Title [sv]
SWE-2010-124 Those Left Behind - Female Migration and the Transnational Family in Latin America
Abstract [sv]
Migration from South (or East) to North, has dominated scholarship, but more than half of migrants from the South reside in another country in the South. The study has two aims. The first aim is to contribute to the field of development studies by exploring and critically re-asserting the transformations of Latin American ethnic and gender regimes in the context of interregional migrations with special focus on continuities and breaks in racist discourses and practices. The second aim is to contribute to the otherwise neglected research area on South-South migration, by taking as a point of departure the experience of women migrants employed as domestic workers. Empirically the study will be carried out in four case studies focusing on women who migrate alone from: 1) Peru to Chile, 2) Bolivia to Argentina, 3) Nicaragua to Costa Rica, and 4) Guatemala to Mexico.
