Den geologiska kartläggningen av månen handlade ytterst om en utvidgning av kalla kriget. På samma sätt är det inte bara allmän nyfikenhet som ligger bakom det nymornade vetenskapliga intresset för vår närmsta himlakropp.

Under kalla kriget tog det amerikanska försvarets forskningsmyndighet initiativ till ett världsomspännande system av seismografiska mätstationer. Syftet var att detektera underjordiska kärnvapenprovsprängningar och bevaka att förbud mot sådana upprätthölls. Inom detta World Wide Standardized Seismograph Network etablerades närmare 130 mätstationer. Som framgår av denna artikel var en av dessa placerad i Umeå, närmare bestämt i ett gammalt vattentorn på Teg.

This Open Access book is about the risks and the ethics of human germline gene editing, i.e., the possibility to make heritable changes to the DNA of early human embryos or germ cells. Is there something particularly morally problematic about editing the human germline? Is there something unique about germline editing, and, if so, does this suggest that we ought not to edit the human germline, or only in particular circumstances or for particular purposes? What would be a wise and responsible approach to editing the human germline from a moral perspective? The book has three broad aims. First, to present an inclusive map over the current scholarly debate on the ethics of human germline gene editing. Second, to provide a philosophical and critical guide to the various ideas and arguments in this debate. Third, to apply an ethics of risk perspective and defend a morally cautious position on human germline gene editing.

Exploring historical perspectives, this introduction to a thematic section of the journal Thule traces the evolution from pre-modern corporative rights to modern intellectual autonomy. The text delves into the tentions between academic ideals and external influences during societal shifts. Reference is made to the Magna Charta Universitatum, highlighting its adaption to a changing global landscape. Initiatives in Sweden are discussed, recognizing the imperative of safeguarding academic freedom amidst evolving dynamics and political uncertainties.
