Effect of activating the jaw motor system. Randomized controlled trials on patients with specific diagnoses related to temporomandibular disorders
Abstract [sv]
The treatment need owing to temporomandibular disorders (TMD) is estimated in the range 5 to 15% of the adult population. The condition causes impaired oral health and quality of life with affect on mood and ability to work. Dentists are trained to diagnose and manage patients with TMD, and more severe cases are referred to specialists in clinical oral physiology. TMD involves impaired capacity of the jaw function and commonly long-standing pain which deteriorates during function, such as chewing. Many different treatment modalities are used in clinical practice, of which splints serving as night guards are the most commonly advocated. The evidence of effective treatment regimes related to TMD is sparse. Our hypothesis is that activation of the jaw motor system with exercise aiming at enhanced capacity and long-term tolerance is a cost-effective treatment model. The aim of this research project is to develop the best possible knowledge how training affects the individual´s oral health and quality of life. The project will assess treatment outcome and cost effectiveness of supervised training, home-care training and soft splint on five different conditions, commonly found in the general population. The study will improve our knowledge of the effect of exercise compared to splint therapy and in relation to the best outcome of pain, dysfunction and cost-effectiveness. The results can be directly implemented in the dental health care for the benefit of the patient and the society
