    Abstract [en]

    To understand how different design solutions affect users, designers traditionally use different evaluation methods that mainly rely on conscious feedback from the users. However, the complexity of human behaviour, where a large part is unconscious, point to a need for an extended tool box addressing the part not accessible to human conscious knowledge. Here, we describe a design research lab where traditional methods are complemented with tools to measure physiological signals influenced by emotional and sympathetic responses. These tools include galvanic skin response (GSR), electrocardiograph (ECG), and electroencephalograph (EEG). Typical sessions with acquired data of conscious and unconscious user reactions are described. The large body of data collected, which also require non-design expertise for interpretation, suggest that a further development towards simplified output data of the unconscious reactions is needed to allow wider use within industrial design work.

    Abstract [en]

    The Umeå Pantry was a five-week long public art event held in Umeå, Sweden, aimed at making concerns about food production public and supporting local communities interested in food related practices.

    The event consisted of a series of performances where participant communities were invited to a dialogue on food concerns and practices in the region. The performances took the form of communal activities such as food harvesting, cooking, workshops, debates and demonstrations.

    The making of the art event highlights the practice of creating forms for engagement and participation of disparate communities around social issues.

    In the broader picture, this project contributes to the understanding of community participatory design and design for social innovation.

    Abstract [en]

    The case study presented here is an intensive nine day community participation project in a Swiss town, aimed at fostering community food production. The approach to participatory design presented here seeks to emphasize the in-situ improvisatory ‘doing' of collaborative activities. Using notions such as diffusing, reifying and catalyzing the study describes the iterative movement of the project that is bound up in material arrangements and social relations. Through a reflection in action approach, the author unpacks how the designer's agency is understood through social interactions and acts of summarizing, materialization and translation. The paper concludes by discussing power and agency, both as an outcome and central to the design process. This reflective exploration through the lens of agency seeks to encourage the reflexivity of designers in collaborative practice.

    Abstract [en]

    This paper is about the making of Umeå Pantry, a public participatory art festival performance on matters of concern regarding local food production. Participatory projects have been criticized for the way that researchers harness the creative outputs of collaborative work while safeguarding the underlying power structures. In addressing such critique this project focused on design’s relational and socio-political form rather than the value-added object of design. We argue that a public orientation, as in the case of Umeå Pantry, involves a critical enquiry and reflexive approach, which goes beyond participatory design within institutional boundaries and that there is a need for informal tactics to navigate this open public space. Thus, the paper argues that public participatory design needs to rethink its sensibilities and aim for a greater emphasis on the relational and socio-political underpinnings of a project. Articulating notions such as an open program, movement, relational exchanges and infrastructure, we are trying to find out more about what it takes to prototype new participatory design practices engaging with public matters of concern.

    In this workshop, we propose that design research needs to actively think about designing research tools and procedures as part of the research process. Following from this a number of questions arise: How can we get a critical understanding of how research tools shape our research practices? How can we practice collaborative sharing, critiquing and making of tools? For example, in a setup using materials and manual making at the PhD by Design session. When engaging in experimental practice-based research, what capabilities do design researchers need to prototype and articulate their tool-making practices?

    Abstract [en]

    Industrial design has had a certain character because it was called into being in order to serve new forms of production and consumption. Now, design (research) is being called on to “frame and address the societal problems that face us” and “shape our lives in more responsible, meaningful, and open ways”. This means addressing complex, large-scale, non-local (but locally manifested) challenges. But design—particularly when it has aspirations of being democratic and participatory is typically highly local and situated.

    The aim of this conversation is to speculate about future articulations, practices, and contexts of postindustrial design (research), and in the process to prototype the inclusive, rich, realistic yet hopeful discourse among passionate partial perspectives that is necessary to support it. This is a process of developing our ‘response-abilities’—our ‘collective capacity to respond’ as we face what challenges and calls on us to act.

