services, but the study focuses on the written investigations.

    Drawing on genre analysis theory and critical discourse analysis, patterns of linguistic features in the investigations are highlighted and considered as genre-specific features. Overall the investigations as written documents are considered both as discursive tools in a professional setting and as social authorities’ texts with great power in an asymmetrical power relation between authorities and individuals. This inherent duality implies different communicative purposes which are difficult to merge in the same document. The study includes a variety of empirical data and analytical tools deriving from genre analysis, critical discourse analysis, corpus linguistics and linguistic stylistics. In the study both quantitative and qualitative approaches are combined, creating methodological triangulation.

    The results show that all the investigations are alike in terms of communicative purposes, indicating that the concept of genre is rigid concerning the text sample. In other respects all the investigations are characterized by variation, in both linguistic and more content-oriented aspects. In some sections of the texts the language is formal and in others it is casual. This can be understood as a consequence of different purposes coexisting in the same text. The results also show that different text participants are constructed differently concerning responsibility for affecting other participants. The authorities’ impact through processes is often hidden in passive clauses. Another result indicates that pseudo-nominalization is a functional linguistic tool in the discourse, which might be a reason to reevaluate plain language recommendations regarding this grammatical construct.

    Abstract [en]

    This study engages with the discursive construction of knowledge in school documents concerning pupils in need of special pedagogical support. In these texts, information from various voices is represented and recontextualized, meaning that images of pupils are negotiated and outlined, and ultimately knowledge about pupils and their learning is constructed discursively. The aim of the study is to investigate practices of knowledge construction in these texts. The data consist of 27 documents written by teachers who teach in lower secondary school (7th–9th grades). Drawing on linguistic discourse analysis, lexico-grammatical features are analyzed from both a qualitative and a quantitative perspective. The study shows how information originating from various voices is managed and framed by linguistic means in qualitatively different ways, and how the framing of information contributes to construction of several kinds of knowledge. In the analysis, five forms of framing are identified, along with six different types of voices. By quantifying the forms of framing as related to various voices, the study maps out the legitimization and delegitimization of various voices via the construction of different kinds of knowledge. Even though information from several voices is represented in the texts, it is primarily information from either the writer him/herself or written sources, such as previous documentation about pupils, that is legitimized by the writer.

    This study investigates what discourses dominate teachers’ beliefs about writing education and how these discourses are negotiated among teachers in social media. The empirical material is based on a stratified random sample of interactions, so-called threads, between teachers in three large open Facebook groups for teachers of Swedish (2,500–10,000 members). Taking Ivanič’s 7 discourses of writing and learning to write as a framework, the study analyses discourses about writing visible in the interactions as well as blogs linked to, and school books and apps recommended. The two last steps are data-driven, emanating from previous steps. The result shows that 40% of the interactions concern writing. These interactions are dominated by a skills discourse. Further, a genre discourse challenges a former prominent discourse, the process discourse. Also, discourses in a social context are rare. The results indicate a narrow view of writing education in policy and practice, which, due to Ivanič (2004), can be interpreted as a consequence of a wider societal context where the educational system is questioned and explicit standards for writing are foregrounded. What conditions that would facilitate a wider range of discourses of writing in a school under pressure merits further investigations.

    Abstract [sv]

    Denna studie undersöker interkulturalitet, det vill säga mötet mellan människor med olika etnicitet eller kulturella bakgrunder. Syftet med undersökningen är att undersöka lärarnas uppfattningar och åsikter om interkulturalitet och dess pedagogiska konsekvenser i skolan där lärarnas förhållningssätt till interkulturalitet i undervisningen undersöks samt åsikter kring det praktiska förhållningssättet och vad de anser om interkulturalitet i ett skolsammanhang. Metoden för denna undersökning är kvalitativt inriktad och för datainsamlingen har jag använt mig av intervjuer. Resultatet visar att lärarna anser det vara positivt med interkulturalitet inom ett skolsammanhang även om det förekom oklarheter kring vad det var. Dock finns det även brister i det interkulturella förhållningssättet då lärarna påpekar att kollegorna inte förhåller sig till interkulturalitet i undervisningen. Lärarna säger sig försöka framhäva och se såväl egenskaper som undervisningsmöjligheter för att befrämja ett interkulturellt förhållningssätt i undervisningen. Vad gäller åsikterna lärarna har om ett interkulturellt förhållningssätt i undervisningen är de väldigt positiva även om det finns både svårigheter och nackdelar, som till exempel svag orientering inom ämnesområdet, att överkomma. Slutsatsen är att låta begreppet interkulturalitet ta plats i läroplanerna och utbilda alla lärare och skolledare för att kunna uppnå en skolvärld där alla verksamma inom skolan förhåller sig till interkulturalitet.

    Abstract [en]

