Title [sv]
Den genetiska basen för evolutionära anpasningar i asp (Populus tremula)
Title [en]
The genetics of adaptation in European aspen (Populus tremula)
Abstract [sv]
Detailed knowledge of the demographic history of the species under investigation is needed to determine how important these effects are relative to natural selection in shaping adaptive traits. The project will provide insights into the importance of intraspecific hybridisation for the evolution of adaptive traits. This is of direct relevance for understanding not only how these trees have adapted to current-day environmental conditions but also how the trees will respond to future environmental changes induced by global warming. It will also initiate one of the first studies of possible effects of epigenetic variation for adaptive traits in ecologically important species. Because of the experimental design with individual replicated at multiple sites it will be possible pinpoint how much epigenetic variation that exists on these different levels and to what extent this variation is induced by differing environmental conditions. Ultimately the hope is to shed some light on whether such epigenetic effects have played a major role in mediating rapid adaptation to changing climate conditions in P. tremula. If it indeed has done so, this will have important ramifications for predicting responses of organisms, such as P. tremula, to future environmental perturbations induced by a warming climate.
