    Abstract [en]

    A number of smartphone apps have been developed in recent years to help people cope with stress and promote mental well-being. Such apps have attracted significant attention in current research. However, interaction design issues, such as usability and user experience, have so far been relatively unexplored. This paper presents a meta-analysis of studies of mobile apps for stress management and mental well-being, specifically focusing on interaction design issues. Through a scoping literature search we selected the total of 46 articles, published in the last decade, for qualitative in-depth analysis. The analysis reveals that the main interaction design issues addressed in the papers are ease of use, user engagement, and privacy. Key opportunities and challenges for future work are discussed.

    Robotic telepresence technologies are becoming ever more usable and affordable, as well as increasingly available as consumer products. In the coming years, a significant number of people are likely to encounter the technology for the first time, and many, if not most, of them are going to be “non-technical” users, that is, people who do not have special technical knowledge and skills of IT-professionals. Therefore, understanding how nontechnical users are getting familiar with robotic telepresence technology, how they perceive the technology, learn to control it, and relate it to their everyday work practices, is a topical research issue. This paper reports an empirical study, in which eight non-technical users, office workers who were not IT-professionals, were introduced to robotic telepresence and provided with a practical experience of acting as pilots of a remotely controlled robot. In follow up interviews the participants were asked to reflect on potential uses of the technology in their professional activities. The participants could successfully acquire basic navigation skills and reached a high level of spatial presence, but experienced problems with developing a "new body image”. When reflecting on the potential of the technology for supporting their work, the participants envisioned a number of benefits associated with remote physical mobility. The impact of the technology on the quality of workrelated social interactions was expected to be generally positive but somewhat limited.

    Mobile Remote Presence (MRP) technologies make it possible for the user to be mobile in a remote environment, which opens up new possibilities for interaction. However, this new functionality comes at a cost. The need for MRP system users to pay attention to both telecommunication and device navigation increases their cognitive load. Assessing the cognitive load of MRP system users is a timely research issue, which is addressed in this paper both conceptually and empirically. We argue that Secondary Task (ST) techniques have certain advantages over existing Subjective Rating Scales (SRS) instruments, and report a study, in which a particular ST technique, a visual monitoring task, was employed to assess MRP pilot’s cognitive load. The empirical evidence from the study indicates that the method provides additional valuable insights into MRP pilots’ user experience.

    The paper reports a study in which two aspects of interaction design - human interaction with technology and acting through technology were analyzed in the context of participatory sessions having the focus group format. The sessions were conducted as a part of redesigning a novel digital artifact, a web-based project management tool. An initial prototype of the artifact was introduced to two different groups of participants possessing expertise in, respectively, human-computer interaction (HCI) and teaching and learning, a key target application domain for the tool. Re-design suggestions provided by each of the focus groups were found to address issues with both user interface and functionality of the prototype. The main difference between the groups was in whether they primarily focused on interaction efficiency or artifact's integration into a larger social and technological context. Implications of the study for further development of participatory methods in interaction design are discussed.

    The general problem addressed in this paper is supporting a more efficient communication between remote users, who control telepresence robots, and people in the local setting. The design of most telepresence robots does not allow them to perform gestures. Given the key role of pointing in human communication, exploring design solutions for providing telepresence robots with deictic gesturing capabilities is, arguably, a timely research issue for Human-Robot Interaction. To address this issue, we conducted an empirical study, in which a set of low fidelity prototypes, illustrating various designs of a robot's gesture arm, were assessed by the participants (N=18). The study employed a mixed-method approach, a combination of a controlled experiment, elicitation study, and design provocation. The evidence collected in the study reveals participants' assessment of the designs, used in the study, and provides insights into parti.cipants' attitudes and expectations regarding gestural communication with telepresence robots in general.

The workshop will assess the potential of ecological perspectives in HCI for supporting rich and meaningful analysis, as well as innovative design, of interactive technologies in real-life contexts.

    This paper reports a study of the use of activity theory in human-computer interaction (HCI) research. We analyse activity theory in HCI since its first appearance about 25 years ago. Through an analysis and meta-synthesis of 109 selected HCI activity theory papers, we created a taxonomy of 5 different ways of using activity theory: (1) analysing unique features, principles, and problematic aspects of the theory; (2) identifying domain-specific requirements for new theoretical tools; (3) developing new conceptual accounts of issues in the field of HCI; (4) guiding and supporting empirical analyses of HCI phenomena; and (5) providing new design illustrations, claims, and guidelines. We conclude that HCI researchers are not only users of imported theory, but also theory-makers who adapt and develop theory for different purposes.