    With developing technologies and growing infrastructures, connected experiences are expanding their realms towards various devices and scenarios in our lives. One of the areas, which is going under a big change due to this connectivity is the car related experiences. As connectivity is intrinsically enabler of different experiences and services, it is foreseen that it will bring a different dimension to car and driving related experiences as well.By investigating the future trends and possibilities that connectivity can provide to car and driving related experiences, this thesis aims for imagining the near future scenarios with an explorative approach, focusing on one and addressing to the rising issues with a design proposal that is meaningful to both users and the industry.The result, Tripcloud, contributes to the future scenario of having a road trip with the car, with a new digital platform that aims for supporting the users throughout the planning and bringing the plans into the car experience seamlessly and safely. It aims for reducing today’s existing complexity in terms of interaction and cognition to provide a better experience and avoid driver distraction. With providing organised information pieces, information exchange between people and automated links with mobile devices and car, Tripcloud offers easier an more convenient alternative for road trip planing and bringing the plans into car experiences for the near future.

    Babies born prematurely are deprived of normal sensorimotor stimulation when placed in an artificial environment, the incubator. The aim of this project was to design a series of products that could promote the baby’s emotional and neurological development, and to facilitate parental bonding. 

    The products designed in this project has a theoretical basis on the research available today on cognitive and emotional development in children born prematurely. They were developed in close cooperation with a group of parents and nurses in a neonatal intensive care unit.

    Presence is a product collection for developmental care, consisting of a mattress, a figure and a necklace. The mattress has vibration sensors that transfer the mother’s heart beat and speakers with recorded heartbeat and her voice. The figure in silicone is designed for sensorimotor stimulation and can be together with the child in the incubator. The figure wears a cloth with mother’s scent. The cloth can be worn by parent in a necklace made of silicone.

    Abstract [en]

    Humans were made to move. Many hours in front of a screen leads to stiff bodies and a diminished bodily awareness. The aim of this project was to explore how technology can serve to increase our body awareness and adapt to our physical conditions in everyday life with focus on office spaces.

    The study is explorative with a user-centered approach and a focus on embodied prototyping, where the user is a subject of design. Data was collected with recordings, interviews, and workshops. Reflexion-on-action, prototyping and iterations lead to the final outcome.

    The final concept is a wearable that encourage people to move and stretch out more often and spontaneously throughout the day. It does so by vibration patterns along your spine and shoulders.

    The idea of this concepts is to make people move often and regularly during the day; to react spontaneously to a reminder from the body, mediated by the vibrations. The system is thought to be self-awarding; if it feels good to stretch out, to extend the arms, to move – then you will want to do it again.

    Abstract [en]

    My result address the problem that getting back up in the boat after one have fallen in can be very difficult. My research led me to focus on the very smallest boats, rowing boats and open motorboats under 6 meters in length.

    My solution to the problem is to provide an easily attached footstep that can be reached and pulled down from water level. The product can be adapted to different boats. For the smallest boats, manually activated flotation units can be integrated to prevent the boat from tipping.

    The Baltic Sea is one of the world’s most polluted seas. Increased discharge of nutrients due to greater populations of people, together with a slow water exchange, creates great stress on the sea. Too much nutrients leads to increased growth of algae and causes problem in the ecosystem. Even if we reduce nutrient discharge the problem still exist in the ocean. When algae dies and sinks, more nutritional substances is produced called "internal eutrophication". This phenomenon will grow in the future due to a warmer climate and the problem is spreading towards the coastal zone, which is an important site for fish recreation. By removing the abundance of algae, the nutritional and toxic substances are reduced and the algae biomass can be a future resource for biofuel production.

    Design research has considered the power of collaboration in terms of the politics of artefacts, services and practices to build or to support publics. Working within a framework of “commons” as continuing processes of negotiation in collaboration, this study asks: How can design skills and agency build up collaborative capacities in urban communities for sustained processes of social innovation? This qualitative research explores two case studies in Brazil, where design agency is identified in social practices carried out by both designers and non-designers. Three key processes involved in designing collaboration were identified: experimenting, disrupting and sustaining. This work concluded that design skills facilitate the distribution of power to build collaboration through co-production of common spaces. This investigation contributes to the ongoing discussion of design and “infrastructuring,” identifying the power of design agency in building and sustaining collaboration in a complex social landscape of an emerging city.

