Abstract [en]

The presentation describes and discusses an analytical approach used in the project Remoulding Engineering: Knowledge and Identity Perspectives on Project Work in Engineering Education. Two groups of students are followed while doing a project involving the use of a 3D-printer, as part of a course in an engineering program. The data consists of video-taped group work sessions, video diaries and interviews. The addressed research problem is to identify and describe phases critical to the project work process when the students' approach, work with and resolve the course assignment of producing a mechanical artefact in a group of three students. In this analysis of the production of meaning within the engineering context, the body, environment and social context are seen as important factors. This means that learning in the engineering project is conceptualized as socially and materially distributed. In the analytical work this implies a consideration of semiotic resources such as verbal utterances, gestures, bodily acts, symbolic representations, physical tools, and so on, in the studies of student learning. The analysis takes into account the kinds of actions within the project work activities, that constitute meaning among the students (and the tutors) as important actions, that means gestures, language and material structure distributed across spaces of practice. Sentences and utterances are understood as situated actions and are examined in terms of their sequential organization in a specific context. In this presentation we wish to explore the analytical usefulness of the idea of relating phases of interaction to problem-solving, as part of the engineering students' project work.