    Technology-supported stress management is one of the most promising and practically important application areas for intelligent companions, that is, digital assistants evoking empathy and personal attachment. In this paper, we employ the method of Futuristic Autobiographies (FABs) to elicit participants' attitudes and reflections regarding an imaginary digital assistant for stress management, implemented as an intelligent companion. For the purposes of the study, we developed six FABs, highlighting a range of potential issues related to the use of intelligent companions. The participants (N=17) provided their responses to the FABs by completing a survey, and a subset of the participants (N=5) also took part in follow-up online interviews. A thematic analysis of the results revealed six main themes: objectivity of the digital assistant, human-likeness, context-specificity of assistant's behavior, user's control, stress management, and user privacy. The themes, as well as the implications of the results for the design and use of intelligent stress management companions, are discussed.

    Collaboration mediated by digital technologies is typically considered an alternative to face-to-face collaboration. However, in real-life settings “virtual” and “physical” collaboration are often complementary, rather than mutually exclusive. This paper reports an empirical study of a hybrid physical/virtual ecology of collaboration at a senior high school in Sweden, a massively collaborative environment featuring different concurrently used groupware. The study focused on teachers’ collaborative multitasking, that is, management of multiple collaborative activities. The findings indicate that the use of groupware in the setting presented a significant challenge for the teachers, who experienced collaboration overload. To keep themselves updated on current developments in their teams and projects, the teachers developed a variety of strategies for monitoring several collaboration spaces and switching between different technologies. The identified problems and strategies of collaborative physical/virtual multitasking are discussed in relation to existing research and design of supportive technology.

    The paper systematically explores the social dimension of external interruptions of human activities. Interruptions and interruption handling are key issues in human-computer interaction (HCI) and computer-supported cooperative work (CSCW) research. However, existing research has almost exclusively dealt with effects of interruptions on individual tasks. In this paper we call for expanding the scope of analysis by including the effect of interruptions on the social context. We identify four facets of the social “ripple effect” of interruptions: location, communication, collaboration, and interpersonal relation. We discuss the advantages of extending the notion of interruptions and its implications for future research.

    The paper reports a study of a videoconference-based environment in decentralized university education and factors contributing to the success of teaching and learning in the environment. The focus of the paper is on the role of a person having the formal responsibilities of a technician. An ethnographic study conducted over the course of a year revealed that the contribution of this person far exceeded the scope of formal responsibilities. The person, who was acting in the setting as a facilitator, was found to possess expertise, which was critically important for supporting interaction between remote participants at several levels, such as attention management, time management, acquisition of setting-specific skills, and coordination within a larger institutional context. The findings suggest that "supra-situational" activities can be important factors for the successful functioning and development of emerging learning environments.

    Understanding how people employ digital artifacts in their everyday settings to create more advanced interactive habitats is becoming a key issue in HCI research. This paper aims to contribute to this research by reporting an empirical study of artifact ecologies and their dynamics in day-to-day activities at a hotel. We describe two technological solutions, designed and implemented by people in the settings: (a) converting a paper-based cleaning staff roster into a Google Doc, and (b) switching from a traditional fax machine to email as a technology for handling communication with suppliers. We discuss a range of factors affecting such user-driven innovations, as well as the impact of the technologies on larger-scale interactive habitats.

    Abstract [en]

    The concept of affordances originates from ecological psychology; it was proposed by James Gibson (1977, 1979) to denote action possibilities provided to the actor by the environment. In the late 1980s Norman (1988) suggested that affordances be taken advantage of in design. The suggestion strongly resonated with designers’ concern about making possible uses of their products immediately obvious, and soon the concept came to play a central role in interaction design and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). This chapter discusses the origins, history, and current interpretations of affordances in HCI research, and reflects on the future of affordances as an HCI concept.

