[{"_id":"project:1413","_type":"project","abstract":{"en":"The recent influx of migrants in Sweden paired with the negative effects of anti-immigrant attitudes make the effectiveness in combating prejudice a crucial issue for Swedish Government. Unfortunately, the existing anti-prejudice intervention programs have had weak effects. This unsettling finding can be partly accounted for by our poor understanding of prejudice development. In particular, we still know little about the individual and social factors contributing to prejudice formation as well as about the mechanisms underlying the effects of the social context. Thus, this project aims to facilitate our understanding of prejudice development by examining (1) the long-term relation between the individual factor, i.e. adolescents? empathy, and their anti-immigrant attitudes, (2) the long-term relation between the social context, i.e. parental socialization, and adolescents? prejudice, and (3) the role of youth empathy in mediating parental effects. These issues will be addressed with a longitudinal analysis of an existent, 6-wave dataset on adolescents (13 to 20 years old) and their parents. This project will address questions that have been understudied and hence it will advance theory and research. The findings will offer insight into the role of empathy and parents in development of anti-immigrant attitudes. They will also offer guidelines for intervention programs based on working with youth empathy and parents to decrease prejudice in multiethnic societies such as Sweden."},"project_id":"2016-04165_VR","identifier_short":"2016-04165","dates":{"start_date":"2016-11-01","end_date":"2018-12-31"},"organizations":[{"funding":[{"_id":2,"id":"202100-5208","sv":"Vetenskapsrådet","en":"Swedish Research Council"}]},{"coordinating":[{"_id":715,"id":"202100-2874","sv":"Umeå universitet","en":"Umeå University"}]}],"people":[{"project_leaders":[{"orcid":"0000-0003-2087-1869","name":"Miklikowska, Marta","role":"principal_investigator","affiliation":[{"_id":715,"id":"202100-2874","sv":"Umeå universitet","en":"Umeå University"}]}]},{"other_personnel":[]}],"tags":[{"_id":11736,"id":"50101","sv":"Psykologi (exklusive tillämpad psykologi)","en":"Psychology (excluding Applied Psychology)"}],"titles":{"sv":"Att lära sig fördomar: Empatin och föräldrarnas roll i utvecklingen av ungdomars invandrarfientliga åsikter.","en":"Learning to be prejudiced: The role of empathy and parents in development of adolescents? anti-immigrant attitudes. This self-serving bias protects the ego or social identity from responsibility while increasing prejudice towards the out-group blamed for feelings of frustration. In this research note, we test this theory using five waves of the Czech Household Panel Study (CHPS 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020), which captures the tail end of the 2015–2016 refugee crisis in Europe through the lockdown in response to COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. We focus attention on both personal and professional domains, asking if factors like subjective health, work stress, relationship dissatisfaction, life dissatisfaction, and unhappiness contribute to attitudes towards immigrants over time. We also ask whether socio-political attitudes such as distrust in the government, social distrust, and political disinterest are associated with changes in anti-immigrant sentiment. Results show that personal and professional domains help explain between-individual differences in attitudes towards immigrants, while trust in the government and society are related to both within-individual change and between-individual differences in anti-immigrant sentiment.","DOI":"10.1177/01979183231177971","ScopusId":"2-s2.0-85162683480","NBN":"urn:nbn:se:umu:diva-207926","issue":"2","volume":"58","page":"573-592","container-title":"The international migration review","ISSN":"1747-7379","keyword":"scapegoat theory; anti-immigrant sentiment; panel study","publisher":"Sage Publications","published":[{"raw":"2023-05-05T00:25:00.000+02:00"}],"created":[{"raw":"2023-05-05T00:25:20.191+02:00"}],"updated":[{"raw":"2024-07-02T16:01:37.126+02:00"}],"URL":"https://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:umu:diva-207926"}],"links":[{"type":"pid","link":"https://umu.diva-portal.org/smash/api/project/swecris/project:1413"}]}]
