Title [sv]
Ett livsloppsperspektiv på fysisk aktivitet, kondition, mental och kognitiv hälsa: Longitudinella samband, mekanismer och moderatorer
Title [en]
A life-span perspective on physical activity, fitness, cognitive function, and mental health: Longitudinal associations, explanatory mechanisms, and moderators
Abstract [en]
Physical activity and fitness have been linked to health-related benefits, such as less cognitive decline and reduced risk of depression. However, we still have limited understanding of the long-term associations between physical activity, fitness, cognitive function, and mental health. This project aims to gain increased understanding of the life-span associations between physical activity, fitness, cognitive function, and mental health across different phases in life. To reach this aim I will use data from new unique databases based on combinations of existing population studies and registers, use existing data from life-span studies, and collect new intensive longitudinal data over two weeks. Using state-of-the-art statistical analyses, I will go beyond the typical first generation research questions (e.g., is there an association), and examine mediators and moderators, enabling a detailed examination of the life-span associations. This project will provide novel insight into these life-span associations across different phases in life, and provide specific information to practitioners regarding when, why, and for whom certain interventions might be more or less effective. A prolonged postdoc period (2017-2019) at the University of Otago would allow me to develop an independent line of research and collaborations with leading scholars in the field that would benefit my development and enhance the international competitiveness of the research environment at Umeå University.