    The aim of this paper is to analyze the concept of mediation in the context of current HCI research, with a special focus on the use of the concept to inform and guide the design of interactive artifacts and environments. The paper discusses the adoption of the mediational perspective on digital technology in HCI and reflects on how the perspective has informed design-oriented research in the field. It is concluded that there is a general trend of moving beyond relatively basic notions of technology mediation toward a more differentiated view of mediation as a complex, multi-dimensional phenomenon. The paper outlines a set of dimensions, which characterize technological mediation in relation to properties of mediational means, subjects and objects of mediated activities, levels of mediation, dynamics of mediation, and context. Design implications of adopting a view of technological mediation as a multi-dimensional phenomenon are discussed.

    Abstract [en]

    The paper discusses some of the key HCI studies dealing with mortality and death and concludes that the overall research perspective, adopted in most of the studies -- namely, conducting empirical analyses of user practices and trying to improve the practices through iterative cycles of design and evaluation -- is not fully appropriate for understanding the impact of technology on how people experience their own mortality. The paper discusses an alternative research perspective, existential HCI, and argues that adopting that perspective can usefully complement existing studies related to mortality and death. A tentative analysis of "digital afterlife", understood as the persistence of a person's digital possessions and traces beyond the person's life span, from an existential HCI perspective, is presented. Prospects and challenges for future development of an existential perspective in HCI research are discussed.

    The paper discusses recent developments in mobile remote presence (MRP) and argues that providing support for referential gesturing is critically important for exploiting the full potential of MRP systems in creating inclusive smart environments. By bringing in insights from research in interaction design and related fields the paper proposes a set of tentative requirements to referential gesturing support for MRP systems. Some of the key challenges for designing referential gesturing in the context of mobile remote presence are identified.

    Abstract [en]

    The profound impact of digital technologies on human life makes it imperative for HCI research to deal with the most fundamental aspects of human existence. Arguably, insights from existential philosophy and psychology are highly relevant for addressing such issues. Building on previous attempts to bring in existential themes and terminology to HCI, this paper argues that Yalom's notion of "the givens of existence", as well as related work in experimental existential psychology, can inform the development of an existential inquiry framework in HCI. The envisioned framework is intended to complement current approaches in HCI by specifically focusing on the existential aspects of the design and use of technology. The paper reflects on possible ways, in which existential concepts can support HCI research, and maintains that adopting an existential framework in HCI would be consistent with the overall conceptual development of the field.

    Abstract [en]

    The concept of “the object of activity” plays a key role in current research based on activity theory. However, the usefulness of this concept is somewhat undermined by the fact that a number of problems related to its meaning and the context of use remain unsolved. This paper is an attempt to address some of these problems. The paper focuses on three potential sources of uncertainties and inconsistencies, which may be obstacles to a more fruitful application of the concept of the object of activity in both research and practice. The first source is difficulties related to translation of ideas, originally formulated by Alexey Leontiev in Russian, to English. The second source is different interpretations of the concept of the object of activity within two contemporary approaches in activity theory, the one developed by Alexey Leontiev and the one developed by Yrjö Engeström. Third and finally, the paper finds the original Leontiev’s definition of the object of activity as ”its true motive” problematic and calls for separating the object of activity from the motive of activity. The implications of that separation are discussed.

    The field of interaction design to date has been predominantly concerned with designing products, that is, devices, systems, and more recently services. A growing body of theoretical and empirical analyses suggests that the scope of interaction design needs to be expanded: An explicit concern of the field should include not only helping designers create better products but also helping people themselves create better environments for their work, learning, and leisure activities. In this article we argue that expanding the scope of interaction design beyond products requires a revision of some of the most central concepts in interaction design, including the notion of "the object of design" and our understanding of the impact of technologies on human practices. The aim of the article is to explore some of these conceptual challenges and discuss possible ways of dealing with them. We differentiate between intrinsic and extrinsic technology-enabled practice transformation, and foreground the need for interaction design research and practice to more directly deal with analysis and construction of technology-enhanced activity spaces. The implications of these notions for the research agenda of interaction design are discussed.

    The paper describes the design, implementation, and tentative evaluation of a web-based coordination tool named Tabula. The tool employs a shared representation that has the form of a task/participant table. Individual cells of the table are designed as minimalist interactive workspaces, each supporting a particular user in performing a particular task. Integrating overviews of the overall structure of participants' tasks with task management features within a single representation is intended to help the user identify pending tasks, facilitate access to task-related resources, and support an automatic update of projects' visual representations. A prototype of the tool has been evaluated within an informal web-based course. The results of the evaluation are discussed.

