    Abstract [sv]

Estimation of interregional empty rail freight car flows2002Report (Other (popular science, discussion, etc.))
    Abstract [en]

An important and to often neglected aspect in every freight transportation system is the presence of empty car flows. Empty car flows arise due to variations in the transportation demand, in the sense that in bound and out bound transportation flows differ with respect to volume or weight. This heterogeneity manifest variations in loaded as well as empty freight flows as a result of different branch structures and trade patterns between regions. Since a train or block generally is composed of both loaded and empty cars the empty ones contribute to a significant congestion effect in the freight transportation network. Thus it is motivated to explicitly consider empty freight car flows in tactical and strategic network flow models. This paper presents a method to estimate the empty car freight flows; the method has been tested on data from the Swedish freight railway system. We provide an estimation procedure for the static deterministic case, cast as a mathematical programming problem. Our approach enhances the modelling capabilities compared to existing models through the possibility to include expertise knowledge. The estimated empty car flow may serve as an input in a column generation model that solves a multimodal multicommodity network flow problem.

Marshallian sources of growth and interdependent location of Swedish firms and households2010Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis consists of three papers that examine Marshallian sources of growthand interdependent location of Swedish firms and households.

Paper [I] examines the impact of static and dynamic knowledge externalitiesand their impact on Swedish market operating firms growth pattern between1997 and 2005. The three types of externalities are: (i) Marshall-Arrow-Romer(MAR), (ii) Jacobs, and (iii) Porter. My empirical findings for the 40 industriescan briefly be summarized in the following points: (i) static MAR, Jacobsand/or Porter externalities are present in all but nine industries; (ii) except for five cases all industries are exposed to one or more of the MAR, Jacobs and/orPorter type of dynamic externalities; (iii) contrary to previous studies but inline with theoretical predictions, we do find positive and significant effects forstatic as well as dynamic Jacobs externalities.

Paper [II] focuses on the presence of agglomeration economies in the form of labor pooling and educational matching and their impact on economic growth in Swedish manufacturing and service industries from 1997 to 2005. To accomplish this I employ a translog production function that enables me to decompose the total agglomeration elasticities into returns that accrue to: direct agglomeration effects, an indirect effect of agglomeration at given input levels, a cross agglomeration effect of matching on labor pooling and vice versa. Household services is the single industry where both the labor pooling and matching hypothesis is supported by our data. Publishing is the sole instance of betterinput usage due to matching consistent with the theoretical claim.

Paper [III] studies the interdependent location choices of households and firms expressed as population and employment in Swedish municipalities. Using a model of the Carlino-Mills type to investigate the impact of various location attributes such as differences in public revenue and spending patterns, accessibility to jobs and potential workforce, quality of the labor pool, concentration ofcommercial, private and public services. The findings suggest that fiscal factors significantly alters the impact of housing and accessibility attributes compared to exiting studies on Swedish data. Another finding, in line with previous studies, indicate that there is a significant degree of inertia in household and firm location choices.

Population and employment location in Swedish municipalities 1994-20042012In: The annals of regional science, ISSN 0570-1864, E-ISSN 1432-0592, Vol. 48, no 3, p. 743-762Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The present paper focuses on the location choices of population and employment in Swedish municipalities from 1994 to 2004. Since firm and household location choices exert an apparent influence on municipality population and employment growth, we investigate the impact of various attributes, such as, differences in public revenue and spending patterns between municipalities, amenities, accessibility to jobs, quality of the labour pool, as well as concentration of commercial, private and public services, etc. To analyze the impact of the various attributes and the interdependence between population and employment change, we use a model of the Carlino–Mills type.

Rapport om Norrlands tillväxt 1993-20022006Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Potential Freight Volumes of the Kvarken Ferry Link: Base Report to the Midway Alignment project2014Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The Kvarken Ferry Link is a maritime transport connection between Sweden and Finland. This report is a deliverable from the Centre for Regional Science (CERUM) at Umeå University to the Midway Alignment project. The purpose of the report is to analyse the freight demand for the ferry by estimating the maximum potential freight transport in the catchment area of the ferry. The analysis is based on a model analysis of the maximum potential freight volumes in the catchment area of the ferry across the Kvarken strait using input data from the Swedish national freight modelling system Samgods. The results are combined with a scenario analysis where the effect of different forecasts for the Kvarken ferry is studied. The analysis might serve as an input in a subsequent analysis of the market potential and transport demand for the ferry link between Vaasa in Finland and Umeå in Sweden.