    Three global trends are about to greatly influence the world we live in; collaborate consumption, a strong environmental awareness and a third industrial revolution that includes 3D printing, advanced robotics and open source software. This project is addressing these changes in order to evoke new enthusiasm for cars among the general public and again be a creative and positive driving force in our modern society.

    The proposal is illustrated through a halo car for a local car sharing fleet targeted at the Norwegian market. The car seeks to create immediate attention through dynamic design elements as well as long lasting enthusiasm through non-compromised usability.

    70% of the fresh water and 40% of the earth surface is used for agriculture purposes. Today we throw away nearly every 3rd grocery bag we buy. By doing this we waste a lot of the worlds resources. Only in Sweden we spoil 1.2 billion tons of food every year.

    700 000 tons of this is from the households. The biggest source to the waste is single households and families with children, this became the target group for this project. We have to change our behavior to preserve the earth’s resources. The research showed that the biggest reasons that we throw so much food is that we first of all buy too much food. We don’t have time to eat all the food we buy and it get therefore spoiled. This is a consequence from that we don’t see it as a problem. There is a lack of knowledge in how much we throw away and how to store food correctly. We are bad at planning our meals and grocery shopping and we end up with too much food because of this.

    This project investigates how we can reduce the food waste. The analyzed problem areas was used as a starting point in the ideation. The project focus is during the storing of the food in the households and how to keep track on the food we have. The storing of the food can be divided in three parts, make food last longer, plan the meals and shopping and keep track on the food we have. The final result is the smart food storage. It is a concept that helps the user to get a good overview of the food and to store it in the optimized way. It enables for planning of grocery shopping and helps you keep track on the food you have.

    Today China faces the issue of overcrowded urban spaces. Booming automobile ownership is causing massive traffic congestion. Even though public transportation has been promoted and regarded as mainstream within the society, I believe that private vehicles do not necessarily need to be a controversial option in the future.

    The design process included background research, user definition, packaging studies, ideation, digital form development and context visualization. All these were carefully executed to ensure a sensible and creative result.

    The proposed concept vehicle envisions greater technical efficiency combined with environmental responsibility. A sports car that is the ultimate carpooling solution during weekdays and a fun getaway drive for the weekends.

    During the last decade, social media has had a great impact on the way we communicate. It has also expanded our awareness of the world.!

    However it has become harder for the lay person to find news, because of too many conflicting interests in the mass media industry on one hand, and simply too much free information available on the other!

    This report documents my study of how social media has affected the way we collect, consume and share news. I describe how democratization of information has made some things easy, but some other things hard - filtering data to find meaningful content has become harder!

    My studies were targeted mainly at people younger than 30, and mainly in India, and much of its design is informed by problems characteristic to the Indian context. So while I do not explicitly target my end result at the Indian market, a news network by its very nature needs to be global, and this process reflects that.!

    I go on to use Design Methods including Brainstorming, Participatory Workshops and Service Design theory to arrive at a product that aims to provide people a way to stay up to date with meaningful and relevant news. ! I propose a social network for individuals to exchange news with each other. I try to understand what makes some pieces of information more important than others, and how a network can self filter information so that participants can get high quality content.!

    In the final result, I describe the framework of this network and how people would contribute to it and consume from it.

    Abstract [en]

    This dissertation is about 'transtructures', a term coined to describe new kinds of infrastructures that are more attentive and responsive to the needs of contemporary society, its emerging economies and technological capabilities. The purpose of this inquiry is to begin to explore the character and possibilities of a design practice that could guide responsibly and ethically the transition of existing industrial infrastructures towards these new configurations: what processes it could follow, and what materials it could include. Through a series of design experiments in the areas of logistics and telecommunications, I started to prototype and develop a programmatic framework for a 'redirective' design practice, which is aimed at engaging publics with infrastructural issues. Design probes and speculative mockups have been employed to express and materialize present and future infrastructural configurations, opening them up to public scrutiny and participation. The premise of this work is fairly simple: if we want to provide more citizen-centered solutions to emerging social demands, we need to explore what changes are possible, and even required, within the industrial systems that currently frame our possibilities for implementing such innovations. Thus, certain design interventions will be necessary to allow people outside these systems to understand and relate to these networks and to identify possibilities for their transformation. The result of this inquiry is the early 'prototype' of what a practice for redirecting and transitioning towards the design of such postindustrial infrastructures could be like. In particular, it exemplifies how design may inquire into the artificial space of industrial infrastructures and explore opportunities for their reconfiguration toward more contextually adaptive forms and functions.

