Det snabbt ökande intresset för informationsteknologi inom både industri och akademi föranleder frågor och problem kring vårt blivande som digitala subjekt (Harraway 1988, 1985; Hekman 2010, Ihde and Selinger 2003, Markham 1998). Men trots att digitala miljöer skapar och kommunicerar kön, exempelvis genom representation, narrativ, diskurs, ideologi och praktik, så är vår förståelse för digitalt kön begränsad. Denna workshop avser därför att i mötet mellan praktiker och forskare presentera, diskutera och nyttja en rad metodologiska och teoretiska perspektiv (genusteori, sociologi, sociokulturell introspektion, virtuell etnografi) för att undersöka digitalt könsskapande. Medan workshopen avser lyfta fram fallstudier som visar på möjligheten att i och via det digitala rummet skapa mer jämställda miljöer kommer alltså dessa perspektiv också kontrasteras och jämföras med praktiska ansatser (aktivism, konst). Medan det digitala materialet (Yoo 2012) skapar unika möjligheter så kan mötet mellan forskare, aktivister och konstnärer öppna nya sätt att tänka, studera och möta teknik och därmed hur vi både ser och gör (digitalt) kön.
Abstract [en]
The increase of interest in information technology has spawned issues related to our becoming as digitalized humans (Harraway 1988, 1985; Hekman 2010, Ihde and Selinger 2003, Markham 1998). While digital environments communicate gender through digital/ized discourse, concepts of digital gender are underplayed in scholarship. For the proposed workshop contributors will discuss a variety of methodological and theoretical perspectives (gender theory, sociology, socio-cultural introspection, virtual ethnography) to examine gender in the digital realm. In this vein, the workshop will flag out case studies where digital spaces retain or abort the vestiges of traditional communities with analogue hierarchical, social linkages and class-structured relationships as to further the creation of egalitarian (digital) environments. These academic perspectives will be compared to more practical approaches that can potentially accommodate or subvert current theoretical and methodological tools. As digital materiality (Yoo 2012) affords enactments that are otherwise not possible, both theoretical and practical approaches to digital gender may indeed prove key to unravel the potential digital space holds for rethinking (digital) gender. In this way, the workshop will address theoretical questions of digital gender by creating an arena where scientists, activists and artistic practitioners engage. It also seeks to offer a more nuanced and practice-based aspect of the making of digital gender.
