Background: Intermittent closures of rural maternity units in northern Sweden disrupt access to essential sexual and reproductive health services, making intrapartum care unpredictable for local women. While long travel distances have been linked to adverse outcomes, less is known about how women view the closures and prepare for birth when local services are unavailable. Hence, the aim of this study is to analyse how women make sense of and negotiate the meaning of their pregnancy and childbirth in relation to intermittent maternity unit closures in rural contexts.

Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 women who were pregnant or had given birth between May 2024 and August 2025 and lived in the catchment area of a rural maternity unit with repeated closures. Interviews were conducted in Swedish in September–November 2025, transcribed verbatim and analysed using discourse psychology to identify interpretative repertoires and subject positions.

Results:The closures created a discursive gap in which established expectations about where and how birth should take place no longer functioned as stable points of reference. Three interpretative repertoires were identified: equity and legitimacy, where women framed rural living as a chosen life yet treated secure maternity care as non-negotiable; moral responsibility, where risk management shifted from system-level preparedness to women’s own planning, including preparing for both hospital and roadside birth; and bodily vulnerability and dignity, where distance, admission thresholds and travel reshaped bodily labour, dignity and help-seeking, sometimes leading women to delay or avoid contacting healthcare services despite their concerns.

Conclusion: Intermittent closures disrupt access to maternity care and shift the responsibility for managing uncertainty and risk from the healthcare system to women themselves. Access to sexual and reproductive health services is more than a matter of geographical availability; it is shaped by how responsibility and legitimacy are negotiated in practice. Maternity services function as a clinical service and as a condition for whether family life feels possible and sustainable in rural communities.

Humaniora är ett viktigt – men ibland underskattat – vetenskapsområde som behövs för att utbilda studenter för en komplex yrkesvardag och för att möta aktuella samhällsutmaningar. Humanistisk kompetens ger förmåga att tolka, förstå och sätta kunskap i ett kulturellt, historiskt och samhälleligt sammanhang. Humaniora hjälper oss att navigera i komplexa frågor som inte enbart handlar om effektivitet utan också om mänsklig förståelse och kontinuitet i det vi bygger och utvecklar. Humtank menar att det är viktigt att använda humanistisk kunskap i utbildningar för sådana yrken som kräver komplexa kunskaper. I den här rapporten står professionsutbildningar och humanioras roll inom dessa i fokus. På vilket sätt är humaniora redan idag integrerat i icke-humanistiska professionsutbildningar? Kan en sådan integrering ske på ett mer övergripande och strategiskt sätt, och i så fall hur? 

Cross-country skiing is a popular TV-sport in Sweden and several skiers have become sports heroes due to media representations. However, media events on TV have traditionally portrayed female and male athletes differently. Audiences’ attitudes can be influenced by repetitive representations when certain affects are connected to certain bodies. In this article I investigate how female and male cross-country skiers are portrayed in public service TV in Sweden (SVT), using material from the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti, Finland, 2017. The aim is to find out how the skiers are positioned with affect in anecdotes about them and how this contributes to intimization. The concept of affective positioning is used as a theoretical framework in this study, which involves a discursive production of identities through the meaning-making practices of expressing affect. The results reveal that there are asymmetries between how the female and male skiers are positioned with affect. Affective practices about the female skiers mostly position them with mental strength and sometimes in a personal discourse, as mothers, whereas the male skiers are only positioned in a professional discourse with both mental and physical strength and with the affect humour. Since the narratives are created asym-metrically media representations reproduce different notions about how female and male athletes are supposed to be, which femininities and masculinities are considered to fit in the sporting discourse.

Att använda humor kan ofta innebära att utöva makt. Det är både möjligt att utmana befintliga maktordningar och att försöka återskapa dem.

Response is an effective tool for exercising power in humour, since it can make a person seem funny. In the same way, the lack of response can make a person seem unfunny. In this article I argue that failed jokes make a female skiing pundit on TV seem humourless and that this is due to the other interlocutors refraining from giving adequate responses. The material is from a sports programme about cross-country skiing on Swedish Television. The aim of the case study is to find out how power is exercised discursively in humour that fails and to discuss possible implications the rejections may have on notions of gender. The theoretical framework used is a feminist post-structuralist discourse analysis in combination with an analysis of internal and external control mechanisms. The discursive practice of repeated rejections of the female pundit may have consequences for her possibilities in seeming humorous.

I den här artikeln är syftet att undersöka humorns potential att synliggöra och utmana funktionsnormativa föreställningar. Frågan som ställs till materialet är: Hur används humor för att synliggöra och utmana funktionsnormativitet i intervjusamtal mellan personer med egna erfarenheter av funktionsnedsättningar? Materialet till undersökningen utgörs av en svensk podd, där personer med normbrytande funktionalitet intervjuas av poddmakare som också de är rullstolsburna. Podden är ett medium där förutsättningarna för samtal skiljer sig från exempelvis andra traditionella medier eftersom de inte styrs av sändningsregler som traditionella medier gör. I analysen undersöks hur samtalsdeltagarna använder absurditet, över- och underdrifter samt överraskningseffekter för att synliggöra funktionsnormativitet. De tre teman som undersöks är föreställningar om (o)möjliga subjektspositioner, narrativet om det tragiska livsödet samt funktionsfullkomlighet som ideal. En av slutsatserna som diskuteras är att humorn som används indikerar att det finns samidentifikation hos samtalsdeltagarna genom att den både visar på att deltagarna har gemensamma erfarenheter som lyfts fram som absurda, och ibland olika erfarenheter eller inställningar, vilka förhandlas fram genom att de använder humor som ett sätt hantera situationer som skulle kunna bli socialt besvärliga.

Humour has the potential to challenge or reproduce norms, established power relations, preconceived notions and oppressive structures, not least for marginalized groups. The purpose of this article is to explore humour as a potential tool to make visible and challenge normative notions about disability. The question posed to the material is: How is humour used to make visible and challenge ableism in interview conversations between people with experiences of disability? The material for this study consists of a Swedish podcast, where people with different disabilities are interviewed by podcasters who are also disabled. The podcast is a medium where the conditions for conversations differ from other traditional media because they are not governed by broadcasting rules as traditional media are. In the analysis it is examined how the participants use absurdity, exaggerations, and understatements as well as surprise effects which makes ableism visible. The three themes examined are the notions of (im)possible subject positions, the narrative of the tragic life and the able-bodied ideal. One of the conclusions discussed is that the humour used indicates that there is co-identification among the participants which both shows that the participants have common experiences that are joked about as absurd, and sometimes different experiences or attitudes, which are negotiated by using humour as a way of dealing with situations that could be socially difficult.

Internet är en viktig arena för feministisk mobilisering. En memegenre som vuxit under senare år är broderimemet, feministiska budskap som är traditionellt broderade.    

Vårt projekt undersöker därför denna genres politiska potential. Hur skapar den feministisk gemenskap, kunskap och handling? Ett centralt teoretiskt begrepp i vår studie är memer: idéer, stilar och handlingar som sprids via kopiering. Broderierna är del i en feministisk skriftkultur med gemensamma interaktionella, textuella och lexikala mönster. Hur byggs feministisk gemenskap och vilken typ av feministisk handling möjliggörs genom användningen av humor i broderierna?
