Abstract [en]

This paper examines the ongoing work of Truth Commissions (TCs) and Truth and Reconciliation Commissions (TRCs) directed at the Indigenous Sámi in Norway, Sweden and Finland. Employing a scoping and comparative approach, and drawing on the concept of educationalisation and boundary work theory, it provides an updated analytical account of the T(R)Cs, including their aims, key areas of knowledge and anticipated actions. The paper highlights the multifaceted role of education, history and the history of education in these processes, and connects the T(R)Cs to a growing body of research and emerging academic debate. It concludes with a comparative discussion of the Nordic T(R)Cs and of the road that lay ahead. In doing so, the paper hopes to contribute to advancing the professional dialogue on the ongoing commissions and their educational and educationalising dimensions.

Abstract [en]

Remote teaching in Sweden has emerged as a response to the persistent challenges of rural education, including sparse populations, urbanisation, declining birthrates, and long travel distances. This study investigates the historical genesis of remote teaching in northern Sweden, particularly in small rural schools, where digital technologies have been used in K-12 education. Through a microhistory approach, we examine early developments in digital education, drawing from interviews with key stakeholders involved in school development and governance from the 1980s to 2010. The findings suggest that the integration of digital technologies in rural Swedish education was driven by both necessity and innovation, as schools sought solutions to sustain education in sparsely populated areas. The study contributes a historically contextualised perspective on remote teaching, emphasising the long-term challenges of rural schooling and the role of digital technologies in addressing these issues. By analysing the early adoption of digital education in Swedish rural municipalities, we provide insights into the evolution of remote teaching and its implications for future educational practices.

Abstract [en]

This open access book offers a thorough examination of the most important actor in schooling children from the Indigenous Sámi during the nineteenth century, namely the Swedish Missionary Society (SMS). In the late 1830s, the SMS created its first schools for Sámi children and youth in small rural villages in the northern inlands of Sweden. The missionary schools enrolled several thousand children in the approximately eighty-year-period they operated, for many decades being the predominant school for the Sámi. The impulse behind the creation of the SMS came from evangelical movements such as British Methodism, which helped to initiate the Stockholm-based society in 1835, and aided the startup of a school in the Swedish colony of Saint-Barthélemy in the West Indies. The society was supported by private donations, as well as financial aid and supervision from the Swedish Evangelical-Lutheran state church. It kept in operation between five to ten schools and orphanages until the so-called ‘nomadic school’ reform in 1913, when the missionary schools were either shut down, modified to become Swedish primary schools, or subsumed under the new and expanding state-governed nomadic school system.

By examining school practice aimed at Sámi pupils in Sweden, this book provides valuable insights into the overall organisation and curriculum of the missionary schools, their ideological driving forces, and their relation to global developments and the ongoing formation of the Swedish primary school system. Such knowledge helps deepen our understanding of the long-term organisation of Sámi education in Sweden, and more broadly within the Nordic countries. Through its analysis, this book seeks to develop the history of missionary education, as well as research into settler colonial and Indigenous schooling.

Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The present volume can be linked to a growing awareness of the potential in doctoral education for international experiences to deliver the pragmatic as well as values-based benefits of internationalisation (Jones & Killick, 2007). The former include the sharing of different perspectives on the field of study, alternative approaches to research and problem-solving, creating international collaboration and publication opportunities, developing research networks and offering career opportunities. The ‘values-based’ rationale for intercultural engagement is equally relevant at doctoral level as at other stages of education. Learning to work in multinational and multicultural teams and being open to different approaches and perspectives has become even more important as professional and project-based doctorates increase. Doctoral education is now much more than preparing candidates for academic careers.

Abstract [en]

This groundbreaking book highlights the profound impact of internationalization in doctoral education, offering a variety of models to align with student interests and needs.

It includes insights from over seventy contributors spanning more than thirty-five national contexts on six continents, who explore the values and benefits of internationalization at the doctoral level, such as social and cultural enrichment, academic and personal growth, network enhancement, and research collaboration, paving the way for meaningful career opportunities in academia or elsewhere. Evaluating the outcomes of internationalization and the development of researcher identities, the volume underscores the immeasurable value and impact of internationalized doctoral experiences while recognizing the importance of student agency. Reflections from students and graduates reveal the merits of international experiences but also address challenges and pitfalls, including environmental, economic, equity, and decolonization concerns.

With implementable recommendations for institutions, academics, and students, this important book offers guidance for the future of internationalization in doctoral education and emphasizes the importance of strategic institutional approaches. Internationalization of the Doctoral Experience: Models, Opportunities and Outcomes is essential reading for anyone interested in the evolving landscape and transformative potential of internationalization in doctoral education.