    This paper reports a study of pilots of a robotic telepresence system, exploring the relationship between the pilots' experience of physical presence, overall user experience, and task parameters. The pilots (N=12) performed a set of tasks characterized by different Task Focus (Process vs. Outcome) and Navigation Difficulty (Low vs. High); their experience was assessed by using a set of subjective rating scales. It was found that the experience of being physically present in a remote location positively correlated with self-reported gaming skills, objective indicators of navigation efficiency, as well as feelings of being safe and relaxed. No significant effects of task focus and navigation difficulty were found.

    A telepresence robot is a mobile telecommunication device, remotely controlled by its "pilot", which supports an embodied presence of the pilot in a different location (the "local setting"). A common problem with telepresence robots is their limited capability of interacting with the physical environment. A potential solution, explored in the present study, is supporting "double remote control" interaction, that is, making it possible for the pilot, in addition to remotely controlling the robot, to also remotely control objects in the local setting. In the study we enacted meaningful scenarios of employing telepresence robots with and without double remote control capabilities. The evidence collected in the study allows us to tentatively assess the effects of double remote control interaction on user experience and social context. Issues for future research are discussed.

    Most robotic telepresence systems are severely limited in their ability to physically interact with surrounding objects. The solution we propose, "double remote control", or DRC, is to make it possible for the user controlling the telepresence robot ("the pilot"), to also remotely control objects in the robot's physical environment. This paper reports a user experience study, comparing a Wizard of Oz-style prototype of a DRC-enabled environment with a control condition, in which DRC was not enabled. The participants, who acted as either remote pilots (NP=16) or local people in the robot's proximity (NLP=16), were asked to carry out joint activities in each of these conditions. It was found that DRC had a generally positive effect on how participants, and especially pilots, performed their tasks, but the impact of DRC on the social context of interaction was mixed.

    The covid-19 pandemic has severely limited the possibility for people to meet physically, which forced many individuals and organizations to employ online meetings as their predominant mode of communication. A potential problem with the unprecedentedly central role of online meetings in a wide range of everyday activities is the disruption it may cause to intersubjective experiences, an intuitive mutual understanding of the participants and their thinking of themselves as a group, a "we". To address this problem, about half a year into the pandemic we conducted an exploratory study, in which the informants (N=36) completed a survey, comprising a set of Likert scales and open-ended questions focusing on "team spirit", moment-to-moment coordination, emotions, and the sense of presence in online and physical meetings. The results indicate that online meetings may present particular challenges regarding the experience of "we-ness", and different types of online meetings can be experienced differently. Implications of the results for further research are discussed.

    In recent years, involving users in the design of Internet of Things (IoT)-based solutions for everyday settings has received significant attention in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) studies. This paper aims to contribute to that line of research by proposing an interaction design approach, which extends the scope of user-driven design beyond concept generation to support interaction design activities within the entire task-artifact cycle. We analyze key challenges for creating IoT-based solutions for domestic environments, and argue that dealing with such challenges requires adopting an approach characterized by (a) a focus on users’ activity spaces rather than individual objects and tasks, (b) support and assessment of the actual, and sufficiently extended, use experience of new solutions, (c) augmenting existing everyday objects, to transform them into smart ones, rather than developing entirely new smart objects, and, last but not least, (d) combining IoT prototyping and digital fabrication to ensure physical and esthetical integration of new designs into concrete everyday settings.

    Robotic technologies are being increasingly integrated into real life settings. The adoption of robots by the society is transcending the initial fascination with novel technology and is gradually entering a new phase, characterized by a massive impact of the technology on various aspects of our everyday lives. These developments emphasize the need to better understand how robotic technologies shape, and are being shaped by, the physical and social contexts in which they are used. The aim of the proposed workshop is to explore possible ways of addressing this issue by bringing together a group of human-robot interaction (HRI) researchers within the ECCE context in order to reflect on a range of methods, concepts, and design approaches that could help understand, anticipate, and deal with HRI challenges associated with the upcoming "robotic revolution".
