Title [sv]
Leva eller låta dö: Identifiering av nya molekylära omkopplare som kontrollerar växters olika mörkerresponser
Title [en]
Live or let Die: Identification of Novel Molecular Switches Controlling the Different Responses to Darkness in Plants
Abstract [sv]
As photoautotrophs, plants depend upon the acquisition of light energy for their survival. Consequently, they have acquired different strategies to cope with perturbations in their light regime. For example, in response to darkness, plants can initiate two distinct developmental processes for their leaves: shade avoidance and senescence. While shade avoidance is an acclimation response that leads to the survival of the darkened leaves, senescence triggers their death. However, the signalling pathways and molecular mechanisms controlling the induction of senescence rather than shade avoidance remain unknown. The aim of this project is to dissect the two signal transduction pathways regulating the fate of a leaf in response to darkness and understand how a plant chooses between these 2 options. To do so, I will use an original experimental setup that allows me to discriminate senescence from a shade avoidance response. With a genetic screen, I will first identify key-genes controlling the darkness-dependent induction of leaf senescence. Secondly, I will assess whether these genes are also involved in the signalling pathway(s) mediating the shade avoidance response. Finally, I will establish the regulatory networks used by a plant to control the fate of a leaf in response to darkness. All together, this work will greatly contribute to understanding the fundamental mechanisms enabling a plant to validate an adaptive strategy over another one.
