What governs cell wall homeostasis in Bacteria?
Abstract [en]
Bacteria are protected from environmental offenses by a cell wall consisting of a strong peptidoglycan polymer. The cell wall preserves bacteria´s morphology and viability and so, the enzymes involved in the production and turnover of this structure are preferred targets for many of our most successful antibiotics. Men, emerging resistive infections are threatening the very foundations of modern medicine by eroding the efficacy of our antibiotic arsenal. Therefore, it is now more important than ever to understand the bacterial cell wall biogenesis and remodeling to find new and more effective methods to target it for the treatment of infectious diseases. In this research program, we use advanced analytical approaches combined with chemical genomics,microscopy and bioinformatics to develop the widest systematic survey to date of new players in the synthesis and regulation of the peptidoglycan structure. This will be the  first systems biology program on the bacterial cell wall . We strive to identify the full repertoire or cell wall determinants in different pathogens and develop new terrain about general and specifically specific mechanisms that support peptidoglycan homeostasis and are adaptive to relevant environments (eg, host). Finally, since the cell wall is one of the major Achilles heels of bacteria, this research has a strong potential to contribute to the discovery of new pathways that can be targeted in antimicrobial therapies.
