Title [sv]
Ansökan om symposium: Symposium om Bakteriell Cellbiologi och Patogenes
Title [en]
Symposium on Bacterial Cell Biology and Pathogenesis
Abstract [sv]
Bacterial infections cause much worldwide mortality; a fact worsened by the evolution of new and re-emerging pathogens, multiple antibiotic resistances, and the bioterrorism threat. Thus, molecular bacterial pathogenesis researchers seek to identify and understand essential bacterial virulence strategies in the hope that these may serve as new targets for the design and development of urgently needed anti-bacterial drugs. To swiftly achieve this, concerted interactions between scientists of diverse disciplines are vital. The Umeå Centre for Microbial Research has responded by organizing a dual symposium and workshop in Umeå during June 14th to 18th, 2009. This event will bring together selected international academics from different scientific backgrounds, unified by their outstanding tract records in bacterial cell biology and/or pathogenesis research. They will lead a forum of about 150 (inter)national delegates, where important recent developments will be discussed. This initiative will focus on propagating inter-disciplinary approaches to understand and prevent bacterial infections. To reinforce these concepts, a parallel run workshop with participation of young scientists will concentrate on how best to apply various microscopy methods to study bacterial pathogen biology. The high caliber scientific program will be attractive to researchers from different universities in Sweden and abroad.
