Abstract [en]

This study investigates the uses and functions of swear words in children’s literature, analyzing Ulf Stark’s Rymlingarna (The Runaways, 2018) and Oskar Kroon’s Överallt och ingenstans (Everywhere and Nowhere, 2020). In both novels there are characters swearing recurringly, even though swear words are usually not frequently used in literature for young children. A starting point for the article is that the swear words seem to be important in the stories, that the function is not only to underline emotions, or create realism, but also to contribute to the themes of the books. First, the functions of swearing in language and literature are presented, and similarities with functions of humor are pointed out. The study shows that the use of swear words affects both what is being told, and how; they contribute simultaneously to the aesthetics and pedagogy of the novels. Through swear words, characters and close relationships are portrayed. Norms are challenged, and swearing is sometimes part of gaining agency and creating a room of one’s own for the characters. This also means that swearing affects subjectivity and how different characters come to understand themselves and others in the world. Finally, the swear words can be seen as connected to the theme, which in both novels discusses how we can continue to live, through grief and loss of loved ones.

Abstract [en]

The focus of this article is the songs performed by one of Sweden’s oldest bands, Sven-Ingvars. We analyse how meaning is assigned to certain kinds of lives and ways of living in the lyrics of 54 of the band’s most popular songs from the 1960s and onward. We do so with a particular focus on the construction of place and identity within the lyrics. Since previous research about Sven-Ingvars is meager and this article is centered on recurrent patterns and themes in their songs, a quantitative analysis was carried out in order to identify the recurring patterns of words, places, towns, themes, and so on. This is followed by a qualitative text analysis, with a particular focus on the constructed identity of the I – or self – in the lyrics, and the places described. The study shows that the texts are either placed within the geographical area of Värmland or within a more general rural area, both constructed in contrast to urban space and life. The place, as constructed within the lyrics, is distinguished by simplicity and continuity. The people populating this area appear to have lived there for quite some time and are very much familiar with the I within the lyrics. The I in the lyrics is someone who knows the true value of a lifelong monogamous relationship as well as the importance of not stressing about or striving towards wealth or success. The identity of the I is very much embedded within the place. By placing the stories within Värmland, the realistic impression of the lyrics is amplified, but as the places are also commonly framed as a general rural area, they portray places, people and ways of life otherwise rarely represented publicly. By enjoying the present and simple things in life, it’s the people occupying these spaces who have truly found the right way to live their lives.

Writing and becoming : constructions of literary writing in handbooks and textbooks 1979-2015
Abstract [en]

The focus of this study is descriptions of literary writing in pedagogical texts. The aim is to analyse how writing and writing subjects are constructed in pedagogical texts on writing published in Sweden between 1979 and 2015. The analysed texts comprise three different kinds: handbooks for creative writing, textbooks for upper secondary school and textbooks for teachers of writing. In the thesis the constructions of writing and writing subjects are connected to different discourses of writing as well as ideological tendencies in society.

The study starts by reviewing relevant research about writing in school, in leisure time or in the field of creative writing. Roz Ivanič’s framework for analysing discourses of writing is presented and expanded with two further discourses: the discourse of support and the market discourse. Furthermore, theoretical perspectives from Michel Foucault, Zygmunt Bauman and Richard Sennett are presented.

In the analysis constant and changing norms of writing are discussed in relation to the presented framework and theoretical perspectives. The analysis reveals the close connection between the writer and the written text, in the handbooks and in Strömquist’s Skrivprocessen. To succeed as a writer one needs to start from one’s own experiences, since it is crucial to put something personal, a part of oneself, into the writing. At the same time writing is said to create the writing subject, which means that one should both find – or create – and express the self through writing. After this, writing as either work or play, and the purpose of writing, are analysed. Chapter three discusses the handbooks and is chronologically structured. While writing during the 1980s was constructed as a political act, in recent years it is instead constructed as an activity aimed at finding happiness or making money. Chapter four analyses the textbook Svenska timmar and shows how literary writing was a key part of textbook writing in 1989, but is almost non-existent in the textbook from 2011. The construction of the writing subject goes from the playful and creative writer, to a writer concerned with being correct and writing accurately. In chapter five the results are linked to tendencies in society. The changes in the constructions of literary writing can be seen as part of a neo-liberal, individualized ideology, as well as an exception from, or counterpart, to the same. The final chapter concludes by discussing the constructions of writing and writing subjects, focusing on the connection between writing and reading – and the handbook as a genre.

Abstract [en]

Between 1979 and 2015 approximately 30-40 handbooks for creative writing were published in Sweden. While giving advices and information about writing, these handbooks construct both the idea of writing and the writer-to-be in specific and limited ways; they describe what creative writing is, why it should be done and by whom.

Through the lens of Roz Ivanič’s framework from “Discourses of Writing and Learning to Write” (2004) this presentation addresses the constructions of creative writing in Swedish handbooks published 1979-2015. The analysis focuses on the paradox between work and play in writing, and its connection to the purpose of creative writing, according to the handbooks. Is creative writing an act of passion or just a lot of hard work? What is the underlying cause of a will or need to write? And what can creative writing, hopefully, do? Discussing these questions, different discourses of writing become visible in the handbooks, during different times. The construction of writing is changing, which is connected to tendencies in the society.

The results suggest that the activity of writing means a possibility to dream about the future, even if what the writer-to-be can or should dream about, have different answers during different times. In the Swedish handbooks, creative writing goes from being constructed as something that might lead to social change, towards being constructed as something that might benefit the individual writer.
