Title [sv]
Föräldraskapets pedagogisering: En kritisk granskning av mötet mellan statligt föräldrastöd och föräldrars berättade livsvillkor
Title [en]
Educating parents: A critical study of the encounter between government parent support and parent?s narratives
Abstract [sv]
The purpose of the proposed study is to explore constructions of parenthood and family in parent education. Parent education and parent support are part of the Swedish governments? national strategy to improve children?s mental health. Previous research on parent support states that existing programs foremost address mothers (Bremberg, 2004). Surveys of parent support also shows that parents are mainly represented by ethnic Swedish, well educated, heterosexual nuclear families (Sarkadi, 2009). Also, parent education has primarily been studied from a medical perspective, mostly using quantitative data, focusing effects in terms of cost-effectiveness. Thus, we argue the need to explore parent education in the Swedish context from an educational perspective, by using discourse analysis to focus what ideals on parenthood and family are constructed within the context of parent education. These ideals will be examined as intersections of gender, sexuality, social class, ethnicity and ability. We also argue the need to study parent education with a qualitative approach, giving special attention to the voices of different parents. The data will consist of government policy, descriptions of municipal parent support initiatives and parents? narratives. Texts related to parent education on state and municipal levels will be analysed by using Bacchi?s (2009) approach for policy analysis. Interviews with parents will be interpreted by using critical discursive psychology (Edley, 2001).
