Grapes are considered the most important fruit crop of the world and wine as an important product that significantly contribute to revenue globally through product sales and tourism. Enabling technologies for control and monitoring requires fundamental chemical and biological understanding of what critical factors influence the finished wine from thegrapes growing in the vineyard through fermentation to the bottled wine. This project will provide a unique opportunity to develop a new conceptual framework for a systems understanding of wine that is influenced by the starting materials, the metabolism of biological agents and the chemical reactions in the final product - all this in collaboration with the Institute for Wine Biotechnology, Department of Viticulture and Oenology (IWBT/DVO), Stellenbosch, South Africa and Umeå Plant Science Centre.In January 2016 we received a competitive collaboration grant (555kSEK total) from VR/STINT South Africa ? Sweden Bilateral Scientific Research Cooperation Programme* .The knowledge gained by understanding the process and the links between the different components will enable intelligent choices and design of sensor devices that could monitor, predictand control the quality-impact processes/factors in such systems. Given the significant current focus on automation, robotics and intelligent systems, also in Agricultural research, the development/implementation of such sensor devices are of a high priority.
