Title [sv]
En kemosensorisk stressmodell för hälsosymtom i kemiska miljöer
Title [en]
A chemosensory stress model for health symptoms in chemical environments
Abstract [sv]
Health problems and reduced productivity due to poor indoor air environments are considerable, with tremendous costs for society. Persons with these problems can be referred to as having ?sick building syndrome? (SBS) and multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS). The problems remain despite decades of research on SBS, with a lack of consistent findings linking pollutants to health effects. Importantly, only some persons, but not others, develop SBS and MCS. This suggests that mediating and moderating person-factors are critical for symptom development. In this respect, certain risk factors for SBS and MCS are of particular interest. The objective of the project is to test a chemosensory psychobiological stress model, based on risk factors for SBS and MCS. The model describes how non-toxic ambient odorants and sensory irritants adversely can affect health and performance. It emphasizes the roles of so-called top-down processing (health-risk perception), female gender, and pre-disposition for stress and negative aff
