Title [sv]
Kemiska och toxikologiska egenskaper hos biobränslerelaterade förbränningsaerosoler - en unik experimentell och analytisk approach
Title [en]
Chemical and toxicological properties of biomass combustion aerosols - a novel experimental and analytical approach
Abstract [sv]
The objective is to; I) develop and apply a novel experimental and analytical approach to elucidate chemical characteristics and toxicological properties of fine (<1 µm) biomass combustion aerosol particles, and II) determine the influence of biomass fuel-, process- and operation variables on the detailed chemical aerosol particle speciation and toxicological properties. New experimental combustion set-ups and procedures will be developed in combination with the implementation of novel chemical (organic and inorganic) analytical fractionation and speciation methods of combustion aerosols as well as toxicological assessments. Of special importance for the project is the novel categorization approach for biomass combustion aerosols with step-wise increased mechanistic information related to chemical composition. Previous research largely lacks a sound consideration of fuel/ash transformation aspects in relation to fuel and technology implying that the generalizability and usefulness of the data is limited. This project will include technology and fuel concepts with relevance for in principal all kinds of biomass combustion in a systematic procedure that never has been performed previously, thus providing new information that will contribute to the identification of toxic culprit physicochemical properties of biomass combustion aerosol particles. This information can be further utilized for future health risk assessments, policy making and technological development.
