Titel [sv]
Hur överlever träden vintern?
Titel [en]
How do trees survive the winter?
Abstract [en]
Trees - essential for civilization - can adopt two different strategies to handle the winter; deciduous shed their leaves in the autumn while evergreen retain them. A main challenge for deciduous trees is to correctly time the onset of leaf senescence, to ensure that nutrient retrieval is optimized, while conifer needles need to have super-efficient systems to handle high light intensities at very low temperatures. We will study the molecular mechanisms behind these adaptations. In one part of the project, we are for example using natural variation, genome resequencing and GWAS, as well as transcript profiling in aspen, to identify best candidate genes to regulate the trait, associations that then will be validated in a second populations and/or by constructing transgenic or genome edited aspens. In the second part, we will use genomic and transcriptomic data as well as biochemical and biophysical data to characterize the photosynthetic apparatus in spruce needles over the winter season. Also in this part will we generate genome-edited trees, targeting candidate proteins regulating certain photoprotective processes.
