Abstract [en]

Imagine having orchestra performances of contemporary art music involving whole school classes within the elementary and secondary school music education… Scholars have argued that contemporary art music could serve as a good starting point for discussing and learning basic music theory and the fundamental basics of music. Still, reports reveal that contemporary art music often is neglected in the music education in Sweden. Furthermore, the main activity reported within the Swedish secondary school music education is ensemble playing with traditional instruments as piano, guitar and drums. However, scholars argue that due to the knowledge level demanded to handle the traditional instruments not all of the schoolchildren are able to fully take part in these ensemble lessons. Orchestra2020.com is a web application under development by a team including the author to among other things address these issues. The ambition with the application is to enable schoolchildren regardless their musical knowledge and background to participate in orchestra performances of contemporary art music by using their mobile phones as musical instruments. The application includes a performance mode with three musical instruments and a conductor mode with animated music notation, which give instructions how to perform on the instruments. Animated notation could shortly be described as moving graphics presented on a screen, similar to the performance instructions presented in videogames as Sing Star and Guitar Hero. The development process of the first pilot version of the orchestra2020.com web application has been based on both artistic and educational aims. From the educational point of view the aim is to democratize orchestra performances of contemporary art music in music education, and from the artistic point of view the aim is to develop new artistic possibilities for performances of contemporary art music including electronic sounds. This presentation will present the background, the content and the aims of the orchestra2020.com application. Finally, it will report from a pilot study including workshops and a concert, where a professional chamber ensemble performed together with approximately hundred school children using the orchestra2020 application.