    This paper presents a design exploration of opportunities for opening up industrial infrastructures in order to make them supportive of more sustainable and locally adaptive configurations. Taking logistic services in a rural area as a case study, we describe a set of interventions in tracing and expressing their underlying functionalities to make them available as design material. The insights gained inspired the speculative design of a concept for a distributed and community-owned delivery network performed by drones. The case illustrates the potential that can be made available when opening up infrastructures for participative design interventions.

    There is an emerging set of needs in our post-industrial society that require a contextualsensitivity and local flexibility that traditional industrial infrastructures seem to lack. As a response, distributed small-scale forms of production and collaborative services are being developed, providing the foundations for more resilient and responsive infrastructures.Using urban freight delivery services as a case, this paper presents a possible approachto accessing and expressing the back end functioning of a large formal industrial urbaninfrastructure in order to make it accessible to bottom-up innovation. The postal servicehas been used as a test bed for two small hacking experiments using consumer and do-ityourself (DIY) electronics: a GPS and micro cameras. Data visualization and videos have been produced in order to materialize and share knowledge about the infrastructure and its qualities. By tracing its underlying functionalities, we aim to reveal otherwise hidden opportunities for design intervention that could become the starting point for participatory design processes aimed at bottom-up innovation in the context of industrial infrastructures.As such, this project aims at adding to the tools and materials available for such designpractices.

    Emerging post-industrial societal needs require the evolution of existing networks of industrial infrastructures toward more distributed and citizen-centered configurations. This opens up new questions regarding what design processes and practices are necessary to effect change within these systems that are often deliberately not accessible and open for design interventions. We here present a set of design explorations in tracing and materializing infrastructures in order to make them available for design and participation, taking logistic services in a remote rural

    area of northern Sweden as a case study and field site. A design concept consisting of a drone and drone postbox were used to speculate about the possibility of a community-owned delivery network operated by drones

    in synergy with existing infrastructures. We used these artifacts in staging participatory processes of imagination and experimentation in order to explore possible future configurations. The project provides an example of a possible framework for initiating and curating the transformation

    of industrial systems towards more open and locally adaptive forms and functions.

    In particular, it illustrates the rich potential and opportunities for design when it comes to ways of knowing and designing with the infra- structural—that which is usually hidden beneath the surface.

    Every year, approximately 100 people die in fire related incidents in Sweden.

    ”Seek” is designed to assist fire fighters to locate people faster in smoke diving procedures.

    ”Seek” identifies people and possible dangers within the building before the smoke diving procedure begins. This allows the operation to be streamlined and planned, as well as avoiding risks which fire fighters are exposed to today.

    The early overview created by the ”Seek” smoke detector not only saves time in planning but reduces the time from accident until the people in the burning building can receive skilled care, increasing their chance of survival.

    Abstract [en]

    Vocation-focused design education should ideally aim at foreseeing the challenges and opportunities society and industry face, and act accordingly to these needs. Some of the obvious questions are: what should the next generation of designers be able to do, and how should they do it? Or to phrase it from an academic point of view what should they learn, and how should we teach it? In order to answer these questions, we first need to fully understand what makes present education and teaching successful and how it is structured and pedagogically organised, before a next step can be taken. This paper will show case studies from a small international masters education in industrial design that only enrol approximately 20 students annually. Despite its small size, it has ensured that the design institute it belongs to is presently positioned in the top of the ranking lists for the most awarded design schools in the world, from three different design competitions representing Europe, Asia, and North America.

