Abstract [sv]
Bacteria are protected from environmental offenses by an external cell wall. This structure consists of a strong yet elastic peptidoglycan polymer called the murein sacculus. Integrity of the sacculus is essential for bacterial viability and morphogenesis and thus, the enzymes involved in peptidoglycan metabolism have become preferred targets for antibiotic development. Our previous investigation demonstrated that many bacteria secrete D-amino acids as effector molecules to adapt to adverse environments. This case is probably only one of numerous mechanisms involved in the cross-regulation of complex microbial communities and thus, this original line focused on the plasticity of bacterial cell wall should lead to the discovery of many more of these elusive regulatory mechanisms. The investigation proposed here is a topic of the highest relevance to properly understand bacterial relations with neighboring organisms at all levels, from commensalism to pathogenesis and might lead to the discovery of new metabolic and regulatory pathways with a great potential to develop new antimicrobials and to control bacterial growth in a species specific fashion in natural environments. To accomplish our goals we will establish a highly functional net of cooperations both with domestic and international laboratories to promote a serious inter-disciplinary effort including expertise areas as diverse as microbiology, crystallography, chemistry and bio-informatics.
