To belong and to be heard : place and youth political engagement in Swedish ruralities  (English)
Abstract [en]

Background: Research on young people’s political engagement has

broadened beyond conventional forms of participation and now

highlights a wide range of action repertoires, including local engagement

and civil society practices. At the same time, the field remains shaped by

a metrocentric tendency, where urban experiences function as an

implicit norm. As a result, place, and rural areas in particular, often fall

into the background and are treated mainly as context rather than as an

analytical category. Against this backdrop, the aim of the thesis is to

explore the significance of place for young people’s political engagement

in rural areas.

Method and theory: The thesis builds on three sub-studies. The first

is a concept-developing literature review that examines how place is

addressed in Swedish research on young people’s political engagement

and develops concepts to deepen this understanding. The second

consists of qualitative interviews with 15 young people (aged 16–29) who

self-identified as politically engaged and who lived in, or had recently

lived in, rural areas in Sweden. The third is an ethnographic case study

of a youth culture project in a rural municipality, where discourse

analysis of project applications was combined with observations and a

focus group discussion. The thesis takes a constructivist and process-

oriented perspective and combines a multidimensional understanding of

place, Bourdieu’s conceptual framework (field, capital, habitus, and

illusio), and a discourse-theoretical perspective.

Results: The thesis presents three main findings. First, it identifies

three tendencies in how place is addressed in Swedish research on young

people's political engagement. Second, it shows that place matters for

political engagement through young people’s place belongings and

through how they locate political possibilities in different places. Third,

it demonstrates that young people’s opportunities to act are shaped by

recognition and legitimacy in local political fields, as well as by spatial

hierarchies that marginalize rural perspectives. These processes intersect

with power relations linked to age, gender, rurality, and racialization.

Conclusions: Place is central to rural young people’s efforts to be heard

and to belong. The thesis makes visible how rural young people’s

political engagement is shaped by processes of locating and belonging,

spatial power relations, and local political fields. These processes in turn

shape where they experience political engagement as meaningful, and

how political recognition is negotiated over time. The thesis challenges

metrocentric assumptions in research on young people’s political

engagement and foregrounds the significance of rural places.

Abstract [sv]

landsbygdsområden i Sverige.

fokusgruppsdiskussion. Avhandlingen utgår från ett konstruktivistiskt

och processorienterat perspektiv och kombinerar en flerdimensionell

platsförståelse, Bourdieus begreppsapparat (fält, kapital, habitus och

illusio) samt ett diskursteoretiskt perspektiv.

Resultat: Avhandlingen presenterar tre huvudsakliga resultat.

Avhandlingen synliggör hur ungas politiska engagemang i

Abstract [en]

Following recent critiques of the metrocentric nature of global youth studies, this paper explores the role of place in current research on youth political action in Sweden. Drawing on Agnew’s [2011. “Chapter 23: Space and Place.” In Handbook of Geographical Knowledge, edited by J. Agnew, and D. Livingstone. London: Sage] concept of place and using qualitative interpretive review as our method, we examined three sets of research publications on three different aspects of youth political action in Sweden. Our analysis found that place was addressed differently in each set of publications: youth political socialization and civic engagement were approached as placeless, street protests were examined as place assumed and urban justice movements were studied as place-based. The first two sets of publications contribute to reproducing a metrocentric understanding of youth political action, where urban areas are constructed as the key settings for political action among young people, while rural or peripheral areas are assumed to work in the same way or are depicted as non-political. By contrast, the publications on urban justice movements offered an alternative by exploring political action as place-based. The need to study the place-specific ways that young people do politics is discussed, with its potential to further the understanding of how young people do politics from where they are.

Abstract [en]

There are important gaps in the research on youth political action due to a lack of attention to the roles of place and the experiences of young people in rural places. To address these gaps, this article presents findings from intensive interviews with 15 young people (aged between 16 and 29 years) who identified as politically/socially engaged and lived or had recently lived in a rural place in Sweden. Analysis of their responses, based on constructivist-grounded theory, shows that place dimensions shaped three social processes of young people’s political action: engaging in politics in (rural) places, finding recognition as political actors in (rural) places and negotiating political belonging in relation to (urban) places. By linking these processes with Agnew’s three-dimensional understanding of place, the analysis provides novel insights into how various dimensions of place shape crucial social processes of youth political action.

Abstract [en]

Based on qualitative interviews with youth active in civic, political and social engagement in rural Sweden, this study explores rural young people's experiences of meaningful community engagement, the challenges they face and their connection to mobility processes. While the analysis draws on the full dataset, the paper draws heavily on the experiences of two respondents, Malin and Mohamed, whose narratives are used to illustrate and deepen the understanding of these themes. Using a Bourdieusian lens, particularly the concepts of habitus, capital, fields and illusio, the analysis shows that engagement becomes meaningful in relation to young people's sense of belonging to place, community and rural values. It also highlights how power structures, especially those related to age, gender and racialisation, shape young people's experiences of engagement. Ultimately, the article argues that engagement and mobility are not necessarily in conflict but may coexist within young people's life projects and aspirations.