    Interaction design research acknowledges that two distinct design approaches, namely, the engineering design approach and the creative design approach can be applied to carry out the activity of interaction design. The interaction designer therefore appears to have a choice when it comes to the selection of a design approach when confronted with a design situation. But what should be the basis of this choice? In this paper, considering design as a problem solving process, I compare the structure of the design processes informed by the engineering design approach and the creative design approach. I identify some differences between the design process informed by the engineering design and the creative design approach and note that the awareness of such differences could form the basis for interaction designers to opt for one design approach over the other.

    Abstract [en]

    The activity of interaction design when applied in the ubicomp context faces a number of novel design challenges and requires interaction designers to bring in their creative abilities when bringing an interactive artefact into being. In this paper, I examine if the structure of the prevalent process of interaction design is effective enough in supporting designer’s creative inputs during the process of interaction design within the ubicomp context. To do so, I examine the key activities of design and point out that the problem driven structure of the prevalent process of interaction design is somewhat ineffective in supporting designer’s creative abilities. I then point to another approach to design, namely, the solution driven approach and examine its effectiveness to support designer’s creative inputs. I conclude the paper by providing a brief reflection of a design case where the solution focused approach was applied to being an interactive artefact into being and point to the advantages it appears to offer to support designer’s creative inputs.

    In recent years, the concept of design thinking has received significant attention within the research literature originating from several design as well as management fields [1, 5]. However, there does not seem to be any agreement on what exactly design thinking is, nor on how it guides the activity of design. In this paper, we introduce one recently articulated view of design thinking originating from the field of architectural design [4]. We briefly discuss some characteristics of this view of design thinking and how it guides the activity of design and then apply the process of design guided by this view of design thinking to address the design brief provided by DTRS9. We conclude by pointing out that unlike the descriptions of the activity of design provided by design paradigms, the design process informed by architectural view of design thinking consists of both the process of problem decomposition and the process of solution focused process of the solution focused problem formulation which provides a means for designers to get to grips in a more practical way with real design issues.

    Abstract [en]

    Within ubicomp research literature a novel type of prototype, referred as Design Fiction prototype, has received some attention in recent years. While such prototypes appear to have significant potential to inform ubicomp design how to integrate them into the ubicomp design process is a question that has not recieved adequate attention thus far.

     

    In an attempt to answer the above question a design experiment was carried out at the Umeå Institute of Design where the integration of design fiction prototype into the ubicomp design process was examined in two different ways: one, after establishment of requirements and development of design concepts, following the prevalent ubicomp design process and two, at the very beginning of the design process following the design process prevalent in traditional design disciplines.

     

    In this paper, I briefly discuss the deign experiment carried out and reflect on results. I conclude the paper by pointing out that the problem focused nature of the prevalent ubicomp design process is not conducive to leverage the advantages offered by such prototypes whereas the solution focused design process prevalent within the traditional design disciplines appears to offer better opportunities.

    Abstract [en]

    The prevalent design methods and tools being used in Service Design appear to have been informed by the prevalent design traditions within the technology design fields (e.g. HCI and User Experience Design). Such design traditions put users at the centre of the activity of design and aim to cater to their needs, aspirations and desires. But should the user in service design be conceived in the same manner as it has been conceived in technology design fields?

    To investigate this question, in this paper, first, I discuss why the notion of user is important for the activity of design. I then discuss how the notion of user has informed the attributes of user artefact interaction within the technology design disciplines over the years. Following this I discuss some of the everyday services to identify attributes of user service interaction. By comparing the user service interaction attributes with the user artefact interaction attributes originating from technology design disciplines, I point out that user service interaction attributes are somewhat different than the user artefact interaction attributes within technology design disciplines. I conclude the paper by arguing for the need of re- conceptualization of the user in service design to assist service designers to design innovative, efficient and effective services.

    300 million pictures are uploaded everyday on Facebook alone. We live in a society where photography, filming and self-documentation are a natural part of our lives. But how does it inflict on our experiences when we always are considering camera angles, filters and compositions? We might very well ruin the experiences we so badly want to save.

