Bacterial synergies in medical-device-associated infection
Abstract [en]
Medical-device associated infections give rise to large difficulties within health care including increased patient suffering, prolonged hospital stays and worsening morbidity. The majority of these infections relate to bacterial colonization of the foreign material forming microbial coatings called biofilms. These biofilms protect bacteria from antibiotics and the host immune system and it has been shown that biofilms incorporating several bacterial species may have improved capability to withstand external stresses. In this four year project, we will investigate bacterial synergies between different types of opportunistic pathogens isolated from patients with urinary catheters. We will investigate synergistic and antagonistic processes through studies of mono-species and multi-species consortia. We will study bacterial properties, biofilm formation and characterize metabolite profiles during colonization of materials surfaces, including antifouling coatings. This will enable us to identify and investigate synergies occurring between bacterial strains building fundamental knowledge about how opportunistic pathogens colonize medical devices. Furthermore, we will study how such synergistic behaviors can be prevented by coating materials with antifouling polymers. Thus, providing both fundamental knowledge and investigating a possible application for preventing biofilm-related infections from medical devices.
