Title [sv]
Ursprunget för endosymbios hos eukaryoter: ett teoretiskt ramverk för att uppskatta sannolikheten för och inverkan av mitokondrien
Title [en]
The Origin of the Eukaryotic Endosymbiosis: A theoretical framework for assessing the likelihood and impact of the mitochondrion
Abstract [en]
The endosymbiotic event that gave rise to mitochondria and eukaryotes is a pivotal event in the evolution of life on earth --- unparalleled in terms of its rarity and significance. It is thought to have occurred only once and account for the evolution of all large, complex life. Despite its importance, we do not understand the general principles that govern the probability or fitness consequences of an endosymbiotic event. The central aim of this proposal is to address this significant knowledge gap by providing a theoretical framework that can identify these principles. We propose a novel combination of biochemical differential equations, microbial population dynamics, metabolic networks, and allometric scaling that connect cell physiology with population ecology. The project is divided into two objectives that focus on key ecological and physiological factors that affect the rarity and significance of an endosymbiotic event. The proposed work will be tackled by a team of PhD students and postdocs and take place at Umeå University´s Interdisciplinary Integrated Science Lab (IceLab), which will provide a collaborative research environment. The project leader will coordinate all research, supervise students, and develop external collaborations. Ultimately, the proposed research will provide a framework that addresses fundamental questions that can not be answered by current methodology and increases our understanding of a singular event in the evolution of life on earth.