    Scuba diving is a special experience. We enter a world with another space of movement, surroundings and animal life. An experience that can only be experienced for a limited time. An adventure one want to remember, save and share. But what implications does it have on ones experience if one also have to focus on documenting it?

    JACQUES is a product that enables the diver´s to document their dive as a memory to re-experience later and share with others while still leaving them fully immersed in their diving experience. With relatively simple technology such as sonar and video object recognition Jacques can film the diver´s underwater adventure and adept to their behavior without the diver even noticing it. And by being focused on the actual dive one also becomes a better and safer diver.

    Approximately 300 children ages 0 to 18 are diagnosed with cancer in Sweden every year, and 80 to 90 of them undergo radiotherapy treatment. The aim was to describe children's experiences of preparing for and undergoing radiotherapy, and furthermore to describe children's suggestions for improvement. Thirteen children between the ages of 5 and 15 with various cancer diagnoses were interviewed. Data was analyzed using qualitative content analysis. The findings revealed five categories: positive and negative experiences with hospital stays and practical arrangements; age-appropriate information, communication, and guidance to various degrees; struggle with emotions; use of distraction and other suitable coping strategies; and children's suggestions for improvement during radiotherapy. An overarching theme emerged: "It is tough and tiring but it works". Some key areas were: explanatory visits, the need for information and communication, being afraid, discomfort and suffering, the need for media distraction, dealing with emotions, and the need for support. A systematic, family-centered preparation program could possible help families prepare and individualized distraction during radiotherapy could contribute to reducing distress. Further studies with interventions could clarify successful programs.

    The professional auto body painter works in an extreme environment, where the painter faces constant movement, ever-changing working situations and pressure to deliver a flawless paint job: the paint booth. The temperature in the paint booth is high, often around 30˚ Celsius. The floor is very hard, made of metal grid or concrete, and the painter usually has to move around a lot, at least 9 km per day. For this project I chose to focus on the painter’s work footwear as a major part of the personal protective equipment. My goal is to create a new standard in working shoes, specifically made for this environment and context. A comfortable shoe that could withstand heat, paint dust and wear. A shoe that is made for its users: the FRM AIRCON.

    The great advancements in technology are transforming cars into the next digital frontier, redefining people’s lifestyle around mobility. The thesis intended to push further on this trend, exploring new interaction paradigms and creating delightful experiences in future self-driving vehicles. With a cross-discipline scope, the formula is to blend digital information into physical form and material, blurring the boundary between the car’s interior and interface. As the conclusion, I learned that a constant harmony between virtual and physical world is the key for designers to create natural and intuitive experiences with technology.

    The final result is an autonomous interior concept with multi-sensory user experiences. The core interface, as the physical manifestation of the car’s artificial intelligence, interact with users emotionally, offering its amazing capability in assistance. The in-car environment is evolved with sensors and displays, providing intuitive access to dedicated functions and immersive content.

    Nuclear waste remains radioactive for thousands of years. Burying it underground in an enormous repository, called Onkalo, surrounded and secured by solid rock is the long-term solution Finnish authorities implement right now. Once the repository is filled up, it will be locked up forever and never opened again. At the same time three new nuclear power plants are built.

    Out of Sight, out of Mind?

    Ultimately, this raises questions: Can this be the solution for final disposal of nuclear waste? How do we understand a problem clearly exceeding our capabilities as human beings? How do we deal with the dilemmas of uncertainty, invisibility, time, demand, possible contamination, and our individual responsibility as human beings?

    Understanding Through Interaction

    I designed three everyday products, a lamp, a toy for children, and a pregnancy test, that afford a familiar everyday action on one hand, while exposing a dilemma related to Onkalo on the other. In doing so, the artifacts make those dilemma tangible and facilitate understanding and critical thinking. Sharing a personal experience, the users can engage in a personal discourse around nuclear waste actively, opposing the distant and highly politicalised discourse spread by the media.

    A fascination for electronics development platforms was the starting point for this project. Brought forward from open source initiatives, these exist of modular hardware toolkits and software. This modularity allows people to use them in different configurations to support a variety of contexts and purposes. In this way it enables them to bring just about any idea to life.

