Integrering av energibudgetar och födovävar hos arktiska bäckar i förändring
Tittel [en]
Integrating stream energy budgets and consumer food webs in changing arctic streams
Abstract [en]
Warming in the arctic is anticipated to melt permafrost, extend the growing season for terrestrial vegetation, and advance the range of vegetation both northward and upward in elevation. These effects are likely to facilitate a transition from shorter tundra species toward taller shrub and tree species. Such changes have the potential to alter adjacent stream ecosystems due to the effects of riparian vegetation on key habitat features. This project will evaluate how climate-change-induced shifts in terrestrial vegetation are likely to affect food webs and ecosystem function in arctic streams. Specifically, we will determine how this transition may affect energy flow of aquatic-derived versus terrestrial-derived carbon to stream consumers (salmonid fish and invertebrates). Sampling will occur at six sites positioned along a vegetation and elevation gradient in Arctic Sweden. The contribution of aquatic- versus terrestrial-derived carbon to consumers will be estimated with stable isotope analysis. These estimates will be coupled with seasonal and annual stream energy budgets (based on gross primary production (GPP) and ecosystem respiration (ER)) to evaluate resource utilization by consumers relative to trends in carbon loading. Collectively, this effort will improve our ability to understand and predict how arctic stream communities and food webs will respond to changing climate.
