Title [sv]
Kartläggning och modellering av informationsflöden i levande system
Title [en]
Mapping and modeling of information flow in living systems
Abstract [sv]
Where there is life there is information. To comprehend the important role information plays in living systems, we have to better understand how information flows through biological and ecological systems. Scientists and engineers have several powerful theoretical tools for studying communication between a signaler and a receiver. These tools give us insight into systems with simple interactions, such as quorum sensing in bacteria. But most interactions in biological and ecological systems are complex, such as the interactions between bacteria and their environments on an evolutionary timescale. These interactions call for new tools to study the role of information in living systems. All of my work focuses on the interplay between information, communication, and structure in living systems. Three questions that I find particularly interesting are:1. How do incentives to lie and deceive change the flow of information through living systems?2. Faced with a barrage of data, how should we comprehend the flow of information through living systems?3. Can the information generated by natural selection over generations be quantified by the apparatus of information theory?
