Title [sv]
Perspektivtagande hos framtida poliser: effekter av utbildning och praktik
Title [en]
Perspective taking ability in future police officers: effects of training and professional practice.
Abstract [en]
This project investigates if and how empathic ability, and especially cognitive perspective taking of future police officers is developed during their education and professional practice. The main focus will be on the professional practice period, since a hypothesis is that police culture, and experience from real life is of importance. The project has a longitudinal design, where instruments developed based on theories of empathy, as well as theory of mind, are used to measure police students? empathic ability each year throughout their education. An additional purpose is to examine the validity of the results of the instruments used. It is critical that the results from the instruments are valid to be able to make correct inferences/conclusions, but it will also add knew knowledge to existing research on the measurement of empathic and perspective taking ability. The data will include approximately 250 police students. In order to understand more about reasons for potential changes, the information from the empathy instruments will be combined with information on the students? experiences and attitudes. The data will be analysed mainly by quantitative methods, however qualitative methods, such as interviews, are also used to ensure a more complete picture of the phenomenon studied. The results with be important as piece of information on how to prepare future police officers for their future profession, and for learning about how to measure and develop perspective taking.