    There is an emerging trend on the web, where people modify or hack into products, trying to change or extends their products to fit their needs. As technology is becoming cheaper and embedded in everyday products, it allows products to become more flexible, and be more sensitive towards these trends.

    My project has been an investigation in developing a method for design, which promotes modular product systems, rather than closed, fixed products. Open-ended design is an approach which supports an exploration space for end-users. Focused on laymen users, allows them to investigate what functionality and behaviour is needed for their own interests and niche purposes. The open-ended design framework was used to design Myriad: a flexible, modular camera system to complement GoPro cameras. Myriad exists of a growing library of modules, sensors and a mobile app which combined create unique camera functionality and behaviours.

    The outcome is a celebration vehicle for the first century of the car company, and also for the tenth year anniversary of their autonomous technology.A car that captures Volvo values of Innovation, safety, family focused design, and Scandinavian emotion in an unusual package.

    Humans are not ready for what humanity has created

    By 2020, chronic diseases will account for almost three-quarters of all deaths worldwide. This is a result of malnutrition in today’s food environment.

    The food industry takes advantage of predisposed human preferences for sugar, salt, and fat. This creates the necessity for individual willpower and habit control and leads to decision fatigue of healthy food choices in our already busy lives. The critical issue is that we as humans are not biologically ready for what is offered to us today.

    Situated between nutrition science and human psychology, this project aims to critique the food industry and our interactions with food by reflecting on human weaknesses and habits. A combination of human centered design and critical design allows this project to address this issue through communicating the needs of what might have to happen if our behavior and environment do not change.

    This project is meant to create a critical reflection around our personal rela­tionship to our own body with the hopes that this may lead to an individual awareness of our own food relationship.

    How might we enable humans to catch up with the food environment today?

    This conversation seeks to consider design research practices around critical and speculative design which have been criticised for their lack of public engagement and awareness of their political and normative positions. In particular, we are interested in the ways in which feminist speculative fabulation offer alternative approaches through attention to core feminist arguments around corporeality, materiality, embodiment, affectivity and experientiality.     Honda “Hermes” the intuitive driving machine

     

    The way in to this project was with an open mind to create a new type of road vehicle, with focus on driving experience.

    The result is a three wheel self balancing vehicle which is manoeuvred by intuitive steering. The product was developed out from a face down, head first body position to increase the experience of motion and freedom.

    As the vehicle accelerates to higher speeds the driver position is changed to a more horizontal posture resulting in a flying sensation close to the road.

    Honda Hermes is designed for people in search for new experience. The vehicle is to be used at public roads and can give extraordinary driving experience within the speed limits.

    Camera makers are now increasingly adding WiFi chips to cameras to make transferring photos to smartphones or computers easier. At the same time this new technology brings on the opportunity to rethink what a connected camera could be and how it might shape our relationship with these devices. As the features in our consumer cameras start to move beyond physical constraints of the device itself, we will rely more on the device’s inherent character to make sense of it. Through multiple workshops, experiments, mockups and prototypes I explored a set of alternative characters and concepts for our digital consumer cameras and ultimately give an example of how a playful camera might inspire us to look at ourselves and the world around us with new eyes. 

    The resulting provocation is KOPPLA, a prototype of an Internet-connected camera that treats its owners as a creative collective. It offers inspiring creative challenges at the touch of a button. These challenges come from other camera owners in the collective, from local communities or from organizations interested in gathering personal perspectives. The final design aims to provoke new ideas for what the industry considers a connected camera to be. In that sense, as a connecting rather than connected camera, KOPPLA goes beyond offloading photographs to a smartphone or the Internet – instead connecting its owners to new places, people and ideas.

    „ What if Adaptive Personalization excelled Hardware Customization? “ Adaptive Vehicle Personalization

    Human mobility is about to create a generation of " Movers"  - a new breed of mobility users with global transportation  needs and a connection to multiple urban areas  already from a young age. Expectations towards mobility go towards adaptable and personalized solutions and technological advancements should enable a strategy in which one vehicle could adapt to multiple qualities.