    The aim of this study is to examine how beliefs about writing are expressed in Swedish teachers’ feedback on student writing. Drawing upon Roz Ivanič’s framework of discourses of writing and learning to write, this study highlights discourses of writing appearing in Swedish teachers’ written feedback on student texts in upper secondary school. Furthermore, the study aims to examine to what extent the different discourses appear. Written feedback provided by two Swedish teachers was analyzed and categorized using Ivanič’ framework. The results show that a skills- creativity- process- genre- and social practices discourse could all be identified in the feedback, with the skills- process- and genre discourse appearing most prominently. A discourse for thinking and learning as well as a socio-political discourse were both absent in the analyzed material. The conclusions drawn point to the importance of teachers’ awareness of how their practices can affect their ability to provide a comprehensive teaching of writing.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this study was to examine the perspectives of Swedish students in upper secondary school regarding their abilities to attend higher education in Finland. The focus was partly on identifying factors which contribute to positive and negative attitudes on studying in Finland and partly on achieving a better understanding of how the students choose a higher education institution. The students in this examination are studying at an upper secondary school in the Torne Valley in Sweden. Information was gathered through questionnaires and interviews. The questionnaire consisted of 24 questions of which 22 were structured and standardized. The questions were divided into three blocks depending on their purpose in relation to the aim of the study. The results are presented in bar charts and in text. The results showed that the students have a positive attitude to living in a bilingual society. The majority of the students are of the opinion that the geographical proximity to Finland has affected their lives positively. Almost 45% of the respondents master Meänkieli or Finnish, which is seen as a benefit, especially on the labour market.There is to a large extent a lack of tradition, experience, role models and information from higher education institutions in Finland, possibly leading to the perception that Finland is not an option for higher education. In general, the students have an ignorance of their own competence and capability in relation to the Finnish education system. The study shows that educational guidance and information may have an influence on students’ choice of higher education institution and programme. The students make their own decisions based on individual choices and visions for the future. The most important factor in choosing a higher education institution is the existence of the intended programme of study.

    By collecting and analysing plant names linguistically, a knowledge of popular botany and its relationshipto scientific botany can be obtained.This study has two primary aims: to describe the popular botanical view of the part of thevegetal world represented by grasses and to illustrate the dialectal use of plant names.The material consists of dialectal names for grasses and has been taken chiefly from variousarchives. The area investigated is primarily Sweden, but other parts of Fenno-Scandinavia, chieflyNorway and parts of Finland where Swedish is spoken, have also been included. The plant namesanalysed are either equivalents or synonyms: they have the same meaning but different geographicalareas of distribution or the same meaning and the same geographical areas of distribution.Three popular "species", each of which represents three different correspondences betweenpopular and scientific botany are described."Grass with a panicle" illustrates underdifferentiation. A number of grasses are collectivelygiven the same name. The grasses are primarily characterised by their similarity in appearance,but they are also used in the same way, as fodder grasses. "Grass with a panicle" has five namesin Swedish dialects: ven, tåtel, bunk, jägarn and tannar."Vegetative tillers" exemplifies overdifferentiation. The tillers are only one part of the plant,which means that the popular classification is more differentiated than the scientific one. Thereare probably several reasons for this differentiation: The vegetative tillers are the first to appearin spring, before the culms with panicles. The tillers are grazed, not cut like the flowering stems.The names found in Swedish dialects are rysk, tov and sia."Mat-grass" represents one-to-one correspondence. The "species" is on the whole identicalwith the scientific species mat-grass. The reason for this identity is the characteristic appearanceof the plant and its hardness. It is difficult to cut. In Swedish dialects mat-grass has five nameswhich are widely spread: stagg, finnskägg, hära, sägg and fnugg. But it also has a great numberof names with a very limited distribution. Because of the special efforts required at harvesttime—mat-grass often bent to the scythe only to rise again soon afterwards—this grass could stirup emotions and hence it has been subject to affective word-formation.The material points to the conclusion that external characteristics of plants may be decisive fortheir classification in popular botany. It is important to note, however, that the use made of aplant is also important in the popular division of "species".

    A translation of worlds: Aspects of cultural translation and Australian migration literature2010Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)

    This study explores the exchange of cultural information that takes place in the meeting between immigrant and non-immigrant characters in a selection of Australian novels focusing on the theme of migration: Heartland (1989) by Angelika Fremd, A Change of Skies (1991) by Yasmine Gooneratne, Stella’s Place (1998) by Jim Sakkas, Hiam (1998) by Eva Sallis and Love and Vertigo (2000) by Hsu-Ming Teo. The concept cultural translation functions as a theoretical tool in the analyses. The translation model is particularly useful for this purpose since it parallels the migration process and emphasises the power relations involved in cultural encounters. Within the framework of the study, cultural translation is defined as making an unfamiliar cultural phenomenon familiar to someone. On the intratextual level of the text, the characters take on roles as translators and interpreters and make use of certain tools such as storytelling and food to effect translation. On the extratextual level, Fremd, Gooneratne, Sakkas, Sallis and Teo represent cultural translation in the four thematic areas the immigrant child, storytelling, food and life crisis.

    The first theme, the immigrant child, examined in chapter one, explores the effects of using the immigrant child as translator in communication situations between immigrants and representatives of Australian public institutions. In these situations, the child becomes the adult’s interpreter of the Australian target culture. The role as translator entails other roles such as a link to and a shield against the Australian society and, as a result, traditional power relations are reversed. Chapter two analyses how the second theme, storytelling, is presented as an instrument for cultural education and cultural translation in the texts. Storytelling functions to transfer power relations and resistance from one generation to the next. Through storytelling, the immigrant’s hybrid identity is maintained because the connection to the source culture is strengthened, both for the storyteller and the listener. The third theme, food as a symbol of cultural identity and as representation of the source and target cultures, is explored in chapter three. Source and target food cultures are polarised in the novels, and through an acceptance or a rejection of food from the source or target cultures, the characters symbolically accept or reject a belonging to that particular cultural environment. A fusion between the source and target food cultures emphasises the immigrant characters’ cultural hybridity and functions as a strategic marketing of culturally specific elements during which a specific source culture is translated to a target consumer. Finally, the fourth theme, life crisis, is analysed in chapter four where it is a necessary means through which the characters experience a second encounter with Australia and Australians. While their first encounter with Australia traps the characters in a liminal space/phase that is signified by cultural distancing, the second encounter offers a desire and ability for cultural translation, an acceptance of cultural hybridity and the possibility to become translated beings – a state where the characters are able to translate back and forth between the source and target cultures.
