Title [sv]
Träning och rehabilitering för äldre personer - Intervention och utvärdering med fokus på äldre personer med demenssjukdom
Title [en]
Exercise and Rehabilitation for Older People - Intervention and Evaluation in Clinical Settings with a Special Focus on Older People with Dementia
Abstract [sv]
The overall aim of this project is to improve the care and treatment for older people, focusing particularly on older people with dementia, by improving knowledge about the effect of exercise and rehabilitation, by optimising conditions for rehabilitation in ordinary housing, and by making it easier for clinicians to choose adequate intervention strategies and to evaluate their effects. Data will be collected through, for example, two randomised controlled trials evaluating exercise among people with dementia in independent and institutional housing, respectively. Both quantitative and qualitative analyses will be used.Studies among older people, which have usually excluded people with dementia, indicate that exercise might improve cognitive functions and seem to improve physical functions and to reduce dependency in activities of daily living (ADL). A maintained or increased independence in ADL can be important for life satisfaction and might also increase the possibility to remain living in ordinary housing and reduce costs for society. Thus, there is an urgent need for studies among older people with dementia evaluating exercise and rehabilitation. It is also important to investigate the reliability and validity of assessments commonly used in clinics and in research and to provide strategies for clinicians and researchers to adequately interpret the effects of intervention studies. Incorrect interpretations could at worst lead to the use of inappropriate treatments.