    The final result is an adaptable urban mobility solution designed for global membership use in the year 2025. The intention of the project has been to holistically investigate how Vir tual Reality can influence the design process and result of interior and exterior. The goal has been to inspire and to show a believable way of how in the future adaptive personalization could excel hardware customization in order to suit the different and changing needs of various mobility service users.

    The process industry is the subject of increasing automation. As a step in this direction, the control of whole industrial plants has been centralized into small rooms. Here the process can be monitored and manually controlled if needed. The few operators still employed are expressing boredom due to everything being automated and feeling disconnected from the industrial environment where the work is carried out.

    By introducing tangibles into the control environment, that gap between factory floor and control room can be breached. Through simulating the rich experience of the production process, the operators could be engaged to work together with the automation software.

    Field research was done together with the project partners ABB and Swedish ICT. It provided a first hand experience of the context, the users and their problems. Working with a HCD approach, quickly prototyped solutions were discussed with users and stakeholders in the project.

    The result is a number of tangibles that utilizes their physical form and contemporary research in the field. This creates a stronger relationship between the operators and their equipment, gaining both an intuitive understanding and a tool for directly manipulating the equipment they control. The result cannot be discussed in greater detail due to patenting inquiries.

    The increase in the pace of life is becoming very tangible yet it is not visible to us in a qualitative way. Technological advancements offer us a life without friction where we can go full speed, but with this change we lose our windows for reflection and slowing down. Our pace is mostly determined by people or machines around us and we rarely have a chance to listen to our own rhythm, users and designers alike.

    With this project, the sustainability of the human being was questioned, particularly in the work life, where our pace is the highest. An exploratory and partially critical approach was engaged in the process and different methodologies have been explored. The result, a system of objects, aim to visualize one’s pace while criticizing the frictionless environments we create as designers.

    Kitchen choreographies: Homes, things and modern movements2016Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)

    Thinking of things in relation to users and use, there is always some kind of action involved in the usage of things (or interaction, as contemporary design would have it): an action that happens in time and over time, and that more often than not involves movement.  This paper investigates how time – seen in relation to the physical dwelling, the objects in it and the people living there, using things – have been the basis for proposing new designs for things and homes, literally new practices of “modern movements”, in the homes of 1940s Sweden.

    The home and its’ everyday things and practices has over the years emerged as a research theme  within design history as well as in other disciplines. Relationships between dwelling, architecture and the ideals of modern living manifest in floor plans and city plans have been explored, as have the styles and aesthetics of things and buildings. Relationships between people and everyday things and environments have opened up for research into how things and people reciprocally build both meanings and practices, as well as how design scripts actions and behaviours. Many studies focus on the kitchen: its’ physical design, the objects related to it and – not least – the (mainly women’s’) work and values associated with it. The Frankfurt kitchen in the late 1920s, for example, has become almost a standard example of how ideas of rationality and modernity were brought into the equation of solving problems of low (or non-existent) standards of housing to address issues of economy in planning and building. Such examples also illustrate interests in scripting new behaviour specifically in the kitchen; behaviours that extended also to the home, and on a larger scale to life and society in general within the modern movement.

    In the process of forming the Swedish welfare state, ‘the home’ was central both as a metaphor and as an area of reform and rethinking. In parallel to the planning and building of rational housing to address the appalling housing situation in Sweden, there were similar concerns for planning, education and reform of how homes were actually used and inhabited. A focal point came to be the kitchen, where the movements and actions of women were investigated systematically and scientifically with the threefold aim of improving the building standards, finding the best design of kitchen utensils and equipment, and determining the best ways of working, acting and moving around in the kitchen. In this paper, studies of housework and household objects made by the Hemmens Forskningsinstitut (HFI, ‘The Home Research Institute’) in the late 1940s forms the basis of an analysis of the relationships between things in use and users in action, and how notions of rationality and repetition, optimisation of motions and methods, brought from industrial contexts came to define also what makes sense in a home.
