This project, a cooperation Umeå universitet and Svenskt visarkiv (Centre for Swedish Folk Music and Jazz research), will study contemporary professional artistic music-making (in various genres). Focus is on the creative musicians´ conditions within a social framework where cultural policy, mediazation, and a growing experience- and event industry are important forces. The proejct will take the form of four sub-projects and a synthesis. One sub-project studies the effects of public subsidies on artistic work through an analysis of applications to the Swedish Arts Council (Kulturrådet) for grants for phonograms. Another sub-project will through case studies focus on how musicians combine different activities and projects in order to survive economically and artistically. The third project will study the increasing importance of festivals and its effects on music-making. The fourth project will study the tension between individual creaticity and collective identity, especially the expectations the musician have to face. The different sub-projects overlap partly and will be integrated from the beginning; furthermore, they will all survey what different forms of media representations and documentations that are produced by musicians, evaluate how well they are suited for research, and outline strategies for future collecting and documentation by music archives.
